DrFirst Launches California’s First-ever Integrated Technology to Tackle the Opioid Epidemic Across the Healthcare Continuum
Solution enables easy access to state database via MEDITECH EHR to identify opioid ‘doctor shopping’ and reduce overall drug abuse
ROCKVILLE, MD — February 7, 2019 — DrFirst, the nation’s leading provider of e-prescribing and patient medication management solutions, announced today the availability of an integrated solution with the MEDITECH Enterprise Health Record (EHR) that seamlessly connects prescribers to California’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP). For the first time ever, in-workflow access to the PDMP, known as Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES 2.0) is available to MEDITECH and DrFirst mutual customers using the MEDITECH Acute, Ambulatory, and ED solutions in the 6.15 or Expanse platforms.
This new CURES 2.0 integration is critical because it gives clinicians streamlined, real-time access to essential opioid prescription information for individual patients at the point-of-care. Prescribers using DrFirst’s e-prescribing tools within the MEDITECH EHR can quickly check the CURES 2.0 database to view their patients’ opioid prescription history, allowing them to quickly identify patients who may have substance abuse disorders and are “doctor shopping” for prescriptions of controlled substances.
Prescribers do not need to log into CURES 2.0 from a separate browser because patient queries are initiated from within the e-prescribing workflow. Prescription records are returned directly within the EHR automatically once physician credentials are validated in the state’s PDMP.
“As the first vendors to offer acute care providers access to CURES 2.0 within e-prescribing workflows, DrFirst and MEDITECH are demonstrating our strong commitment to tackling the country’s opioid crisis, as well as our leadership in the development of innovative solutions that advance patient safety and empower physicians,” said G. Cameron Deemer, President of DrFirst. “We value our close relationship with MEDITECH; our teams share a passion for delivering technology solutions that improve patient care, increase physician efficiencies and help prescribers make clinically sound medication management decisions.”
DrFirst and MEDITECH are long-time collaborators with a history of initiatives that advance e-prescribing and medication management for MEDITECH EHR clients. In addition to this critical work in California, DrFirst and MEDITECH offer similar integrations with PDMPs in 37 other states across the country. MEDITECH EHR customer Salinas Valley Memorial Health System is the first hospital scheduled to go live with the integrated CURES 2.0 solution.
“Physicians want to do what’s best for their patients and, as technology providers, we have the privilege of helping them deliver care more safely and efficiently,” said Howard Messing, President and CEO of MEDITECH. “We are confident that, by giving physicians ready-access to in-depth details of patients’ past prescriptions through the integration between MEDITECH and the CURES 2.0 PDMP, physicians will be able to make a meaningful difference in addressing California’s opioid crisis.”
“The integration between MEDITECH and the state’s PDMP will give our physicians an efficient solution that will ensure the utmost safety when prescribing controlled substances through the DrFirst e-prescribing interface,” said David Kasting, MD, CMIO for Salinas Valley Memorial Health System. “We look forward to bringing this solution to our providers and taking our next step to continually ensure the safety of all of our patients, including those who may be in need of substance abuse treatment.”
The CURES 2.0 database includes prescriptions of Schedule II, III and IV controlled substances dispensed in California. As of October 2, 2018, with specified exceptions, health care practitioners authorized to prescribe, order, administer, or furnish a controlled substance were required by California law to consult the CURES database. Practitioners must review a patient’s controlled substance history before prescribing Schedule II, III and IV drugs to a patient for the first time, and at least once every four months after that if the substance remains part of the treatment of the patient. In 2016, over 2,000 individuals died from opioid-related overdoses in California and more than 42,000 across the country.

Health Catalyst Secures up to $100 Million with Financing Led By OrbiMed
Financing round which includes new and existing investors follows record growth in 2018
Silicon Slopes, UT – February 7, 2019 – Health Catalyst®, Inc., a leader in next-generation data, analytics and improvement, announced the closing of a Series F equity and debt funding round led by OrbiMed, a leading healthcare public and private market investment firm. This equity and debt funding will provide Health Catalyst with access to up to $100 million in capital. Several existing investors including Sequoia Capital, Norwest Venture Partners, Sands Capital Ventures, UPMC Enterprises and Kaiser Permanente Ventures also contributed to the financing, which lifts Health Catalyst’s value above $1 billion.
Proceeds from the financing will support continued expansion of Health Catalyst’s technology and services offerings for healthcare transformation. The company is on a mission to unleash data as a catalyst for massive, sustained clinical, financial and operational improvements in the performance of healthcare organizations. In support of that mission, the Health Catalyst Data Operating System (DOS™) is the foundation upon which the company has built an expanding library of analytics applications, supported by world-class services.
“As more healthcare organizations are coming to understand, the future of healthcare will rely on the broad and more effective use of their vast stores of data,” said Health Catalyst CEO Dan Burton. “This additional capital will enable us to continue developing the technology and expertise necessary to offer health systems a path to systematically use data to analyze their performance, and then work to make measurable improvement in clinical, financial and operational areas. It will also help to support our expansion, already underway, into the life sciences and international markets.”
2018: A Breakthrough Year
The market’s rising valuation of Health Catalyst as a leader in data, analytics and improvement was secured through the company’s strong performance in 2018. During the year, Health Catalyst experienced over 65% growth in its annual recurring revenue, over 50% growth in revenues, and over 80% growth in its gross profits. The company also added sixteen new health system customers in 2018, more than in any previous year in the company’s 10-year history. Health Catalyst also added over 200 team members in 2018, to end the year with nearly 750 team members throughout the US. Also during the year, Health Catalyst’s customers realized over 250 documented clinical, financial and operational improvements, by far the most of any year in the company’s history.
The company’s strong business performance in 2018 was mirrored by the high ratings it received from industry analysts, whose findings were based on surveys of Health Catalyst customers. Industry bellwether KLAS Research awarded Health Catalyst its “Best in KLAS” ranking for Business Intelligence, marking the second year in a row that Health Catalyst has been recognized by KLAS as the top-performing solution in the category for its ability to help turn raw data into clear insights that drive improved clinical, financial and operational performance. KLAS also named Health Catalyst to its exclusive “A-List” of Healthcare IT companies that combine high customer satisfaction with high rates of customer retention, in its April 2018 report, Decision Insights 2018: National Trends & Best Practices. And in December, KLAS ranked Health Catalyst second overall in its report on population health management vendors, Population Health Management 2018, Part 1.
On the product development front, Health Catalyst released several new applications in 2018 including Touchstone™, a breakthrough analytics application featuring next-generation benchmarking and prioritization capabilities powered by Artificial Intelligence to supercharge healthcare improvement initiatives; and the Patient Safety Monitor™ Suite: Surveillance Module, the industry’s first comprehensive patient safety application to use predictive and text analytics combined with concurrent clinician review of data to monitor, detect, predict and prevent threats to patient safety before harm can occur.
The year also saw Health Catalyst add significant new capabilities, talent and customers with its acquisition of Medicity, one of the nation’s largest population health management companies with solutions for health information exchange (HIE), business intelligence, and provider and patient engagement. Medicity added to the Health Catalyst customer base more than 50 clients, including state and regional HIEs, large employers, health plans, health systems and providers in physician groups and extended care facilities. The combination is empowering connected communities with the insights required to improve healthcare outcomes, control costs, and advance population health management.
Long recognized as a “best place to work” by top healthcare and technology publications, Health Catalyst continued to add to its world-class leadership team in 2018 with several significant new hires. These included William Caldwell, M.D., former Senior Vice President of Clinical Integration at Novant Health; Jason Jones, formerly a senior analytics leader at Kaiser Permanente; Cathy R. Menkiena, former Senior Director of EHR Solutions at Encore Health Resources, an emids company; Ryan Smith, former Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Banner Health; Elia Stupka, formerly a bioinformatics leader at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Director of Computational Biology and Genomics at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma; and Steven Vance, former regional Chief Financial Officer and Compliance Officer at Intermountain Healthcare.

Redox To Power EHR Integration in Microsoft Teams Through FHIR
Facilitates care collaboration of patient data to ease communication among clinicians, improve patient outcomes
MADISON, WI – February 7, 2019 – Redox today announced that it is integrating with Microsoft Teams to enable secure, bidirectional data exchange with electronic health record (EHR) software at provider organizations using the FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard. As a result, clinicians and caregivers can easily communicate patient data on the Microsoft Teams platform and record information at the EHR level. Redox streamlines the adoption of Microsoft Teams by provider organizations with minimal IT resources.
How it Works
Redox makes it possible for Microsoft Teams to exchange data with FHIR by allowing organizations that use Teams to configure and receive data in a single, consistent FHIR format. Where FHIR is not currently available or in use, Redox connects to existing HL7v2 interfaces or EHR vendor APIs and transforms that data into a FHIR messaging format. All data sent back into an EHR is consumed by Teams in FHIR standards and then translated into the necessary format depending on what the provider’s current EHR is capable of accepting. This collaboration helps play a key role in ensuring patient data is available, comprehensive and easily exchanged among clinician teams.“The advent of Microsoft Teams illustrates the tremendous change in how people and teams in all industries get work done, and healthcare is no exception,” said Niko Skievaski, co-founder and president, Redox. “Yet, most provider organizations are running a very lean IT team and are not well equipped to rapidly implement new technologies. Redox simplifies integration to a single connection and data format. An integration powered by Redox represents reusable infrastructure already in place at 450 healthcare organizations.”
Mike Ammerlaan, director, Microsoft Office 365 Ecosystem, Microsoft Corp. added, “Working with leading healthcare interoperability suppliers, such as Redox, we are bringing Microsoft’s capabilities to healthcare providers as they adopt the cloud. Powered by Redox, providers can view electronic healthcare data in Microsoft Teams. This enables clinicians to facilitate communication about patient care in real-time within Teams’ secure platform and to help improve care outcomes.”
About Redox
Redox accelerates the development and distribution of healthcare software solutions with a full-service integration platform to securely and efficiently exchange data. Healthcare delivery organizations and technology vendors connect once and authorize the data they send and receive across the most extensive interoperable network in healthcare. Redox exists to make healthcare data useful and every patient experience a little bit better. Learn how you can leverage the Redox Platform at www.redoxengine.com.Media Contact

A Patent Lawyer with a Passion for innovation: Meet Jonathan Fritz
2.7.2018
Jonathan Fritz – Executive Director, CHIME InnovationI expected to follow the footsteps of my dentist father and nurse mother and be a clinician. Then one day in genetics class a guest speaker – a patent attorney – encouraged us to consider a career in patent law. To protect innovative technologies, he said, the profession needed people with science and technology backgrounds. After that, it was law school and not dental school for me.
My career has taken many interesting turns, from working in-house at Unisys, a large computer corporation, to being a patent attorney and partner in several law firms, to co-founder of a startup, to the chief strategy officer and director of new ventures at Symphony Corporation. While practicing law, I received my master’s degree in bioinformatics from the Medical College of Wisconsin and was able to protect inventions from the world’s largest research universities and startups alike. Through Symphony’s affiliation as a CHIME Foundation firm, I had the opportunity to meet many CHIME members as well as the team at CHIME. And on the first of this year, I became part of that team as the executive director of CHIME Innovation.
CHIME Innovation is a global healthcare innovation initiative that includes innovation-specific education, innovation facilitation and physical centers and labs designed around collaboratively solving healthcare problems. Educational events will be available remotely as well as in our new facility, the Intermountain and CHIME Innovation Center powered by Sirius, in Murray, Utah.
Our first workshop, “Developing an Innovation Framework,” will be March 17-18 in Murray. More information about the workshop is available here.
Those attending HIMSS19 in Orlando, Fla., can learn more about CHIME Innovation by visiting the CHIME booth in West C Lobby at 2:30-3:30 p.m. Feb. 12 during HIMSS19. We will provide a CHIME Innovation summary and update. I also will be available Feb. 10-11 during the CHIME HIMSS CIO Forum in Orlando to talk about our goals and how members and Foundation firms can get involved.
We will share more details about CHIME Innovation soon. If you have any questions or thoughts about the initiative, please email me at [email protected].

Nuance Brings Virtual Assistant Technology to 300,000 Dragon Medical One Cloud Users
According to new survey results, 81% of physicians believe virtual assistants in healthcare would reduce the burden on care teams and improve the patient experience
BURLINGTON, MA – February 5, 2019 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that it will introduce its voice-enabled virtual assistant to all users of Dragon Medical One, the company’s cloud-based clinical documentation platform. With this launch, Nuance will bring the strength of its trusted artificial intelligence (AI) technology, already used by leading brands such as FedEx, BMW and Citizens Bank, to approximately 300,000 healthcare providers across the country. This rollout comes in tandem with, and is supported by, the release of industry survey data that underscores clinicians’ daily battle to overcome administrative burdens and bring joy back to medicine.
Nuance’s virtual assistant technology, which has been used as the core of electronic health record (EHR) workflows at organizations such as Vanderbilt University Medical Center, is proven to not only reduce administrative burden on care teams, but to improve both provider and patient exam room experiences. Nuance’s virtual assistant technology automates high-value clinical tasks and intelligent retrieval of information from the medical record, as well as the interaction, with specialized content to bring in-workflow knowledge to the point of care.
“At Vanderbilt, we believe that innovation in virtual assistants is essential to humanizing technology, enhancing the delivery of care and helping providers focus on their patients,” said Dr. Yaa Kumah-Crystal, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Pediatric Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. “With Nuance’s virtual assistant technology we can empower our providers to feel more connected to their work and have seen quantifiable time savings. We have finally arrived at a place where technology has parity with human recognition.”
Industry survey data spanning over 200 respondents across physician, nurse, and C-suite healthcare leadership roles (CMIO, CMO, and CIO) shows that 8 out of 10 agree that introducing a clinically-oriented, AI- and voice-driven virtual assistant into the EHR and exam room workflow will:
- Reduce the burden on care teams and improve the patient experience;
- Allow clinicians to spend more time with patients;
- Make it more convenient to login into healthcare applications versus using a keyboard;
- Ease the burden of accessing information in the EHR; and,
- Reduce the time spent documenting care
Likewise, respondents identified the following administrative tasks as benefiting most from a virtual assistant:
- Chart search (88%)
- Documentation and patient summaries (85%)
- EHR navigation (82%)
- Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) (78%)
- Task management (76%)
- Scheduling (75%)
“By providing approximately 300,000 clinicians around the country access to this technology through Dragon Medical One, care teams will no longer need to grapple with the burdens of documentation and information retrieval, allowing them to be fully present with their patients,” said Michael Clark, General Manager of Provider Solutions, Nuance. “Tasks that once took minutes will be reduced down to seconds. And, as we experience in our daily lives, a voice-driven experience in healthcare is now just a voice command away.”
Dragon Medical One, a HITRUST CSF certified solution, is completely cloud-based and seamlessly integrated into existing workflows so users can count on consistent documentation experiences regardless of their location. Dragon Medical is trusted by more than 500,000 clinicians worldwide and used within 90 percent of U.S. hospitals.

Billings Clinic Selects Health Catalyst for Population Health, Outcomes-improvement Initiatives
Data Operating System delivers actionable insights to improve outcomes and enhance care coordination
SALT LAKE CITY, UT and BILLINGS, MT – February 5, 2019 – Billings Clinic, Montana’s largest healthcare organization, has partnered with Health Catalyst, Inc. a leader in next-generation data, analytics, and decision support, to power its population health and outcomes-improvement programs. Billings Clinic is implementing the Health Catalyst Data Operating System (DOS™) to centralize its data analytics operations, eliminate data siloes among existing systems, enhance quality measurement and improve patient outcomes.
Billings Clinic is a physician-led, integrated multispecialty group practice with a 304-bed hospital and a Level II trauma center. Billings Clinic was the first Montana Magnet® -designated healthcare organization for nursing excellence and is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. Billings Clinic also manages 11 critical access hospitals and various partnerships across a vast region covering much of Montana, northern Wyoming and the western Dakotas.
“At Billings Clinic, we recognize that data, and advanced capabilities to analyze and visualize that data, is at the core of everything we want to accomplish in the future,” said Randy Thompson, MD, Chief Medical Information Officer for Billings Clinic. “We need reliable, accurate data to understand exactly where we are today and to realize what we need to achieve going forward. With Health Catalyst, I am confident that we have found a partner that has the knowledge and experience to help us optimize our use of data to improve outcomes for patients across our region.”
Billings Clinic will adopt DOS, a data-first, analytics and application platform that transforms raw data from virtually any data source into Deep Data—data that is meaningful, actionable, and provides actual business value at a lower cost. DOS accomplishes this by integrating and analyzing critical data from over 200 of the most widely-used data sources, and delivering real-time decision support within the existing workflows of clinicians, administrators and other healthcare professionals.
Overcoming the challenges of Frontier Healthcare
Due to the vast distances separating many patients from clinicians in rural Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas, Billings Clinic faces challenges unique to its environment. To better serve as a provider of “Frontier Healthcare,” Billings Clinic has established affiliations with a number of critical access hospitals in the region. Using DOS, Billings Clinic will improve care coordination with these partners by sharing access to not only electronic health records (EHR) data, but quality and outcomes measures.
“For Frontier Healthcare organizations such as Billings Clinic that provide care across vast networks, it is critical to harness the best available data to improve care coordination,” said Dan Burton, CEO of Health Catalyst. “Health Catalyst has a proven track record of helping our partners leverage accurate and reliable enterprise-level data to improve patient care and outcomes. We are honored with Billings Clinic’s trust in Health Catalyst and believe that, with their forward-thinking strategies for care and analytics, both organizations will benefit from our meaningful partnership.”
Under the agreement, Health Catalyst will provide professional services focused on optimizing population health and enterprise outcomes improvements. Billings Clinic also will have access to Health Catalyst’s full library of technology solutions and content culled from the company’s outcomes-improvement work with health systems across the country. Health Catalyst applications built on the DOS platform address the most pressing concerns of healthcare organizations, including managing population health; gaining a comprehensive view of the true cost of care; empowering executive decision support with a dashboard view of enterprise-wide performance; benchmarking and prioritizing improvement opportunities; and monitoring, detecting, predicting and preventing threats to patient safety, before harm can occur.
