MEDITECH Takes Expanse to the Next Level for Nurses and Therapists, Announces Expanse Patient Care
The company is the first EHR vendor to have a fully web-based nursing solution.
February 18, 2020
MEDITECH has disrupted the EHR market with its revolutionary physician mobility tools, and now the company is doing it again for nurses and therapists with Expanse Patient Care. The intuitive, web-based software empowers nurses and therapists to mobilize care delivery using the device best suited for the task at hand, while keeping their focus on what matters most — their patients.
Designed using MEDITECH’s strong framework and understanding of how nurses and therapists really practice, Expanse Patient Care enhances mobility and streamlines nursing and therapy workflows. Use of familiar, mobile devices allows nurses and therapists to “stay on the go” and maintain face-to-face time with their patients. With a smartphone, caregivers can untether from WOWs and conveniently perform bedside verification, review clinical decision support tools, conduct patient assessments, and review the patient record in the palm of their hands.
Additionally, the solution allows for personalized navigation so users can review patient records in a way that works best for them, with customizable features and a user interface similar to their everyday mobile devices. Users can also conveniently review the full patient journey through a single EHR available on a single mobile device, allowing them to collaborate with physicians using a consistent toolset and efficiently navigate care transitions.
“Nurses and therapists are the largest user group within the MEDITECH community, so it was important for MEDITECH to enhance our EHR in a way that improves their unique and demanding experiences,” said Cathy Turner, BSN, MBA, RN-BC, associate vice president, MEDITECH. “We are excited to provide a modern solution that functions on a mobile device to help transform the way nurses and therapists with busy schedules deliver care.
It is well documented that personal and positive interactions between patients and their care teams improve patient satisfaction. By breaking down technology barriers that too often come between nurses and their patients, Expanse Patient Care helps get nurses back to doing what they enjoy most, while also enhancing the patient experience. With Expanse Patient Care, MEDITECH is reducing the learning curve for nurses and therapists and improving their productivity, resulting in higher overall satisfaction for both caregivers and their patients.
Heading to HIMSS20? Come visit MEDITECH at booth #1428 to hear how Expanse is revolutionizing what an EHR can do.

A Tribute to CIO of the Year Marc Probst (and You Can Contribute, Too)
2.20.2020
By John Kravitz CHCIO, Chair, CHIME Board; Corporate CIO, Geisinger Health System
I am positive that like me, many digital healthcare executives have benefitted from the wisdom and generosity of Marc Probst, winner of the John E. Gall Jr. CIO of the Year award. Marc has touched many of us in several ways, both directly and indirectly. Whether dealing with an early-career team member or a seasoned C-suite leader, he has always been willing to share his time and insights.
Take me, for instance. When I first met Marc, I was working at a smaller organization than my present employer, Geisinger Health System, and he was CIO at Intermountain Healthcare, one of the most prominent health systems in the U.S. Yet Marc was always approachable, providing sound advice about any number of domains that are critical for being – to use CHIME’s vision statement – exceptional leaders transforming health and care. His deep understanding of both the business and the technology have been invaluable for me and many others. And his ability to drill down quickly to the core of an issue and articulate problems and solutions is truly impressive.
But it is not just that Marc is smart; he is honest. He is willing to discuss mistakes as readily as successes, sharing how he handled difficult situations that arose in his career. Sometimes these are lessons in what to avoid, but often they illustrate how to learn, adapt and approach adversity with integrity. Whatever the challenge, he stays true to himself.
Marc’s impact on CHIME is profound, too. Marc has served as chair of the Board of Trustees, chair of the CHIME Foundation Board, a CHIME faculty member, and a member of CHIME’s Policy Steering Committee – all while overseeing Intermountain’s digital enterprise. He has been an advocate for CHIME members and patients nationally, often traveling to Washington, D.C., to help educate policy makers. His contributions earned him CHIME’s 2018 Federal Public Policy Award for CIO Leadership. Marc helped spur CHIME’s international outreach, using his experience and connections overseas to build collaborations and exchange ideas with digital leaders globally. And his expertise was key in the development of CHIME Innovation.
And he has helped shape our industry, too. He served on the Federal Health Information Technology Policy Committee, a committee organized under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to make recommendations on a health IT policy framework. His vision helped Intermountain become a leader in innovation, demonstrating the value of advanced technology and even spinning out startup companies.
We will have a chance to honor Marc from the stage on March 9 during the CHIME-HIMSS CIO Forum in Orlando, Fla. I hope all our members can join us, either in person or remotely through the livestreaming of the event. Whether you attend or not, you can send congratulations here that will get posted on the CHIME website.

02.19.2020
By Christopher Hargrett, Education Coordinator
Revised 05.13.2020
The call for proposals has begun! Eligible CHIME provider members, individually or in teams, as well as Foundation partners in collaboration with CHIME members, may begin submitting proposals for Leadership from the Edge (LFTE) and track sessions for the CHIME20 Fall Forum. Any proposals submitted by CHIME Foundation partners MUST include one or more CHIME provider members. These presentations are approved by a subcommittee of CHIME members.
This year’s Fall Forum will take place Nov. 9-12 in San Antonio, Texas. The fall forum is historically the largest annual event by CHIME. Submitting a track session or Leadership from the Edge proposal is a great opportunity to share knowledge, insight and expertise with more than 800 digital healthcare executives during the forum program.
Leadership from the Edge Proposals
LFTE is designed to look toward the future of healthcare and create an innovative vision for leadership to achieve new successes. LFTE will consist of three 20-minute presentations, similar to TED Talks, that offer compelling and innovative views into the future of healthcare and the role of the HIT leader. The selected speakers present to all forum attendees, without agenda competition.LFTE sessions are reviewed and selected by a subcommittee of the Fall Forum Planning Committee. The subcommittee will look for:
- A developed idea with a view toward what lies ahead, the possibilities and potential and how the future state may look.
- Topics that leave the audience feeling inspired about their work and their leadership in a new and different way.
- Presentations that focus on the ways in which healthcare delivery and leadership may change because of new, disruptive organizational approaches and technologies.
- Presenters who tell a compelling story that challenges assumptions, delivers new concepts and ideas.
- And much more.
Visit the CHIME20 Call for Leadership from the Edge Proposals on the CHIME website for more information and submission requirements.
Track Session Proposals
CHIME members and Foundation partners may have the opportunity to share knowledge, insight and expertise with their peers. Selected presentations will be featured across multiple tracks during the CHIME20 Fall CIO Forum program. The Track Session Subcommittee of the Fall Forum Planning Committee will have the responsibility of reviewing the track session proposals and are looking for the best educational proposals to be featured at the forum. Each completed and eligible proposal is carefully reviewed and evaluated based on the following criteria:

- Proposal content addresses title
- Proposal content is current and provides valued information
- Content and concepts are practical and innovative
- Presentation design is creative and supports audience interaction
- The proposal includes one or more CHIME provider executives
- And ask the question: Would you attend this session?
Proposals must emphasize conveying the solution process rather than the solution itself.
Things will be done differently this year for submitting your proposals, in that you are no longer required to select a specific track category for your presentation. CHIME is looking for the best educational proposals to be featured during track sessions and can be based on a variety of topics, including strategy and leadership, business and care transformation, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, diversity and much more.

DrFirst Introduces ‘Healthiverse™’ to Celebrate Two Decades Uniting the Healthcare Universe
New word reflects DrFirst’s vision for connecting people at every touchpoint of patient care
Rockville, Md., February 11, 2020 – DrFirst, a pioneer in technology, support, and services that connect people at touchpoints of patient care, coined a new term, “Healthiverse™,” in celebration of its twentieth anniversary. The Healthiverse represents the vast, complex, and interconnected healthcare universe, including patients, medical professionals, caregivers, pharmacies, payers, and others.
“Too often, stakeholders across healthcare are separated by frustrating and dangerous information silos,” said G. Cameron Deemer, president of DrFirst. “Our mission is to unite the Healthiverse and improve collaboration among the entire care team so that patient care becomes fully informed.”
To help stakeholders envision the promise of a fully united healthcare universe, DrFirst is introducing an immersive virtual reality experience at several major industry conferences, starting with HIMSS20, held March 9-13, in Orlando, Fla. “People have a real ‘ah-ha moment’ about the Healthiverse concept when they put on our virtual reality headsets and enter the intergalactic fantasy world we created,” Deemer said. “It’s an exciting game that shows how important speed and agility are to successfully connect people within the Healthiverse.”
Founded in 2000 by its CEO, James Chen, DrFirst has been a leader in the development and delivery of solutions that improve patient safety, care collaboration, medication adherence, and medication management. “DrFirst remains committed to creating technology that gives clinicians the information they need, when they need it, to improve patient care,” Chen said. “We believe improving healthcare is simply the right thing to do – and that we are uniquely positioned to do it.”
Over its 20-year existence, DrFirst was first to:
- Commercially deploy an e-prescribing solution in a major U.S. health system
- Apply AI toward improving medication histories and helping avoid adverse drug events by inferring missing data and converting free text to specific terminology that can be used by a hospital’s electronic health record (EHR) system
- Provide real-time medication histories to emergency medical staff so they can more safely care for patients who may be unresponsive or can’t remember their medication details
- Create the framework for electronic prescriptions for controlled substances (EPCS), pilot the program and be certified for the market
Over the last two decades, DrFirst has grown its offerings, users, and staff. Its products, which can be fully integrated into EHR systems or used as stand-alone solutions, are used by approximately 300,000 healthcare professionals, including more than 100,000 prescribers, and over 1,400 hospitals in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, nearly half of EHRs in the U.S. use DrFirst technology. Today, the company employs more than 400 staff and consultants around the world, with three offices in the U.S.
About the Healthiverse™
The “Healthiverse” is a term coined by DrFirst to describe our vision of a united healthcare universe where everyone is connected in real-time to each other and to the information they need, so patients get the best care. The vast Healthiverse includes patients, medical professionals and caregivers, hospitals, pharmacies, EHRs, payers, HIEs, pharmaceutical companies, and more. The expansiveness of the Healthiverse means that providers need better access to complete, clean, and consumable information to provide attentive and timely patient care. DrFirst’s mission is to unite the Healthiverse with revolutionary products and services that close the gaps between information and people so that all sectors in healthcare can create better outcomes together.About DrFirst
Since 2000, DrFirst has pioneered healthcare technology solutions and consulting services that securely connect people at touchpoints of care to improve patient outcomes. We create unconventional solutions that solve care collaboration, medication management, price transparency, and adherence challenges in healthcare. January 31, 2020
MEDITECH, a leading Enterprise Health Record (EHR) vendor, is pleased to announce Expanse, its fully interoperable web-based platform, has been recognized in two key categories paramount to healthcare success today by the 2020 Best in KLAS: Software & Services report. Expanse was top ranked in the Acute Care EMR (Community Hospital) and Patient Accounting & Patient Management (Community Hospital) categories. This is the sixth consecutive year MEDITECH has been recognized as Best in KLAS by the global healthcare research firm.
The annual Best in KLAS report ranks healthcare IT software and services vendors across numerous market segments. The program recognizes outstanding efforts to help healthcare organizations in their quest to deliver quality patient care. The Best in KLAS designation is awarded only in those software and services market segments that have the broadest operational and clinical impact on healthcare organizations.
“It is a significant achievement for MEDITECH Expanse to be named Best in KLAS,” said Helen Waters, executive vice president, MEDITECH. “Year after year, this acknowledgement by KLAS is further validation that MEDITECH is delivering solutions that excel, with proven results that our software and services enable our customers to streamline efficiencies and enhance patient care.”
MEDITECH Expanse ranked Best in KLAS for Acute Care EMR (Community Hospital). Provider feedback to KLAS around the Expanse Acute Care EMR highlights the strength and completeness of the solution. One customer interviewed by KLAS stated, “The software works great. Everything is built in, and we can get into anything. The vendor has been very helpful and supportive of our organizational goals.”
MEDITECH Expanse was also named KLAS Category Leader for Patient Accounting and Patient Management (Community Hospital). A CIO commented, “Our A/R days have never been so low. We have optimized the tools and workflows to achieve some very tangible outcomes. We have to give MEDITECH full credit for developing such a robust product.”
“Providers and payers demand better performance, usability, and interoperability from their vendor partners every year. Best in KLAS winners set the standard of excellence in their market segment,” said KLAS President Adam Gale. “Earning a Best in KLAS award should both excite and humble the recipients. It serves as a signal to providers that they should expect only the best from the winning vendors.”
