Halo Honors Chicago’s ‘Heroes of Medicine’
First Annual Halo Awards set for Oct. 25 in Chicago
Chicago, IL – October 25, 2018 – Celebrating Chicago’s “Heroes of Medicine,” Halo, the first online partnering platform that connects scientists from academia and industry, is hosting a Grammy-style awards event on Thursday, Oct. 25, to honor three local scientists working to advance their research into treatments that help people live better lives.
Halo’s inaugural “Heroes of Medicine” will honor:
● Teresa K. Woodruff Ph.D: The Thomas J. Watkins Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Northwestern University and a trailblazer in the study of fertility preservation in cancer patients. She pioneered a new interdisciplinary field of medical research she coined “oncofertility” that combines elements of oncology and fertility. In August 2018, she helped pass Illinois legislation requiring that health insurance companies cover egg freezing for cancer patients.
● Andrea Domenighetti Ph.D: Research Scientist at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab studying muscle tissue and stem cell dysfunction in patients with neurological conditions. He discovered that an already approved drug used to treat a form of blood cancer may cure muscle contractures in children with cerebral palsy.
● Eugene B. Chang, MD: Professor of Medicine at University of Chicago globally-recognized for his research on the microbiome. Dr. Chang is an expert in “gut health” and its impact on a wide variety of diseases, from diabetes to depression. He also co-founded and serves as Chief Medical Officer of AVNovum, a biotech startup exploring the role microbial interactions play in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
“Congratulations to our inaugural ‘Heroes of Medicine’ who exemplify Halo’s mission to turn more research into treatments by bringing academia and industry closer together,” said Kevin Leland, CEO and Founder of Halo. “The Halo Awards were created to recognize those exceptional scientists who have transcended the traditional role of academic scientist by working to advance their discoveries from their lab and into patients.”
Halo helps scientists fund their labs by connecting them to biotech and pharmaceutical companies for research collaborations. These collaborations occur today on an ad hoc basis and are largely the result of chance encounters at conferences, established institutional relationships or geographic proximity. By matching investigators directly with industry-sponsored research projects, Halo aims to democratize access to corporate funding just as government funding has become increasingly scarce.
This funding shortage is especially severe for translational research, a necessary stage of drug development sometimes referred to as the “valley of death” because so many promising discoveries fail to advance into a clinical setting, a result of various “gaps” in knowledge, expertise and resources.
“In this era of unprecedented scientific advances and technology, we are only beginning to close the gap between discovery and clinical application,” Dr. Chang said. “There has never been more purpose and urgency to leverage this knowledge to find ways to cure disease and maintain health and well-being.”
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) is the first hospital in the nation to focus exclusively on translational research, where it has discovery scientists and clinicians working side-by-side to apply research in real time.
“I am truly honored to receive this award from Halo,” said Dr. Domenighetti. “It is a recognition of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s translational approach to research, to sparking collaboration between clinicians and scientists with vastly different backgrounds and ideas in the name of better, faster recoveries for our patients.”
“The promise of basic science in medicine is that tomorrow’s patient will be treated better than today’s. This is my motto for the work my lab and I do and this has meant the transition of science from bench to bedside to babies,” Dr. Woodruff said. “I am delighted that biomedical research is being highlighted in this first ever award type and look forward to supporting the visionary Halo Awards for years to come.”.
The Halo Awards will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, at MATTER, a health-tech incubator in the Merchandise Mart, and begins at 5 p.m. with a cocktail reception featuring Beyond Curie, a traveling art exhibition by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, a neuroscientist-turned-designer and two-time TED speaker.
Programming begins at 6 p.m. with host Lisa Allen of 101.9 FM “The Mix” and will feature performances by Northwestern acapella group Purple Haze, drum ensemble Boomshaka and harpist Autumn Selover. An after-party at Sunda in River North will follow at 8 p.m. with medicinal-themed cocktails. Proceeds from the Halo Awards will be evenly distributed to the three award winners to help fund their ongoing research projects.

Former Board Chair Lynn Vogel Shares Lessons Learned in ‘Who Knew?’
10.24.2018
Candace Stuart – Director, Communications & Public RelationsLynn Vogel recognized he had the perfect title for his book “Who Knew? Inside the Complexity of American Health Care,” when the president described healthcare as “unbelievably complicated. Nobody knew that healthcare could be so complicated.” As a founding member of CHIME, former Board chair and a longtime healthcare IT executive, Vogel has been navigating the gnarly terrain of healthcare for more than 35 years. He decided it was time to share the knowledge he gained on that journey to help others better understand the industry.
He had already written several white papers as a founding advisor at Next Wave Health Advisors, now part of the Huntzinger Management Group. His initial goal was to reach early- and mid-stage startup companies that offered healthcare solutions but had a limited understanding of the industry. Some of those papers evolved into full-blown chapters that now make up his first book.
The book explores factors that make healthcare arguably the most complex industry in our economy –including the challenging patient population, the role of physicians, data management and interoperability, security and privacy, national and organizational politics, business models, markets and more. Vogel, whose career includes several academic appointments and CIO positions, used his skills as a researcher and educator to make the book steeped in evidence but not overly technical.
“I decided to write for a rather diverse audience because I felt that understanding healthcare was a challenge faced by many groups,” Vogel said. “These include CEOs, COOS and CFOs in healthcare organizations. In addition, they include board members, vendors, investors, and politicians who seem to be absolutely clueless about what to do about healthcare. Although it is essential that IT professionals understand just how complex healthcare is, the audience actually became much broader than IT.”
Vogel spent several years writing “Who Knew,” which he did while continuing his consulting work. “The challenge with these things is that once you get a couple of chapters done, you think maybe there is one other piece that should be included, so you add another chapter. … And then you say here’s another thing that is very important and should be its own chapter. It ended up, with the introduction and conclusion, being 11 chapters.”
The book will be published near the end of November by Productivity Press, which is part of Routledge Taylor Francis Group. It is available for pre-order from the publisher and on Amazon.

CHIME18 Keynoter Emily Chang Weighs in on IT, Workplace Issues and More
10.24.2018
Candace Stuart – Director, Communications & Public RelationsEmily Chang, host of “Bloomberg Technology” and a keynote speaker at the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum, discusses trends in healthcare IT, women in the IT workplace, the value of programs like Women of CHIME and diversity initiatives in a Q &A.
What notable trends have emerged in healthcare IT recently? What is driving those trends?
Artificial Intelligence is perhaps the most exciting thing that’s happened to healthcare IT in a generation. AI is powering more seamless interaction between doctor and patient, more personalized treatments and new drug discovery. This can be as simple as a digital app that shares information between patient and doctor or as transformational as curing diseases one at a time. DNA testing has become faster and cheaper while imaging technology has greatly improved, all unlocking troves of data, a virtual goldmine to patients, doctors and researchers. The healthcare industry will need to develop much more efficient ways to ingest, analyze, move and share that data safely, so that valuable information can be exploited while privacy is secured.
Within the information technology world, are there certain specialties that are more open to hiring women and diverse populations? If so, why?
In the technology industry, women are far better represented in business and marketing roles than they are in technical roles. Stereotypes of what makes a good computer engineer or programmer run deep and those stereotypes favor men. Employers are pattern matching for people who look like Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page and Jeff Bezos, none of whom are women. Furthermore, the tech industry bills itself as a meritocracy where anyone can succeed, however, a true meritocracy is impossible to achieve. There are some sectors where women entrepreneurs have broken out but overall, women are still very underrepresented across the industry.
CHIME created a Women of CHIME program in recent years to support female members. How important is it that such a group exist?
Employee resource groups to support workers of all backgrounds are incredibly important. Such groups give employees an opportunity to connect, network and even collaborate on broader diversity and inclusion initiatives and explore problems facing certain communities. They provide a safe space for workers to feel comfortable expressing their views and can also provide crucial leads on recruiting. Leadership should remain engaged in such groups in order for them to have a real voice and remain connected to the company, and the overall goal should be to include all workers within the whole company regardless of lower-level networking opportunities.
This year CHIME is launching a diversity initiative to encourage a broad swath of students to consider health IT careers. Has this approach been successful in Silicon Valley? If so, how and why?
Outreach to students and next generation workers is critical to keep the pipeline open from schools to industry. But making sure those young workers feel included and motivated once they arrive is just as critical. Many big tech companies have committed millions of dollars to encourage more students to study computer science, but the diversity statistics at these companies are not changing. Tech companies also need to reform their hiring and promotion processes and re-set their cultural values to make sure the pipeline can flow freely.
What advice would you give a young person who is considering a career in healthcare IT?
You can do it! And, we need you! Look for a company where you feel you will have a voice, where you can find your team, colleagues who will advocate for and mentor you, and where you can not only be challenged, but be yourself. With work and life becoming increasingly intertwined, don’t just choose a job, choose life.
Editor’s note: Emily Chang will speak at 8:30 a.m. PST at the CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Diego. Her presentation will be live streamed for members who cannot attend.

Nuance Ranked #1 in 2018 Healthcare Industry Report from Black Book Research
Nuance rated highest for client experience, satisfaction and loyalty by hospitals, physicians, inpatient facilities and ambulatory care organizations
Burlington, MA – October 24, 2018 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that it has been ranked #1 for the sixth consecutive year in an annual healthcare report published by Black Book Research. Nuance was ranked first in End to End Coding, CAC, clinical documentation improvement (CDI) and HIM Solutions: Inpatient Hospitals and Health Systems as well as the Physician Practices, Groups, Clinics and Ambulatory Care. In addition, Nuance was rated highest in client experience, satisfaction and loyalty among inpatient facilities, ambulatory care organizations and physician practices and groups. The top rank achievement comes on the heels of Nuance’s launch of AI-powered CDE One, a cloud-based workflow management, collaboration and insight system designed for CDI teams. CDE One reflects Nuance’s commitment to provide CDI teams with highly innovative solutions to enhance care team collaboration, satisfaction and efficiency.
Black Book surveys healthcare executives and frontline users about their current technology and services partners, and awards top-performing vendors based on indicators of client experience, loyalty and customer satisfaction. The rankings are a result of the 2018 survey responses from 2,920 healthcare providers and organizations.
The Black Book survey of hospital technology, financial and physician leaders found coding and clinical documentation improvements are now imperative. 85 percent of hospitals surveyed and 95 percent of physician practices report cutting transcription costs in half or more while improving the transparency of dictation and transcription processes within one year of implementing end-to-end coding, CDI and transcription software tools. 90 percent of providers realized operational efficiencies without impacting clinician workflows. 82 percent of hospital chief financial officers who participated in the Black Book Survey reported that comprehensive coding, CDI and transcription programs delivered among the most rapid return on all technology investments in 2017-2018.
“In today’s healthcare environment, the need for proper clinical documentation improvement technology has never been more essential as it can dramatically improve operational efficiency in healthcare organizations,” said Doug Brown, managing partner of Black Book. “Achieving the top rank for six years running demonstrates the effectiveness of Nuance’s CDI solutions in helping accelerate workflows and accurate, more timely reimbursements for its clients.”
“Black Book Research is a well-respected firm in the healthcare industry and we are honored that our AI-powered, end-to-end clinical documentation solutions are repeatedly ranked number one for their ability to offer clinicians and care teams the in-workflow intelligence they need to provide the highest quality care,” said Michael Clark, senior vice president and general manager of Provider Solutions at Nuance. “Our solutions help clinicians and care teams reduce the amount of time they spend documenting each patient encounter, one of the leading causes of burnout. Not only are they saving time that can be reinvested in patient care, but they’re able to document the complete patient story at the point of care with our AI-powered solutions which supports them getting paid for the care they provided.”
Nuance achieved the highest scores on the majority of the 18 performance indicators measured among hospitals, inpatient facilities, and physician practices, groups and clinics. The coding-centric, key performance indicators measured by Black Book are: Strategic Alignment of Client Goals including value-based care and MACRA; Innovation & Optimization; Training; Client relationships and cultural fit; Trust, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics; Breadth of offerings, client types, delivery excellence; Deployment and outsourcing implementation; Customization; Integration and interfaces; Scalability, client adaptability, flexible pricing; Compensation and employee performance; Reliability; Brand image and marketing communications; Marginal value adds and modules; Financial and Managerial Viability; Cybersecurity; Support and customer care; and Best-of-breed technology and process improvement.

eClinicalWorks Develops Opioid Risk Tool to Effectively Assess Patient Risk for Opioid Misuse
The eClinicalWorks Opioid Risk Tool will increase safety of prescribing for controlled substances and prevent and detect opioid misuse and abuse
Westborough, MA – October 23, 2018 – eClinicalWorks®, a leader in healthcare IT solutions, today announced the Opioid Risk Tool (ORT), a smart form to assess and address a patient’s risk for opioid misuse and to improve physician adherence to treatment protocols. More than 11.5 million Americans, aged 12 or older, reported misusing prescription opioids in 2016.[1] ORT will ensure providers have a solution to combat drug misuse, and specifically the opioid epidemic, leading to better and safer medicine across the nation.
eClinicalWorks developed the ORT to improve how opioids are prescribed and to reduce related harm and deaths. The ORT includes a clinical decision support system that estimates a patient’s risk and provides suggestions prescribing alternatives to opioids or opioid antagonists. ORT includes a sophisticated tool which calculates the morphine milliequivalents (MME) for patients and alerts the provider when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended opioid dose has been exceeded. Patients prescribed opioids will receive educational notifications providing drug information and instructions for safe storage and disposal. By empowering adherence to treatment protocols, the tool will increase safety of prescribing for controlled substances and prevent and detect opioid misuse and abuse.
eClinicalWorks supports Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS), and in association with Appriss Health, eClinicalWorks has built a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) integration that allows physicians to access state databases at the point of care. The partnership automatically integrates into the EHR, streamlining PDMP data access for providers, offering a solution to combat drug misuse, and specifically the opioid epidemic. Currently, 33 states are integrated through Appriss with PDMP and providers have already taken steps to manage improper prescribing and dispensing for controlled substances. The ORT will now further enhance access of PDMP data in real time for earlier identification and intervention, minimizing opioid misuse and improving clinical outcomes.
“The opioid epidemic is a problem of significant proportions that is only getting worse. At eClinicalWorks, we have a joint responsibility with healthcare providers towards developing solutions to improve patient care,” said Girish Navani, CEO and cofounder of eClinicalWorks. “The Opioid Risk Tool will assist in combating the opioid epidemic, ensuring patients have access to safer treatment for chronic pain and reduce the misuse of these drugs. We can do our part to limit the number of pills in circulation and believe the ORT will lead to progress in providing better and safer medicine across the nation.”
The Opioid Risk tool was developed based on recent research and the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain.

This invitation-only event will focus on ways to empower patients and families to lead human-centered design innovation in partnership with clinicians.
Research published by the Experience Innovation Network shows that many health systems are getting better at including patients in traditional improvement strategies, but more work is needed to deeply engage patients and families as co-architects in all aspects of care. This milestone CXO Roundtable will kick off with an interactive discovery and design workshop with six patients. Partnering with Nick Dawson, Chair of the Executive Board at Stanford MedicineX, this workshop will teach participants the principles and practices of a successful patient-led design process to reshape the future of caring.
“Healing healthcare starts by empowering patients with the tools they need to lead design innovation and continues with engaging healthcare leaders to give them the power to use those tools,” said Bridget Duffy, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Vocera and co-founder of the Experience Innovation Network. “It is time to transcend traditional ideas, break down silos, and reimagine new ways care teams work together with patients and families.”
Keynote speakers for the CXO Roundtable are Chip Conley, MBA, author of “Wisdom @ Work: The Making of a Modern Elder,” and Patch Adams, MD, founder Gesundheit! Institute. Conley, the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality and strategic advisor for hospitality and leadership at Airbnb, recently founded the Modern Elder Academy to help people reframe and repurpose their lifetime of experiences to add greater good to the world. He is also collaborating with the Experience Innovation Network to create an academy cohort for healthcare professionals to mentor the next generation of leaders.
For more than 40 years, Dr. Adams has devoted his life to changing healthcare and healing people with joy and creativity. In 1971, he founded Gesundheit! Institute and has been relentless in his mission to care for others without a voice. His work has helped inspire global discussions about healthcare delivery with a focus on compassion and service to ease the suffering of humanity.

Zingbox Reveals Details of the Vulnerabilities in Telepresence Robots
Leading IoT Security Provider Releases Important Vulnerability Details
Mountain View, CA – October 17, 2018 – Zingbox, the provider of the most widely deployed healthcare Internet of Things (IoT) analytics platform, today announced research detailing the vulnerabilities in telepresence robots that can be leveraged by hackers to access sensitive data such as chat conversations, images and live video streams.
“I commend the quick actions by the device manufacturers, which enable us to share additional details regarding this vulnerability and educate the industry on the latest cyber threats.”
Following the initial findings showcased at the RSA conference in April 2018, Zingbox security researchers continued to work with the manufacturers. These efforts resulted in five Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) outlining various vulnerabilities, ranging from unprotected credentials to unauthorized remote access. Zingbox is now releasing the details of the vulnerabilities after the manufacturers had an opportunity to address the issues.
“While much of the burden of ensuring device security falls on the healthcare providers, the collaboration between device manufacturers and security vendors is a critical component to assist healthcare providers,” said Daniel Regalado, principal security researcher at Zingbox and co-author of Gray Hat Hacking. “I commend the quick actions by the device manufacturers, which enable us to share additional details regarding this vulnerability and educate the industry on the latest cyber threats.”
The research provides details on how a telepresence robot can initially be targeted by intercepting firmware updates or gaining access via remote hacking. In addition to the theft of sensitive data, the report also details how a hacker can gain access to video recordings.
