CHIME Makes Opioid Task Force’s Inaugural Webinar Free, Open to Public
ANN ARBOR, MI, April 20, 2018 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) will kick off an educational initiative to stem the tide on the nation’s opioid epidemic with a webinar at noon April 25 that is free and open to the public. The webinar marks a milestone for the CHIME Opioid Task Force, which was launched in January to harness the knowledge and resources of CHIME and its members to combat a disease that claims 115 lives a day.
John Kravitz, CIO at Geisinger headquartered in Danville, Pa., and a member of the CHIME Board of Trustees and the CHIME Public Policy Steering Committee, will discuss Geisinger’s innovative use of healthcare IT to change providers’ opioid prescribing patterns in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania had the fourth highest opioid-related death rate in the U.S. in 2016, and many of the counties with the highest death rates were served by Geisinger. Geisinger, recognized as an innovator in the use of electronic health records and care delivery models, launched a program that reduced monthly opioid prescription rates by nearly 50 percent. Kravitz provided an overview of the program in testimony before a House subcommittee on April 12.
He will be joined by Richard Taylor, M.D., Geisinger’s chief medical information officer, and Michael Evans, vice president of enterprise pharmacy and chief pharmacy officer. Jim Turnbull, CIO at University of Utah Health in Salt Lake City and co-chair of the CHIME Opioid Task Force, will introduce them.
“Part of our mission as a task force is to share healthcare IT’s best practices for preventing opioid addiction, identifying those at risk of addiction and helping treat victims who become addicted to opioids,” Turnbull said. “We know that to be most effective, we need to involve the entire healthcare community, which is why we are making this and future webinars free and open to the public.”
The CHIME Opioid Task Force was formed after the opioid overdose death of the son of CHIME member Ed Kopetsky, CIO at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. Kopetsky is also co-chair of the task force. “For far too long, opioid addiction has been a silent disease in this country,” Kopetsky said. “CHIME and the Opioid Task Force are determined to shed light on this epidemic and look for solutions using our members’ expertise as healthcare IT leaders. We appreciate John’s generous offer to share the promising work done at Geisinger.”
Kravitz said the initiatives rolled out by Geisinger are broadly generalizable to healthcare systems across the U.S. To succeed, though, organizations will need support from their physician leadership and a commitment to eliminating unnecessary opioid prescribing. “Information technology is a powerful tool, but its effectiveness is limited without buy-in from clinicians and administrators,” Kravitz said. “We encourage others to work closely with their providers and executive teams as they apply these strategies in their organizations.”
Non-CHIME members can register for the webinar here. CHIME members can register here. To learn more about the CHIME Opioid Task Force, go here.

Geisinger’s Webinar Launches Opioid Task Force’s Educational Initiative
4/12/2018.2018
By John Kravitz, Corporate CIO, Geisinger Health SystemOn April 25, CHIME will mark a first in its history – two firsts, actually. CHIME will host its first educational webinar under the auspices of the Opioid Task Force; and for the first time, this webinar will be available online to not only CHIME members but to anyone, anywhere who wants to watch and learn from the presentation.
The CHIME Opioid Task Force’s mission is to stem the tide on the opioid epidemic in the United States. The task force determined earlier this year that CHIME was well positioned to tap into the talent and knowledge of our membership to identify and share best practices to reduce the rates of opioid-related addiction and deaths. They decided that to really move the needle on this devastating problem, the task force needed to extend its knowledge sharing beyond the CHIME community.
Geisinger has also been addressing the opioid epidemic in the 45 counties in central, south-central and northeast Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey that we serve. Opioid addiction and deaths have been increasing in our state, and particularly in many of the counties in our market. Geisinger, which is known as an innovator in the use of electronic health records and care delivery models, determined that the health system had an opportunity to use its resources to reverse these trends.
Two of my colleagues at Geisinger will join me in a webinar that details our approach to tackling the opioid epidemic. CMIO Richard Taylor, M.D., Vice President, Enterprise Pharmacy and Chief Pharmacy Officer Michael Evans and I will discuss how Geisinger reduced opioid prescription rates in our region by almost 50 percent using a multifaceted strategy. We started by creating a dashboard and analytic capabilities that allowed us to identify and target those outlier providers with high prescribing rates. We then developed pain management programs that minimized or eliminated the use of opioids; doing so, our physician leadership reasoned, would minimize or prevent a patient’s exposure to the drugs and the consequent risk of addiction, overdose and opioid-related death.
Although the dashboard may be unique to Geisinger, we believe other health systems and hospitals can generate similar reports on opioid prescribing through their EMR or clinical order entry systems. We will discuss how our approach can be applied in other healthcare settings during the webinar. CHIME and the CHIME Opioid Task Force also will offer a paper that goes into more detail about our opioid prescription reduction initiative.
Please join us at noon on April 25 for the first webinar being made available through the Opioid Task Force. An abstract and learning objectives are available here. To register for the webinar, go here. The webinar will be archived on the CHIME website for those who cannot attend or who want to review it at another time.

News of Note
4.12.2018
By Candace Stuart, Director, Communications & Public RelationsHere is a roundup from CHIME of recent news and upcoming events:
CHIME members can participate in a cybersecurity survey: KLAS and CHIME are partnering on a major cybersecurity research initiative designed to provide insights into the current status of medical device security in the healthcare industry. CHIME members can participate in this research by filling out an online questionnaire after which KLAS may arrange a quick follow-up call to clarify responses. The questions focus on technologies and services used to secure medical devices, as well as best practices by providers. Following the research process, KLAS will publish a comprehensive report based upon the feedback.
CHIME offers orientation webinar on TransformIT: CHIME will hold an orientation webinar on April 19 for members who want to learn more about TransformIT, a new analytic tool that allows members to benchmark their healthcare organizations and create custom reports. The aggregated data can give insights into implementations, solution partners, EHR systems, costs, and much more. Learn more about TransformIT here. Members who want to attend the webinar can register here.
CHIME is accepting proposals for track sessions and Leadership from the Edge: CHIME is encouraging members to submit proposals for the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum. CHIME’s 2017 Annual Report Serves as Benchmark for Members
4.12.2018
By Cletis Earle, Chair, CHIME Board; CIO – Kaleida HealthEarlier this month, CHIME published a 2017 Annual Report. This is the first annual report for CHIME in recent memory, and perhaps the first ever. The 2017 Annual Report is available online here. It can be downloaded, too, if you want to save a copy.
Preparing for the report’s Letter from the Chair made me think about the history of CHIME, where we started and where we have gone in a little over 25 years. CHIME was founded by 192 members who saw the need for an organization to support CIOs through education, collaboration and networking. Now our membership is north of 2,600 with CIOs and senior healthcare executives from around the globe. Our industry has changed drastically since 1992, as have our roles and responsibilities within healthcare organizations. What previously may have been a focus on technical knowledge and skill has expanded to include an ability to lead strategically in a complex, dynamic and diverse healthcare environment.
With the proliferation of EHRs has come the potential benefits of interconnectedness, allowing providers to share patients’ information digitally in real time – or nearly real time – within and across health systems. We know that much of that promise has yet to be realized, though. That is where our broad understanding of not just the technical barriers but also the institutional, regulatory and safety hurdles can help. Understanding alone won’t make this great promise a reality, either. As leaders in our health organizations, we apply our expertise and knowledge to educate and guide C-suite colleagues through these seemingly formidable but critical changes. And we do this together, sharing our experiences and successes through CHIME to collectively improve healthcare and health in our communities.
CHIME’s greatest success is the leadership shown by our members. If you have read the 2017 Annual Report, you know much of what is stated above appears in my Letter from the Chair and in other sections of the report. In part, the 2017 Annual Report celebrates you and how you have inspired CHIME and the Board of Trustees to stretch higher and higher. But it also is a benchmark for you to assess how well we serve you year after year.
The report allows us to track our progress and ensure the upward trajectory CHIME achieved in its first 25 years continues well into its second. Looking at where CHIME stands today, I am proud of what we have accomplished as an organization. I also am proud that we stayed true to our roots. We are still an organization that supports CIOs and senior healthcare IT executives through education, collaboration, networking – and now also through advocacy activities.
In today’s rapidly changing healthcare world, we must be nimble, adaptable, forward-looking and strategic to be exceptional leaders transforming healthcare. You will find that CHIME is stronger than it has ever been. I am confident we will meet any challenge that comes our way and not only succeed but excel.

Highlights from 2018 CHIME HIMSS CIO Forum and Week of HIMSS
4.06.18
By Rose Lucas- Specialist, CHIME FoundationAs we close out the CHIME Foundation’s first quarter, we reflect on the CHIME HIMSS CIO Forum and other activities during the week of HIMSS. The week of the HIMSS conference is a large undertaking for all of us and our team strives to learn and grow from the experience.
Overall, CHIME and CHIME Foundation firm members found our four dynamic keynote speakers’ presentations relevant and meaningful, and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. CHIME takes care to measure and track event satisfaction data from our members, which allows us to aim even higher for future events.
For the 2018 CHIME HIMSS CIO Forum, overall satisfaction scores echoed the positive comments that were received post-event (results include both CHIME CIOs and Foundation members). When asked if during the event “the goal of an interactive and educational discussion provided an opportunity to obtain feedback on challenges in the workplace,” 99 percent of respondents agreed. If you missed any of these well-received sessions, you can refer to the materials and presentations archived here:
https://chimecentral.org/chime-himss-cio-forum-2018/
Focus Groups provide great value for Foundation firms and CIOs alike. Hosting the in-person Focus Groups is a huge part of the CHIME Foundation’s mission at HIMSS. It is important to us that Foundation partners have the tools and support needed to implement Focus Groups that are engaging, dynamic and encourage productive discussion.
A few Focus Group stats include:
- 87 Focus Groups held
- 71 firms hosted Focus Groups
- Number of CIO participants – 168 (with many CIOs participating in more than two groups)
CHIME CIO members agree that the Focus Groups were thought-provoking and encouraged conversation amongst peers. After tabulating evaluations from all CIOs, here is a summary of some valuable feedback:
- 94 percent of respondents scored either Excellent or Good when asked to rate the overall value of their Focus Group
- Respondents reported the following strengths, in order:
- Engaging facilitators (86 percent)
- Attendee participation (82 percent )
- Relevant content (79 percent)
- Effective presentation (56 percent )
- Clear/informative objectives (44 percent )
- 12 percent of respondents felt the objective of the Focus Group was unclear.
Some of the most compelling quotes from CIO participants included:
“Great discussion on challenges that organizations are facing and priorities for the year and coming years.”
“This was very engaging and informative. I was able to get additional perspectives from other IT leaders in the industry.”
“Great topic – – like hearing from peers, what they are doing and challenges they are facing.”
“Useful tools and best practices. Thank you.”
“Great discussion with equal participation. More concept and less sales =>Big Plus!”
“Very effective getting the dialogue going. Patient, thoughtful discussion leader. Thank you.”
Based on the data and comments from our CIOs and Foundation partners alike, the CHIME Foundation team can draw some informative conclusions about what may be needed in the future to support successful Focus Groups. We will be pulling together a Focus Group committee in the next few months, a small team of CHIME CIO and Foundation members who can work together to further explore the current Focus Group process from start to finish, and make recommendations on improvements that will benefit both Foundation members and the experiences of CIO participants.
We want to thank all our Foundation partners for your part in making this year’s 2018 CHIME HIMSS CIO Forum and Focus Groups a resounding success. We welcome any thoughts, comments and suggestions you may have on these events for the future. Please don’t hesitate to email us at [email protected].

CHIME 2017 Annual Report and Letter from the Foundation Board Chair
4.06.18
Letter from the Foundation Board Chair Liz Johnson:
CIOs do not work in a vacuum. To be most effective, we must maintain close ties with our healthcare system’s top executives, clinician leaders and other key staff. We must listen to them, learn what they need, occasionally educate them and provide them with the tools, support and knowledge to meet their goals. When we do our jobs right, everyone benefits – most importantly, the patient.
CHIME Foundation members also play a critical role in our successes as healthcare leaders. They give us the technology support and services we need for our healthcare organizations to function efficiently and effectively. Like us, the best in class listen, learn, educate and deliver. Although they don’t interact directly with patients the way doctors and nurses do, they can still take pride in knowing that they have contributed to that care.
CHIME has created a unique environment that allows those in provider organizations and those in industry to learn and educate each other. In 2017, we introduced the industry’s first certification program: the CHIME Foundation Certified Healthcare Executive (CFCHE), an initiative for industry representatives that mirrors the CHIME Certified Healthcare CIO program. The CHIME Foundation also held its second annual CHIME Partner Education Summit (CPES) in Chicago, an educational event for industry representatives that is taught by CIO faculty. CPES aims to foster stronger partnerships among CHIME members and CHIME Foundation members.
CHIME has always championed education and career development for members and now the CHIME Foundation can offer the same high-quality benefits to Foundation firm members. We feel this is critical for advancing health and healthcare in our communities.
Foundation firms have continued to be very generous to CHIME as well. We thank all of our Foundation firms for their support of CHIME. Without them, CHIME could not offer the networking, professional development and educational programs that members rely on to be leaders in our industry.
The CHIME Foundation is committed to creating a better future for our industry and the patients we serve. What we accomplished in 2017 is just the start.
Liz Johnson

CHIME Launches HealthCare’s Most Wired Survey – How You Can Get Involved
4.06.18
By Jessica Hadley, Executive Director, CHIME Education Foundation & Fundraising
In July 2017, CHIME acquired the HealthCare’s Most Wired program from the American Hospital Association. Under CHIME’s leadership, HealthCare’s Most Wired will continue to serve as a prominent measure of technology excellence in healthcare, honoring health systems for their outstanding healthcare IT programs.
CHIME has retained many of the great attributes of the program while also offering the following:
- An updated survey that better reflects current healthcare IT practices
- New survey categories
- Greater transparency about the survey methodology, analysis and appeals process
- An industry-wide recognition program
- An annual awards event and program to honor organizations that meet the highest healthcare IT standards
The CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired program not only recognizes those organizations that demonstrate excellence in IT implementation and innovation, but also serves as an invaluable tool to aid all participating organizations in planning and developing future IT projects. Participating hospitals and health systems are assessed based on progress in adoption, implementation and use of information technology.
Each year, nearly 700 organizations participate in this survey. Encouraging your customers to participate in the survey is a great way to support the program as well as the healthcare industry as a whole. For more information about CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired program and survey, go here.
Sponsorship opportunities are available at two levels to provide your organization with a variety of options that best align with your marketing strategies:
- Brand recognition associated with award promotion and materials
- Participation in Most Wired recognition programs
- Access to survey information
CHIME is honored to have the opportunity to share this valuable resource with CHIME members and the healthcare IT community. We look forward to honoring Most Wired recipients on Nov. 2 at the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Diego. And we welcome the opportunity to discuss how you can become involved in this prominent industry program. For information contact [email protected]
