CynergisTek Releases Redspin Annual Report on the State of Cybersecurity in Healthcare
Report Shows Hacking Attacks on Healthcare Providers Increased 320% in 2016; Identifies Ransomware as Prominent Threat to Hospitals
AUSTIN, TX – February 15, 2017— CynergisTek™, an Auxilio company (NYSE MKT: AUXO), and industry leader in health information privacy, compliance and cybersecurity, today announced the release of Redspin’s annual cybersecurity report titled, Breach Report 2016: Protected Health Information (PHI). The seventh annual report provides in-depth analysis of the causes of PHI breaches reported to the Department of Health and Human Services and the overall state of cybersecurity in healthcare.
On January 31, 2017, Auxilio acquired CynergisTek. Under the terms of the deal, CynergisTek will continue to operate as an independent entity and Redspin, acquired by Auxilio in 2015, became part of the CynergisTek portfolio.
The report revealed a 320 percent increase in the number of healthcare providers victimized by hackers in 2016, and that 81 percent of records breached in 2016 resulted from hacking attacks specifically. Additionally, 2016 marked the first time a U.S. hospital had been the victim of ransomware, defined as a type of malware that encrypts data and holds it hostage until a ransom demand is met. While several large healthcare organizations were targeted by hackers in 2016, the majority of attacks occurred at smaller clinics.
“Healthcare providers have become the primary targets of malicious hackers, and their attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and disruptive to operations,” said Dan Berger, Vice President at CynergisTek. “The dramatic increase in hacking attacks in 2016, coupled with the large number of patient records compromised in those incidents, points to a pressing need for providers to take a much more proactive and comprehensive approach to protecting their information assets in 2017 and beyond.”
Additional findings of the 2016 Breach Report include:- 325 large breaches of PHI, compromising 16,612,985 individual patient records
- 3,620,000 breached patient records in the year’s single largest incident
- 40 percent of large breach incidents involved unauthorized access/disclosure
“By absorbing Redspin, we created a group of cybersecurity subject matter experts unmatched in the industry,” said Mac McMillan, CEO of CynergisTek. “The findings of this report demonstrate that specialized knowledge is required to combat the growing threat that cyberattacks present to healthcare, and by leveraging our new resources we can deliver that level of expertise on a much larger scale.”
The report also includes a summary of HIPAA enforcement activities announced in 2016 and concludes with recommendations for strengthening privacy and security controls at healthcare organizations. The full report can be downloaded at cynergistek.com/2016-breach-report.
To learn more, stop by booths #2093 and #1734 at the HIMSS Annual Conference from February 20–23 in Orlando where Dan Berger will be presenting the report findings. To schedule a meeting with a CynergisTek executive at the conference, please contact Chanel Benoit at [email protected].

Immersive Partners with SecurityScorecard to Help Healthcare Organizations Manage Third-Party Risk
Immersive helps customers make meaningful & sustainable business associate cybersecurity risk management possible with cutting-edge ratings platform
PANAMA CITY, FL – February 14, 2017 — Advancing its work in data protection, HIPAA compliance and enforcement readiness solutions, Immersive announced today a partnership with SecurityScorecard, the leader in security ratings and continuous risk monitoring, to enhance its portfolio of comprehensive business associate (BA) risk management solutions.
SecurityScorecard’s comprehensive security rating platform is the most accurate benchmark of cybersecurity risk across the global business ecosystem. The platform offers a breadth and depth of critical data points, across 10 factors of security performance, including hacker chatter, leaked information and social engineering, in an automated, user-friendly platform. Data is continuously collected and analyzed to provide Covered Entities (CEs) with a security assessment for any BA or vendor of interest that should be evaluated once, or continuously monitored. The platform also provides expert remediation advice and real-time alerts with any new vulnerabilities discovered.
“Healthcare’s prevailing risk management approaches have not enabled visibility nor fostered collaboration between CEs and their BAs,” stated Dan Rounds, President at Immersive. “Too many organizations rely upon resource-intensive, inconsistently-executed manual processes to assess and manage CE-BA risk that are not effective nor sustainable. The intelligence introduced via SecurityScorecard reveals critical information about a BA’s information security performance that manual processes alone could never surface. The platform automates visibility to this intelligence on a continuous basis which allows us to deliver new insights to our clients 24x7x365, and to scale our clients’ BA risk management programs to maturity more quickly and cost-effectively.”
The partnership with SecurityScorecard adds another dimension to Immersive’s data-driven BA management solutions portfolio to address opportunities for risk-reduction head-on. From providing clients with instant visibility to a prospective BA’s scorecard during a selection process, to managed service offerings that provide continuous monitoring of cybersecurity risk, Immersive’s BA risk management portfolio includes on-demand, program development and managed services to address the continuum of client needs and requirements.
“We’re excited to partner with Immersive to bring security ratings and continuous risk monitoring to healthcare organizations,” said Michael Rogers, Vice President of Strategic Alliances and Channels at SecurityScorecard. “Instant visibility into the security posture of third-parties is critical to this sector, and what’s absolutely essential are the expert recommendations on the immediate actions needed to remediate vulnerabilities.”

Orion Health Hits New Milestone: More Than 600 Rhapsody Customers Worldwide
Interoperability technology enables quick, effective integration for 300-plus healthcare organizations in the US
SCOTTSDALE, AZ – February 14, 2017 — Orion Health™, a global technology company that provides solutions that enable healthcare to over 110 million patients in more than 25 countries, has announced another milestone: Its Rhapsody® Integration Engine, is now in use at more than 640 healthcare organizations in 36 countries worldwide. More than half of them—324—are US based providers, payers, pharmaceutical manufacturers or application developers. In addition, 500 OEM partners have deployed close to 10,000 instances of Rhapsody.
Rhapsody is Orion Health’s foundation product—the healthcare enabler that brings disparate systems together through seamless data integration. The solution now processes more than a billion messages per day across the globe. This positions Orion Health as one of the global leaders and single-source solution providers of a healthcare integration product that is future-proofed to handle the needs of today—and tomorrow.
Rhapsody gives Stormont Vail Health in Topeka, Kansas, the ability to expand functionalities and components without incurring additional capital expenses. “My team was much more comfortable with Rhapsody’s Integrated Development Environment (IDE) than anything else they had seen and they were very confident that they would be able to migrate all of the interfaces to Rhapsody without the need to hire any additional IT staff,” said Judy Corzine, administrative director and CIO of Stormont Vail Health.
Orion Health has proven its ability to not only retain existing clients, but attract new customers to its end-to-end, scalable solutions. “In 2016 alone, we announced significant Rhapsody contracts in the UK, France, Australia, United States and Canada, with large EMR and population health companies as well as small companies and start-up software vendors—evidence of the broad-ranging market need for a flexible and scalable modern healthcare integration platform,” said Harish Panchal, global vice president, Orion Health.
In the US alone, leading hospitals and health systems have selected Rhapsody for data integration, including Allegheny Health Network, Regional Health, Penn State Health, Palmetto Health, and Greenville Health System.
Product Upgrades
Orion Health is soon to go to market with two product updates with version 6.2.3 available in the first half of 2017. Updated features will include:- Intelligent Mapper — EMR upgrades/migration, new applications requiring complex integration, and other industry changes are pushing the limits of outdated engines. Many organizations feel daunted by the effort to migrate or rebuild existing interfaces. Rhapsody’s Intelligent Mapper reduces by up to half the time and cost of migration. It accelerates the mapping process by performing much of the heavy lifting, including analysis of the legacy engine, reverse engineering of rules, documentation and code generation.
Rhapsody 7 introduces a new pluggable database architecture which will provide a platform for horizontal scalability and higher availability with an active/active capability delivering no single points of failure. New features will include:
- High Availability: Active/Active — Healthcare engines are usually deployed in an active/passive manner, as it is easier to manage message sequence and guaranteed delivery of messages. With active/active, customers can meet requirements around guaranteed message delivery using a resilient architecture that offers continuous service.
Rhapsody is the integration engine that powers Amadeus’ high-volume data-acquisition capabilities. Amadeus is Orion Health’s award-winning platform for population health management and precision medicine.

Machine Learning in Healthcare: Now for Everyone
catalyst.ai by Health Catalyst democratizes machine learning, enables transformative outcomes improvement through predictive analytics for healthcare organizations of all sizes
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – February 14, 2017 — Machine learning is a part of everyday life for most Americans, from navigation apps to Amazon’s omniscient purchase recommendations. But in healthcare the use of machine learning has so far been limited to niche science projects in large and academic health systems – those able to afford the highly skilled data scientists and dedicated teams required to turn their data into meaningful performance improvements.
Health Catalyst is on a mission to change that by embedding the value of machine learning throughout healthcare. Last month, the company launched healthcare.ai™ to help make machine learning routine, pervasive and actionable for healthcare organizations of all sizes. The collaborative, open source repository of machine learning tools and expertise including topical blog content and weekly live hands-on machine learning educational broadcasts, makes it easy to deploy machine learning in any environment.
Now, to bring the life-saving technology to hospitals and patients everywhere, Health Catalyst is embedding machine learning as a core capability across the company’s entire product line in an initiative called catalyst.ai™. With optimized machine learning models built into every Health Catalyst application, organizations can leverage the technology for predictions such as identifying patients who are most likely to acquire deadly infections; finding those who may have trouble paying their medical bills; spotting possible canceled appointments before they happen; or launching proactive medical interventions for patients who are at risk for dangerous complications.
Together, healthcare.ai and catalyst.ai represent the next generation of healthcare analytics. With these machine learning innovations now readily available to organizations large and small, American healthcare will be equipped to exchange today’s limited, retrospective analysis for a new era of powerful, predictive analytics driving an orders-of-magnitude improvement in outcomes.
“Predictive analytics powered by machine learning has truly vast potential in healthcare, but we lag other industries by several years largely because early efforts were extremely expensive one-off models requiring an army of data scientists to write and test the algorithms behind the technology,” said Health Catalyst Executive Vice President of Product Development Dale Sanders. “catalyst.ai solves that problem by lowering the bar for entry and enabling data architects and analysts to become ‘citizen data scientists.’
“Another factor limiting the usefulness of machine learning is that healthcare data is far more complex than data in other industries and difficult to aggregate. Machine learning algorithms are only as good as the volume and quality of data that feeds them. We’ve invested tens of millions of dollars over the last few years to create high-volume high-quality data content that these algorithms thrive on, and we are embedding the results in the workflow of clinicians in every department across a hospital or health system.”
Indiana University Health uses machine learning to reduce hospital-acquired infectionsHealth Catalyst machine learning has already been deployed at multiple client sites with promising outcomes. Indiana University Health (IU Health), a 17-hospital nationally recognized healthcare system, engaged Health Catalyst machine learning in an attempt to reduce healthcare associated infections (HAI) and achieve zero central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs). Of the 41,000 patients who develop a CLABSI in US hospitals each year, one in four die, according to a Centers for Disease Control study. IU Health wanted to be able to predict which patients are most likely to develop a CLABSI so clinicians could proactively undertake prevention activities 100 percent of the time.
IU Health used Health Catalyst’s enterprise data warehouse (EDW) and catalyst.ai-driven analytics to bridge information gaps in its EMR data and to paint a complete picture of patients’ CLABSI risk. Models on the data were developed and tested by Health Catalyst using machine learning algorithms such as logistic regression and random forest—the workhorses of the machine learning world. This led to the development of a CLABSI risk prediction model that is built into a unit-level dashboard used by nursing staff to identify patient-level care gaps. In addition to the risk score, the top three risk factors for each high-risk patient are displayed, providing immediate insight into specific actions that can reduce the CLABSI risk for these patients.
As a result, today IU Health can predict which patients with a central line will develop a CLABSI with an estimated 87 percent accuracy and a false positive rate of 0.16.
“We have quite a few initiatives centered on hospital-acquired harm events that are supported with analytics,” said Kristen Kelley, Director of Infection Prevention at IUH, in a recent Scottsdale Institute report on the project. “We are on the cutting edge. In the past six months we’ve experienced a 20 percent decrease in CLABSI and a 30 percent drop in harm events overall. So we are headed in the right direction.”
Machine learning + data = success
catalyst.ai’s effectiveness is closely tied to Health Catalyst’s proven ability to integrate high-volume data from virtually every internal and external source available. Because multiple sources of data are required for machine learning to develop the models that drive predictive analytics, the technology is more effective the more data is present. Most companies providing machine learning solutions require customers to figure out how to connect up to 100 different data sources to make the technology work. By contrast, Health Catalyst’s EDW integrates 120 different data sources, including the electronic health record (EHR), claims, key financial, operational and patient satisfaction systems.“I want to acknowledge Eric Just, Dr. Levi Thatcher, and the rest of our Data Science team who are making breakthrough progress, unlike any vendor in the market, including the largest players,” said Sanders. “At Health Catalyst we have a proven track record and know how to make outcomes improvement work. We know how clinicians use data to make decisions. We understand the context in which the machine learning insight needs to be delivered, and the right time and modality to deliver that insight. That knowledge is built into catalyst.ai, scaling machine learning and outcomes improvement for use by virtually any organization. The bottom line is that we believe our clients will save many more lives and improve the care process for everyone.”
Machine learning models available today
In addition to its CLABSI risk prediction model, Health Catalyst has leveraged catalyst.ai to deploy numerous predictive models at launch that are useful for clinical, financial and operational decision support, including clinical decision support models for:- Central line-associated bloodstream infection future risk (CLABSI)
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) readmission risk
- Pre-surgical risk for bowel surgery
- Diabetes future risk
- Financial and operational decision support models such as propensity to pay and appointment no-show risk
In addition to predictive models, Health Catalyst is currently developing algorithms that use machine learning to identify treatment patterns that lead to better outcomes. These algorithms will be used to drive treatment decisions on patients by showing how ‘patients like this’ were treated and what the outcomes were for a cohort of similar patients.

Vital to Demonstrate New Image Sharing Strategy
Sharing capabilities for Vitrea® Enterprise Imaging Customers
MINNEAPOLIS,MN – February 13, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Vital Images, Inc. (Vital), a Minneapolis-based advanced medical imaging and informatics company will be demonstrating new image sharing capabilities for current Vital customers. The solution allows users to share images from different types of media between providers, hospitals and patients.
“Image sharing capability is becoming a core expectation of an enterprise imaging architecture,” says Tim Dawson, VP of Technology at Vital Images. “The inefficient workflows tied to patients carrying CDs or clinicians having to physically go to different workstations are simply no longer acceptable. Too many studies are still being repeated due to missing or unavailable images at time of treatment, leading to added expense and radiation dose. Vital’s DICOMwebTM-driven Vitrea Enterprise Viewer is the perfect delivery mechanism for viewing these image sets in almost any setting, and on any device.”

Pursuit Healthcare Advisors Makes another Philanthropic Donation to Increase the Primary & Holistic Care for the Uninsured
PHILADELPHIA, PA – February 9, 2017 — Pursuit Healthcare Advisors, LLC (Pursuit) announced today that they will be donating a minimum of $1,000 in 2017 to increase Population Health initiatives within a local community. In late 2016, after hearing an inspiring presentation by Dr. Mary Wirship, our first contribution of $500 was awarded to Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) in support of their mission to “provide compassionate primary medical and dental care and health education to people who live or work in Chester County, Pennsylvania who lack access to insurance, in order to support their goals to lead productive, healthy, and hopeful lives.” CVIM’s patients are hardworking individuals who have no insurance and make less than 300% of the Federal Poverty Line.
Pursuit believes in the importance of primary care as an integral piece of our healthcare system and the role it plays in delivering quality care that improves health outcomes. Not only can effective primary care reduce the instances of hospitalizations and the use of acute care facilities, but available primary care can also promote health equity across disparate populations.
“We know that socioeconomic status has strong implications for a person’s overall health and wellness,” says Cyndi Vely Cahill, Managing Partner of Pursuit. “We are proud to support the immediate and sustainable impact CVIM provides to their population’s health. Pursuit recognizes and applauds the holistic approach to creating a medical home for the underinsured and working poor of Chester County, and we are proud to play a small role in supporting such a service.”

MedeAnalytics Receives 2017 Certification from NCQA for HEDIS Certified MeasuresSM
EMERYVILLE, CA – February 9, 2017 — MedeAnalytics today announced that it has achieved 2017 National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) certification on all Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS)® certified measuresSM within its Quality Management solution. One of the first vendors to achieve certification for 2017, MedeAnalytics Quality Management empowers health plan customers with the ability to rapidly improve HEDIS performance, ultimately improving quality care for their members. Audit and chart chase support artifacts are built into the certified logic, simplifying an often painful and time-consuming process. The certified HEDIS measure module leverages MedeAnalytics’ investment in Apache® SparkTM technology that provides increased performance gains with validated calculations in minutes.
“Quality of care will continue to be a primary focus for healthcare, and as one of the earliest recipients of the NCQA certification, MedeAnalytics continues to demonstrate our ability to support clients with the best solutions to implement and measure their quality management programs,” said Andrew Hurd, CEO of MedeAnalytics. “What’s most exciting is that once you have enabled your customers to get validated results in minutes, you open the door for direct provider participation in quality improvement and supplemental data capture, something many of our customers are doing today. It really changes the payer-provider dynamic and delivers enhanced health value for consumers.”
MedeAnalytics’ Quality Management provides scalable, quality reporting with speed, frequency and integrated analytics power unmatched in the industry. The solution covers HEDIS, P4P, Medicare Star Ratings, AHRQ, QRS, PQRS and custom measures. These measures can be updated as often as daily and are integrated within a platform that enables member and claim-level granularity, all with audit and chase support built-in. Those insights help to identify gaps in care and ensure members meet quality standards. Quality Management manages the performance requirements from multiple governing bodies to reduce overall administrative complexity and standardize measurement processes.
NCQA’s HEDIS Measure Certification is precise, automated testing that verifies compliance with HEDIS Specifications and satisfies the source code review portion of the HEDIS Compliance AuditTM. HEDIS is a set of standardized performance measures designed to make sure purchasers and consumers have the information they need to reliably compare the performance of managed health care organizations.
