Keynote from Sanjay Gupta, Most Wired Awards to Close Out CHIME18
8.16.2018
Summer O’Neill – Director, EducationThe CHIME Fall CIO Forum will end with a bang this year, with CNN’s award-winning medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta. M.D., providing the closing keynote followed by CHIME’s first HealthCare’s Most Wired awards presentation.
Gupta will talk about how he balances his two careers: medicine and media. Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon, regularly reports on natural disasters and humanitarian crises around the world. He has also covered a wide range of health topics – including disease outbreaks, the opioid crisis and medical marijuana – since joining CNN in 2001.
He will be the last in a line of marquee names who will give keynote addresses at CHIME18.
Daniel H. Pink, CHIME18’s opening keynote speaker on Oct. 31, is the author of six provocative books on work, business and behavior, including New York Times bestsellers When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, A Whole New Mind, Drive and To Sell Is Human. His books have won multiple awards and have been translated into 37 languages. Pink was host and co-executive producer of “Crowd Control,” a National Geographic Television series on behavioral science. He also appears frequently on NPR’s “Hidden Brain,” the PBS NewsHour, and other TV and radio networks in the U.S. and abroad.
Five-time Emmy Award-winning journalist Emily Chang will provide the second keynote on Nov. 1. She is executive producer and anchor of “Bloomberg Technology,” a live daily show about technology, innovation and the future of business, and host of the interview series, “Studio 1.0.” Business Insider called her “the star Bloomberg anchor that everyone in tech needs to know” and she was ranked No. 6 in the “influence Index” of top journalists followed by major CEOs on Twitter. Her 2018 expose, Brotopia: Breaking Up the Boys’ Club in Silicon Valley, became an instant national bestseller. Currently, she sits on the board of BUILD, a national nonprofit organization that uses entrepreneurship to excite and propel disengaged, low-income students through high school to college success.
The forum will include two sunrise sessions – results from the Most Wired Trends Report and a public policy session with a guest speaker from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services – and 16 track sessions presented by CHIME members and CHIME Foundation firm members on topics to that reflect the challenges that CIOs face and strategies to triumph against them. Leadership from the Edge, a program that highlights three innovative and out-of-the-box presentations, will return for its second year. CHIME18 will also feature special events through the Women of CHIME initiative.
Besides the educational programs, CHIME has scheduled a golf outing, a public service opportunity, a welcome reception aboard the USS Midway, networking opportunities, galas in honor of the CHIME Foundation’s 25th anniversary and focus groups. The forum will wrap up on Nov. 2 when CHIME reveals the winners of CHIME’s first HealthCare’s Most Wired awards during a special presentation.

Vocera Report is a Call to Action to Engage Patients Differently in the Future of Caring
Study reveals need for human-centered design in an era of healthcare consumerism
San Jose, CA – August 15, 2018 – Vocera Communications, Inc. (NYSE:VCRA), a recognized leader in clinical communication and workflow solutions, today announced the company’s thought leadership and research collaborative, the Experience Innovation Network, has released the findings of its latest study. The research report, Co-Architecting Healthcare Transformation: How Leading Health Systems Put Patients and Families at the Forefront of Design, examines how healthcare organizations engage patients and their families as leaders in innovation design for the future of caring.
As healthcare enters a new era of consumerism, more hospitals and health systems are embracing principles of human-centered care and partnering in unique ways with patients and families to identify areas for improvement. Though most health systems receive patient feedback in the form of surveys and advisory councils, an elite few engage patients and families as true co-architects and leaders of transformation.
Only one in five research participants reported their health system always includes patients-families as partners in strategic improvement decisions. Budgets may impact these partnerships because 25% of health system respondents reported they have no money allocated to engage patients and families in improvement initiatives. Organizational infrastructure may also influence levels of engagement. Among the patients and family members surveyed for this study, 15% said they have served on a healthcare organization’s board of directors or board committee.
“Patients and families are instrumental in shaping a sustainable future for health systems to thrive in an increasingly competitive environment,” said Liz Boehm, research director for Vocera. “These important stakeholders must be deeply engaged as co-architects to shape all aspects of care redesign because they bring a unique and valuable perspective on what is needed to transform and accelerate healthcare to the next level.”
The Vocera research reveals many variations in how clinics, hospitals and health systems integrate patient and family voice, influence and advocacy into transformation efforts. More than 150 health system leaders, patients and family members in the U.S. and Canada participated in a survey or in-depth interview, sharing their experiences with advisory councils and other engagement programs. Boehm will outline key findings from the study during a complimentary webinar from 1-2 p.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 16. She will be joined by experience leaders and patient partners from Providence Health, who are working together to push the envelope to make lasting change.
“Many health systems often bring patients and families into the transformation process too late or simply to ‘check the box’ on patient engagement,” said Bridget Duffy, MD, chief medical officer of Vocera. “To build a humanized health system of the future, industry leaders need to flip the traditional process on its head, and engage patients and families as partners to co-lead all innovation design. This report is a call to action to engage patients more effectively in that process.”

Gauging CIOs’ Opinions with Online Member Surveys
8.14.2018
By Arika Lycan, CHIME Foundation SpecialistSurveys are a useful resource for organizations looking for feedback and data on various HIT-related topics or interests. CHIME Foundation members have the valuable opportunity to implement CIO Member Surveys through CHIME. Standard and Premier tier members have a survey opportunity included in their benefits packages; Associate and Affiliate members can purchase an a-la-carte survey.
Your online survey will go live on the first of a month and run through the end of that same month. The survey is sent out to all current CHIME CIO members several times using both direct email and HTML email promotions. The electronic survey is hosted on the CHIME website for a total of 30 days.Upon completion of the survey (30 days), the collected raw data will be distributed to your contact in an Excel and PDF format, so that the results can be easily sorted and summarized to your firm’s specifications.
Survey Best Practices
To gain the most insight from your survey, follow an efficient, focused process. When information can be interpreted directly and without bias, a survey can be considered a success, and meaningful inferences can be made. Often, the simplest way to choose a survey topic is to ask yourself what topic you would like to know more about.
- Less Questions = More Responses
Total number of online survey questions must be 10 questions or less. When drafting your questionnaire make a mental distinction between what is essential to know, what would be useful to know, and what would be unnecessary. Retain the former, keep the useful to a minimum and discard the rest.
- Keep It Simple
Multiple choice questions are easier for respondents to comprehend; there is a clearer understanding of the purpose of the question with a limited set of choices where one answer is right for them. Open-ended questions reduce the attention the respondents give to answers.
- Keep the Personal Info Minimal and at the End
CHIME discourages Foundation firms from asking personal information on surveys. If you choose to solicit this information, a Harvard Business Review article on formatting of surveys suggests that demographic information (i.e., name) should be asked at the end of a survey and made optional, that way the participant has already answered the questions and is more likely to submit the survey regardless of whether they put in the demographic data or not.
Submitting Your Survey Proposal
The CHIME Foundation Resources area of chimecentral.org has much more information on survey tips. When you’re ready to schedule your survey, you can find the submission form here. In order to complete the form, you’ll need to have the following information ready:
- Title of Survey
- Introduction to Survey
- A simple, brief sentence in the form of a question that encompasses the nature of this survey to pose to respondents
- Survey questions to upload
Survey Results and Sharing/Publishing
The survey results, including raw data collected from the survey, may only be used by the Foundation firm and may not be published or otherwise made public without CHIME’s prior written consent, which may be withheld in CHIME’s sole discretion. Without limiting the foregoing, under no circumstances may Foundation firm use the name, tradename or logo of CHIME or any of its affiliates in connection with the survey results, including for purposes of a direct or indirect endorsement of its products or services. Foundation firm’s use of the online survey tool constitutes its acceptance of these use restrictions.

CPES Gives 2019 Foundation Chair and Participants a Chance to Get Acquainted
8.14.2018
By Cletis Earle Chair, CHIME Board; SVP, CIO Information TechnologyThis September I will participate in the 2018 CHIME Partner Education Summit as a faculty member. This will be my first time as a speaker at CPES, and I expect it will be a learning experience for me as well as for the Foundation firm members who will attend the event.
I am joined by a great group of CIO leaders, including many who sit with me on the CHIME Board of Trustees. The roster as it stands today includes:
- Russ Branzell, CHIME president and CEO;
- Daniel Barchi, CIO at New York Presbyterian;
- Drex DeFord, an independent consultant;
- Carina Edwards, senior vice president, customer experience, at Imprivata;
- Jennifer Greenman, vice president of information technology at Moffitt Cancer Center;
- John Kravitz, CIO at Geisinger Health System;
- Kara Marx, vice president of information services at Sharp Healthcare;
- Theresa Meadows, CIO at Cook Children’s Health System;

- Sarah Richardson, CIO for the California Market at DaVita Medical Group;
- Donna Roach, CIO for Ascension Health Services;
- Rusty Yeager, CIO at Encompass Health; and

More than half of these leaders have been steering the direction of CHIME this year through their roles on the Board of Trustees. It has been my privilege to serve as the chair, which also means I will be the chair of the CHIME Foundation Board in 2019. Although my official duty at CPES will be to share my insights and experiences as a senior healthcare IT executive with attendees, I hope to use the networking sessions to talk with Foundation firm members and get their views on the Foundation and how the Foundation can help industry partners excel.
I am especially delighted to meet industry representatives who, by attending CPES, have shown a commitment to their education and career development. This presents an ideal environment to discuss how we can all help the healthcare IT industry better serve patients and the providers, hospitals and health systems that care for them.
If you attend CPES, please be sure to say hello and chat with me. Given the caliber of my fellow faculty members and the topics we will address, I expect lively discussions during the educational programs and later at our networking events. I look forward to seeing you there.

The study, “Provider Adoption of Speech Recognition and its impact on Satisfaction, Documentation Quality, Efficiency, and Cost in an Inpatient EHR,” is available on PubMed Central, the U.S. National Institutes of Health digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. The results were presented at the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems Conference and American Medical Informatics Association’s 2018 Informatics Summit.
“This highly in-depth study reinforces the significance of accurate, quality clinical documentation in aiding the provider and supporting patient care,” said Dr. Kshitij Saxena, Health Quest’s chief medical information officer.
Sample Size
• 1,070,459 notes completed by 687 distinct providers studied;
• 121 providers completed an electronic pre-implementation survey;
• 108 providers (64 percent physicians, 18 percent nurse practitioners, and 18 percent physician assistants) completed a post-implementation survey with an average of 15 months use of speech recognition; and,
• 53 providers completed both the pre- and post-implementation surveys.Results
The following qualitative and quantitative results were realized:
• 99-point positive shift in Net Promoter Score® after using speech recognition versus prior input modalities indicating a significant increase in provider satisfaction, while 95 percent of providers reported introducing speech recognition for electronic documentation was a good idea.
• 81 percent of providers reported improved documentation quality and completeness, while 60 percent reported less time spent answering questions and clarifications.
• 84 percent of providers reported significant workflow improvements.
• 57 percent of providers reported decreased time spent documenting the patient encounter, an improvement over prior studies.
• Provider adoption of electronic clinical documentation increased from 20 percent to 77 percent, with a 74 percent speech recognition adoption rate.
• The organization realized an 81 percent reduction in monthly medical transcription costs, resulting in transcription cost savings of $1.37 million during the duration of the study.
“As we shift to a value-based payment model, it is important for providers to get credit reflective of the level of care and quality provided,” said Robert Diamond, Health Quest’s senior vice president and chief information officer. “Automating and optimizing the provider documentation workflow in the EHR through speech recognition has become a best practice at Health Quest.”Methodology
Health Quest teamed with Nuance to validate and share best practices for implementing speech recognition and expand upon prior research. Through this collaboration, the study also established a new baseline for the impact of speech recognition use on provider adoption, satisfaction, documentation quality, efficiency, and cost that other organizations can leverage and future research can expand upon.The 31-month study consisted of qualitative and quantitative segments that covered pre-implementation, pilot, implementation and post-implementation phases, resulting in the analysis of more than 1 million provider notes.
• Quantitative method: A new methodology was developed and implemented to measure the adoption of speech recognition by detecting the co-occurrences of speech recognition sessions and EHR note change events for the same provider simultaneously active in the EHR and speech recognition systems. To facilitate the accurate measurement of note volume evolution by various clinical documentation input modalities, data was collected from the EHR, speech recognition solution, and medical transcription solution at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, which had annual transcription costs of more than $1 million. All quantitative measurements were via retrospective, longitudinal, observational study.
• Qualitative Method: To measure provider satisfaction, documentation quality and efficiency, an electronic survey questionnaire was developed and deployed to assess expectations and experience regarding clinical documentation prior to the implementation of speech recognition and to evaluate the post-implementation documentation experience including speech recognition.
“Teaming with Health Quest on this extensive study brought together two like-minded organizations dedicated to the advancement of healthcare through technology,” said Satish Maripuri, executive vice president and general manager, Healthcare division, Nuance Communications. “The study outcomes reinforce the positive impact speech recognition technology can have across the care continuum and align with areas of importance for hospital CIOs, CMIOs and providers.”
