2019: A Year of Learning and Sharing
1.15.2019
Cletis Earle, Chair, Foundation Board, Kaleida HealthAs a member of CHIME, I often am the beneficiary of my relationships with CHIME Foundation firms and the people in them. When I want to evaluate a new technology, I can tap into the technical expertise of a company that specializes in just that technology. When I need to squeeze every dime from a budget, I can turn to Foundation partners to help me find the best deal. And when I have a problem, I have access to the top-tier executives in their companies who can help me right the ship much faster than if I had to follow the standard channels.
This year I will serve as the chair of the CHIME Foundation Board. I have had the opportunity to get to know many of our Foundation partners, either while I was the 2018 CHIME Board chair, a faculty member at the 2018 CHIME Partner Education Summit (CPES) or through CHIME’s many networking events. I hope this year to meet and interact with each of our partner firms and learn about your goals and needs.
As your board chair, I look forward to finding new and better ways to help you and CHIME members foster the kinds of relationships that I have experienced. We know healthcare is a challenging environment, but also one with exciting opportunities. Healthcare IT is evolving at a fevered pace. To harness its potential, we need CIO and industry partners learning from each other and sharing what we know.
This year will be one of education and engagement. I encourage you to take advantage of the educational opportunities we offer. With CPES, you can enjoy programs designed specifically – and exclusively – for Foundation firm representatives. But you also have a chance to attend the keynotes at CHIME’s spring and fall forums, as well as track sessions and other events. CHIME is holding our second annual Advocacy Summit in June, too, where you and your team can join members of CHIME and CHIME’s associations as we all try to make sense of policy in Washington, D.C.
CHIME will continue to offer numerous networking events during educational sessions to allow you to get to know CIO members. Focus groups also provide a chance to exchange ideas candidly and with no distractions. It is these kinds of experiences that pave the way for long-lasting partnerships.
On behalf of the CHIME Foundation team, I wish you a happy New Year and a wonderful 2019. Please keep in touch and let us know how we can help you make this the best year yet.

Novarad Named in Gartner Guide for Vendor-Neutral Archives as a Representative Vendor
Report finds that “While the VNA, in and of itself, is not a comprehensive enterprise image strategy, it will come to be considered a key component”
SALT LAKE CITY, UT—January 10, 2019—Novarad Corporation, a leader in the development of medical imaging software, announced today that it has been cited as a Representative Vendor in the 2018 Gartner Market Guide for Vendor-Neutral Archives by analyst Barry Runyon (published on 8 November). Novarad’s Ncompass Enterprise Imaging solution, consisting of the Ncompass Universal Archive and Ncompass Workflow Modules, manages healthcare information by providing an efficient workflow for managing both DICOM and non-DICOM objects throughout the hospital by transitioning the storage of images and patient information from hard drives, disks, disparate archives, and USB drives to a vendor neutral archive. “The software is easy to use and can pretty much run itself,” said another reviewer, a lead radiology technologist in the healthcare industry.

Coming Up Soon: Spring Forum, Leadership Academies and Advocacy Summit
1.10.2018
Tim Stettheimer – VP, EducationFlorida. Maryland. Washington, D.C. Those are some of the places you will be able to visit this winter and spring to attend CHIME’s growing list of educational events.
The CHIME HIMSS Spring Forum will be in Orlando, Fla., this year. We have four dynamic speakers who will present keynote addresses on Feb. 11 at this national conference. Each speaker will offer valuable knowledge and inspiring messages from their personal stories and experiences. They will provide a connected path for attendees to travel that will move from a global view of the state of healthcare to new research on the underlying determinants of health and care. From there, when you attend, our speakers will introduce new and developing technologies that will change how we advance health IT in 2019 and beyond. And as we complete our path of learning, we will deepen our understanding and commitment to change with a renewed motivation for personal leadership in the year to come.
The speakers who will lead us on our journey at the forum start with an opening keynote from Vivek H. Murthy, MD, who served as the 19th surgeon general of the United States from December 2014 to April 2017. As surgeon general, he made innovation and improving health his top priorities. He will talk about the state of healthcare today, setting the foundation for the speakers who follow.
Second is Claire Pomeroy, MD, MBA, an expert in infectious diseases and a long-time advocate for patients. Now the president and CEO of the Lasker Foundation, she has used her experiences as a child in foster care to inform her approach to improving health and care. Her presentation will focus on the underlying social determinants of health.
Our mid-afternoon keynote will venture into the world of artificial intelligence and robotics with a keynote from one of the world’s leading authorities on advanced technologies. Neil Jacobstein, chair of the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Track at Singularity University and a distinguished visiting scholar at Stanford University Media X Program, will explore how these technologies are transforming healthcare and how healthcare IT executives can apply them in their hospitals and health systems.
The educational part of the forum will close with Kristina and Kate Sheridan, a mother-daughter duo who will share their professional and personal journey in our healthcare system. Kristina Sheridan combines her experience as a caregiver of chronic pediatric patients and systems engineering to help the healthcare and IT communities develop and provide tools to manage the care of complex patients. Kate Sheridan is a patient empowerment advocate who survived complex chronic conditions and is now pursuing a career in healthcare.

Ed Kopetsky, 2018 CIO of the Year: A Warrior for Change and Improvement
1.10.2018
Candace Stuart – Director, Communications & Public RelationsAs CHIME Board chair in 1998, Ed Kopetsky proposed an idea that changed the course in healthcare IT. Under his leadership, CHIME for the first time invited physicians to attend the fall forum. That helped set the foundation for what evolved into the chief medical information officer. And some of those CMIOs have moved on to become CIOs.
“We were ahead of the curve,” Kopetsky recalled. Those early insights to wed clinical and IT experience have had a profound effect on healthcare IT and patient care. “We never could have had the clinical automation that we had the last 10 years with CIOs only,” he said. “It had to be with clinicians. It was a critical success factor.”
Throughout his career, Kopetsky has been ahead of the curve, recognizing needs and opportunities long before they were obvious. Now CIO of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and Stanford Children’s Health, he has been at the forefront of change at several prominent healthcare systems as well as in industry. For this and many other contributions he has made, he was named the 2018 John E. Gall Jr. CIO of the Year. CHIME and HIMSS, whose boards jointly selected him for the award, announced the honor earlier this week. The award is given annually to a CIO who has shown significant leadership and commitment to the healthcare industry during his or her career.
In 2009, Kopetsky joined Stanford Children’s, where he has led large-scale change to support integrated patient care, high-performance business and analytics systems and innovative digital health technologies. Stanford Children’s received the HIMSS Stage 7 Acute Care and Ambulatory Awards in 2015, demonstrating best practice for electronic patient records adoption and use, and the 2017 HIMSS Davies Award for improving patient outcomes and care processes using health IT and analytics. He previously served as CIO at Sharp HealthCare, where he helped automate the continuum of care to extend beyond the inpatient setting, and Centura Health. Before assuming the CIO post at Stanford Children’s, he was a partner at Healthlink and IBM.
Kopetsky credits his training in systems engineering and experience in integrating healthcare organizations for his ability to spot industry trends and innovate solutions. He also says he was privileged to work with and learn from gifted leaders and mentors throughout his career, and to be supported by talented teams. He sees his role, and that of other healthcare IT leaders, as a warrior for change and improvement in healthcare.
“It is just what we do,” he said. “If you are just keeping the lights on, you are toast.”
He was among the pioneering CIOs to become founding members of CHIME in 1992 and has been an active member of HIMSS since 1987. He started and chaired a HIMSS chapter in San Diego in 1988 and three decades later joined the HIMSS Executive Institute. His contributions to CHIME include board member (1996-1999) CHIME chair (1998) and CHIME Foundation Board member (2002-2005). After losing his son to an accidental opioid overdose in late 2017, he helped launch the CHIME Opioid Task Force in 2018, which he co-chairs.
Kopetsky will be honored on Feb. 11 at the 2019 CHIME HIMSS CIO Forum in Orlando, Fla. He will officially receive the award at the HIMSS19 conference that runs Feb. 11-15 in Orlando. The award is named for John E. Gall Jr., who pioneered implementation of the first fully integrated medical system in the world in El Camino Hospital in California in the 1960s.

CHIME, AEHIS Members Contribute to National Cybersecurity Report
1.10.2018
Erik Decker – Chair, The University of Chicago MedicineAt the end of 2018, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a cybersecurity report that included valuable insights from CHIME and AEHIS members. HHS unveiled Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices: Managing Threats and Protecting Patients (HICP), a four-part document designed to assist healthcare organizations mitigate the top cybersecurity threats we face today. It is the work product of the 405(d) Task Group, where I serve as industry lead and co-chair along with my HHS government counterpart, Julie Chua.
“Many of the most influential industry organizations in healthcare came together as the 405(d) Task Group in May 2017, to plan, develop and draft this publication,” wrote HHS Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan in the report. “HHS engaged a diverse group of more than 150 healthcare and cybersecurity experts through the Health Sector Coordinating Council as well as our government partners. The Task Group focused on building a set of voluntary, consensus-based principles and practices to improve cybersecurity in the health sector.”
The documents and a toolkit are:
- Main document examines cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities that affect the healthcare industry. It explores five current threats and presents 10 practices to mitigate those threats.
- Technical Volume 1 discusses these 10 cybersecurity practices for small healthcare organizations.
- Technical Volume 2 discusses these 10 cybersecurity practices for medium and large healthcare organizations.
- Resources and Templates portion includes a variety of cybersecurity resources and templates for end users to reference
This initiative and the documents can be found on the www.phe.gov/405d website.
CHIME, at the request of membership, led the charge to increase congressional awareness about healthcare cybersecurity challenges, and welcomed the inclusion of the healthcare-specific provisions in the Cybersecurity Act of 2015. The provision known as 405(d) directed HHS to establish through a collaborative process with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and any other federal entities and non-federal entities a common set of voluntary, consensus-based, and industry-led guidelines, best practices, methodologies, procedures and processes that:
- Serve as a resource for cost-effectively reducing cybersecurity risks for a range of healthcare organizations;
- Support voluntary adoption and implementation efforts to improve safeguards to address cybersecurity threats; and,
- Are consistent with NIST, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) standards, guidelines and requirements.
In addition to the over 150 participants who provided thought leadership into the development of this document, it was also focus group-tested by over 100 individuals in seven different regions throughout the country. This effort has been a fantastic example of public-private partnerships and what is possible with an inclusive approach, leveraging the expertise of representatives from across the industry, with the backing of the federal government.
I’d like to personally thank my co-chair and all of those who contributed to the dialogue and participated in this important initiative. Task group members are listed here. I look forward to getting your feedback and learning about how your organizations leverage these resources to bolster your cybersecurity posture.

Vocera Introduces New Wearable Smartbadge Purpose-Built for Healthcare
Intelligent device accelerates care with hands-free communication and secure messaging
SAN JOSE, CA – January 7, 2019 – Vocera Communications, Inc. (NYSE:VCRA), a recognized leader in clinical communication and workflow solutions, today announced the launch of a new category of wearable communication devices that enables clinician agility and accelerates patient care. The Vocera Smartbadge combines smartphone usability with the hands-free freedom of the Vocera Badge to redefine healthcare communication – again.
“Vocera has been on a mission to improve the lives of patients, families and care teams for more than 18 years; and based on customer feedback, we have thoughtfully designed a sleek, light-weight, wearable, and intelligent device that will make it even easier for care teams to communicate and collaborate,” said Brent Lang, president and CEO of Vocera. “The new Smartbadge is purpose-built to leverage the full software capability of the expanded Vocera Platform – voice calling, messaging, clinical alerts and alarms, and more – with its larger, touch-screen display.”
The biggest advantage of the new Vocera Smartbadge over earlier versions of the wearable communication device is the size of the 2.4” touchscreen, which enables clinicians to receive and read notifications with more patient context. For example, a nurse who receives a sepsis alert can see the patient room number, plus the patient’s name, age, and vital signs. The larger screen also enables clinicians to view contact lists, as well as read and send text messages right from their Smartbadge.
While the device’s screen is larger than the original Vocera Badge, the new Smartbadge is still small, lightweight, wearable, and ideal for busy clinicians needing their hands free to provide patient care. Improved microphones and speakers enable high-quality audio while communicating with colleagues in both hands-free and hand-set mode. A new, dedicated, one-touch panic button is designed to make it faster and easier for staff to get help in emergency situations. Additionally, the Smartbadge boasts extended battery life, USB charging and headset ports, and a durable and water-resistant design.
“The Vocera Smartbadge is a gamechanger for healthcare and will enhance the way care teams connect, collaborate and provide care to patients,” said Tom Stafford, Vice President and CIO at Halifax Health. “I am impressed by how the Smartbadge is still small and lightweight even with a larger notification screen, which is also now a touchscreen. Vocera really listened to its customers to design this new device that meets all the mobile communication needs of nurses, physicians and other team members.
Clinicians can communicate hands-free, receive contextual patient information, reach the right person by name, role or group, and get help in an emergency with the touch of a button. The Smartbadge will integrate with more than 140 clinical and operational systems, including electronic health records, nurse call systems, physiologic monitors and more. Powered by the Vocera Platform, data is aggregated from most systems used in hospitals today. Patient information, prioritized clinical events, and care team availability can be presented on the Smartbadge. The intuitive mobile device will help increase workflow efficiencies, reduce interruption fatigue, and improve patient care and experience.
Additionally, the Vocera software platform now has unique capabilities designed specifically to support the well-being of healthcare workers. During times of high stress or emotional exhaustion, care team members can use the Smartbadge to “call a Code Lavender.” This simple voice command will send an alert to members of a multi-disciplinary group that will quickly respond, offering physical, spiritual and emotional support to patients, families and staff in need. For overwhelmed care team members who need a brief moment to relax or return to purpose, three guided meditations are available on the new mobile device.
About Vocera
The mission of Vocera Communications, Inc. is to simplify and improve the lives of healthcare professionals and patients, while enabling hospitals to enhance quality of care and operational efficiency. In 2000, when the company was founded, we began to forever change the way care teams communicate. Today, Vocera continues to offer the leading platform for clinical communication and workflow. More than 1,700 facilities worldwide, including nearly 1,500 hospitals and healthcare facilities, have selected our solutions for team members to text securely using smartphones or make calls with our hands-free, wearable Vocera Badge. Interoperability between Vocera and more than 140 clinical and operational systems helps reduce alarm fatigue, speed up staff response times, and improve patient care, safety and experience. In addition to healthcare, Vocera is at home in luxury hotels, aged care facilities, nuclear facilities, libraries, retail stores and more.
