Thought Leadership Made Easy; Planning College LIVE Presentations for Maximum Impact
2.6.18
By Arika Lycan, Specialist, CHIME FoundationThere are many ways, small and big, to highlight your firm through utilizing your CHIME Foundation membership benefits. Several benefits offer the opportunity to share concepts and ideas in the realm of thought leadership. Online Focus Groups and submitting research documents through KnowledgeHub both have their own merits, but the unique educational potential of the College LIVE format should not be overlooked.
Here is a look at the College LIVE benefit and a review of tips, tricks and advice from a fellow CHIME Foundation member.
Submission basics:
- Proposal form is available on the CHIME website here
- College LIVEs are hosted at noon EST on Wednesdays
- Events are scheduled at least a month ahead of desired webinar date
- Sessions are 60 minutes in length
- Presentation will be recorded and archived on KnowledgeHub
We reached out to Bob Chaput, CEO of Clearwater Compliance LLC, a CHIME Foundation member, to get his take on Clearwater’s most recent College LIVE experience. “As a new Foundation member,” Chaput says, our goal was “simply to facilitate process of helping members come to know us, hopefully like us and begin to trust us.” College LIVE presentations have value for both seasoned CHIME Foundation members as well as new members hoping to establish their identity in the CHIME Community.
Since College LIVEs are an educational format vs. a discussion format, it’s a good idea when developing your College LIVE presentation to plan to make the most of audience engagement. Chaput suggests ideas like using polling questions, if appropriate, allowing for comments and feedback, and “providing valuable follow-up material,” to extend the impact of your engagement with CHIME CIOs.
There is always something to be learned after a “first” experience. Chaput shares some of the insights his team reflected on after their first College LIVE experience, including “have fewer slides, allow more time for Q&A, seek responses to polling questions and use as an opportunity to learn about members’ challenges.”
Results from prior webinars also indicate that highly rated College LIVE sessions involve CIOs who share best practices and value derived from utilizing Foundation Firm services and solutions.
For firms with goals like increased exposure and knowledge-sharing, hosting a College LIVE presentation can be a key part of your CHIME strategy for success. Chaput shares the way in which Clearwater Compliance LLC judged their event’s success, including “measured by positive evaluations, business contacts and additional educational opportunities.” As you reflect on the research and innovation, development and creativity that drives your company, consider sharing that energy and vision in a College LIVE presentation in the 2018-2019 membership year.

Two Perspectives – From both sides of a Focus Group
2.6.18
By Arika Lycan, Specialist, CHIME FoundationPlanning and executing a successful focus group is an investment of time, money, staff resources and effort. With that understanding, we reached out to some long-time CHIME members with a unique perspective. These CHIME/CHIME Foundation members have experience in healthcare IT both as CIOs or the equivalent and as Industry partners.
Shane Pilcher, administrative director and CIO at Siskin Hospital, Drex DeFord, a self-described “recovering-CIO” and Spencer Hamons, executive architect and strategic adviser at NetApp, shared their views on the focus group concept, from planning and facilitation to the selection process as a CIO.
Following are some of the many valuable insights they provided.
Q: If you were to design a focus group or similar effort now, would you change the process or design? If so, how?
Pilcher (current CIO, former industry partner): “Not really. After being involved in developing and presenting numerous focus groups over the years, we learned the key goal was to stimulate meaningful conversation. There were always questions we had about how to present or package a service and in many cases we received those answers. However, so much was learned by posing meaningful and pertinent questions and letting the CIOs share from their vast experiences and knowledge. To have CIOs with 10 to 20 years’ experience in the industry around one table is invaluable. Get them to start sharing some of that knowledge and everyone attending the focus group benefits. It also helps to start or solidify relationships between your organization and that CIO. A really good focus group is memorable and stands out. The key goal remains meaningful conversation among the CIOs attending.
Q: What insight did you take away as a CIO that you would now apply if facilitating/planning a focus group?
Hamons (industry partner, former CIO): “When planning focus groups as part of NetApp, we spent a lot of time trying to avoid the time devolving to a “sales pitch,” and to frame the conversation in a way that the CIOs present in the focus group could truly provide feedback to us. Certainly, these CIOs are being paid to participate in the focus group, but more than the money, they want to be able to provide feedback. When facilitating the focus group, it is essential to keep the group engaged and involved, and have questions ready-to-go to elicit feedback if the group is not offering it outright.”
Q: When selecting Focus Groups, what do you look for and what do you hope to get from the experience?
Pilcher (current CIO, former industry partner): “I look for topics or Foundation firms that resonate at the time I select. When going to a conference, it is important to go with an agenda. That agenda can be to seek out a specific Foundation firm to have a conversation about a product you may be interested in. It also could be seeking out fellow CIOs who can provide advice and feedback you can use at your organization. Since these agendas are identified in advance, finding focus groups that fit the agenda is important. Since that message can also get drowned out among the other focus groups, it is important to create a catchy title that can stand out and ensure the description is detailed only enough to help us understand what the focus group will be about. The worst kind of focus group is one that even after attending, you cannot truly articulate its purpose. So, make sure you understand your purpose before designing your focus group, provide enough detail on what that purpose will be, and then deliver exactly what you said your focus group would deliver.
DeFord (consultant, former CIO): “I’d rather be in a session with Foundation firms and CIOs that I know are innovative and breaking new ground. My favorites are driven by facilitators who, in the very best cases, drive conversations about a hot topic, and allow the CIOs in the focus group to debate and share. As an industry partner, you should be interested in gathering intelligence, so when you create a situation where you’re essentially “eavesdropping” on CIOs talking to each other, you’ve hit a home run. Those conversations are the best part of the forum.
Q: If/when you participated in focus groups previously, what did you find most valuable?
Hamons (industry partner, former CIO): When I participated in focus groups as CIO of a health system, the most valuable part was when our discussions were robust and where we all left the room feeling as if we had learned something from each other – not necessarily from the Foundation firm.
DeFord, Pilcher and Hamons’ insights are valuable as they can see the perspective of our CHIME CIO members, but they’ve been on the business/industry partner side of the fence. They understand the objectives and value you hope to gain from implementing your focus group(s). We will be featuring thoughts on overall CIO engagement from this experienced group in a future edition of Insight, so stay tuned.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Prior to that, he spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a regional CIO, a medical center CIO, and chief technology officer for the USAF Health System’s World-Wide Operations.
Shane Pilcher, CHCIO-Eligible, FHIMSS – Administrative Director and CIO at Siskin Hospital

Previously, he was a consultant with Stoltenberg Consulting for 14 years, working with many projects as part of the implementation or optimization teams and system selections. 2.6.18

Over the past month we held two additional webinars that may be of interest: One on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) vision for the future of quality measurement and another that provided an update on Medicare telehealth reimbursement.
- On Jan. 16, CMS leadership presented an overview of “Meaningful Measures.”
- On Feb. 1, Brian Scarpelli, senior policy counsel with ACT, Pamela McNutt, senior vice president and CIO at Methodist Health System, and Nicole Kerkenbush, chief performance officer at Regional Health, discussed telehealth reimbursement and other issues.
Foundation firm members should email us at [email protected] if you would like to sign up for our upcoming webinar or would like to review material covered in previous webinars.
We also have identified opportunities for Foundation firm members to participate on federal workgroups.
Foundation firm members who want to share their expertise with policy makers can apply to be considered for some new work groups. As part of the 21st Century Cures Act, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) formed a committee that included private sector and federal individuals. They are tasked with making recommendations around interoperability, among many other health IT topics. CHIME has both member and Foundation firm representation on the new Health IT Advisory Committee (HITAC). HITAC met publicly for the first time Jan. 18. Materials from the meeting are here.
The new body will be reviewing the recently released Trust Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA). Those interested in volunteering for new HITAC workgroups, Trusted Exchange Framework Task Force and U.S. Core Data for Interoperability Task Force on TEFCA, can volunteer here.

Inside CHIME: CHIME Opioid Task Force Gets Under Way and Welcomes Member Participation
2.1.18 Ed Kopetsky, LCHIME, FCHIME, CIO, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital
Jim Turnbull, LCHIME, FCHIME, CIO, University of Utah Health
Last week, CHIME convened the first meeting of the CHIME Opioid Task Force. Those of you who attended the CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Antonio may recall that one of us – Jim Turnbull – announced from the stage that CHIME planned to launch a task force to address the opioid crisis in the United States. The impetus for this decision came from a tragedy experienced by another one of us – Ed Kopetsky.
That tragedy was the recent loss of a son to opioids. Tim Kopetsky died from an overdose at the young age of 31.
This is a tragedy that touches many lives. Opioid addiction is often called an invisible disease. It strikes families from all demographics and age groups, sadly even newborns whose first experience out of the womb is feeling the pangs of withdrawal. It entraps youths prescribed powerful pain killers after an injury and adults under treatment (or overtreatment) for chronic pain.
As co-chairs of the CHIME Opioid Task Force, we invite CHIME and CHIME Foundation members to join us in a fight against opioid addiction. We believe CHIME is well positioned to help bend the curve of this exploding epidemic. Why? Because CHIME members have the data, the knowledge and the commitment as healthcare IT leaders to find and share solutions to this problem. In addition, CHIME has strong relationships with many organizations and institutions that can help us raise awareness and meet our goal.
During the first day of our meeting in Washington, task force members heard presentations from two experts in the field of addiction: Kana Enomoto, senior adviser to the U.S. Surgeon General and former acting administrator at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA; and Chris Wilkins, founder and president emeritus of Loyola Recovery Foundation. It became clear that the challenge is critical and immense. Immense but not immutable.
“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.” Enomoto shared that quotation from Martin Luther King Jr. during her talk, and it is a sentiment we embraced as we broke into work groups to begin defining our scope and purpose.
The next day, a panel of Congressional staffers and legislative aides updated us on key bills and issues. We had some lively discussions about Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs, which vary across states. (You likely will hear more on this subject from the task force in the future.) For the present, we are developing an action plan, based on the insights and recommendations of our work groups.
One thing is clear about the opioid epidemic: It affects all of us. Many of us have personal stories involving family members, friends and acquaintances who struggle with addiction.
Tim died after fighting addiction to opioids for 10 years, and he was in successful recovery for the last five years. The devil is never far away, though. In helping a friend who relapsed and survived an overdose, Tim came into contact with heroin and lost control. He died that evening. His friend returned from the hospital and died of a second overdose the next day.
We believe something good can come from this tragedy. It is our turn as CIOs and healthcare IT executives to step up, to lead and to show others the way forward. The staircase may be long. It may be steep. But we have faith and we have taken the first step.
Please join us in this journey. You can learn more about the task force here. To get involved, please go here.

As CHIME reported earlier, Randy McCleese, CIO of Methodist Hospital in Henderson, Ky., will receive the 2017 John E. Gall Jr. CIO of the Year award. The award is given annually to a CIO who has shown significant leadership and commitment to the healthcare industry during his or her career. The recipient is selected jointly by the boards of CHIME and HIMSS. He has been a member of CHIME since 1998 and has held numerous leadership positions, including a member of the CHIME Board of Trustees from 2012-2015; CHIME Board chair in 2014; CHIME Foundation Board chair in 2015; and chair of the CHIME Policy Steering Committee in 2015. In 2016, he won both the CHIME Federal Public Policy Award for CIO Leadership and the Outstanding Service Award.
Colin Banas, M.D., will receive the HIMSS/AMDIS Physician Executive Leader of the Year Award. The HIMSS-AMDIS Physician Executive Leader of the Year Award recognizes a physician leader who demonstrates significant leadership in optimizing health engagement and care outcomes through information technology.
Banas is a board-certified internist, CMIO and an associate professor in internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He heads the Office of Clinical Transformation, a group of clinicians and support staff that drives innovation and optimization into the application of information technology at the point of care. His interests center on novel forms of clinical decision support – those that are outside of the realm of traditional rules and alerts – and include real-time dashboarding for the health system’s Safety Dashboard and Early Warning System and intuitive usability designs.
Liz Johnson, chair of the CHIME Foundation Board and CIO of Acute Care Hospitals & Applied Clinical Informatics at Tenet Healthcare Corporation, will receive the Distinguished Fellows Service Award. The award recognizes commendable and long-standing contributions to HIMSS made by a fellow member.
In addition, Susan Snedaker, director of IT infrastructure and operations at Tucson Medical Center, will be honored with the Book of the Year Award for “Leading Healthcare IT: Managing to Succeed” and three CHIME members – Diane Carr, CIO at North Bronx Healthcare Network; Patricia Hale, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of informatics at Albany Medical Center; and Michael Zaroukian, M.D., Ph.D., vice president and CMIO at Sparrow Health System – will receive HIMSS North America Board of Directors Service awards.
