Northwell Health launches LabFly in Manhattan, Queens, first health system app to facilitate blood draws at home or work

NEW HYDE PARK, NY – Northwell Health Labs, a division of Northwell Health, the largest health system in the Northeast, has launched LabFly, a mobile app that allows patients to schedule blood draws in the privacy of their home or workplace. This “concierge health care” app is the first of its kind in the nation to be released by a health system and is available now across Manhattan and Queens. It offers patients a convenient and private alternative to having their blood taken at a traditional Patient Service Center.
The LabFly app is available for download via Apple’s iTunes store and Google Play for Android users. Users simply enter their demographic information, take a photo of their insurance card and paper prescription, then choose a day and time slot to schedule a home or private office visit from one of over 150 Northwell Health’s lab experts. Caregivers can also schedule a blood draw for someone they are caring for. On the day of the appointment, a patient can view the location of the lab expert in similar fashion to popular ride-sharing apps. Patients can securely access their test results via the app within approximately four days.
The need for lab testing is not only high in the Northeast, but across the country. Laboratory testing is the single highest volume medical activity, with about 13 billion tests performed in the United States every year, according to lab accreditation bureau COLA. Industry studies indicate that approximately 70 percent of medical decisions are based on lab results, yet many patients who have prescriptions for lab work never get them filled.
To meet that demand, Northwell opened a $59 million, 101,000-square-foot core lab in Nassau County with the largest automated testing line of its kind and a $47 million, 36,000- square-foot microbiology lab in Queens – all since February.
“The LabFly app is another way to connect our patients to the great services Northwell Health Labs provides,” said Michael J. Dowling, Northwell Health president and chief executive officer. “In the past few months, we’ve built a number of state-of-the-art labs that allows us to do more testing and make our labs a leader in the tristate area. We look forward to continuing this expansion of our labs through LabFly and other future technologies.”
The fee for lab testing is covered by most patient’s insurers. There is a convenience fee of $19.99, which includes transportation and sample collection. Northwell Health Labs is offering an introductory discount: First draw is 25 percent off* with the code “LabFly2019.” In most instances, the convenience fee will not be covered by insurance.
“We are happy to launch this state-of-the-art app that allows our patients to schedule personalized, professional blood draws with ease,” said Dwayne Breining, MD, Northwell Health Labs executive director. “At Northwell Health Labs, our goal is to bring innovative ideas to the table. This app is a new way to give our patients access to the quality experience they would receive at one of our patient service centers, but in their living room or place of work. Whether it’s young children who are anxious about a blood draw, busy professionals or someone you’re caring for, this app is a convenient way to help fulfill our patients’ needs.”
LabFly by Northwell Health Labs has been developed in partnership with Software company MphRx and is based on its Minerva platform. This is a great example of how Northwell Health Labs is using the new FHIR healthcare standard to build innovative and engaging experiences for their patients.
The app is being released in four geographic phases. The first phase is operational now across Long Island, Manhattan and Queens. The next phases are expected to launch to Brooklyn and Staten Island, followed by the Bronx and Westchester. LabFly is expected to be live in all regions by the end of 2019.
* Limited time offer: promo code must be entered to receive the discount off your first blood draw. Discount is applied to the convenience fee only. Valid through March 31, 2020. If you are homebound, the fees for having a home blood draw may be covered by your insurer. If you have any questions, please contact us at 516 719-1082.

CHIME19 Keynote Eric Topol: Bringing the Care Back to Healthcare
10.30.19
By Candace Stuart, Director, Communications & Public Relations
When some visionaries look at the potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare, they point to improved processes. But the author of Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again sees liberated people.
“Deep Medicine took three years of research,” said Eric Topol, MD, who is scheduled to give the closing keynote at the CHIME Fall CIO Forum in Phoenix on Nov. 6. “When I went into it, it as with the idea that we have a new way to work with data, massive data, that exceeds human capabilities. The eureka moment was the realization that everyone is talking about improving accuracy, improving speed, potentially lowering costs, improving workflow and productivity. It hit me that that’s all nice but what we really need is to improve the human side of healthcare, the care.”
Topol has an uncanny ability to identify the next wave in healthcare innovation. Author of The Creative Destruction of Medicine and The Patient Will See You Now, he had been forecasting the direction of digital healthcare and describing a future where healthcare is transformed. He sees technologies like smartphones giving patients more autonomy and AI freeing physicians by pushing the technology to the background through opportunities like “getting rid of keyboards, the common enemy of patients and doctors.” Making the environment less about the technology “frees up doctors to do what they want to do, which is connecting to patients. AI can get us the gift of time.”
Topol is a cardiologist, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, executive vice president of Scripps Research and professor of Molecular Medicine. He is one of the leading innovators in medicine today, specializing in the use of artificial intelligence, “deep” data and smart technology in the practice of individualized medicine.
This will be Topol’s second appearance as a keynote speaker at a CHIME fall forum. In 2012, he addressed members in Indian Wells, Calif.
This year’s forum will take place Nov. 3-6 in Phoenix. To learn more about the full program, go here. Registration is open and available here.

CI2O Innovation Summit Brings Visionaries Together to Explore Healthcare’s Future
10.30.19
By Candace Stuart, Director, Communications & Public Relations
What is innovation, how does it intersect with information technology, and how does it apply to healthcare? Those questions and more were explored recently at the CI2O Innovation Summit in Chicago. The event brought C-suite executives from healthcare organizations and industry together with a policymaker, a venture capitalist and innovation thought leaders to exchange ideas in a free-flowing format that gave every participant a voice.
Vijay Govindarajan, a distinguished professor at Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business and an innovation visionary, helped frame the issue with the first of two keynote addresses. Author of Reverse Innovation in Health Care: How to Make Value-based Delivery Work and The Three Box Solution: A Strategy for Leading Innovation, he said he first became interested in innovation when growing up in an impoverished part of India. “We had lots of problems but few resources,” he said. “The only way to solve our problems was through innovation.” He offered as an example an electrocardiogram he helped GE develop for rural regions that lack electricity, trained staff and the money needed to buy and run a standard ECG machine. They devised a lightweight portable ECG that runs on batteries with only two color-coded on-off buttons that anyone can use to perform a test.
Many healthcare organizations confuse incremental efforts to improve performance and maximize efficiency with innovation, Govindarajan proposed. He categorized those as projects designed to manage the present. True innovation occurs when an organization selectively abandons past models, adapts to change and creates a future that positions the organization as a leader. This poses a strategic challenge, he acknowledged, because it often requires different processes and people and disrupts the status quo.
To create a future, a healthcare organization needs to imagine a possibility and then make sure daily tasks point to that possibility. “It is simple to say but not simple to do,” Govindarajan said. “Everything I said is common sense, but it is not common practice.”
Several forces are at play that make healthcare ripe for innovation, according to the speakers and participants. Shrinking profit margins and growing competition from consumer-focused businesses are pressuring some healthcare organizations to go outside their comfort zone and innovate. Organizations that already embrace change may see opportunities to innovate though restructuring or partnering with entrepreneurs. At the same time, hospitals and health systems face strong headwinds from entrenched and risk-averse cultures, short sightedness, regulatory constraints and tight budgets. Most importantly – and the differentiator between healthcare and other sectors – they need to ensure that no innovation harms patients in any way.
Zane Burke, CEO of Livongo and a CHIME Board of Trustees member, introduced the second keynote speaker, Emily Melton, co-founder and managing partner at Threshold Ventures. Melton said she sees opportunities in healthcare, citing the recent IPO of Livongo, which is one of Threshold’s portfolio companies. She outlined the basics that a venture capitalist looks for in a startup: the product/market fit, the ability to scale broadly and access to multiple customers who will pay over time. Timing is also critical, she said. Investors gauge the market drivers and technology drivers simultaneously to decide when to fund a startup.
Getting concurrence from others is valuable as well, she said. “When you think about similar solutions that can be relevant to a number of you, the extent to which there can be some agreement on picking the companies that are most likely to succeed, you will benefit because they will succeed,” she said. “If everyone does their own custom one-off solution, you won’t see those companies be able to serve the market the way they should.”
Many in the audience agreed that to succeed in a healthcare setting, an innovation needs supportive leadership, a committed and collaborative team, resources and a clear and impactful story. Those topics will be explored in greater depth through CHIME Innovation, which hosted the CI2O Innovation Summit. “The summit is merely the beginning of the conversation.” said CHIME’s Chief Innovation Officer Jonathan Fritz, JD. “This was designed unlike any other CHIME event to bring healthcare leaders together and shape health and care globally through innovation.”
Just as the summit’s participants contributed to the discussion, they will also provide insights for white papers and other resources for the industry in ongoing efforts that began at the summit. The next CI2O Innovation Summit will be held on Aug. 5-6, 2020, in Chicago.
CHIME Innovation was launched in early 2019 to facilitate innovation and provide educational resources for CHIME members and the global healthcare community. Resources include an Innovation Center launched in partnership with Intermountain Healthcare in Utah, which will be the site of the third CHIME Innovation workshop, Innovation Strategy & Frameworks. Nordic completes move to 50,000 square-foot Madison office space
MADISON, Wis. – Nordic has completed a move to its new home office location at Arbor Gate on the Beltline in Madison. With the move, Nordic now occupies 50,000 square feet across parts of four floors, nearly doubling the amount of space at its previous location on Regent Street. The move was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday.
In under 10 years, Nordic has grown from a startup to become one of the nation’s largest independently owned healthcare consulting firms with over 850 consultants across the U.S. and Canada. More than 200 of Nordic’s 1,000-plus employees currently work in the Madison home office, which has room to accommodate 350 employees.
The office space features open concept working and collaboration spaces and 12-foot-tall windows overlooking the University of Wisconsin Arboretum. The space has three wellness rooms, and each floor has kitchens or break rooms offering free snacks, coffee machines, and sparkling water dispensers.
Nordic, which was recently ranked the No. 1 Best Place to Work by Madison Magazine, worked with local design firm Thysse to design and install interior branding to highlight and inspire Nordic’s award-winning culture.
“As we diversify the ways in which we can support our healthcare clients by delivering better care for patients and families, we will continue to see growth in our presence in Madison,” EVP of Human Resources Vicki Ryan said. “We wanted a shared space for our local teammates that inspires the type of innovation and collaboration that sets us apart. In addition to offering the square footage that we need, the Arbor Gate space provides an environment worthy of the Best Place to Work in Madison.”
Nordic worked with multiple local companies to successfully select, build out, and re-design the new space. In addition to Thysse, the list of local partners includes commercial real estate firms Cresa Madison and MIG Commercial Real Estate, commercial contractor Ideal Builders, architecture and interior design firm Potter Lawson, and Henricksen for office furniture.
The new location provides plenty of onsite parking to accommodate all of Nordic’s Madison-based teammates, something that was challenging to achieve within downtown Madison. It is also centrally located on a Madison Metro Transit bus route and just off the Cannonball Path bike trail.
While moving can put a strain on the environment, Nordic has worked to mitigate its environmental impact. Much of Nordic’s building materials were reused, including ceiling tiles, carpets, and light fixtures as well as furniture. With the installation of flavored sparkling and flat water dispensers, Nordic is reducing the use of aluminum cans and reducing its beverage waste by 50%.

Leadership from the Edge Continues to Push Boundaries
10.17.19
Steve Stanic, CHIME Planning Committee Chair, VP/CIO at Mississippi Baptist Health System
CHIME introduced Leadership from the Edge in 2017 at the CHIME Fall CIO Forum. Now it its third year, the program continues to push boundaries. Here is a look at the 2019 program, which will take place between 5-6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4.
Precision Medicine: Better Care Through HIT
Precision medicine is just another buzzword … until it’s real. Rady Children’s has made it real for critically ill children in intensive care. At a time when speed and accuracy are of the essence, the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine has made it possible to deliver better care for critically ill children with rapid whole genome sequencing. Having sequenced over 750 children, some patterns are emerging. In about a third of the cases, sequencing led to diagnosis for children who were previously undiagnosed/misdiagnosed. In approximately 25% of those children sequenced, a diagnosis resulted in change in medical management. In about 20% of the children, there was an improvement in outcomes. Altogether, #bettercarethroughHIT.
Albert Oriol, CIO, Rady Children’s Hospital and Health Center
The Woman and the Stroke – One Patient, Two Stories
Healthcare is a business and requires documentation of service in order to get paid. Medicine is a science and requires explanations of the diagnosis of diseases and how each is to be treated. But caring for people is a team effort and requires a shared understanding of the individual person who needs care. Learn how much words and stories matter as one woman’s tale is told twice: first through the data points and codes entered into the EHR, the second through the trajectory of the her life, her values, how she lived, and the choices she made along the way, including when to die.
Hal Baker, MD, Senior Vice President and Clinical Improvement/CIO, WellSpan Health
CIOs Win Playing Offense, Lose Playing Defense
An EHR survey of over 30,000 physicians from 180 organizations in nine states found dramatic difference in the physician experiences between organizations using the same EHR. What separates the successful from the unsuccessful? Leadership that plays offense. Successful organizations have leaders who are aggressively solving the problems that their clinicians face. These leaders ensure that clinicians are not just given software but are prepared to use it. They build strong relationships with department leaders to deeply understand and quickly meet departmental needs. They help clinicians take control of their own success. What’s more, these leaders do not spend more on their EHR for this success.
Taylor Davis, Vice President of Innovation, KLAS Research
Christopher Longhurst, MD, CIO, UC San Diego Health
Editor’s note: The 2019 CHIME Fall CIO Forum will be Nov. 3-6 in Phoenix. More information about the forum is available here. To register, go here.

Farewell and Congratulations in Order for CHIME Team Members
10.16.2019
Arika Lycan, Director, Corporate Partner Services
The CHIME Foundation has been experiencing some exciting changes in the past month, and we are thrilled to announce some internal transitions in October. Chris Hargrett, currently serving as a Foundation Membership Associate, has taken a promotion as an Education Coordinator and will be working in CHIME’s Events/Education department. He has done great work for our team and Foundation members. We know he will grow and flourish.
While we are sad to see Chris move from the Foundation department, we are excited to announce that Charles Russell has accepted the vacated position, as the newly titled Corporate Partner Services Associate. He has already been part of the CHIME family since January of this year as a Foundation intern. As an intern, Charles was instrumental in the launch of the CHIME Foundation Directory, a major project providing our members better visibility to our Foundation partners. He has quickly come up to speed on Salesforce, our CRM, and has been a driver of our team’s utilization of that tool, enabling better communication to our Foundation partners.
Charles graduated from Northwood University in May of this year with a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration. During his time at Northwood, he founded a Health Management student organization, which was a forum for students to connect with peers in the same field. In addition to other core functions of the Corporate Partner Services team, Charles will be assisting Foundation partners by scheduling and implementing benefits delivery and supporting the focus group process. We are looking forward to Charles continuing to bring new, entrepreneurial ideas to CHIME and the CHIME Foundation.
