Nuance Launches Cloud-Based Dragon Medical One in Canada
Award-winning speech recognition platform hosted in state-of-the-art data center to ensure compliance with Canadian federal and provincial patient privacy regulations
Vancouver, B.C., Canada – May 30, 2018 – At the eHealth Conference booth #235 today, Nuance Communications, Inc. launched its universal cloud-based speech recognition platform, Dragon® Medical One to the Canadian market. Dragon Medical One, brings the power of speech directly to electronic health records (EHRs), enabling physicians to quickly and conveniently capture a patient’s complete story at the point of care. To support the launch and assist with compliance with Canadian federal and provincial patient privacy regulations, Dragon Medical One is hosted in Microsoft Azure, HITRUST CSF certified hosting infrastructures.
Nuance’s deep product integration with leading EHR vendors provides physicians with unified voice-driven clinical documentation to optimize productivity and more fully utilize the EHR’s functionality. The completely cloud-based solution is seamlessly integrated into existing caregiver workflows and eliminates up to one hundred million clicks per day1 through its speech-enabled functionality. Dragon Medical One’s intelligent voice technology enables Canadian healthcare providers to produce documentation up to 45 percent faster and capture up to 20 percent more relevant content2.
“Providers need efficient tools and access to create timely and relevant clinical documentation for their patients. Nuance’s Dragon Medical One will help enable Canadian physicians have up-to-date technology as it fits seamlessly into their workflow and easily integrates with existing EHR technology,” said Sumon Acharjee, Joint CIO for North York General and Michael Garron Hospitals. “Physicians no longer create their documentation within the four walls of our organization. Nuance’s cloud gives clinicians access to the latest versions of Dragon Medical, and a consistent workflow and process regardless of whether they are here, or in their offices, clinics or homes.”
With Dragon Medical One running in Microsoft Azure, clients benefit from a zero-speech server footprint. Nuance can deliver its speech recognition software with responsiveness and performance across devices, including thin client and virtual deployments. Moving heavy processing workloads to Azure, eliminates that burden for clients who can easily run Dragon Medical One with minimal network impact. In addition, Nuance can easily conduct software updates, ensuring clients have and are using Nuance’s latest innovations.
Dragon Medical One is a scalable solution that supports acute and ambulatory IT infrastructures. Using Dragon Medical One, physicians enjoy a consistent experience and workflow regardless of location. This is especially meaningful in today’s fast-paced hospital environment where physicians regularly move between hospitals, clinics, home offices, various EHR systems, and other software applications. Dragon Medical One is typically the one technology that remains consistent throughout their day. The consistency physicians experience with Dragon Medical One saves them time that can be reinvested in patient care.
“Dragon Medical One’s speech recognition is extremely accurate, even with my strong accent,” said Nishtha Kapur, MD, CCFP, a family practice doctor in Scarborough, ON. “Using Dragon Medical One and its integrated productivity tools with our EHR saves me a few hours every day that I can re-dedicate to patient care. Also, I’m able to move freely between seeing patients at the office and having access to the same technology and great experience whether I’m mobile or at home.”
Flexible Solutions Improve Physician Satisfaction and Patient Experience
With documentation workflows increasingly being split between desktop, mobile devices and new tools outside of the EHR, the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Dragon Medical One provides a personalized experience and unprecedented mobility. With cloud-based dictation, clinicians achieve the flexibility to access Nuance’s industry-leading speech recognition regardless of application, device or physical location. The embedded solution offers the same personalized, consistent speech-enabled documentation experience across mobile devices, improving physician satisfaction. By freeing physicians with time to devote to meaningful interactions with patients, patient care will also reap the benefits with advanced patient engagement and accurate accounts of patient heath.“Launching Dragon Medical One in Canada will expand the adoption of speech-enabled workflows and further unburden clinicians,” said Duncan Salt, General Manager of Canada and Vice President of Client Outcomes, Healthcare, Nuance. “By implementing a truly integrated solution, Dragon Medical One will help physicians achieve greater flexibility when documenting care, resulting in improved reporting quality and reduced costs. With less time spent on administrative tasks, physicians can spend more time focused on their first priority – their patients.”

Protenus President to Discuss the Latest Trends and Technologies Transforming Healthcare Privacy and Security
Robert Lord, Protenus President and Co-founder, is featured speaker at the 14th NCHICA Academic Medical Center Privacy and Security Conference in Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Chapel Hill, NC – May 30, 2018 – Healthcare organizations increasingly find their names in the headlines. Unfortunately, it’s not because of their groundbreaking medical research, but due to data breaches that expose the sensitive information of thousands of patients, according to Robert Lord, President and Co-founder of Protenus, a healthcare compliance analytics platform detecting inappropriate activity in electronic health record (EHR) systems. Lord, who is speaking as part of a roundtable discussion at the 14th North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance (NCHICA) AMC Privacy and Security Conference, will cover this topic, as well as the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare compliance, and strategies healthcare organizations can use to get ahead of the data breaches that are affecting healthcare.
In the panel, “New Frontiers in Risk and Opportunity: A New Hope or A Dark Future?” Lord will analyze the latest trends and technologies transforming healthcare privacy and security, and discuss how artificial intelligence can detect privacy violations before they wreak havoc on healthcare organizations and patients alike. Speaking together with Carlos Cruz, the CIO of TriCity Medical Center and Michael Gregory, the CIO of Community Healthcare System, Lord will focus on new threats that are emerging from increasingly interconnected health data systems, as well as new technologies that replace reactive, manual processes, and allow health systems to proactively audit every access to health data, reducing the overall risk involved in data sharing.
“On any given day, there are millions of accesses to patient data within a single hospital’s EHR. Healthcare organizations simply don’t have the resources to review all those accesses, but technology now exists that uses artificial intelligence to alert hospitals when there is a potential breach,” said Lord. “My hope is that by highlighting opportunities for improvement in how we protect patient data, the healthcare industry can begin to implement solutions, and build trust with all the patients we serve.”
Current detection tools reactively respond to suspected breaches to patient data by relying on manual, labor-intensive audits. These tools lack the clinical context and user behavior analytics necessary to audit every access or proactively identify data breaches, especially when at least 41% of all health data breaches are attributable to healthcare organization insiders. NCHICA was created to improve the delivery, quality, accessibility, and efficiency of healthcare through the use of information technology. This community provides a neutral and engaging environment where members can gather to discuss common concerns in healthcare privacy and security.
To register or learn more about the roundtable discussion, visit the NCHICA AMC website.

South Okanagan General Hospital Strengthens the Best Possible Medication Histories Using DrFirst’s Patient Medication History Service with PharmaNet Data in MEDITECH EHR
Hospital is first of 22 British Columbia facilities to add DrFirst’s MedHx to populate MEDITECH with PharmaNet medication histories
Rockville, MD – May 25, 2018 – DrFirst Healthcare Innovations, Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of DrFirst, a leading provider of patient medication management solutions, announced that South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver, British Columbia, has deployed MedHx, DrFirst’s electronic patient medication history service, integrated within the hospital’s MEDITECH Enterprise Health Record (EHR). MedHx allows physicians, nurses, and pharmacists to electronically retrieve patient medication histories from PharmaNet, British Columbia’s province-wide prescription network, and download the information directly into MEDITECH, creating more complete medication histories for enhanced patient safety and streamlined workflows.
South Okanagan is part of British Columbia’s Interior Health Authority, which has contracted with DrFirst to integrate MedHx with MEDITECH at 22 different hospitals. By integrating the PharmaNet drug information system and the MEDITECH EHR, MedHx delivers to clinicians the most comprehensive patient prescription and allergy histories available directly within the clinical workflow.
MedHx incorporates DrFirst’s SmartSuite functionality (SmartSig℠, SmartAllergy℠, and SmartDx℠) to intelligently analyze and translate free-text prescription information to further improve the quality of the data and the workflow associated with the medication reconciliation process. Drug data is validated and normalized using DrFirst technology, then sent to the MEDITECH EHR to automatically populate patient histories. With point-of-care access to vital drug dispensing details, physicians have more robust data available to them to drive well-informed prescribing decisions.
“The DrFirst and MEDITECH collaboration facilitates the delivery of safer, more timely care for patients,” said Hoda Sayed-Friel, executive vice president, MEDITECH. “Through this integration, clinicians have a more comprehensive summary of the patient’s medication information. The PharmaNet medication and allergy data is instantly available within existing clinical workflows, enabling physicians to more quickly and efficiently gather a holistic view of reconciled medication information.”
MedHx reduces the time needed to manually research a patient’s medication history by as much as 62 percent. As patients are admitted to the hospital, MedHx electronically retrieves patient medication histories from PharmaNet and feeds the data to MEDITECH. Since launching MedHx, South Okanagan clinicians query the medication profiles for 100 percent of patients entering the hospital, eliminating the need for time-consuming data entry and reconciliation, while simultaneously creating a more accurate medical record.
“By implementing the integrated MedHx and MEDITECH solution, Interior Health has demonstrated its commitment to reducing the risk of adverse drug events and improving quality care delivery,” said G. Cameron Deemer, president of DrFirst. “We look forward to working with the other hospitals in the province to replicate South Okanagan’s success and make vital medication histories easily accessible to clinicians. Both physicians and patients will benefit from more efficient workflows and more complete patient records.”
Through the end of the year, Interior Health will integrate MedHx with existing MEDITECH EHRs at Royal Inland Hospital, Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Kelowna General Hospital, and Penticton Regional Hospital. The balance of the hospitals will be implemented thereafter.

Quest Diagnostics Fosters Interoperability as Blockchain Comes to Healthcare
Mason, OH – May 25, 2018 – There’s been a lot of hype surrounding blockchain technology. It’s being applied to many industries, from finance to healthcare. But blockchain isn’t merely the latest hot topic. People are taking it seriously. And it’s predicted that it can play a role in the future of healthcare IT.
Blockchain has become immensely useful when loosely coupled organizations want to confidently share and audit information while automating mutually beneficial processes.
Recently, Quest Diagnostics announced it was joining other healthcare organizations, including Humana, MultiPlan, United Health Group’s Optum, and United Healthcare, in launching a pilot program to apply blockchain technology to improve data quality and reduce administrative costs associated with changes to healthcare provider demographic data: a critical, complex, and difficult issue facing organizations across the healthcare system.
Many managed care organizations, health systems, physicians, diagnostic information service providers, and other health care stakeholders typically maintain separate copies of healthcare provider data. This can result in time-intensive and expensive reconciliation processes when differences arise. The pilot program aims to examine how sharing data across healthcare organizations using blockchain can improve data accuracy, streamline administration, and improve access to care.
But that’s only one application, and we’re just getting started. There are many more ways of applying blockchain in this industry. Join Quest Diagnostics on June 12, 2018 at 2:00 PM ET for the webinar, Blockchain in healthcare: Why it matters, as Quest CIO Lidia Fonseca explores this topic further.

New Kroll CyberDetectER® : Solutions to Preempt Data Loss, Enhance Endpoint Security, and Monitor Dark Web Threats
CyberDetectER® solutions deliver the combined power of Kroll’s global cyber expertise, exclusive partnerships with industry leaders, and ground-breaking technology
New York, NY – May 24, 2018 – Kroll (“the Company”), a global leader in risk mitigation, investigations, compliance, cyber resilience, security, and incident response solutions, announces the launch of its CyberDetectER® product suite. CyberDetectER gives organizations an unprecedented continuum of solutions to proactively monitor, detect, and respond to data threats on endpoints, across the surface web, and throughout the deep and dark web.
“Kroll’s CyberDetectER® solutions help organizations overcome one of their most complex yet most vital challenges: rapidly detecting and effectively responding to cyber incidents and data leaks to prevent or minimize harm to individuals as well as operational, financial, or reputational harm to the organization,” said Jason Smolanoff, Senior Managing Director, Global Practice Leader, Cyber Security and Investigations. “Just as there are human and technology facets to virtually every data loss, CyberDetectER® solutions integrate the deep knowledge and investigative expertise of Kroll’s cyber professionals in tandem with today’s most sophisticated methodologies and proprietary patented technology.”
“We drew on Kroll’s decades of experience helping organizations and consumers manage the impact of data breaches as we built and as we continue to refine CyberDetectER® products,” said Brian Lapidus, Leader of Kroll’s Identity Theft and Breach Notification practice. “The patent-protected technology and innovations embedded in CyberDetectER® are unmatched for their power and scale. Additionally, we are continually refining our sources of information by leveraging the experience of our cyber intelligence professionals working around the world. All these resources and expertise combine to give CyberDetectER® its formidable power for isolating credible threats across endpoints and the surface, deep, and dark web.”
Kroll’s CyberDetectER® intelligence and monitoring solutions currently include:
- CyberDetectER®Endpoint Powered by Red Canary: The 24×7 monitoring and analysis of endpoints activity provided by CyberDetectER® Endpoint is enhanced with the algorithm- and analyst-driven threat hunting and detection services of Kroll’s strategic partner, Red Canary. The solution helps users expand their detection capabilities and free up internal information security resources consumed with endpoint detection and response. Alerts are also made available to Kroll experts, who can further investigate and assist with identified threats.
- CyberDetectER®DarkWeb: Estimated to be 500 times larger than the surface web and to comprise over 90% of the internet, the deep and dark webs are vast areas that surface search engines cannot index. Using proprietary technology and unparalleled data resources, Kroll continuously monitors the deep and dark web for data exposures based on a client’s Dynamic Signature Profile (DSP), a customized set of key terms.
- CyberDetectER®SurfaceWeb: Kroll’s advanced tools and processes monitor and analyze threats across a wide range of publicly accessible information, including numerous online platforms such social media, blogs, news outlet comment boards and message boards.
- CyberDetectER®BINWatch: This specialized solution monitors the dark web for payment cards associated with specific bank identification numbers (BINs) or issuer identification numbers (IINs). Kroll can rapidly alert client financial institutions of detected compromised card data, helping to prevent or reduce fraud losses.

CHIME Welcomes Ed Czopek as CFO and Tim Stettheimer as VP of Education
5.24.2018
Cletis Earle – Chair, CHIME Board; CIO. Kaleida HealthCHIME welcomed a new face and an old friend on Monday with the addition of Ed Czopek and Tim Stettheimer to CHIME’s executive team. Ed is CHIME’s first chief financial officer and Tim is leading our educational programs as a vice president.
Imagine being the CFO for an organization that represents CFOs? Ed did exactly that as executive vice president and CFO at the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), a nonprofit association that serves more than 38,000 healthcare finance leaders. Before that, Ed was an associate executive director with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Ed’s experience working with both the administrative and clinical communities makes him an ideal CFO for CHIME.
Tim has been an inspiration for many of us at CHIME. As a regional CIO for Ascension, he oversaw IT initiatives for the 55 acute care hospitals in the South and Central region of Ascension and also supported Ascension’s Ambulatory Care Organization, the Senior Living Division teams and numerous other programs. Yet he still found time for CHIME and our members. During his 13-year tenure as regional CIO, he served as CHIME Board Chair (2010), CHIME Foundation Board Chair (2011) and the CHIME Education Foundation Board Chair (2013-2014). He also has been a Healthcare CIO Boot Camp faculty member for more than a dozen years and is a frequent luminary at Leadership Academies.
Both Ed and Tim bring a wealth of wisdom to CHIME. Ed is a champion of financial transparency in organizations and helping everyone understand the financial ramifications of their decisions. At HFMA, he was part of the teams that implemented a balanced score card that helped to increase operational effectiveness and profitability, eliminate the use of investment income to fund normal operations, and improve employee satisfaction. He is also a tech-forward thinker who supports innovation. For instance, he played a key role at HFMA in the development and sale of a Software as a Service product to benchmark revenue cycle performance, and helped develop and initiate an insurance program for oral surgeons that quickly became the profession’s top liability insurance provider. Ed believes his greatest accomplishment has been the relationships he has built with volunteers and staff over the years.
Tim exemplifies CHIME’s vision of senior healthcare IT professionals who transform healthcare by leading their staff and executive teams to success. Tim contributed as a Mission and Leadership Executive for Ascension Information Services and led several projects to improve the patient experience, save costs and facilitate innovation. As anyone who has witnessed Tim in his faculty role knows, he is a dynamic presenter who challenges his audience to think strategically, build a strong and supportive team, and take charge. Tim also is active in CHIME’s international leadership programs.
You can read more about Ed and Tim here.
Please join me in congratulating them as they enter this new phase in their careers. We are thrilled to have them come on board.
