Orion Health Unveils New Predictive Intelligence Using Machine Learning to Help Save Billions in Healthcare Costs
New service, Amadeus Intelligence, uses deep learning to produce more accurate predictive analysis for multiple uses
LAS VEGAS, NV – March 6, 2018 – Orion Health today announced its machine learning service, Amadeus Intelligence, designed to help the health sector reduce operating costs and improve patient care. Led by ground-breaking research in machine learning, Orion Health is exploring meaningful ways to minimize waste in the healthcare sector and help clinicians make more accurate decisions at the point of care.
More than a third of the United States’ $3 trillion[1] healthcare expenditure is wasted on unnecessary services and excess administration. With an aging population and a growing number of people with chronic illnesses, the issue is set to worsen.
Speaking from HIMSS in Las Vegas, Ian McCrae, CEO of Orion Health said, “More than $1 trillion in the U.S. is wasted each year on costly administration and avoidable hospital readmissions. Orion Health’s Amadeus Intelligence will use machine learning models initially to predict patient costs and readmission risks, analyze clinical and financial outliers and enable accurate diagnosis coding and quality metric reporting to improve decision making at the point of care and target resources which will result in significant cost savings.”
“We have yet to see the true impact of machine learning on healthcare. The last decade has been focused on integrating IT systems and capturing massive amounts of information about patients and their environments, the next decade will be to connect all that data and use machine learning for daily healthcare decisions, driving improved care, operational efficiencies, and cost effectiveness,” said McCrae.
Unlike most current uses of machine learning, Amadeus Intelligence ingests and combines multiple datasets from diverse data sources to predict multiple outcomes – financial, operational and administrative.
“The key to making a meaningful impact on healthcare is in the accuracy of the prediction, and the ability to respond,” said McCrae. “Tapping into the vast amounts of data available through many different sources — including relevant genomic, socio-economic and behavioral data, information from devices, and data based on demographics and climate — will engender better decision-making, drawing on information from entire populations to treat and manage a person’s health. Today healthcare organizations need more accuracy in their predictive analytics to reduce operational costs and improve patient care and outcomes.”
[1] Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Readmission rates remain a costly challenge for healthcare organizations. With 17.6% of hospitalizations in the U.S. resulting in a re-hospitalization within 30 days, an estimated 76% of those re-hospitalizations are potentially avoidable, costing $30 billion. Research from Orion Health’s public private partnership, Precision Driven Health used a breadth of data types and applied machine learning models to achieve greater predictive accuracy, calculating potential savings four times higher than current predictive models. Using machine learning techniques, healthcare can expect larger reductions in readmission rates achieved in a far more cost-effective manner.
With more than 20 years building technology for the healthcare sector, Orion Health is working with select customers to apply machine learning to deeply mine the data within these organizations. While still in its infancy, data analysis combined with the rise of machine learning will provide clinical and financial insights to accelerate precision medicine, improve personalized treatments and maximize cost effectiveness of interventions.
Machine learning is perfectly suited to Orion Health’s existing product set. Using Orion Health’s Amadeus Platform and Rhapsody to ingest and manage multiple data types in large volumes and Amadeus Analytics to create cohorts based on existing and new insights, Amadeus Intelligence will apply machine learning to the data on the platform to enhance precision and prediction.
“Health data is varied in structure and quality, and Orion Health’s experience and expertise with this data combined with machine learning can unlock opportunities across the sector,” said McCrae.
The greater precision of identifying at risk populations will also transform the way clinicians work at the point of care. Unique to Orion Health, Amadeus Analytics and Amadeus Intelligence service connect seamlessly to its Amadeus Coordinate, care coordination tools including Care Plans and Pathways and Care Coordinator Activity Management which create actions and workflow to support identified patients.

Clearwater CEO Bob Chaput Shares Expertise on Insuring Hospital Cyber Risks Through Captives
Newest BOH Episode “Why Manage Cyber Risk though an Insurance Captive” Helps Hospitals Implement Best Practices
NASHVILLE, TN – February 13, 2018 – Bob Chaput, CEO of Clearwater Compliance, a top-ranked, award-winning provider of healthcare cyber risk management and compliance solutions, shares his expertise in the newest Business of Healthcare (BOH) episode, “Why Manage Cyber Risk through an Insurance Captive?” on insuring hospital cyber risks through captives.
BOH announced its newest episode designed to help hospital and health system leaders better understand how captive insurance proves to be critical in the ongoing effort to manage and reduce cyber risk. Chaput, along with Rebecca Cady, Vice President and Chief Risk Officer for Children’s National Health System, share their compelling expertise on ways health systems and hospitals can improve cyber risk management, transfer cyber risk, and better identify, manage and avoid cyber risk.
In the new BOH series, Chaput shares expertise on:
- How captives provide financial savings and leadership engagement in managing cyber risk.
- Ways insurance captives have improved risk identification and controls for patient safety risks over the past 20 years.
- Arguments in favor of and against placing cyber risk management into a captive.
- Best organizational cyber risk investments.
Hospitals and health systems use captive insurance as an alternative to commercial carriers for professional liability, property, and workers comp insurance. Over the past 20 years, captives have helped drive a reduction in malpractice claim and catastrophic patient injury, especially in obstetrics and emergency medicine. Large providers are now experimentally using captives for other forms of risk such as employee health plans, managed care contracts, and director and officer exposures. Cyber is a new risk strategic to captive insurance.

Clearwater Compliance Offers Webinar with Former OCR Top HIPAA Leader Iliana Peters
Clearwater Compliance Offers Webinar with Former OCR Top HIPAA Leader Iliana Peters
NASHVILLE, TN – March 1, 2018 – Iliana Peters, JD, CISSP, former Acting Deputy Director of HHS Office for Civil Rights, will offer advice in her first security industry webinar since she left the U.S. government. This free webinar, on March 14 at 11:00 ET, was created to help covered entities and business associates understand and act on the specific Risk Assessment requirements included in the HIPAA Security Final Rule. In “Understanding the Critical Difference: HIPAA Security Evaluation v. HIPAA Security Risk Assessment,” Peters will be joined by cyber risk management expert Bob Chaput, CEO of Clearwater Compliance.
During this interactive, 75-minute webinar, Peters and Chaput will focus on helping attendees:
- Understand and address three (3) very specific AND different HIPAA Security Rule assessment requirements;
- Explain why security opinions (e.g., SSAE Soc2) or “Certifications” (e.g., HITRUST) do NOT fully satisfy HIPAA compliance requirements; and,
- Articulate to colleagues and management what constitutes a comprehensive and accurate HIPAA Security Rule Risk Analysis.
Peters joined the Washington office of the law firm Polsinelli on Feb. 5, 2018.
“As the former Acting Deputy Director HHS Office for Civil Rights, I have seen firsthand, very highly regarded, and well-meaning companies respond to an OCR data request with what they thought was a good risk analysis, only to discover what they had was a gap or compliance analysis that is not sufficient for the HIPAA Security Rule’s requirements,” said Peters. “During the March 14th webinar, we will discuss some of the foundational requirements of the HIPAA Security Rule, specifically Risk Analysis and Evaluation.”“Clearwater’s education center is packed with resources to guide you at each stage of your information risk management journey,” said Chaput. “Our free webinar series reaches an audience of hundreds. In May 2017, when we presented with Leon Rodriguez, we had more than 1,000 people join us in that conversation,” said Chaput. “This sort of response is due in part to delivering, time and time again, what I see as our true purpose: providing deep insights into compliance and cyber risks.”

Nuance and Partners HealthCare Collaborate to Accelerate Widespread Development, Deployment and Adoption of AI Applications for Diagnostic Imaging
Collaboration Focused on Optimizing the Development, Clinical Validation and Usability of Practical AI Algorithms Through the Nuance AI Marketplace
Burlington, MA. and Las Vegas, NV. – March 05, 2018 – At HIMSS 2018, Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), (booth #1143) today announced the signing of a multi-year strategic agreement with Partners HealthCare. The two organizations will optimize the process for rapid development, validation and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) for radiologists at the point of care, and Nuance intends to make the new algorithms available through the Nuance AI Marketplace for Diagnostic Imaging. The collaboration will be executed through the recently formed Massachusetts General Hospital (“MGH”) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (“BWH”) Center for Clinical Data Science (“CCDS”) and will focus on improving radiologists’ efficiency and report quality, as well as patient clinical outcomes.
Nuance and Partners Healthcare will work together, and with other key supporters of the Nuance AI Marketplace for Diagnostic Imaging including NVIDIA and the American College of Radiology. The collective will continue to foster the democratization of Imaging AI, with an emphasis on automating many of the mundane and repetitive tasks radiologists face daily. The AI Marketplace is an open platform for developers, data scientists and radiologists to accelerate the development, deployment, and adoption of AI for medical imaging. Leveraging the 70 percent of Radiologists in the U.S. already using Nuance’s PowerScribe radiology reporting and PowerShare image exchange network, the AI Marketplace unlocks the power of AI for all radiologists and developers. Specifically, technology partners can now seamlessly deploy their algorithms into Nuance’s cloud-based PowerShare Network and users can easily select them through the PowerScribe radiology reporting platform. This enables the algorithms to be accessed within a radiologist’s native workflow, eliminating the need to buy new reporting or image sharing systems.
Accessibility and efficiency are major drivers of the work taking place at the CCDS. “We spend a lot of energy thinking about how to develop and effectively deliver tools into the clinical workflow – starting upstream with designing smarter imaging modalities to downstream automation of reporting workflows” said Mark Michalski, MD, Executive Director of the CCDS. “As AI tool sets are increasingly democratized, scaling the delivery and integration of these tools is likely to represent a barrier to broad adoption.” Through investment in the CCDS, MGH and BWH leadership is actively building the technical capabilities and industry relationships needed to lower these barriers and help bring solutions to market.
“For AI algorithms to be useful to radiologists and patients, it is critical that they are both clinically validated and accessible through the existing reporting workflow,” said Keith Dreyer, DO, PhD, FACR, FSIIM, Chief Data Science Officer, Partners HealthCare. “Through this collaboration with Nuance, radiologists will be able to access and leverage validated AI and deep learning algorithms without leaving their preferred workflow. Partnerships like this are a game changer given the time savings, increases in productivity and improved quality outcomes enabled for radiology staff.”
“Partners understands that for deep learning technologies to materially drive better patient outcomes and an enhanced experience for radiologists, a truly scalable and more systematic route to development, validation and adoption is required,” said Karen Holzberger, Vice President and General Manager, Healthcare Diagnostics, Nuance. “Through this collaboration, Nuance and Partners are working to ensure the AI Marketplace delivers these seamless and scalable capabilities within a nationwide network that already connects to the majority of all radiologists, hospitals and other key clinical system vendors in the US.”
To learn more about the Nuance AI Marketplace for Diagnostic Imaging, download the whitepaper, “AI Access for All: The power and promise of AI for radiology.” Nuance will demonstrate the AI Marketplace at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Meeting, at booth #1143 at the Sans Expo Center, March 5 – 9, in Las Vegas.

CHIME to Launch HealthCare’s Most Wired Survey by the End of March
ANN ARBOR, MI, March 5, 2018 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) will open the HealthCare’s Most Wired benchmarking survey for applicants before the end of March, CHIME Board Chair Cletis Earle announced today at the CHIME HIMSS CIO Forum in Las Vegas. The Most Wired program serves as a prominent measure of technology excellence in healthcare, honoring health systems for their outstanding healthcare IT programs.
“We are thrilled to continue Most Wired’s long tradition of celebrating the accomplishments of healthcare organizations that meet the highest standards in heath IT,” said Earle, senior vice president and CIO at Kaleida Health in Buffalo. “We have retained many features that healthcare leaders and their hospitals value, and added changes that will make this great program even greater.”
Among those changes are:
- A realignment of the survey’s timing to mirror health organizations’ data-gathering and reporting schedules
- A revision of the survey to remove antiquated parts, focus on outcomes and expand categories like cybersecurity that are increasingly relevant in today’s healthcare environment
- Naming a Board of Governors with no active CIOs as members to eliminate any perception of a conflict of interest
- Streamlining the application process
- Adding an auditing process so results won’t be based solely on self-reported data
- Adding features to facilitate participation by health organizations outside the U.S.
- Creating a transparent and accessible feedback process for participants
This is the first year CHIME will oversee the survey and recognition program after acquiring HealthCare’s Most Wired from the American Hospital Association last July. Participation is open to all CIOs and qualified health organizations.
“We encourage everyone to participate and join us in making Most Wired a powerful tool that informs best practices around the world,” said Russell Branzell, CHIME president and CEO. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to lead this effort.”
CHIME’s Most Wired team will keep the survey open for at least two months after the launch date. They expect to inform survey participants of the results and provide benchmarking reports by the end of August. CHIME will honor Most Wired recipients on Nov. 2 at the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Diego.
