CHIME Foundation Partner Education Summit Offers Advanced Content for Senior Executives
8.20.2019
By Carina Edwards, CEO at Quil
Four years into an educational event offered exclusively for CHIME Foundation partners, the CHIME Foundation Partner Education Summit (CPES) Planning Committee has decided to increase the depth and specialization of education at this year’s summit. Ensuring we serve the education needs for our Foundation members is our core focus, and our 2019 agenda brings new content and innovative delivery styles to deliver on our goal.
CHIME Foundation Partner Education Summit (CPES) is designed to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of representatives, from sales and marketing professionals to senior executives who want to stay at the top of their game. Based on feedback from past attendees, the planning committee revised the CPES format to offer more advanced content. Three new tracks were created for CPES this year to allow dedicated content for each group: leaders in sales, marketing, and customer success. We also added a site visit to Rush University Medical Center for a select group and a “Healthcare 101” pre-plenary session ahead of the opening reception for those who are newer to healthcare.
The faculty include some of the top CIOs in the U.S. and industry leaders who will discuss the latest developments in healthcare. They will address the rapidly changing healthcare landscape and what that means for providers and their health IT teams. This is a rare opportunity to learn what is on the minds of the C-suite in hospitals and health systems and how to best partner with them.
We also have breakout sessions that allow attendees to tailor the programming to their needs and interests, with a block tied to domains within the CHIME Foundation Certified Healthcare Executive (CFCHE) credential. Those with interest will have an opportunity to take the CFCHE exam on Friday afternoon after the program concludes. Foundation partners who already have earned their CFCHE will receive up to 15 CEUs for attending CPES19.
Please join us Sept. 4-6 in Chicago for CPES19, held at the Loews Chicago O’Hare hotel. More information about CPES19 is available here. If you have any questions, please email the Foundation team at [email protected].

Foundation Partners Now Have the Opportunity to Be Involved with CHIME Innovation
8.20.2019
By Jonathan Fritz, JD, MS, CFCHE, Executive Director, CHIME Innovation
Many healthcare IT organizations view education as critical to success and see innovation as a driver of growth. CHIME also has made education and innovation pillars of the organization. It is part of the CHIME mission statement to serve healthcare leaders through “utilization of knowledge and technology” in order to transform the healthcare IT industry. This is the purpose of CHIME Innovation.
CHIME Innovation is a global healthcare initiative of CHIME that provides innovation-specific education, facilitation and physical locations for healthcare executives to collaboratively solve current and future challenges. CHIME Innovation creates an environment that allows leaders to devise a plan for innovation, return to their respective organizations and implement that plan. Our first collaborative Innovation Center was launched in Utah with the partnership of Intermountain Healthcare.
CHIME Innovation has successfully launched multiple Innovation Executive Series using our facility in Utah and we now are preparing for the CI²O Innovation Summit on Sept. 19-20 in Chicago. This is a new annual innovation facilitation event that will focus on the intersection between senior information executives and senior innovation executives. CI²O will include a small number of senior–level sponsor executives as participants to join in discussions under the theme “Leading the Digital Health Ecosystem.” All attendees, including sponsor executives, will have the opportunity to actively participate in ‘fishbowl panels’ during CI²O, and thought leadership work groups following the CI²O. This is a unique opportunity for thought leadership and industry engagement.
There are now multiple opportunities to partner with CHIME Innovation to help transform health and care around the globe. CHIME Foundation partners also can exclusively sponsor the upcoming Innovation Executive series on January 23-24, with the opportunity to attend and collaborate on real solutions to real problems. In partnering with CHIME Innovation, Foundation partners can contribute to the innovation that takes place during these events.
In addition to the upcoming events, we’re excited to hear from our Foundation partners on how CHIME Innovation can serve their needs. Any input or suggestions can be provided directly to Jonathan or the respective account directors. All input and feedback are welcomed!
Please contact your account directors for more information and details about CI²O and the next Executive Series.

Boot Camp Will Give CISOs Skills and Tools to Be Effective Leaders
8.8.2019
By Theresa Meadows, Senior VP and CIO, Cook Children’s Health Care SystemWill Long, VP and CISO at Children’s Health
Healthcare security is often framed in terms of vulnerabilities and the potential consequences of a breach. Yet the most effective security leaders talk less about risk and more about risk management, and in a business context the C-suite and board can understand. But how to make that leap?
This fall, CHIME and AEHIS will offer a boot camp dedicated to chief information security officers who aspire to be at the pinnacle of their profession. As two of the Healthcare CISO Boot Camp faculty members, we are honored to be part of a program that is designed to elevate the role of security executives and help participants grow as leaders. The new CISO boot camp is modeled after the CHIME Healthcare CIO Boot Camp™ but will focus on security leadership. We will be joined by many prominent healthcare security executives who will share insights and lessons learned.
Security is playing an increasingly critical role in healthcare as we transition to a digital healthcare system. Many security programs have grown from IT departments and over the years they have developed strong technical expertise. But without the leadership skills and strategies for navigating the C-suite, their executive teams may struggle to successfully drive change in their organizations. The Healthcare CISO Boot Camp addresses that challenge.
For instance, team building and networking for CISOs will include identifying, recruiting and retaining talent and also identifying and partnering with leaders in your organization to help your team be most effective. The faculty will discuss how to approach risk management from a business perspective that aligns with your C-suite and board. Like the CIO boot camp, we will offer case studies, exercises, discussions and networking but with an emphasis on security.
We expect everyone who attends – including us – to take back at least one idea or strategy that can be implemented immediately into their healthcare organization’s security program. Participants can expect to walk away with lifelong friends and mentors plus a network to rely on throughout their careers.
The Healthcare CISO Boot Camp will be Nov. 6-9 in Phoenix, immediately following the AEHIS Fall Summit and the CHIME Fall CIO Forum, which will be held simultaneously in Phoenix. Members of CHIME, AEHIS, AEHIA and AEHIT as well as their direct reports are eligible to attend. Scholarships are available with an application deadline of Aug. 16.
If you’d like to learn more or register to be among the first alumni of the CISO boot camp, go here. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

CHIME and AEHIS Unveil Certification Program for Security Leaders

CHIME and AEHIS Unveil Certification Program for Security Leaders
8.8.2019
By Brad Marsh, BSN, RN, CEN, CHCIO, Inpatient Nursing Information Officer, Madigan Army Medical CenterToby Gouker, PhD, GSLC, CISM, Vice President of Strategy, First Healthcare Advisory Solutions
In the 2017 Healthcare Industry Cybersecurity Task Force report to Congress, thought leaders identified the difficulty “to ensure workforce competencies due to the number of certification programs that are not all tailored to the health care environment.” (p. 36) Years ago, CHIME identified this same concern within the CIO role. There were CIOs but those who could manage the complexities of navigating patient safety and productivity were hard to identify. Enter the CHIME Certified Healthcare CIO (CHCIO). Since the minting of the first CHCIO, this program has become a method to identify those professionals who can perform the role of a CIO in the dynamic environment of healthcare. Once again, CHIME rises to the challenge.
This November CHIME and AEHIS will offer the first Certified Healthcare Information Security Leader (CHISL) certification exam. This exam utilizes the template of the CHCIO domains and the core principles of CHIME and AEHIS. A committee consisting of cybersecurity professionals and clinical and strategic leaders, co-chaired by the two of us, developed the exam. The exam focuses not on the tactical anti-intrusion, intrusion detection, or firewall configurations. Rather, it focuses on testing a professional’s ability to navigate the interpersonal communications required to align both internal and external stakeholders required to enable the technical aspects of cybersecurity to support strategic mission of a healthcare organization.
As the vision statement recognizes, “the CHISL is a Communicator both externally and internally to the organization. They lead networks of people managing the protection of networks on which the healthcare industry depends to deliver safe and efficient care. Each CHISL contributes to the overall protection of the Healthcare Infrastructure.”
In leading this charge, we wanted to ensure that the CHISL committee was focused on developing an examination that would identify cybersecurity professionals with a unique combination of strategic focus, healthcare experience and technical acumen. We guided the discussion and implementation of standards to lead the strategic focus and are pleased to report that the exam looks at a leader’s ability to apply a uniform approach to security. With so many different stakeholders involved in a healthcare setting, having a standards-based approach to security helps a CISO align all parts of the organization.
The committee met in-person at CHIME headquarters in Ann Arbor, Mich., in July for an intense training and development of the CHISL exam. The group worked extensively on developing a sound and robust exam that will undoubtedly measure a candidate’s understanding and experience in the healthcare security industry. Details surrounding candidate eligibility and requirements can be found on the CHISL Certification page.
Each CHISL will lead the security efforts and vision for their hospital/health system. Each hospital and system that a CHISL protects, contributes to the health and security of the healthcare sector, which directly impacts the security of the nation. CHIME stands ready to demonstrate leadership in the face of rising threats to our security.
Enrollment is now open; demonstrate your commitment to healthcare cybersecurity by earning your CHISL designation. Your journey starts here.

Healthcare Security Executives Get New Credential, Educational Program through AEHIS
ANN ARBOR, MI, Aug. 7, 2019 – The Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Security (AEHIS) has launched two new initiatives to help IT security executives excel in their careers and maintain the highest standards. Beginning this September, AEHIS will offer a new credential that recognizes executives who demonstrate forward-thinking leadership with technical proficiency and tactical knowledge in healthcare security. In addition, AEHIS and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) will kick off a new educational program in November designed to give chief information security officers (CISOs) and others the real-world skills they need to succeed in their positions. The AEHIS certification and Healthcare CISO Boot Camp are two separate opportunities to capitalize on a member’s professional development provided by CHIME and AEHIS.The Certified Healthcare Information Security Leader (CHISL) credential is modeled after the CHIME Certified Healthcare CIO (CHCIO), the first certification program exclusively for CIOs. To earn the CHISL designation, a security executive will need to pass an exam that tests his or her knowledge of seven domains: organizational vision and strategy, technology proficiency, change management, value assessment and management, service management, talent management and management of security relationships. Those leaders seeking the CHISL credential will also need to demonstrate three years of healthcare security leadership experience. Once enrolled in the credential program, participants will have access to exam study materials and the option of in-person or remote testing.CHIME and AEHIS will conduct the first-ever Healthcare CISO Boot Camp on Nov. 6-9 in Phoenix. The Healthcare CISO Boot Camp will apply an interactive format developed under the popular CHIME Healthcare CIO Boot Camp™ with a focus on security leadership. The three-and-a-half-day educational event will be taught by a faculty of healthcare security leaders and will include success factors, case studies, panel Q&As and networking opportunities. The boot camp will kick off directly after the AEHIS Fall Summit in Phoenix.“AEHIS has grown substantially since its launch in 2014,” said Will Long, chair of the AEHIS Board and vice president and CISO at Children’s Health in Dallas. “In that time, CISOs and other senior security executives have taken on more responsibilities and now are vital to protecting the safety and privacy of patients. The CHISL certification will allow our members to test their knowledge and distinguish themselves as leaders while the CISO boot camp will provide the skills and tools they need to thrive in today’s complex healthcare environment. Both are valuable resources for our community.”The Healthcare CISO Boot Camp is open to members of CHIME, AEHIS or CHIME’s two other affiliates, the Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Applications (AEHIA) and the Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Technology (AEHIT), and their direct reports. Attendance is limited. DrFirst Integrates Mobile Device Access to Enable Fast, Seamless Single Sign-On to Backline® to Take the Friction Out of Care Collaboration
Launch marks the latest joint effort between DrFirst, Imprivata, and Forward Advantage to improve the healthcare experience for providers and patients
ROCKVILLE, MD – August 7, 2019 — DrFirst announced today their collaboration to deliver single sign-on (SSO) access to HIPAA compliant messaging is now available. Using DrFirst Backline and Imprivata Mobile Device Access to enable fast, secure access to shared mobile devices and applications, users can now securely communicate in real-time across care team members and patients without the burden of manual logins to access Backline.
“By enabling SSO workflows on mobile devices, healthcare organizations can unlock the full potential of these devices, and their applications, by ensuring a fast, efficient workflow for clinicians, while maintaining and improving security and auditability,” said Dr. Sean Kelly, chief medical officer at Imprivata. “Imprivata Mobile Device Access delivers real ROI to healthcare organizations because it helps them optimize their investments in mobile hardware without compromising the security of PHI or usability and accessibility for clinicians.”
Researchers have found that single sign-on improves productivity among providers, increases HIPAA compliance, decreases errors, and significantly reduces workflow disruptions. Research has shown that SSO reduced the time it took clinicians to access electronic medical records and other data by 45 minutes per shift. Another study found that the capability helped eliminate password-related IT help desk requests, which can minimize care delays and decrease costs.
One such healthcare organization benefiting from SSO for Backline is King’s Daughters Health System in Brookhaven, MS. “We place a high emphasis on physician satisfaction and optimizing workflows throughout our facilities,” said Carl Smith, chief information officer at King’s Daughters. “When considering a partner to enhance our secure messaging capabilities, it was clear that DrFirst provided a robust solution that would meet our needs and empower all stakeholders across the care continuum. We are elated that this partnership is making such a difference within our organization while furthering our mission to provide great healthcare to our community.”
The new SSO capability is an extension of the collaboration announced in 2018 between:
- DrFirst, the nation’s leading provider of e-prescribing, price transparency, and medication management solution
- Imprivata, the healthcare IT security company
- and Forward Advantage, a global provider of healthcare IT solutions that improve clinical workflows and patient outcomes.
Users will be able to access Backline seamlessly on shared clinical or personal mobile devices to communicate with colleagues, patients, and even caregivers, without needing to remember or enter another login ID.
“Physicians and other providers have to log in and out of multiple applications and platforms all day long, adding to their administrative burden and frustration while distracting from patient care,” said G. Cameron Deemer, president of DrFirst. “We are constantly looking for opportunities to remove obstacles in the clinical workflow and allow medical staff to be more effective and efficient. Our research shows clinicians and patients prefer to receive messages by text. By integrating with Imprivata Mobile Device Access to enable SSO into Backline, we have made it easier for customers to optimize the use of secure communication in the delivery of care.”
