Preparing to Host a Focus Group
10.16.2019
Christopher Hargrett, Membership Associate
CHIME19 Fall CIO Forum is just around the corner and the in-person focus groups are a major component at this event.
Focus groups are a great opportunity to receive valuable feedback from the CHIME members, who are the highest-ranking IT executive in a healthcare provider or payer organization. Sessions are intended to be educational and interactive and not a “sales pitch” of products and services.
Throughout the years, multiple resources have been shared through the CHIME website, webinars and Insight articles that highlight how Foundation partners can prepare to host a focus group session, whether it is online or in-person. Here are a few of those resources mentioned below.
- Holding a Focus Group – Your Questions Answered (webinar presentation)
- Perspectives from Both Sides of a Focus Group
- Planning for Focus Group Success – 9 Best Practices
- CHIME Foundation’s Focus Group page with tips, timelines and guidelines
In addition, here are some valuable tips for leading successful focus groups:
Have an “internal agenda.”
A stated goal and objective to attendees at the start of the focus group can help you meet your session’s objectives and help the CIOs guide the discussion, ensuring you are getting what you need from them.Understand your audience.
Don’t get too techy or you might lose your audience. Keep the discussion focused on one topic or a range of topics that are engaging.Employ “active listening.”
Reflect answers back to your participants. Attendees want to know they’re being heard and understood, that their opinions are valued.Utilize the group dynamic.
Create an environment that will encourage discussion between participants. This generates lots of thoughtful ideas. Cyndi Cahill, senior vice president of Atos Digital Health, recently presented a session on Conducting an Engaging Partner Conversation at CPES18. Cahill suggests, “Have your audience interact with each other. You can be the conductor, let them create the music.”The fall focus groups will be held Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 4 and 5, at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.

Fall Forum Offers Formal and Informal Educational and Networking Opportunities
10.16.2019
Cletis Earle, CHCIO, Chair, Foundation Board; SVP & CIO, Information Technology Kaleida Health
The 2019 CHIME Fall CIO Forum is fast approaching, and as your Foundation Board chair I am looking forward to the opportunity to give an update during the forum on the gains we have made this year. I encourage you to use this opportunity to learn, meet members from CHIME and have frank discussions about their needs and your possible solutions.
The forum’s collegial atmosphere makes it unlike other conferences. The emphasis is on education, both formal and informal. Everyone is welcome to attend keynote addresses, sunrise sessions, track sessions and a newer program called Leadership from the Edge. CHIME also has scheduled breakfasts, lunches, dinners and networking receptions that are ideal for informal exchanges.
Foundation partners who arrive on Sunday can attend another program that is close to my heart, the Diversity and Inclusion Forum from 3 to 5:30 p.m. As chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, I will introduce the event along with other members, and then we and attendees will explore topics like best practices and diversity training. Registration is available here.
Focus groups offer another chance to gain valuable knowledge and get to know CHIME members. The CHIME Foundation team provides many tips and resources to help our partners get the most from their focus groups. I have a few suggestions, too, offered from the perspective of a CIO.
First, focus groups are a wonderful opportunity for those of us in provider settings to help guide the direction of our industry. The focus group experiences that get us engaged and energized are the ones that seek our opinions, for instance about a product or a new direction the company is contemplating. On the flip side, focus group sessions that appear to be a sales pitch are likely to get a cool response and do little for building a long-term relationship.
Focus groups that bring in a mix of healthcare IT leaders from different regions and different types and sizes of organizations can prove to be enlightening – both for us, the participants, and for the focus group hosts. Hearing from organizations as varied as large academic healthcare systems to small and rural hospitals, or from similar types of organizations that are based in different areas of the country, can paint a broader picture of an issue or trend in healthcare.
It also helps to be flexible and open minded – that applies to participants and hosts alike. You never know where the discussion may take you, so be prepared for some surprises!
Please reach out to the CHIME Foundation team at [email protected] if you need anything in advance of CHIME19, and be sure to say hello once you are in Phoenix.

Clearwater Executive Chairman Bob Chaput To Keynote Healthcare Internet of Things Conference
Cyber Risk Management Expert to Share Insight on Medical Device Security and Patient Safety at Invitation-Only Thought Leadership Summit
NASHVILLE, TN – October 10, 2019 – Clearwater, the leading provider of Enterprise Cyber Risk Management and HIPAA compliance software and consulting services for the healthcare industry, announced today that Executive Chairman Bob Chaput will be among the keynote speakers at the Cylera HIoT Security Executive Summit, taking place in Miami Beach, FL, October 17-18.
Designed to foster collaboration and innovation for the future of medical device security and patient safety, the invitation-only thought leadership summit will bring together Chief Information Officers (CIO) and Chief Information Security Officers (CISO) from several leading health systems across the country. Medical device security continues to be a major source of concern for the healthcare industry as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Department of Homeland Security issued a new warning on October 1 about cybersecurity vulnerabilities in operating systems that power a variety of medical devices1.
Mr. Chaput’s address, titled “First, Do ‘Know Harm’,” will discuss the growing potential for patient harm due to the compromise of healthcare data, systems, and devices. He will discuss the regulatory requirements and enterprise risk management need for hospitals and health systems to take a more comprehensive and integrated approach to identifying, managing, and reducing cyber risk across the evolving healthcare IT ecosystem.
“The explosion of data, devices, and systems that are supporting healthcare delivery has created the unintended consequence of greater risk – risk not only of protected health information being exposed but also of care not being as accessible or as safe as we need it to be,“ Chaput said. “Patient lives may be at risk, for example, when a ransomware attack disrupts the availability of data and a provider is unable to deliver services. The first step in addressing cyber risk is engaging in a conversation about what cyber risks exist, the potential impacts to patients, and the steps that can be taken to develop a strong Enterprise Cyber Risk Management program.”
A leader who has a unique view of healthcare cybersecurity innovation, Mr. Chaput has been responsible for the associated regulatory compliance and security of some of the world’s largest healthcare networking and computing infrastructures over the course of his nearly 40-year career. He founded Clearwater in 2009 to help healthcare organizations gain a full understanding of all of their cybersecurity risks; that is, all the ways in which there can be a compromise of the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of any of their healthcare data, systems, and devices.
About Clearwater Clearwater is the leading provider of Enterprise Cyber Risk Management and HIPAA compliance software and consulting services for the healthcare industry. Our solutions enable organizations to gain enterprise-wide visibility into cybersecurity risks and more effectively prioritize and manage them, ensuring compliance with industry regulations. Clearwater’s IRM|Pro® software and consulting services help healthcare organizations to avoid preventable breaches, protect patients, and meet OCR’s expectations, while optimizing cybersecurity investments. More than 400 healthcare organizations, including 60 of the nation’s largest health systems and a large universe of business associates that serve the industry, trust Clearwater to meet their information security needs. Health Records on iPhoneⓇ Available to Consumers Enrolled in MEDITECH’s Patient Portal
MEDITECH offers another simple and secure way to provide consumers with access to their health data
October 3, 2019. Enterprise Health Record (EHR) vendor MEDITECH supports Health Records on iPhone, which brings together hospitals, clinics, and the existing Apple Health app to make it easy for consumers to see their available medical data from multiple providers whenever they choose.
“Engaging patients, driving consumer satisfaction, and delivering patient-centric care are the utmost priorities at MEDITECH,” said Howard Messing, CEO. “With health information from MEDITECH now available via Health Records on iPhone, consumers are provided one convenient, comprehensive record, enabling them to take a more proactive role in managing their own wellness.”
Previously, patients’ health records were held in multiple locations, requiring consumers to log into each care provider’s website and piece together the information manually. Apple worked with the healthcare community to take a consumer-friendly approach and created Health Records based on FHIRⓇ (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), a standard for transferring electronic health records.
Now, consumers will have health information from participating institutions organized into one view, covering allergies, conditions, immunizations, lab results, medications, procedures, and vitals, and will receive notifications when their data is updated. Health Records data is encrypted and protected with the user’s iPhone passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID.
MEDITECH customers Grand View Health (Sellersville, PA), Hancock Regional Hospital (Greenfield, IN), and Doylestown Hospital (Doylestown, PA) are leading the way in offering their communities access to their health information through Health Records on iPhone. MEDITECH intends to make this functionality accessible across all its EHR platforms, with its inaugural version in 6.0 and Expanse.
Learn more about how MEDITECH is empowering consumers with Health Records on iPhone. Also, visit https://www.apple.com/healthcare/health-records/ for more information.

Data-Driven Process Redesign Reduces Complications and Improves Quality in Joint Replacements
Focused on the Institute of Healthcare Improvement Triple Aim of improving the quality of care, reducing the cost of providing care and providing a great patient experience, Thibodaux Regional Medical Center in Louisiana leveraged its enterprise data warehouse and analytics applications to identify its most costly and widely variable processes. This led to a Total Hip (THA) and Total Knee (TKA) Arthroplasty care improvement initiative that earned a national patient safety award. Using a collaborative, evidence-based approach, Thibodaux Regional established new standard care processes, created an educational program, redesigned order sets and workflows and deployed a joint replacement analytics application. As a result, the organization reduced complications by 76.5 percent, reduced length of stay by 38.5 percent for TKA and 23.3 percent for THA and lowered costs by $815,103 in less than two years.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the patient-safety and care-quality reasons why Total Hip (THA) and Total Knee (TKA) Arthroplasty processes need to be examined at any healthcare organization
- Explain how care variation can lead to greater costs, higher risk of surgical complications and decreased patient satisfaction
- Describe how analytics tools help identify care process variation and uncover opportunities for improvement
- Summarize how to develop a cross-functional team to address care variation and transform care processes toward greater standardization and efficiency
- List how data analytics applications providing real-time insight can help teams track progress while identifying and overcoming obstacles

CI2O Innovation Summit: A First-Person Account and Photos
10.03.19
By Yuri Campbell, Healthcare IT Strategist, United States Army Medical Center of Excellence
I attended a thought-provoking event hosted by CHIME in September that was a call to action. Omar Lateef, DO, CEO of Rush Medical Center, spoke about driving change from the top of the healthcare system. He emphasized gaining a clear understanding of the pain points felt by users and forming partnerships to make change that is meaningful.
Vijay Govindarajan presented a simple yet powerful Three Box Solution. He spoke about linear and non-linear shifts, and the careful balance that must be maintained in optimizing for the present, selectively disregarding old models from the past, and preparing for the future. VG also presented the best template for a one-page strategy architecture that I’ve ever seen.
Emily Melton outlined what venture capitalists look for when investing in digital health innovations. I also got to hear from Scott Powder, chief strategy officer for Advocate Aurora Health, on how his organization used a dual transformation model to prepare for disruption, while simultaneously optimizing core functions. He emphasized that innovation is about experimentation; fail fast to learn fast.
Hats off to the moderators: Jonathan Fritz, CFCHE, Russ Branzell, CHCIO, Tim Stettheimer, CHCIO, and Kali Durgampudi, CFCHE, for a great event.
Editor’s note: A photo gallery chronicling the Sept. 19-20 event is available here.
