It’s in Their DNA: Avera Health Uses Pharmacogenomics, MEDITECH EHR to Drive Precision Medicine
WESTWOOD, MA – February 7, 2017 — When a 2013 study suggested that pharmacogenomics, the study of how genes affect an individual’s response to medication, could be used to improve the quality and safety of patient care, MEDITECH customer Avera Health (Sioux Falls, SD) made the commitment to transform paper-oriented workflows at their state-of-the-art human molecular genetics laboratory, Avera Institute for Human Genetics (AIHG). Avera’s IT Committee realized the importance of leveraging their MEDITECH Electronic Health Record (EHR) for pharmacogenomics, and have used a three-phased approach for their improvement project—documentation, ordering, and clinical decision support alerts.
Avera’s clinical integration team implemented processes that incorporate pharmacogenomics into the clinical workflow, putting valuable genetic information in front of providers at the point of medication ordering.
In addition, by automating pharmacogenomics into the clinicians’ workflow, Avera has enabled providers to:
- Order the patient’s optimal pain medication at the outset
- Reduce medication side effects
- Improve treatment success
- Contribute to shorter lengths of stay.
“Avera Health is proud of our efforts in leveraging the MEDITECH EHR to incorporate pharmacogenomics right at the provider’s fingertips for improved workflows and advanced patient care,”Chief Medical Information Officer of Avera Health, Kim Jundt, MD said. “We value our partnership with MEDITECH in providing the highest quality of care to our community.”
For Avera, one of the most important aspects of preemptive testing was to have an alerting process in place for providers who will treat the patient during future care episodes. Rules created in MEDITECH’s CPOE solution flag the provider based on the results of the patient’s pain genotyping panel. In addition, a “duplicate order” alert informs the provider that the patient has already had pain genotyping, and the once-in-a-lifetime lab test is not needed again.
“By leveraging the power and clinical sophistication of the MEDITECH EHR, Avera is transforming and improving the quality and safety of patient care,” MEDITECH Associate Vice President of Marketing, Christine Parent said. “We’re proud to partner with this progressive healthcare organization in providing the actionable data needed to impact clinical decision making.”
For more information on how Avera converted pharmacogenomic results to actionable data for clinical decision making, download MEDITECH’s new case study, “It’s in Their DNA: Avera Health Drives Precision Medicine at the Point of Care.”

Spok Debuts Latest Evolution of Spok Care Connect® with Enhanced Clinical Context, Powerful Integrations
SPRINGFIELD, VA – February 7, 2017 — Spok, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Spok Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPOK) and the leader in healthcare communications, will demonstrate the latest evolution of its integrated communications platform at the 2017 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition, to be held Feb. 19-23 in Orlando. This release of Spok Care Connect® offers new functionality to deliver smarter clinical communications that enable care teams to improve the delivery of patient care.
Spok Care Connect now gives clinicians the ability to add clinical context to a secure message to aid in decision-making, regardless of what device is used. Spok Care Connect pulls relevant information from a hospital’s admit, discharge, and transfer (ADT) system to include in alerts and alarm notifications. This enables physicians and nurses to be better informed and respond more effectively for their patients.
For example, when a nurse call is initiated from a patient room, the assigned nurse will also be notified of any relevant patient information, such as allergies or the fact that the patient is a fall risk. This helps them to prioritize and speed response to the patient. This message can also be sent to the clinician’s device of choice: Spok is device-neutral, so there is no need to dictate the type of device each clinician needs to carry.
“The patient-centric messaging capabilities of Spok Care Connect now allow physicians and nurses to have more clinically relevant information at their fingertips to support care decisions,” said Hemant Goel, president of Spok, Inc. “These new features are a direct result of listening to our customers and translating their feedback into enhanced solutions.”
Also supporting the Spok Care Connect platform are powerful new integrations with the solutions of Rauland-Borg and QGenda. The Spok suite now includes support for the latest technology from the Rauland Responder® 5 system, which integrates with Spok clinical alerting via SIP protocol. Combined with ResponderSync, the improved connectivity with SIP provides faster notification and alert delivery to clinicians without the need for legacy serial TAP integration.
Spok’s new integration with QGenda, a provider of cloud-based automated physician scheduling solutions, allows physician on-call schedules to be pushed into the Spok Care Connect on-call schedules. This enables Spok to route messages to both people and third-party systems based on scheduling information that resides in QGenda. Because up-to-date schedules are available to physicians, nurses, operators, and other staff looking to coordinate care around the clock, they can be more productive and spend more time with their patients.
Other upgrades in the latest version of the Spok Care Connect platform include:
- Secure Texting: Spok Care Connect features improved reliability and a streamlined registration process for
the Spok Mobile® secure messaging app, which makes it easier for Spok Mobile customers to roll out
the solution to large numbers of clinical end users. - Hospital Contact Center: Spok console customers are able to update their availability status via
the Spok Mobile app, which then will apply across the system for all messages they receive. This allows
busy clinicians to easily update their availability status on the go and enables them to message colleagues
who are readily available and avoid disrupting those who are with patients or off-duty. - Computer Telephony Integration (CTI): Spok Care Connect is now compatible with Cisco
Unified Communications Manager (CallManager) version 11.0, and it has also received Avaya Aura®
Application Enablement Services (AES) 7 certification to support seamless integration with these systems.
Spok will have team members as well as several customers available to discuss the Spok Care Connect platform at HIMSS17 in booth 2671. Spok Care Connect will also be featured in the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase™. In addition, company executives will be available to meet with participating hospital CIOs at the CHIME/HIMSS CIO Forum, Feb. 18-19 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando.
To schedule a meeting with Spok at HIMSS17, visit spok.com/HIMSS.

Saint Francis Healthcare Partners Selects Orion Health’s Precision Medicine Platform to enable high-quality care coordination across the continuum
HARTFORD, CT & SCOTTSDALE, AZ – February 7, 2017 — Orion Health™ has signed a new agreement with Saint Francis Healthcare Partners (SFHCP), a growing network of more than 1,000 independent health care providers serving over 100,000 patients in Connecticut.
Saint Francis Healthcare Partners—the physician hospital organization (PHO) and accountable care organization (ACO ) for Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center (Trinity Health – New England)—will deploy Orion Health’s Amadeus precision medicine platform, which leverages open-data technology to capture, store and align patient information from multiple providers and insurers. In addition, SFHCP has purchased Orion Health’s Coordinate and Amadeus Analytics products to ensure the timely delivery of incisive patient information to health care professionals.
“The personalized health solution will enable SFHCP to proactively share patient information and treatment plans across the care continuum,” said Suzanne Cogan, Vice President, Orion Health. “This is an important step in the PHO/ACO’s journey from population health to precision medicine.”
“SFHCP requires a robust IT infrastructure that scales across the many venues of care in which patients are seen,” added Cogan. “Orion Health’s solution will enable greater collaboration between SFHCP’s partners and other trusted healthcare providers in the patient’s circle of care, such as hospitals and insurers.”
SFHCP’s Chief Medical Informatics and Quality Officer, Sudeep Bansal, M.D., M.S., said the PHO/ACO chose Orion Health following a competitive selection process because of its single suite of synergistic products that enable in-depth analysis and interoperability at both a population and an individual patient level.
“Orion Health is the only software provider with a truly integrated population health management technology stack that was built organically,” Dr. Bansal said. “The company’s technology is built on modern architecture that will evolve and adapt to meet the rapidly changing business and health care climate in which we operate.”
He added: “The platform is flexible, so that it can be adapted to different health care delivery models. In addition, the data analytics capabilities allow us to identify high-risk patients, which allows us to intervene earlier, enhance preventive care and improve the quality of care we deliver.”
Wayne Oxenham, President-North America at Orion Health, said the company’s solutions are future-proofed to assist health care providers and insurers in making the transition to precision medicine, also known as personalized health care.
“The Amadeus precision medicine platform is appealing to a wide range of health care providers and insurers; this will be the sixth significant US deployment since we launched the platform last year,” Oxenham said. “It is exciting that SFHCP has chosen to enhance the platform with value-added products that will greatly increase its ability to deliver better health outcomes for the growing number of patients in its care.”

Health Catalyst Congratulates Allina Health on Earning Healthcare Informatics Innovation Award
Minnesota health system recognized for development of a healthcare delivery innovation center to improve cardiovascular outcomes & realize $75 million in savings
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – February 2, 2017 — Health Catalyst, a leader in healthcare data warehousing and analytics, today congratulated Allina Health on winning first place in the prestigious 2017 Innovator Awards, presented by Healthcare Informatics magazine, recognizing the nation’s most innovative healthcare organizations.
The annual Innovator Awards recognize leadership teams from hospitals, medical groups, integrated health systems, and other healthcare organizations that have effectively deployed information technology to improve clinical, administrative, financial, or organizational performance.
Allina Health, a 13-hospital, 61-clinic integrated delivery network (IDN) that includes three large cardiac care centers, earned its recognition by deciding to take on one of the most daunting tasks for any health system—the overwhelming financial and human burden of cardiovascular (CV) disease. To optimize CV care, Allina Health established the Minneapolis Heart Institute Center for Healthcare Delivery Innovation (MHI-HDI) in pursuit of triple aim goals—removing waste, underpayments, and inconsistent charting and coding. MHI-HDI’s priorities included implementing process improvements related to supply chain, overutilization, clinical practice and clinical documentation.
In recognizing Allina, the magazine’s judges cited the health system’s groundbreaking progress in the use of data and information technology to rework CV care processes to achieve significant clinical improvements and $75 million in cumulative cost savings. The savings reflect annual improvement between $2 and $12 million over a four-year period. Specific results from the initiative include:
- Reduction in over-utilization:
- A 62 percent reduction in troponins ordered over third order after 24 hours
- A 96 percent reduction in creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) orders
- An annual reduction of 886 units of blood given a to CV surgery patients
- A 400-day reduction in length of stay (LOS) for heart failure (HF) patients.
- Reduction in clinical variation and increased use of best practices:
- A 41 percent increase in use of a standardized Atrial fibrillation protocol
- 511 more high-risk percutaneous cardiac intervention (PCI) patients received closure devices to
prevent bleeding risks - 481 additional patients received heart failure (HF) care coordination
- Consolidated CV supply spend across the health system to obtain more advantageous volume pricing
with supply chain vendors - Improvements in capturing patient acuity to enable more thorough coding and billing
“Cardiovascular disease accounts for nearly one out of every three deaths in the United States, and it comes with significant costs,” said Dan Burton, CEO of Health Catalyst. “The dramatic results from Allina Health’s initiative demonstrates the power of leveraging data and analytic resources to optimize cardiovascular care in terms of improving care quality, access to care, and removing unnecessary waste and underpayment.”
The MHI-HDI Center leveraged the existing infrastructure of Allina Health’s enterprise data warehouse (EDW) and cardiology participation in national registries to uncover data insights that would identify key areas for clinical improvement. Allina Health discovered opportunities related to: HF; acute myocardial infarction (AMI); lab test utilization; community health trends; LOS and use of intensive care unit (ICU) beds; PCI and bleeding complications; blood utilization; and atrial fibrillation (A-fib) treatment.
Allina Health has subsequently launched 42 clinical transformation programs with plans to continue the expansion.
