CHIME Announces Top 10 Most Wired Recipients at CHIME18
11.08.2018
Michelle Patterson – VP, OperationsCHIME concluded our first CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired program on Nov. 2 at CHIME18 with a bang – or more accurately, with a drum roll. Many CIO members from hospitals and health systems that received Most Wired status were in the CHIME18 audience and were invited to stand and be recognized.
“We set the bar high and you met the challenge,” Most Wired Governing Board Chair Bill Spooner said as he presided at the podium. “This is only the start for Most Wired. Under CHIME, we are making Most Wired the standard-bearer for our industry. Each year we will reassess the survey questions to make sure they reflect leading practices and successful, innovative uses of technology. We will reset the threshold each year, too.”
CHIME had notified the top 10 recipients in advance that they were in that elite group and would be named from the stage. But they didn’t know where they fell until their name was called, starting with the No. 10 spot and ending with a drum roll for No. 1. All top 10 recipients attended, with one exception. And the top 10 are:
- Nicklaus Children’s Health System in Miami, Fla.
- Baptist Health South Florida in Coral Gables, Fla.
- Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Penn.
- Altru Health System in Grand Forks, N.D.
- Avera Health, Sioux Falls, S.D.
- Atrium Health in Charlotte, N.C.
- Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, Wyo.
- Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles, Calif.
- Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich.
- UCLA Health in Los Angeles, Calif.
All recipients were listed in a publication jointly published by CHIME and Modern Healthcare Custom Media. The supplement will also be distributed the Modern Healthcare’s more than 70,000 readers. The supplement is available here. CHIME had released an industry trends report earlier, which is available online here.
Thank you to everyone who participated. You helped make Most Wired a great success. We hope to see you again when the survey opens in early spring of next year.

Akron Children’s Hospital and CTG Present Webinar on Moving to a Value-Based Care Model
Buffalo, NY – November 6, 2018 – CTG (NASDAQ: CTG),a leading provider of information technology (IT) solutions and services in North America and Western Europe, and Akron Children’s Hospital announced a new webinar on how the large pediatric system transformed from being encounter-based to positioning itself for value-based contracts. The webinar “One Hospital’s Journey from a Fee-for-Service Culture to a Value-Based Care Model” will be co-presented on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. E.T./10:00 a.m. C.T. by the executive and operational project team members from both organizations who led the transformation.
To attend the webinar, REGISTER HERE.
During the webinar, attendees will learn how Akron Children’s, with the assistance of CTG, prepared their operations, both clinically and culturally, for a changing health environment as they continue to help families manage childhood conditions and overall wellness. They will also see how this journey of transformation, which involved significant administrative support with extensive policy, procedure, and cultural restructuring, was designed and developed entirely with a patient-centered medical home (PCMH) focus to meet the requirements of Ohio’s Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) initiative. Akron Children’s Hospital was an early adopter of CPC.
Among the topics to be covered in-depth are:
- Team-based care concepts
- Quality reporting
- Electronic medical records optimization
- Practice dashboards
- Management huddles
- Risk stratification methodology for complex condition
- Sustainability and growth
To date, the transformation project has achieved strong measurable results, the most significant of which is that all 28 primary care pediatric offices have met the six core concepts needed to be recognized as a National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) PCMH. All have also qualified for per member per month reimbursement under CPC, creating a revenue stream to support Akron Children’s Hospital’s transition to value-based care.
“There is a lot of talk about the need to make the transition to value-based care, and a lot of theory around it, but not many trails have been blazed yet,” said Rob Barras, Vice President of Sales, Healthcare Solutions at CTG. “This webinar provides a real-world look at a program that has been successful on both financial and clinical fronts, and offers strong guidance on how to involve an entire staff in the process to assist with sustainability.”

Most Wired Hospitals Look Beyond Foundational Technologies to Transform Healthcare
SAN DIEGO, CA, Nov. 2, 2018 – Hospitals and health systems at the forefront of using healthcare IT to improve the delivery of care have maximized the benefits of foundational technologies and are embracing new technologies that support population management and value-based care. The most successful organizations not only adopt technology but apply it strategically to achieve great outcomes, according to an analysis of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) HealthCare’s Most Wired survey results.
HealthCare’s Most Wired, now in its 20th year, traditionally tracked the adoption of healthcare IT in hospitals and health systems. CHIME took over the Most Wired program and revised the survey questions and methodology this year to highlight strengths and gaps in the industry. The goal is to identify best practices and promote the strategic use of healthcare IT to elevate the health and care of communities around the world.
Organizations who participated in the survey and met the high threshold established by the Most Wired Governing Board were recognized today at the CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Diego. CHIME made a report based on an analysis of survey results available as well.
The report found two key areas that emerged in 2018: the use of foundational technologies such as integration, interoperability, security and disaster recovery; and the use of transformational technologies to support population health management, value-based care, patient engagement and telehealth. These foundational pieces need to be in place for an organization to leverage tools to effectively transform healthcare.
“Healthcare IT has the potential to revolutionize care around the world, but to meet that potential it must be used strategically,” said Russell Branzell, president and CEO of CHIME. “The technology is important, but leadership and a strategic vision are equally important. The diversity of the organizations that earned Most Wired status this year shows quality care can be achieved almost anywhere under the right leadership. By sharing the best practices in Most Wired, we hope quality care will one day be available everywhere.”
The report findings fell into the two categories of foundational and transformational technologies. Highlights under foundational technologies include:
- 94 percent of participants used integrated clinical application suites and 86 percent used remote published applications.
- About three-fourths send blood glucose, bedside blood pressure, bedside pulse oximetry and EKG data directly to the EHR but only 25 percent send data directly from IV pumps and 10 percent from in-bed scale.
- Almost all physicians have electronic access to the EHR and other resources but only half have access to these resources using mobile applications.
- 94 percent can consume data in some form from a Continuity of Care Document (CCD) and 97 percent can contribute to a CCD but only 60 percent can consume discrete data with a home health agency or a skilled nursing home.
- Only 29 percent report having a comprehensive security program in place.
- Nearly all use firewalls, dispose devices containing personal health information properly and secure mobile devices with passwords but many lack other fundamental authentication and safeguarding procedures.
- 68 percent believe they could restore operations within 24 hours if a disaster caused complete loss of their primary data center.
Highlights under transformational technologies include:
- 76 percent can perform retroactive analysis for care improvement and cost reduction but only 43 percent can manage bundled payments or do real-time identification and tracking of value-based care conditions.
- 57 percent use clinical and billing data as well as health information exchanges to identify gaps in care.
- Most provider organizations’ population health strategies target diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, heart disease and hypertension but few target behavioral health, sickle cell anemia and end-stage renal disease.
- For patient engagement, 81 percent report capabilities like email and more than half offer satisfaction surveys; 67 percent offer secure email exchange with a member of home care team and 38 percent offer virtual patient visits.
- Most offer conveniences such as requesting a prescription renewal or paying a bill through a patient portal; 90 percent offer a mobile patient portal; and nearly all offer access to test results and visit summaries.
- 89 percent offer some form of telehealth service, but few offer focused telehealth services such as genetic counseling or rehabilitation.
- About half use ePrescribing for controlled substances and 48 percent have their ePrescribing module connected to a prescription drug monitoring program.

254 Organizations Named 2018 CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired Recipients
SAN DIEGO, CA, Nov. 2, 2018 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) has named 254 organizations 2018 CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired recipients. The honor, which is given to hospitals and health systems that are at the forefront of using healthcare IT to improve the delivery of care, was announced at the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Diego.
A total of 647 organizations representing 2,190 hospitals from nine countries submitted surveys. A supplement listing the 254 organizations was released at the forum and published online on the CHIME website as well as on Modern Healthcare Custom Media’s website.
CHIME also announced the names of the top 10 organizations that received Most Wired recognition. They are:
- Nicklaus Children’s Health System in Miami, Fla.
- Baptist Health South Florida in Coral Gables, Fla.
- Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Penn.
- Altru Health System in Grand Forks, N.D.
- Avera Health, Sioux Falls, S.D.
- Atrium Health in Charlotte, N.C.
- Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, Wyo.
- Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles, Calif.
- Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich.
- UCLA Health in Los Angeles, Calif.
This is the first year that CHIME oversaw the Most Wired program. CHIME revised and streamlined the survey to make sure questions reflect leading practices and successful, innovative uses of technology. Other changes include creating a new scoring methodology, setting a higher threshold to become a recipient, offering a comprehensive benchmarking report to all participants, and restructuring the governing board with no sitting CIOs as members to remove any perceived bias or conflicts of interest. CHIME also published an industry trends report, which was made available online here.
“At CHIME, we believe that sharing best practices nationally and globally across the healthcare IT industry will improve patient safety and outcomes everywhere,” said CHIME President and CEO Russell Branzell. “Most Wired will help us achieve that goal, and more.”
William Spooner, chair of the Most Wired Governing Board, said that the governing board will reassess the survey questions and recalibrate the threshold each year to drive change in the industry.“This is only the start for Most Wired,” Spooner said. “Most Wired has a new purpose, and that is the relentless pursuit of excellence in healthcare. We won’t quit until we have achieved excellence across our industry.”

Allina Health CIO and Health Catalyst Win 2018 CHIME Collaboration Award
Salt Lake City, UT – November 1, 2018 – Health Catalyst, Inc., a leader in next-generation data, analytics, and decision support, and Allina Health, a 13-hospital, 90-clinic integrated delivery network based in Minneapolis, today received the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives Collaboration Award at the organization’s CHIME18 Fall CIO Forum. The award recognizes the successful long-term collaboration between CHIME Foundation firm Health Catalyst and CHIME member Allina Health, with special recognition for Allina CIO Jonathan Shoemaker.
“We are honored to receive this recognition from CHIME, which reflects our success in using organizational change and data to increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve outcomes,” said Shoemaker. “With the help of Health Catalyst, Allina Health has saved millions of dollars and improved our ability to deliver on our mission of enhancing the greater health of individuals, families and communities throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin.”
The collaboration between Allina Health and Health Catalyst is virtually unprecedented in healthcare. In 2015, the two organizations signed a $100 million agreement under which Allina Health outsourced its data warehousing, analytics and performance improvement technology, content and personnel to Health Catalyst to accelerate the health system’s transformation. The 60 Allina employees working in these areas became Health Catalyst team members working onsite at Allina. Simultaneously, Allina Health gained access to Health Catalyst’s full technology, content and deployment expertise to help the health system achieve faster improvements in outcomes at lower cost.
The technologies to which Allina has gained access include Health Catalyst’s Data Operating System (DOS™), a software engineering approach that combines the features of data warehousing, clinical data repositories, application development and health information exchanges in a single technology platform. Yet technology explains only part of what Allina has achieved since joining forces with Health Catalyst. Multidisciplinary improvement teams and a new project management infrastructure have also been essential to Allina’s transformation over the past decade. None of this would have been possible without the integrated data and the advanced analytics that have enabled Allina to carry out a series of clinical, operational and financial improvement projects.
“We are deeply gratified that CHIME has recognized Allina Health for its pioneering work in clinical transformation,” said Dan Burton, CEO of Health Catalyst. “Allina was our first customer and remains our most significant partner in the development and use of the Health Catalyst Data Operating System, our data and analytics platform. Allina has demonstrated what a truly determined and tech-savvy healthcare organization can do to move the needle on quality and cost.”
Overview of results
The combination of Allina’s analytics platform and its project management structure provided the foundation for a variety of clinical, operational and financial improvement projects. In one year, these projects saved a total of $125 million in the following areas:
- Productivity improvements – $43 million
- Clinical documentation – $14 million
- Site specific initiatives – $25 million
- Care integration – $10 million
- Length of stay – $3 million
- Reducing clinical variations – $30 million
The reduction in care variations resulted from a range of improvement projects, including lowering heart failure readmissions; lowering all preventable readmissions; improving stroke care; improving outcomes for spinal conditions; and improving cancer outcomes.

Healthcare Professionals Overly Confident About Visibility and Security of Their Connected Medical Devices
Mountain View, CA – November 1, 2018 – Zingbox, the provider of the most widely deployed healthcare Internet of Things (IoT) analytics platform and leader of healthcare IoT security research, today released the report of its second annual Healthcare Security Survey. The survey was expanded this year to include not only IT/IS professionals, but also clinical and biomedical engineers who play critical roles in managing and securing connected medical devices.
“Only by adopting the latest IoT technology and revisiting decade-old processes, can healthcare providers be well prepared when the next WannaCry hits.”
The survey revealed a contradiction between the confidence that healthcare professionals have in the visibility of connected medical devices and security of their networks, and the inefficient and ineffective legacy processes many still rely on to keep them secure.
Legacy Solutions Can’t Effectively Secure a Network of Connected Medical Devices
The vast majority of healthcare IT professionals feel confident that the connected medical devices in their hospitals are protected in case of a cyberattack:
- 79 percent say their organization has real-time information about which connected medical devices are vulnerable to cyber attacks
- 87 percent are confident that their devices are protected in the event of a cyber attack
- 69 percent feel traditional security solutions for laptops and PCs are adequate to secure connected medical devices
Unfortunately, their confidence is not justified. “Most organizations are thinking about antivirus, endpoint protection and firewalls, but there are many devices — like medical monitoring equipment — and no one is thinking about securing them,” said Jon Booth, Bear Valley Community Hospital District IT director and Zingbox customer. Additionally, as noted in a Gartner report, Market Trends: Five Healthcare Provider Trends for 2018 published in November 2017 notes: “Generally, medical devices are not replaced for at least 10 years, with many running old software that has not been updated or patched.”
And there are other challenges: the Zingbox survey revealed 41 percent of healthcare IT professionals do not have a separate or sufficient budget for securing connected devices.
Majority of Clinical and Biomedical Engineers Still Rely on Manual Processes for IoT Devices
When asked about inventory of connected medical devices, majority of clinical and biomedical engineers (85 percent) were confident that they have an accurate inventory of all connected medical devices even though many rely on manual audits, which are prone to human error and quickly become outdated. Additional responses from clinical and biomedical engineers include:
- Close to two-thirds (64 percent) of responses indicate reliance on some form of manual room-to-room audit or use of static database to inventory the connected devices in their organization
- Just 21 percent of responses say their devices receive preventative maintenance based on device usage as opposed to some kind of fixed schedule
The survey also shows that more than half (55 percent) of responses indicate clinical/biomedical engineers must walk over to the device or call others to check on their behalf whether a device is in-use before scheduling repairs. Many make the trip only to find out that the device is in-use by patients and must try again in the future hoping for better luck.
“Despite the recent progress of the healthcare industry, the survey exemplifies the continued disconnect between perception of security and the actual device protection available from legacy solutions and processes. Unfortunately, much of the current perception stems from the use of traditional solutions, processes and general confusion in the market,” said Xu Zou, CEO and co-founder of Zingbox. “Only by adopting the latest IoT technology and revisiting decade-old processes, can healthcare providers be well prepared when the next WannaCry hits.”

Survey Methodology
The survey was conducted online by Propeller Insights on behalf of Zingbox in October 2018 among more than 400 U.S.-based healthcare IT decision-makers and clinical engineers. The results were weighted to the U.S. census for age, gender, region and income.

CHIME Names Nuance Communications VP Kali Durgampudi 2018 Foundation Industry Leader
SAN DIEGO, CA, Nov. 1, 2018 – When the public policy team at the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) put out an urgent call for a subject matter expert to travel to Capitol Hill to brief the Congressional Artificial Intelligence Caucus on the technology’s potential, Kali Durgampudi, vice president of innovation and mobile architecture at Nuance Communications, answered. And when chief information officers (CIOs) in India and CHIME wanted to create CHIME’s first chapter outside the U.S., Durgampudi was there to make it happen.Today, CHIME recognized Durgampudi for his many contributions with the highest honor given to a Foundation firm member. He was awarded the prestigious CHIME Foundation Industry Leader Award at the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Diego. The award recognizes a Foundation firm representative who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and made outstanding contributions to the healthcare industry, CHIME and the CHIME Foundation.Durgampudi, who serves on CHIME’s International Advisory Board, also is helping to establish ties with innovation centers around the world. But of all his contributions, he is most proud of his work helping establish the CHIME India Chapter, which launched in 2017.“When I raised my hand and said, ‘Let me help you with India,’ CIOs in India did not know what CHIME was and did not realize the positive impact that the Foundation could and would have. CHIME India is now the only CHIME entity outside the U.S. — with a board as well as nationwide conferences and meetings. The top eight CIOs in the country are on the board and out of the registered CIO members more than 60 percent are CHCIO-certified.”On Nov. 30, 2017, the CHIME India Chapter hosted its first CHIME Leadership Academy in Mumbai, with faculty from CHIME providing educational sessions followed by panel discussions that included CHIME Foundation members. Durgampudi said healthcare IT executives in India have gained valuable knowledge and skills from their associations with CHIME, but India also offers lessons that could benefit domestic members. For instance, India has something akin to a national patient health ID program, while the U.S. continues to wrestle with the issue.“Kali embraces the CHIME mission and we are proud to award him with our highest honor,” said CHIME Foundation Board Chair Liz Johnson, chief innovation officer at Tenet Healthcare Corporation. “He challenges himself, and everyone around him, to be innovative and think big. CHIME and the CHIME Foundation are better because of him.”About CHIMEThe College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is an executive organization dedicated to serving chief information officers (CIOs), chief medical information officers (CMIOs), chief nursing information officers (CNIOs) and other senior healthcare IT leaders. With more than 2,800 members in 51 countries and over 150 healthcare IT business partners and professional services firms, CHIME provides a highly interactive, trusted environment enabling senior professional and industry leaders to collaborate; exchange best practices; address professional development needs; and advocate the effective use of information management to improve the health and healthcare in the communities they serve.
