CHIME Foundation Looks to a Strong Second Half of 2018
6.12.2018
By Barb Sivek, Vice President, CHIME FoundationBack in January we outlined our vision for 2018. Now in June, CHIME Foundation is making great strides toward achieving the objectives laid out for us in 2018. We will wrap up the first half of this year with several exciting programs that you won’t want to miss. Here is a look at what we have accomplished this year and upcoming opportunities.
We opened registration for the CHIME Partner Education Summit (CPES), which will be held Sept 5-7 at Loews Chicago O’Hare Hotel. This is our third CPES, and we have a dynamite lineup that includes new faculty members in addition to a few CIOs who participated last year. Frank Nydam, the CPES Planning Committee chair, offers more details in his article in this month’s in this issue of Insight. Frank and I will be there, and we hope to see you there, too.
The CHIME Foundation Certified Healthcare Executive (CFCHE) program is approaching its one-year anniversary (June 23) and has garnered interest, attention, and 29 designees during its inaugural year. CFCHE is your opportunity as a CHIME Foundation representative to distinguish yourself and showcase your professional commitment, credibility and comprehensive understanding of the healthcare IT environment.
In 2018 we are working to continue highlighting the many similarities that CFCHE shares with CHCIO, our industry certification for CIOs. CHCIO has grown to be an industry standard over the last 8-plus years. Like CHCIO, CFCHE recognizes those who understand the various responsibilities and strategic vision of a healthcare leader. With the support of our growing contingent of CFCHE holders, we will continue building awareness of the CFCHE certification in the industry. Join your peers as a fellow CFCHE, and start building more influential collaborative partnerships with CHIME members.
Also on the agenda this year is the CHIME Advocacy Summit on Oct. 3-5 in Washington, D.C. This is a new educational program that is open to CHIME Foundation firm representatives, CHIME members, members of CHIME’s affiliated associations and others. Speakers will include Washington, D.C., policy leaders, CHIME and CHIME affiliated association members. Liz Johnson, our Foundation Board chair and chair of CHIME’s Public Policy Steering Committee, shares more about our inaugural summit in this issue. If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities for this inaugural event – we would welcome your participation.
2018 is a milestone year for CHIME Foundation; it’s our 25th anniversary! CHIME has already begun executing plans to highlight this exciting occasion in a variety of ways, leading up to a big celebration at CHIME18 Fall CIO Forum in San Diego this October and early November. Whether you have been a Foundation member since the beginning, or whether you have just joined us recently, we are taking time to celebrate you, our valued members, who help make the Foundation such a robust part of the CHIME mission.
CHIME and CHIME Foundation have continued our trend of organizational growth over the last 3-plus years. In addition to bringing on a new events associate to support signature events like Fall CIO Forum, Healthcare CIO Boot Camp™, the CHIME Foundation has also added a new team member: Caitlin Kelly, director of Strategic Partnerships. Caitlin’s role is to help support your firm’s strategic priorities throughout the year and to connect you with the different ways you might engage with CHIME members outside of your normal benefits. Examples include a research topic you may want to pursue with our members through implementing multiple online surveys or increased, in-person engagement with provider members. The Partnership Plus program is designed to meet your specific marketing needs and help you achieve your strategic goals. If you’d like to learn more about this program, Caitlin will be happy to meet with you.
As we begin the second half of 2018, the CHIME Foundation is even better positioned to support your team in increased exposure, connection and valuable interaction with our CHIME provider members. It’s an exciting time to be involved with CHIME Foundation, and we’re thankful for your continued partnership.

CHIME Foundation 25th Anniversary Profiles – 3M HIS
6.12.18
By Arika Lycan, Specialist, CHIME FoundationCHIME Foundation’s 25th anniversary celebration is coming up at the end of October, at our signature event, the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum. As a retrospective on the past 25 years of supporting healthcare IT firms of all sizes, we’re featuring articles with insights and voices from one of our long-term members in each month’s Insight.
This piece is one of several in our series on Founding Firms: Celebrating 25 Years of Robust Partnership. CHIME Foundation’s inaugural year ended with just 15 Foundation firms, at least six of which are still active members today.
Our featured partner firm this month is 3M HIS, with input from Ann Chenoweth, senior director of industry relations, 3M Health Information Systems. She’s been with 3M since 2001.
Q: What are your earliest memories of CHIME and CHIME Foundation?
A: Our earliest memories are of an association which provided a terrific forum for CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders. The education was of high value and the forums provided members and foundation firms a wonderful opportunity to network, learn from industry peers, and exchange best practice ideas.
Q: Do you know why 3M HIS decided to join the then-newly formed CHIME Foundation?
A: 3M HIS strongly believed in CHIME’s mission to advance the role of the CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders through education, collaboration and advocacy in support of improved health and healthcare in our communities. 3M wanted to lend our support to CHIME’s mission and the members it served.
Q: How has 3M HIS’ healthcare-focused work grown and transformed in the past 25 years?
A: Since 1994, 3M HIS has grown from a company that focused primarily on coding and payment methodologies to performance measurement and management solutions, analysis and strategic services that help our clients move from volume to value-based care. 3M’s software focuses on innovative computer-assisted coding, clinical documentation improvement, performance monitoring, quality outcomes reporting and terminology management. Today, approximately 80 percent of hospitals in the U.S. utilize solutions developed by 3M HIS. Our footprint also continues to expand into the payer and U.S. markets.
Q: In what ways has CHIME Foundation been able to support those changing needs?
A: Over the years, we have seen CHIME’s strategy continue to evolve to support CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders globally to navigate the ever-changing healthcare landscape through expanded education, advocacy and certifications. 3M is honored to be one of the founding Foundation firms.
CHIME has been a tremendous value to 3M HIS. CHIME has supported us in building and deepening relationships with CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders. It has provided us with the opportunity to both share 3M expertise and learn from others through focus groups, sponsorships, committee memberships, surveys, forums and college-live education.
Thanks for your thoughts on the CHIME Foundation and 3M HIS’ significant partnership. Next month we will profile another long-term member. Stayed tuned for more information as we move closer to our big anniversary celebration at CHIME18!

Foundation Firm Members Can Gain Policy Insights at D.C. Summit
6.07.2018
By Liz Johnson – MS, FAAN, FCHIME, FHIMSS, CHCIO, RN-BC, Chief Information Officer, Acute Hospitals and Applied Clinical Informatics, Tenet HealthcareEducation is a pillar of CHIME, and we have never lost sight of our mission to help members learn and grow in their careers. In recent years, we added educational events specifically for Foundation firm members to enrich them professionally as well. This year we are introducing a new program that brings everyone together to create positive change in healthcare through IT – with no limits on the number of industry representatives who can attend.
CHIME is launching a new initiative, the CHIME Advocacy Summit, on Oct. 3-5 in Washington, D.C. The summit is open to CHIME members, members of CHIME’s affiliated associations, CHIME Foundation firm representatives and others. The program will be illuminating for anyone who wants the most up-to-date information on federal policy and its impact on providers, health systems and the businesses that serve them. As chair of CHIME’s Public Policy Steering Committee as well as your board chair, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that we stay in front of these issues and make our voices heard in Washington.
The CHIME Advocacy Summit coincides with the kickoff of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and comes right before National Healthcare IT Week. The summit will highlight four of CHIME’s top policy priority topics for 2018: cybersecurity, interoperability, telehealth and opioid-related issues. We are still locking in the details, but we expect to feature high-profile leaders from the federal government and agencies along with thought leaders from CHIME, the Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Security (AEHIS), the Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Technology (AEHIT) and the Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Applications (AEHIA).
We are planning several networking opportunities to give attendees a chance to share ideas and build relationships. We have reserved a block of hotel rooms at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, which is also the site for the summit. You can register here. The location is only five miles from Reagan Airport for those flying in and three blocks from Union Station for train travelers and commuters. And it is a short walk to the U.S. Capitol and the Senate Office Buildings. The summit is tentatively scheduled to adjourn before 11 a.m. on Oct. 5, giving attendees time to visit Capitol Hill if they want.
This is not just a public policy conference, though. This is an event that will educate and energize all who attend to take the lead – which is why we gave it the tagline “Transforming HIT through Policy Leadership.”
We will provide updates soon. In the meantime, please mark your calendars for Oct. 3-5. If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities, contact Foundation Vice President Barb Sivek at [email protected].

CHIME Partner Education Summit (CPES) Brings Unique Value to Your Organization
6.12.18
By Frank Nydam, healthcare vice president and chief technology officer at VMware, CHIME and CHIMe Foundation Board member and CPES Committee Chair
Like many relatively new programs, each year CHIME Partner Education Summit (CPES) has evolved. The thing that sets CPES apart from other industry events is that ours is an event for you, planned by your peers. The CPES Planning Committee has further refined our messaging and defined our aims for the event, working to ensure that each year’s program aligns with your needs in the healthcare IT space.
The positive response on from both years has affirmed our commitment to hosting this event and providing relevant continuing education opportunities for our CHIME Foundation members. CPES18’s agenda was directly influenced by feedback from previous year’s attendees, as well as program evaluations. The thoughts shared tell us that CPES topics and content are relevant, timely, and help give your teams the tools you need to build and enhance CIO relationships.
As we head into CHIME Partner Education Summit (CPES)’s 3rd year, CPES18 promises our members the tools they need to engage with clients in a more nuanced, informed way, with cutting-edge data on a variety of topics. For those of you attending for the time, you’ll be pleased to see that the program covers a lot of ground in our 3 days together. We’ll begin in the later afternoon on Wednesday, September 5 with words from Liz Johnson, CHIME Foundation’s Board Chair, after which CHIME’s own CEO/President, Russ Branzell. Russ will paint a picture of the current HIT landscape, the winds of change on the horizon, and how to optimize your position to respond. We’ll have a meaty first session that evening to set the tone for the days to come; “Creating a Trust Relationship”, co-presented by a CHIME CIO and a CHIME Foundation representative. We’ll end the evening with dinner and drinks together.
Thursday is a full day of learning, packed with information that’s sure to hit home for you and your teams. Topics include “Cybersecurity Preparedness”, “Cooperating to Advance a Mutual Interest”, “Perspectives from the C-Suite” and “Data-informed Ways to Improve & Build Relationships”. Thursday’s agenda features two opportunities for breakout sessions, with topics of interest for all; AM sessions include “International Partnerships”, “Conducting an Engaging Partner Conversation” and “Why CFCHE? Learn More About Certification”. After lunch and a dynamic presentation on “Washington and Beyond” the afternoon features our second chance for breakouts with, “Identifying Key Service Gaps: Opportunities for Consulting Firm” and both a beginner and an advanced version of “Understanding the Provider Buying Process”. Following our education on Thursday evening will be a fun reception, with local Chicago CIOs in attendance.
Friday morning we’ll finish our time together with breakfast and two highly anticipated sessions, “Lessons Learned: Perspectives from CIOs & Foundation Firms”, and “Envisioning the Future; Forecasting Provider Needs”. The program will close in the early afternoon, and those who are interested in pursuing professional certification can take the CFCHE exam right on-site, from 12pm-2:30pm ET
For the full CPES schedule with dates and details, refer to the to the CPES event page here. VMware looks forward to seeing our fellow CHIME Foundation peers in attendance at CPES18, and learning best practices, new tools, and engaging in productive dialogue about our shared field.

Telmediq Mobility Strategy Simplifies Device Sharing for Nurses
Telmediq NFC Tap Simplifies Login and Task Management on Hospital-Owned Devices
Seattle, WA. – June 11, 2018 – Telmediq, the #1 KLAS rated vendor for secure communication platforms in healthcare, today unveils near-field technology (NFC) technology for simplified user access and task management for shared devices. Telmediq’s nurse mobility strategy supports shared hospital-owned devices, giving nurses the ability to “badge in”, effectively log-off shift and automates non-clinical tasks.
“There is no question that providing nurses with smartphones improves patient outcomes, but many hospitals have questions about the logistics in deploying hospital-owned devices,” notes Ben Moore, CEO and Founder of Telmediq.
Telmediq’s mobile device authentication protocol leverages NFC for shift workers like nurses to provide tap-based secure access to hospital-owned mobile devices and automatic login to the Telmediq platform. Users can leverage their existing corporate key / single sign on (SSO) badges to tap into a shared device and the system supports controlled log out at the end of a shift.
“Our adoption of Telmediq has been user driven. Our people really like the system. When we first purchased it, we only rolled it out to a few departments. Soon, our other departments were begging to use the product. Adoption has not been a problem for us; Telmediq makes our clinical communications so much better. Our adoption rates are high among both our physicians and our nurses.” – CIO*
For task management, Telmediq uses patented technology to automated non-clinical tasks. For example, by tapping a smartphone to a “smart tag” on a supply box, an automated message requests the supplies to be restocked. A room cleaning or transport request can be automated in a similar fashion.
Telmediq’s clinical communications and collaboration platform integrates with over 20 clinical IT systems to better manage alarms, alerts, care coordination and to ensure nurses get real time lab results and order notifications. Empowering nurses with the right tools to effectively communicate provides them more time with patients.
Ben Moore states, “We have deployed Telmediq to nurses at many large hospitals and healthcare systems and have gained a deep understanding of nursing requirements. We can help leadership teams develop a nurse mobility strategy that solves critical questions around deployment, shared devices, user access controls, security and sanitation.”
About Telmediq
Telmediq is a leader in healthcare communications solutions for large hospital systems, acute-care and ambulatory facilities. Telmediq provides a unified clinical communication platform that integrates more than 20 clinical systems (EHR, scheduling, lab, nurse call) and helps match technology with the way people work. Telmediq provides an integration and consolidation roadmap to reduce software and support costs, improve workflows and provide a single source for analytics, auditing and reporting. Our clients reduce patient wait times, improve patient handover times and improve physicians’ work environment. www.telmediq.com* Selected commentary collected about Telmediq Secure Communications by KLAS December 2017, visit klasresearch.com for a complete view

CHIME Advocacy Summit Positions Members to Drive Change
6.07.2018
Liz Johnson – MS, FAAN, FCHIME, FHIMSS, CHCIO, RN-BC, CHIME Public Policy Steering Committee Chair, Chief Information Officer, Acute Hospitals and Applied Clinical Informatics, Tenet HealthcareIf there is one certainty in Washington today it is that legislative and regulatory change to healthcare will happen, and when it does, it will have an impact on what we do and how we do it. CHIME isn’t passively waiting for new marching orders, though. We are using our expertise to help guide decision makers to choose options that support our healthcare organizations and our patients.
Traditionally, those campaigns have been carried out by the CHIME Public Policy Steering Committee and our policy team in D.C. This year we are giving you an opportunity to help lead the charge for positive change, too.
This October, CHIME will hold its first-ever educational program dedicated to public policy and our roles as healthcare IT leaders. The CHIME Advocacy Summit, scheduled for Oct 3-5 in Washington, D.C., will offer the same high-quality sessions and networking opportunities as our forums, but over a shorter timeframe and to a wider audience. The program reflects several of the public policy priority topics that CHIME members named in a recent survey: cybersecurity, interoperability, telemedicine and opioid issues.
Speakers will include members of the Policy Steering Committee, leaders in CHIME’s three affiliate associations and top officials in Washington, D.C. The sessions are designed to give participants the knowledge and tools to make a difference at the local, state and federal levels of government.
Although the program details are still being finalized, we expect to highlight many issues that challenge us as CIOs and senior healthcare IT executives. We know that the changes being proposed to Meaningful Use – recently renamed as Promoting Interoperability under the Inpatient Prospective Payment System draft rule – weigh heavily on many members’ minds. The rule is expected to be finalized in August and we plan to provide an in-depth review of what that will mean for you and your hospitals. We also will explore ways to resolve seemingly conflicting policy priorities, including an increasing emphasis on patient access to data at a time of heightened cyber threats, and aligning disclosure and privacy needs to combat the opioid epidemic.
The CHIME Advocacy Summit will be open to members of CHIME, the Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Security (AEHIS), the Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Technology (AEHIT), the Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Applications (AEHIA), CHIME Foundation firms and the associations’ Foundation firms. We also will encourage government staff to attend as well as others not associated with CHIME or our affiliate groups.
CHIME has reserved a block of hotel rooms at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, which is also the site for the summit. You can register here. The location is three blocks from Union Station, near Congressional and the Senate offices and convenient for air travelers using Reagan Airport. We have left ample time on the last day for you to schedule visits to the Hill as well.
We will provide more details as they become available. In the meantime, please consider joining us or sending your government relations team to hear from healthcare IT policy thought leaders and network with peers.

DrFirst helps clinicians personalize treatment plans through genomics testing
Now Clinicians can order genomic tests through DrFirst’s Rcopia e-prescribing tool to learn how patients’ genes will impact medication effectiveness for optimal treatment results.
Rockville, MD – June 6, 2018 – DrFirst, a nationally ranked provider of medication management and secure communications solutions, has added a new pharmacogenomics (PGx) capability within the workflow of its Rcopia electronic prescribing suite. The new PGx solution, developed in collaboration with Translational Software Inc. (TSI) and in conjunction with Exceltox and Alpha Genomix Laboratories, allows physicians to order genomic tests for patients to understand how patients will respond to current or planned medications.
DrFirst’s PGx functionality enables true precision medicine by allowing a physician to test how a patient’s genes will affect the efficacy of a drug. If a genomics test shows that a patient metabolizes a drug differently than expected or that the drug may pose a health risk to that person, the physician can make an informed decision as to which medication and/or dosage to prescribe for that patient.
“The results of the genomic tests available through DrFirst are very useful and offer additional information to help me prescribe the best medications to help my patients,” said Dr. Jess Calohan, DNP, PMHNP-BC, a Virginia-based behavioral health nurse practitioner and founder of ClinicWorksConsulting, LLC, which specializes in telehealth. “For instance, one of my patients had been on several different psychiatric drugs but was not seeing noticeable results. Some providers initially thought the patient was not adhering to the medications. But after I ordered the genomic test, the results showed this patient was a rapid metabolizer and couldn’t absorb the drugs previously prescribed appropriately. I prescribed a medication from a different class, and the patient’s symptoms improved dramatically.”
The PGx functionality is a feature of Rcopia’s Patient Advisor medication adherence module. If a patient consents to have a subset of their genes tested, the physician can order a genomics assay within the prescribing workflow. Orders are processed at either Exceltox or Alpha Genomix Laboratories. Currently, pharmacogenomics tests are targeted to behavioral health, cardiology and pain management.
The clinician can place the order for the test and either complete the test in the office or have a test kit mailed to the patient’s home. The test itself is a swab of the inside of the cheek which is sent to a lab for analysis. Results are returned to Rcopia, the electronic health record (EHR) and can also be mailed to the patient. These test results are relevant for the lifetime of the patient and can be forwarded to other providers.
“The integration of pharmacogenomics testing and related clinical decision support into our Rcopia product marks a big step forward for prescribers’ ability to match medications to the genetic makeup of their patients,” said G. Cameron Deemer, president of DrFirst. “For the first time, genomic testing related to a significant number of medications is available in the prescribing workflow. As physicians discover how this can increase the effectiveness of their prescriptions and the adherence of patients to their medications, we believe that the majority of Rcopia users will benefit from genomic information.”
TSI’s proprietary knowledge platform and application programming interface (API) provide genotyping prompts, genomic decision support and critical alerts about drug efficacy, toxicity, and known interactions within the Rcopia e-prescribing workflow. The PGx testing feature is already available in all EHRs that embed Rcopia for e-prescribing. It can be selectively enabled for a practice or even for individual physicians within that practice. There is no additional cost to the provider for using the PGx solution, however, the cost of the test to the patient is dependent upon specific health plan benefits. The genomic tests can be covered by Medicare, Medicaid and many commercial insurers.

Previous CFO of IBM Security Systems Joins Protenus Team
Brian Holtmeier joined as Chief Financial Officer as Protenus sees growing market demand and accelerated sales
Baltimore, MD – June 6, 2018 – (Newswire.com) – Protenus, a healthcare compliance analytics platform that monitors activity within electronic health records, today announced the addition of Brian Holtmeier as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Protenus, Brian spent 15 years in financial and accounting roles for IBM, recently as the CFO of IBM Security Systems, CFO of the IBM-acquired SaaS marketing automation company SilverPop, and Assistant Controller for IBM North America.
Protenus uses AI-powered analytics to identify anomalous behaviors within a hospital’s electronic health records and associated systems. In January, the company announced a $11M Series B funding round, led by Kaiser Permanente Ventures and F-Prime Capital Partners.
“We’re very excited to add Brian’s strategic vision to the leadership team at Protenus,” said Nick Culbertson, Protenus Co-founder and CEO. “Brian brings valuable finance experience, including his past work as a key partner in security and technology business acquisitions by IBM. His expertise will be critical to Protenus as our customer base continues to rapidly grow.”
“The Protenus platform offers health systems an innovative way to keep their patient data safe and manage organizational risk,” Brian said. “I’m excited to join a team working to tackle critical challenges in healthcare that prevent the efficient, safe, and effective delivery of patient care. I couldn’t be more excited about the future of Protenus.”
While serving as the Assistant Controller for IBM North America, Brian collaborated with seven markets and multiple brands across the U.S. and Canada to maximize and forecast revenue, while managing profit and ensuring proper controls posture. He also served as CFO for IBM SilverPop, managing all aspects of finance while guiding the company through the transition of business to IBM. His leadership tenure with IBM also included financial roles with IBM Security Systems and IBM Software Group.
Brian holds an MBA from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Clemson University. He served as a finance manager champion, management potential assessor, and women in finance advisor while at IBM. Brian has also spent time volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.
