Epic & Cerner Rated Highest for Usability, with MEDITECH Making the Most Progress
KLAS report examines acute care EMR usability progress over the past two years
OREM, UT – April 29, 2015 — Epic continues their industry-leading usability performance, Cerner’s customers are making the most usability progress, and MEDITECH distinguishes themselves as having made up the most ground. The latest KLAS report on EMR usability charts product performance over the past two years. The report, entitled Physician Leadership Weighs In on Acute Care EMR Usability, compares usability performance in the acute care EMR market segment.
As part of this report, KLAS interviewed physician leadership at 110 healthcare organizations across the country. In addition to collecting data about the usability of the various modules (physician documentation, CPOE, medication reconciliation, problem lists and CDS), KLAS asked these leaders to give perspectives on three overarching aspects of EMR usability: productivity, effectiveness and user interface. The results were then compared to usability performance metrics from KLAS’ last usability report two years ago to create a holistic view of each of the product’s progress since 2013.
“It is not surprising to hear physicians say that EMRs are better at enhancing their effectiveness than their productivity,” said Jonathan Christensen, report analyst. “What is surprising is how much improvement still needs to be made in areas like physician documentation and, in light of meaningful use pressures, how much some modules lack adoption.”
For access to the report, you can download the myKLAS app or visit KLAS online. The report is available to healthcare providers and vendors. Providers receive a significant discount off the standard retail price or can receive a complimentary summary report in exchange for a survey about one of their current suppliers.

Survey Reveals Data Analytics as Major Focus but Confusion Point for Healthcare IT Leaders
PITTSBURGH,PA – April 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — In the third annual Health IT Industry Outlook Survey conducted by Stoltenberg Consulting Inc., a leading healthcare information technology (HIT) consulting firm, a majority of respondents (41 percent) pointed to data analytics and business intelligence as the biggest topic in health IT for 2015. However, most (51 percent) showed confusion toward what healthcare data to actually collect and how much. The survey was conducted at the 2015 Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual conference held recently in Chicago, Illinois.
“Organizations feel they need to jump on the big data bandwagon, yet they approach this emerging issue reactively versus proactively,” Shane Pilcher, vice president of Stoltenberg Consulting, said. “Healthcare IT leaders should instead focus on collecting smart healthcare data, monitoring what data they’re saving and concentrating on the quality, quantify and validity of data needed to answer future questions for organizations.”
Completed by project managers, CIOs, IT directors and consultants, the survey also revealed that a majority (34 percent) felt that the lack of buy-in across their healthcare organizations was the largest barrier to IT initiatives, including data analytics and achieving meaningful use.
“Ultimately data analytics is only as good as the data being analyzed. Therefore, adoption is critical among all users along the data collection pathway,” Pilcher said. “Identifying early wins in decreasing cost of care and increasing overall patient outcomes is essential to developing confidence and buy-in for an organization’s data analytics program.

Friday, May 1, 9:45 am – 10:45 am Central at JW Marriott Austin, Austin, Texas. Click here for registration.PRESENTATION TOPIC:
Healthcare organizations have historically depended upon an unreliable patient handoff and discharge process, placing patient care quality and safety at risk while increasing costly readmissions. Subramanian and Kmetz will explain how bringing all interested professionals, both within the hospital and beyond, together at the precise, care-crucial moment helps providers deliver exactly what patients need. Meritage ACO used ZynxCarebook to create a Mobile Care Navigation Network that allows the organization to hold “Virtual Caregiver Huddles” among the provider community spread across a 2,600 square mile area encompassing Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties. The vastly improved care team communication and collaboration has helped the organization decrease readmissions, lower length of stay, and avert adverse events. Simultaneously improving communications and coordination of care transitions, while infusing the entire process with evidence-based best practices, is highlighted.About Zynx Health

Zynx Health Enhances Secure Text Messaging & Usability in ZynxCarebook
Mobile app ensures HIPAA & other government standards compliance for clinicians sharing patient data & other confidential information
Los Angeles, CA – April 23, 2015 — As clinicians increasingly expand their use of text messaging to communicate within and across care settings, concerns about upholding compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other government rules are also increasing. Zynx Health™, the market leader in providing evidence- and experience-based clinical improvement and mobile care coordination solutions, is addressing these issues with the release of an enhanced secure messaging application within the ZynxCarebook™ mobile coordination platform. The enhanced messaging application can be implemented independently or as a component of ZynxCarebook.
The enhancements, which were first unveiled at last week’s Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s Annual Conference & Exhibition (HIMSS15) in Chicago, improve the ability of physicians, nurses and other clinicians to exchange patient data or other confidential information while remaining in compliance with HIPAA, the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, and other relevant industry standards.
Healthcare professionals who need to share electronic protected health information (ePHI) to coordinate care have increasingly gravitated toward text messaging over the past few years because of its familiarity and ability to provide constant connectivity. According to Pew Research, 81 percent of all Americans send and receive text messages on their mobile phones. Pew also notes that texting is currently the leading activity on mobile phones.
However, traditional text messaging applications are inherently nonsecure and noncompliant under the HIPAA security rule. This lack of security creates a significant liability for hospitals and other healthcare providers, as a single unsecured text message about a patient could result in fines as high as $50,000.
“Communicating quickly and effectively is critical to ensuring high quality care coordination and collaboration among care team members across the continuum,” said Siva Subramanian, Ph.D., senior vice president of mobile products at Zynx Health. “Texting fits very easily into clinicians’ workflows, which is why its use is rapidly growing. ZynxCarebook provides that extra level of security and protection necessary for providers to meet regulatory compliance while guaranteeing the usability that led them to choose to communicate via text in the first place.”
The mobile application, available on iOS and Android, offers new security controls such as employee personal identification number (PIN) lock and active directory auto-synchronization designed to ensure that all messages sent within the app are delivered to an approved recipient and protected in accordance with healthcare regulations. Additional usability features include secure group messaging and segregated alerts, which categorize messages as patient-related or other. These capabilities promote more effective care team communication, yielding faster messaging response times, improved care transitions and patient throughput, and reduced discharge time.
“At ValleyCare we are working to bridge the chasm of traditional communication by implementing a mobile communication platform so we can communicate in real time when necessary,” said Carlos Gracia, M.D., medical director of clinical informatics at ValleyCare Health System in Pleasanton, Calif. “If physicians are busy, they should be empowered to respond promptly and effectively. Otherwise, long-standing problems such as errors, communication issues and care delays will continue. That status quo is not acceptable and can no longer be tolerated in healthcare.”

athenahealth, Epic & Medfusion Most Effective at Helping Drive Patient Portal Adoption
KLAS report examines increasingly important patient portal segment
Orem, UT – April 23, 2015 — athenahealth, Epic and Medfusion are the most effective vendors at helping their customers drive patient portal adoption, with all three vendors having over half of their customers report that at least 20% of patients have accessed the portal-a number well beyond the meaningful use bar of 5%. These findings and more are included in the recent KLAS report entitled “Patient Portals 2015: Adoption beyond Meaningful Use.”
As part of this report, KLAS interviewed 186 healthcare provider organizations to determine which vendors have proven to best meet current needs while also developing solutions for a more strategic tomorrow. The report analyzes three flavors of portals: enterprise, ambulatory and EMR agnostic. The focus of the report is to examine product performance, vendor guidance and other factors that impact providers’ ability to achieve success with patient portal adoption.
“Value-based care is forcing patient portals to evolve from being merely tools for reactive regulatory compliance to becoming valuable instruments that allow patients to proactively engage in their own care,” said report author Coray Tate. “Providers report that vendor guidance and functionality that patients find useful, such as billing and self-scheduling, are the most effective ways to encourage portal adoption among patients.”

Wolters Kluwer, Huntsville Hospital Pilot Study on Reduction of Sepsis Mortality & Morbidity
April 9, 2015 — Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced today that the preliminary findings of its joint study with Huntsville Hospital in Alabama to reduce the morbidity and mortality of sepsis will be presented during HIMSS15 in Chicago. The presentation, “A Multidisciplinary Approach to Combating Sepsis,” will take place on April 14 from 4-5 p.m. in room W192. Stephen Claypool, MD, of Wolters Kluwer (Booth #8103) and Joycelyn Craighead of Huntsville Hospital will discuss how using POC Advisor™ reduced sepsis-related mortality by 53 percent and 30-day readmissions by 30 percent.
Sepsis is the most common cause of death in hospital critical care units, annually claiming an estimated 8 million lives worldwide, including 258,000 in the U.S. Hospitals spend an estimated $20 billion annually fighting sepsis, making it the country’s single most expensive condition to treat. As a result, hospitals nationwide are following the example set by Huntsville Hospital and making reduction of sepsis severity and mortality a top priority.
“Lessening sepsis severity and lowering mortality rates is a significant aspect of Huntsville’s long-term quality improvement strategy, so the decision to partner with Wolters Kluwer on this potentially life-saving pilot study was easy,” said Craighead, Director of Quality, Huntsville Hospital. “Importantly, our clinical staff embraced the opportunity to have a hand in developing a highly effective approach to combating sepsis, largely because they were already familiar with and trusted the medical evidence and decision support tools that would drive the program.”
“Clinician engagement was imperative to the success of this pilot study,” added Claypool, Vice President of Clinical Development and Informatics, Wolters Kluwer, Clinical Solutions, noting that early diagnosis and treatment are elusive because sepsis initially presents subtly and shares common symptoms with multiple illnesses. “Physicians and nurses alike needed to be able to fully trust that alerts were triggered only when a patient was septic. That is why it was vital for us to spend time creating hundreds of disease-specific rules, which ensured that the alerts triggered were highly sensitive and specific, as well as patient-specific and evidence-based.”
Central to the pilot study was POC Advisor, a unique cloud-based point of care platform that addresses complex clinical challenges like sepsis by leveraging the electronic health record (EHR) investment a healthcare organization has already made. Built on the proven Sentri7® surveillance infrastructure, POC Advisor uses the patient data within the EHR to help detect escalating conditions early and pushes to clinicians patient-specific, evidence-based alerts with very high sensitivity/specificity via mobile and other computing devices—all with the goal of improving clinical outcomes and lowering costs.
This is accomplished by integrating key functionality from several Wolters Kluwer clinical decision support (CDS) and other leading products including UpToDate®; Lexicomp®; Medi-Span®; ProVation® clinical content, powered by Lippincott Nursing Solutions and UpToDate; Language Engine®; and Wolters Kluwer Surveillance Engine. The addition of change management to build and refine clinical protocols, provide education on the latest evidence and treatments, and enable governance to ensure process changes remain sustainable completes the solution.
“The Huntsville Hospital study epitomizes our commitment to reducing sepsis morbidity and mortality and improving patient care worldwide,” said Arvind Subramanian, President and CEO, Clinical Solutions, Wolters Kluwer. “POC Advisor has demonstrated that comprehensive CDS technology has the power to drastically improve patient outcomes and clinician performance. Wolters Kluwer is proud of its continued success in CDS innovations that support clinicians with evidence-based knowledge and revolutionize patient care.”
Learn more about POC Advisor and Wolters Kluwer at booth #8103 during HIMSS15 in Chicago April 12-16 at the McCormick Place Convention Center.

Focused interdisciplinary plans of care address holistic needs of cancer patients specific to pain management plus issues derived from varied treatments
Los Angeles, CA – April 15, 2015 — While there is ample clinical evidence detailing the different forms of therapies used against cancer, relatively little attention is given to helping patients cope with the disease’s devastating ancillary effects – and the treatments for it. Zynx Health™, the market leader in providing evidence- and experience-based clinical improvement and mobile care coordination solutions, announced today it is filling that void with the release of a new cancer content module rounding out its Best in KLAS–rated ZynxCare® solution. The module offers the interdisciplinary care team a holistic approach to the treatment of cancer patients across care settings.
“Cancer care content is consistently a top request from our clients,” said Nan Hou, PhD, RN, deputy clinical editor at Zynx Health. “We created this module to ensure that healthcare organizations have access to the highest quality clinical evidence and plan of care so they can customize and individualize the content to meet the needs of this growing population.”
This module addresses the interdisciplinary management of common conditions associated with cancer and cancer treatment, such as esophageal irritation, a lack of energy, and general body pain. The content covers treatment of physiological symptoms as well as related side effectsThe content also goes beyond the physical to focus on psychological, psychosocial, and spiritual issues deemed critically important to ensuring patients become and remain engaged in their own treatment. The goal is to expand the focus from simply treating the disease to helping the whole person in order to improve care across a patient’s entire journey.
Previews of the new cancer care content have garnered praise from hospitals. McLaren Port Huron Hospital in Port Huron, Mich., a recipient of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer’s Outstanding Achievement Award, is eager to integrate the content into its new cancer center as part of its outpatient survivorship program. “This is a highly comprehensive plan of care specifically tailored to survivors and current patients with cancer,” said John Schweihofer, RN, nurse manager of McLaren Port Huron’s oncology unit.
Bill Arnold, RN, nursing informatics manager from Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, N.Y., agrees that the usefulness of Zynx Health’s new cancer care content will be significant. “With our increase in patients receiving chemotherapy, this content will be of great help in developing our plan of care,” he said.
Carolyn Richardson, MSN, MBA, RN-BC, regional nursing officer at Zynx Health adds, “The treatment of cancer poses overwhelming challenges to the U.S. health system, among them rising costs and short- and long-term physical and mental health issues. We’re excited to introduce this cancer content module which we strongly believe will greatly improve the healthcare experience and hopefully the ultimate goal of better outcomes.”

Lexmark Healthcare encompasses the leading healthcare software brands Lexmark has acquired, including Perceptive Software, Acuo, PACSGEAR, GNAX and Claron Technology.

Supporting Quotes
“Lexmark Healthcare represents the breadth of our offerings to the healthcare industry as we help provider organizations connect information silos to become more interoperable and achieve peak performance,” said Todd Hamblin, chief marketing officer, Lexmark. “We know that health systems are challenged with exponentially growing volumes of clinical and business content. Departments and information are disconnected from each other and patient content is scattered across and beyond the enterprise, making it difficult for healthcare professionals to make informed decisions, both clinical and business. Lexmark Healthcare uniquely brings this disparate information together within the EHR and other core applications.”
