Hospira and Iatric Systems Partner to Deliver Smart Pump-EMR Interoperability to Hospitals
BOXFORD, MA – December 19, 2016 — Iatric Systems, Inc., a healthcare technology company dedicated to helping healthcare organizations enhance their IT investments, and Hospira, a Pfizer Company and leading provider of infusion technologies, today announced a formal partnership to develop interoperability between Hospira’s smart infusion devices and Iatric Systems Accelero Connect® integration software solution. Hospira and Iatric Systems have signed a development agreement and are currently piloting smart pump-EMR interoperability (a/k/a IV-EMR interoperability) at an undisclosed US hospital.
The smart pump-EMR interoperability between Hospira and Iatric Systems provides two-way communication that enables automation of pump programming with the validated EMR medication order, as well as documentation of medication administration data back into the patient’s electronic medical record.
“Hospira is proud to partner with Iatric Systems to make IV-EMR interoperability available to the hundreds of hospitals where Iatric Systems performs integration,” said Julie SawyerMontgomery, president, Hospira Infusion Systems. “After already becoming the first smart pump vendor to successfully integrate with three major EMR platforms, we are excited to add another major EMR system to the list once this pilot site goes live.”
Iatric Systems Accelero Connect solution is vendor-neutral, enabling interoperability between medical device manufacturers’ equipment and hospital EMRs. Using Accelero Connect, hospitals have successfully integrated critical care and low-acuity vital sign monitors, ventilators, and other medical devices — now including smart pumps — with their hospital EMRs. Iatric Systems has dedicated more than 25 years to helping hospitals maximize their EMR investment.
“Smart pump-EMR integration can help save lives and money. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do,” said Frank Fortner, President, Iatric Systems. “On the clinical side, we’re sending IV medication orders from the EMR to the infusion pump, which significantly minimizes the chance of human errors and helps improve patient outcomes. On the financial side, we’re sending start times, stop times, and other infusion details from the pump back to the EMR, which saves nurses time and may improve hospital reimbursements. This is a win-win for everyone, and we’re proud to partner with Hospira in this advancement of patient care.”
Hospira MedNet™ safety software enables hospitals to create a drug library which can automatically link to Hospira infusion devices, enforcing hard/soft upper and lower limits by drug type and empowering clinical leaders with visibility into infusion practices through Hospira MedNet Performance Reports. The system is designed to strengthen hospitals’ efforts to improve patient safety, avoid preventable costs, and strengthen formulary compliance.

Inside CHIME: Celebrating CHIME’s Rockin’ 2016
12.15.16 by Marc Probst, CHCIO
CHIME Board of Trustees, Chair; VP & CIO, Intermountain HealthcareThe year started with CHIME taking on one of the most daunting challenges facing the industry and ended with a grand celebration of the organization’s tremendous growth.
Last January, just two weeks into my term as chairman of the CHIME board of trustees, I flew to Washington, D.C., to officially launch one of the biggest – and most important – initiatives in CHIME’s 25-year history: The National Patient ID Challenge. Standing at the podium in a crowded room at the National Press Club, I explained the immense patient safety and organizational challenges we face because there’s no national system for ensuring accurate patient identification. As an industry, I said, we needed to step forward and fix this problem once and for all.
Acting Assistant Secretary of Health Karen DeSalvo, M.D., who, at the time, was also the national coordinator for health information technology; and National Patient Safety Foundation CEO Tejal Gandhi, M.D., joined me on the dais to express their support of CHIME’s historic initiative. Several CHIME board members were also in attendance.
I’ve been honored to serve as CHIME board chair this year and work with an incredible group of member volunteers and the CHIME staff. Being front-and-center on such issues as patient identification and creating a more flexible Meaningful Use program have helped grow CHIME’s presence and influence on a national level. I testified on behalf of CHIME at House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health hearing on cybersecurity. CHIME leaders were also invited to participate in a White House briefing on a new toolkit for assessing organizational cybersecurity readiness. And, importantly, two CHIME board members were selected to serve on the Health and Human Services Department Cybersecurity Task Force.
There’s more. CHIME President and CEO Russell Branzell was invited to participate in a White House event launching the Precision Medicine Initiative. It was an opportunity to highlight CHIME’s work enhancing patient engagement by increasing adoption of OpenNotes. Individual CHIME members also attended the PMI event to showcase how their institutions are advancing personalized care.
CHIME’s tireless advocacy efforts paid off in other areas, including securing a 90-day reporting period for Meaningful Use. You can read more about those wins here.
CHIME’s professional develop and education offerings continued to flourish as well. We launched KnowledgeHub to give members a one-stop-shop to find case studies and other resources to track down best practices. The Education Foundation awarded a record number of scholarships – 69, totaling nearly $200,000 – giving members opportunities to expand their skill sets. And we welcomed the inaugural class of international CHCIO designees.
In collaboration with the CHIME Foundation, we continued to work to jettison the old vendor-customer mindset and build true partnerships that will allow all of us to work toward the common goal of transforming care. The first CHIME Partner Education Summit was a huge success. Nearly 150 Foundation firm representatives and a dozen CIO faculty members met in Chicago for a two-day symposium where we shared ideas for creating a more robust healthcare system.
Last, but certainly not least, we kicked off a year-long celebration of CHIME’s 25 anniversary at the CHIME16 Fall CIO Forum. It was wonderful to see so many founding and lifetime members in Phoenix for the celebration. Keynote speakers challenged us to get out of our comfort zones and find new ways of inspiring staff and leading change. And how will we top Foreigner?
Thank you all for the contributions you make to CHIME. Together, you have all made this the most outstanding professional organization on the planet (well, my opinion). I hope you will all take some much-earned time during the next couple of weeks to be with your families and recharge for 2017. As I hand the gavel over to Liz Johnson, I know that CHIME is in exceptional hands for the new year.
Happy holidays!

Inside CHIME: CHIME Eyes Programs to Improve Leadership Diversity
12.15.16 by Matthew Weinstock
Director of Communications and Public Relations, CHIMEThrough mentorship and focused professional development, CHIME leaders hope to inspire the next generation of health IT leaders and create a more diverse workforce.
Similar to many industries, healthcare faces a diversity gap in the executive ranks. Minorities made up just 14 percent of hospital board members, 11 percent of executive leadership positions and 19 percent of first- and mid-level managers, according to respondents to a 2015 survey from the Institute for Diversity in Health Care and the Health Research and Educational Trust. The study did not track women in leadership positions. CHIME’s membership numbers parallel industry trends. Roughly 700 members identified race or ethnicity on their membership profile, with 136 denoting a minority classification. Additionally, 489 of CHIME’s 2,000-plus members are female.
Creating a diverse leadership team is essential if organizations aim to move beyond the status quo and explore new and innovative ways to solving problems. This is true for any industry, but especially healthcare. As provider organizations develop population health programs and try to address equity of care, C-suite diversity helps to nurture new strategic priorities.
In 2017, CHIME will be leading the charge to increase leadership opportunities for women and minorities in health IT. The initiatives will be led by board members Liz Johnson, Cletis Earle and Myra Davis. Broadly, the initiatives will focus on providing focused mentoring and professional development.
“We must continue to remind ourselves that the patient is the ultimate customer. IT strategy and decision-making must involve having an understanding of the diverse population that’s being served,” says Liz Johnson, 2017 CHIME board chair and chief information officer, acute care hospitals and applied clinical informatics, Tenet Healthcare. “There’s no better way to do that than to increase diversity not only at the IT leadership level, but all throughout IT and from within the staffing ranks. This clearly will create an environment that promotes unique perspectives, creative approaches and opportunities to better meet the needs of our customers and organization.”
Leaders of CHIME’s Diversity Leadership Program At the same, says Earle, vice president and CIO, Kaleida Health, the board recognized that “the world is changing and the role and influence of the CIO must change as well; talent comes in all forms.” The worry, he adds, is that organizations that fail to adapt to new business paradigms will end up being left behind. “You never want one thought process of people who think the same; we are not robots. Having active diversity programs provides valuable input in influencing strategic and decision-making processes. In IT, we must challenge the status quo. If we have everyone thinking the same, we may fall into an environment of complacency.”
Johnson, Earle and Davis agree that it is incumbent on current CIOs to mentor and encourage future leaders, and that means going beyond the four walls of the hospital. Reaching out to universities, community colleges, social service agencies and even elementary and high schools can go a long way towards inspiring the next generation of health IT leaders and creating a diverse workforce.
“It’s critical that we engage in local communities and programs such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), says Davis, senior vice president of information services and CIO, Texas Children’s Hospital. “As a woman CIO and a woman of color, it’s critical that we recognize the blessing we are given and, equally, how important it is to also recognize that we must help others, in whatever way we can, to achieve their goals. I believe this is true no matter what your background is. I have been blessed to have great mentors in my career, whether personally or professionally. With the exception of my mother, all have been male. The really good mentors never allowed me to make an excuse for myself; I was always challenged to think differently and never accept ‘No’ for the answer and always look ahead and anticipate what’s next.”
And for those future leaders, Johnson suggests that they not sit back and wait for change, rather, they can help initiate change. “Let your passion for all you know lead you to thinking out of the box and finding solutions for really difficult problems,” she says.
There’s a strong commitment from the board to advance this movement; look for more details on the diversity/mentorship initiatives as they unfold in the coming months.

21st Century Cures Act Could Spur Interoperability
ANN ARBOR, MI, December 13, 2016 – Statement by CHIME President and CEO Russell Branzell on enactment of the 21st Century Cures Act:
The 21st Century Cures Act will help pave the way to greater interoperability and improve electronic health information exchange. The law reflects the growing need to develop a standards-based information exchange infrastructure. CHIME has been at the forefront of advocating for greater attention to standards development and for improving interoperability.
Significantly, the law also contains several CHIME-supported provisions that address the critical issues of accurately identifying patients and matching them to their health records. The absence of national solutions for patient identification and patient matching not only pose serious risks to patient safety, but also lead resources being wasted on cleaning up duplicative medical records, as well as creating other inefficiencies. Through our National Patient ID Challenge, CHIME has been leading the charge for finding a solution that will ensure accurate patient identification. While that $1 million-challenge continues, and we hope to identify a winner in 2017, we welcome the opportunities laid out in the 21st Century Cures Act that could allow us to collaborate with our federal partners on this important patient safety issue.
CHIME also supported language in the law that will create a more transparent process for certifying electronic health record systems; a process that will include real-world testing for interoperability. This will add a layer of confidence that health IT systems are capable of supporting the transition to a more integrated and value-based delivery system.

Santa Rosa Consulting Selected by AtlantiCare Health System to Strengthen Business Intelligence & Analytics Program
AtlantiCare’s pursuit of innovative strategic directions is increasing enterprise demands on its BIA program. Major imperatives centering on population health management, value-based payments, operating effectiveness, quality & safety improvement, & more, required a stronger, more robust BIA program to be successful.
FRANKLIN, TN – December 13, 2016 (PRWEB) — Santa Rosa Consulting, Inc. was selected by AtlantiCare, a NJ-based member of Geisinger Heath System, to strengthen the benefits and strategic value of the health system’s enterprise business intelligence and analytics (BIA) program. AtlantiCare’s pursuit of innovative strategic directions is increasing enterprise demands on its BIA program. Major imperatives centering on population health management, value-based payments, operating effectiveness, quality and safety improvement, and more, required a stronger, more robust BIA program to be successful.
“We need to develop this capability as a core competency and strategic differentiator for AtlantiCare to move our organization from ad hoc or opportunistic users of traditional analytics to strategic and transformative consumers of data-driven intelligence,” explains Christopher A. Scanzera, VP & Chief Information Officer at AtlantiCare. “Our organization looks to BIA to be both a supporter and driver of business and clinical decision-making.”
Santa Rosa’s proven approach to strengthening a healthcare provider’s BIA program starts with a comprehensive assessment of all critical aspects of a rock-solid foundation for lasting success, not only technology. These findings and insights cut through the noisy symptoms of inadequate BIA program performance to directly address the underlying root causes, thereby improving the program for the near and long term. A copy of Santa Rosa’s whitepaper with case study describing AtlantiCare’s situation and Santa Rosa’s approach is available here.
“The reasons so many healthcare providers’ BIA programs fail to deliver required benefits are generally more about processes and roles than technology. Improving the positive impacts of a BIA program must start with building a stronger underlying foundation for success,” states Bill Leander, Santa Rosa’s Chief Strategy Officer. “Without a focus on root causes, organizations tend to play ‘whack-a-mole’ with the persistent symptoms of an inadequate BIA program foundation, such as persistent user frustration, preponderance of Do-It-Yourself tools, lack of single sources of truth, and recurring calls to ‘upgrade’ technology. Santa Rosa’s approach delves beneath these symptoms to create the sustainable improvements needed to support the organization’s strategic priorities.”

Year in Review: Orion Health’s Top 6 Blog Posts of 2016
Global population health IT solution leader shares the year’s most popular blog posts
SCOTTSDALE, AZ – December 12, 2016 — Recognized as one of the top 50 blogs in health IT for its provocative content, the Orion Health™ blog featured over 80 original posts in 2016. In brief, here are the organization’s picks for its top six entries of the year.
Your Medical Record is Destined for Amazon, Microsoft, and/or Google
The cloud may be healthcare’s only answer to the increasing demand for storage space. Medical records are ballooning to an astronomical size, with each containing as much as six terabytes of data. In total, that’s a gargantuan amount of information that no provider’s IT system will be able to handle on its own. The race to the cloud has begun, and no provider can afford to be left behind.A Different Kind of Patient Record: Why Precision Medicine Will Work in a Way Population Health Can’t
Taking population health to the next level by narrowing the scope even further, precision medicine is destined to revolutionize the way providers treat their patients. As payers recognize the value of micro-stratified population health, the push for precision medicine is coming in the form of results – both in terms of financial savings and improved patient care.I Want You to Incite a Revolution: 4 Powerful Actions That Will Change Healthcare Forever
Personalized medicine is about analyzing all available information on an individual, identifying their risk factors and treating them when they’re ill. Personalized wellness is a form of proactive care that aims to maintain a specific patient’s well-being by reducing their chance of ever becoming sick in the first place. Revolutionizing healthcare starts with proactively reducing the need for treatment by leveraging smart technology to transform patients into healthy people. But we can’t wait for laws and societal pressure to take us there. It’s up to us to make personalized wellness a reality. One Year, 60 Patients, and 1,000 ED Visits: How Smart County Policy, the Right Triage Service, and Technology Ended a Vicious Cycle
What could have possibly forced 60 patients to visit the ED 1,000 times in a single year? Turns out the patients (playfully dubbed “frequent flyers”) were Medicare and Medicaid enrollees who just needed a meal, didn’t have the co-pay for their medications, didn’t have family and/or didn’t have transportation. In other words, they’re people with social needs and no way to accommodate them. With a combination of tech and policy, an emergency room can end the cycle of frequent-flyer visits for good.Transparency: Shouldn’t Healthcare Consumers Enjoy It the Way Amazon.com Customers Do?
There’s no nice way to spin it: the incentive model for care compensation is busted. The consumerization of healthcare opens the door for patients to know exactly what they’re paying for and what results to expect. However, providers looking to maximize profits lack an incentive to save patients time and money. Moving forward, competition is driving a paradigm shift. Providers looking to keep their clients and good reputations need to evolve with the times. By leveraging the right technology and committing to being transparent about the real cost of care, healthcare can join the retail space by bringing value to its consumers and placing a premium on loyalty over short-term gains. Are You Running a Fool’s Errand? Never Invest in Monolithic Legacy Solutions
Providers have sunk millions of dollars into software to run their organizations and manage their patients, yet their legacy systems are no longer cutting it in today’s consumer-focused environment. Now what? Well, they update of course … at least, until that becomes an endless series of costly patchwork fixes. The sooner you tackle the technology problem head on, the sooner the endless cycle of managing upgrades for monolithic legacy solutions will be over, and the faster you’ll be on the road to implementing technologies that bring true value and ROI to your organization.Orion Health blog posts are curated on the company’s knowledge hub, launched in early 2016 to share Orion Health’s thinking and vision in the form of insightful white papers, case studies, reports, webinars and blog posts. With a focus on enabling healthcare organizations to change for the better, topics include precision medicine, population health, value-based care, real-time analytics, artificial intelligence, EMRs, open APIs, care coordination, public health, and other important industry trends and issues. The overarching theme is simple: in healthcare, anything is possible with vision and the right technology.

Additionally, Health Catalyst CEO Dan Burton earned the highest job approval rating among leaders of digital health companies nationally, based on anonymous employee surveys on Glassdoor.com. His 99 percent approval rating prompted Rock Health this week to name Burton the winner of its annual “Most Beloved CEO” award for 2017.
Glassdoor ranked Health Catalyst the 11th best place to work in the small- and medium-sized business (SMB) category, which includes US companies with fewer than 1,000 employees. Health Catalyst was the only company among the list’s top 25 companies to have been listed in the top 25 last year, when it ranked 7th.
The Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards program, now in its ninth year, relies solely on the input of employees, who elect to provide feedback on their jobs, work environments and companies via Glassdoor. Before naming the winners, Glassdoor reviewed over 1.6 million individual surveys on more than 445,000 businesses.
Regional Awards Confirm Top Workplace Status
Two of Utah’s most prestigious publications also recently recognized Health Catalyst as a highly desireable employer able to attract the most talented professionals in the state. Utah Business, the state’s preeminent business magazine, named Health Catalyst one of 50 Best Places to Work in Utah, for the third year in a row. Winners were selected based on a review of the company’s benefits and compensation, growth opportunities, company culture and management, as well as surveys of employees. The winners will be celebrated today at a dinner at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.Additionally, The Salt Lake Tribune in late November named Health Catalyst the No. 3 “Top Workplace” among medium-sized companies in the Salt Lake City region—the third year in a row that the company has ranked in the top three among regional employers. “We at Health Catalyst recognize the direct relationship between fulfilling our mission to enable massive improvement in healthcare outcomes, and our ability to attract and retain the best and brightest team members in our areas of expertise,” said Burton. “To accomplish this, we must create and then maintain the best place to work for our team members. The Glassdoor Best Places to Work are determined using company reviews shared by US-based employees between November 2, 2015 and November 1, 2016. To be considered for the SMB category, a company must have less than 1,000 employees and have received at least 25 company reviews from US-based employees during the window of eligibility. The final list is compiled based on Glassdoor’s proprietary algorithm, and takes into account quantity, quality and consistency of reviews.

MEDITECH’s 6.1 Revenue Cycle Drives Efficiency at Anderson Regional
MERIDIAN, MS – December 8, 2016 — Anderson Regional Medical Center was one of several organizations to share their financial success story during MEDITECH’s recent Revenue Cycle Summit. The event highlighted strategies our customers can take to maintain profitability while navigating industry regulations and new reimbursement models.
“In this day and age of electronic health records, it is important that we work very closely with our EHR vendor,” said Anderson’s Revenue Cycle Director Kevin Adams. “MEDITECH has been an exceptional business partner and the Revenue Cycle Summit was a great extension of that relationship.”
With a renewed focus on revenue cycle and the implementation of MEDITECH’s 6.1 platform in April 2015, Anderson Regional has cut their A/R days from 95 down to 47, while also reducing lost revenue by 90 percent. All the while, the 300-bed hospital has remained in the top 2 percent nationally for patient safety and experience, according to Healthgrades.
Adams detailed three of the biggest benefits he’s seen from their EHR–improved efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
“The transparency of the data within the Financial Status Desktop has driven numerous efficiencies in our processes. We are now able to identify and react more quickly to trends–such as insurance denials–that can have a negative impact on our A/R days,” he said.
“With parameters built into the EHR, we are encouraging physicians to document medical necessity requirements, while at the same time providing them the Information Systems team support that is needed if they have concerns. This is yet another example of how we have been successful in our reduction of denials.”
Using the EHR’s leadership reports, executives at Anderson are accurately monitoring their staff’s progress on productivity goals. “We’re able to see the daily tasks associated to each biller and collector, so we can hold them accountable,” Adams said.
“Having the right tools, for the right people, at the right time means we can clearly set our performance standards for each team. MEDITECH’s Revenue Cycle solution has made a huge difference for us in that regard.”
Anderson has also seen significant improvements to their credit accounts. “Two years ago, we had over $7 million in credit balances, representing over 7,000 accounts. Today, our credit balances are down to just $578,000 across 725 accounts,” stated Adams. “MEDITECH has also helped our facility to consolidate bad debt, and allow for automated monthly account reconciliation between our facility and our two vendors.”
Those attending HIMSS17 can learn more about Anderson Regional’s strategies for driving efficiency throughout the revenue cycle at the HIMSS Revenue Cycle Solutions Summit, next February in Orlando, FL.
