Allscripts U.K. client Gloucestershire Hospitals achieves successful go-live with e-observations solution amidst COVID-19 pandemic
NHS Foundation Trust deploys new EHR functionality to identify and escalate treatment for its sickest patients; Allscripts creates a Go-Live Virtual Office to provide 24/7 remote go-live support
CHICAGO – May 21, 2020 – Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, located in the United Kingdom, has successfully gone live with the latest addition to its Allscripts electronic health record, despite the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak.
The Trust decided to deploy the Sunrise EHR as a ‘clinical wrap’ around its existing patient administration system last year and went live with nursing documentation and risk assessments just five months later.
On March 17, 2020, the Trust added the e-observations functionality, which includes automatic calculation of NEWS2, the national early warning score designed to pick up patients at risk of deterioration. The implementation of NEWS2 is immediately helping the Trust manage patients during the COVID-19 outbreak. Gloucestershire Hospitals has also added icons to its patient tracking board to identify patients with COVID-19 and made results available through the system.
“At a time when we were in the midst of COVID-19 planning, I was unbelievably proud of our nursing staff for their impressive implementation of e-observations and commitment to making it work. This has been good for our patients and good for our clinical teams,” said Professor Steve Hams, the Trust’s Director of Quality and Chief Nurse.
“We knew that moving patient observations to Sunrise EHR would bring huge benefits in our two acute hospitals and had planned our launch for March. So when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the UK, we needed to make a quick decision about whether or not to go ahead. We held our nerve and put extra staff on our wards to make sure we got this right, at a challenging time for our hospitals,” said Mark Hutchinson, executive CDIO.
“Having e-observations in place has proved essential in managing our patients during the coronavirus pandemic. Our acute care response teams are able to manage caseloads, senior nursing staff can use the data to manage staffing deployment, and we’re able to track the numbers and locations of patients who are being supported by oxygen.”
The Allscripts U.K. team has moved fast to support Trusts like Gloucestershire Hospitals that want to proceed with go-lives that will help their staff and patients through the pandemic.
It has created a Go-Live Virtual Office with a 24/7 virtual meeting room with voice and video capability, structured documents and screen sharing tools.
The office is connected to a floorwalking messaging app, so team members can be aware of issues as they are identified on wards and clinics, before they are logged into help-desk systems.
For the Gloucestershire Hospitals go-live, the virtual office was staffed with a wide range of team members based in different countries around the globe, so the Trust team could visit at any time.
“As NHS acute Trusts begin to deal with more and more people with COVID-19, the flexibility of Sunrise is proving to be a key tool for helping them to identify and manage these patients,” said Richard Strong, Allscripts Managing Director, EMEA. “It was a brave decision for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to introduce new functionality to record patient observations and escalate the management of deteriorating patients amid the huge organizational change required to prepare for the pandemic. But it was absolutely the right decision, and one Allscripts was determined to support. We moved rapidly to new ways of working to fully support go-lives 24/7, without risking the health of our staff, NHS staff or patients by undertaking traditional support and floor-walking activities. We were already moving toward this way of working before the COVID-19 shutdown, but we accelerated our schedule to push through remote working in time for the Gloucestershire Hospitals go-live. We are now using these tools to support other NHS customers that want to go-ahead with functionality that will help them, their staff and patients at this exceptionally difficult time.”

Capsule’s Ventilated Patient Surveillance Workstation Helping to Meet Hospital Care Demands for Critical COVID-19 Patients
UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI HEALTH SYSTEM AMONG NEW SITES TO GO-LIVE
ANDOVER, MA—MAY 21, 2020—As hospitals confront the COVID-19 pandemic, caregivers need tools to help them manage a large and dispersed population of ventilated patients safely and effectively. To that end, Capsule Technologies offered the Ventilated Patient Surveillance (VPS) workstation providing present users of the company’s Medical Device Information Platform centralized remote observation of patients’ ventilator data and clinically actionable emergent events.
Assisting frontline providers in identifying patients in severe respiratory distress increases the likelihood of survival and reduces the burden on already-stressed care providers. The VPS workstation extends the reach of intensive care unit (ICU) staff over the full range of critical care patients, whether these patients receive care in the traditional ICU, other dedicated areas of the hospital, or non-traditional care settings.
Viewing real-time and trended clinical respiratory measurements and annunciated clinically actionable emergent events from a VPS workstation in a centralized, remote location allows staff to manage patients closely, without having to be physically close. Reducing bedside visits for non-actionable events limits the caregivers’ exposure to infection and reduces their consumption of personal protective equipment (PPE), which saves time, money and the equipment itself, another valuable resource in short supply. Care providers have greater availability for actual clinically actionable events, leading to shortened response times, which can improve patient safety and outcomes.
Ventilated patient surveillance leverages the ventilator connectivity of the Capsule Medical Device Information Platform, which is already being used in over 2,000 hospitals in the U.S. The VPS workstation is a tailored configuration of the company’s Capsule Surveillance solution, which integrates a wide range of patient monitoring and therapy devices, in addition to ventilators. Capsule is offering the VPS workstation to its customers in the U.S., where Capsule Surveillance has FDA clearance.
SUPPORTING FRONTLINE CLINICIANS
The Capsule VPS workstation is already in use by several leading healthcare organizations, including the University of Miami Health System. “Implementation went quickly and smoothly, which was helpful during the rush of coronavirus cases,” said Mary Stein-Ferrer, Director of Clinical Informatics for University of Miami Health System. “We have used ventilated patient surveillance to identify clinically actionable emergent events. Viewing and assessing comprehensive ventilation data on the workstation before entering a patient room reduces the amount of time that our nurses and respiratory therapists spend in that potentially infectious environment.”
Other hospitals and health systems that have successfully implemented the Ventilated Patient Surveillance workstation include Massachusetts General Hospital, Nebraska Medicine, Virginia Hospital Center, Middlesex Health and Capsule’s initial launch partner for the VPS workstation, Yale New Haven Health.
“For our existing clients, adding ventilated patient surveillance is a simple, yet impactful, way to extend the utility of their Capsule installations,” said Hemant Goel, chief executive officer of Capsule Technologies. “Technology is a key enabler, and we are directing all resources to support our clients’ urgent needs to reduce risks, increase efficiencies and extend the reach and availability of resources. Our Ventilated Patient Surveillance workstation offers remote, continuous visibility on critical, respiratory-compromised COVID-19 patients while supporting clinical decisions and helping staff limit their exposure.”
DESIGNED FOR RAPID AND REMOTE DEPLOYMENT IN HOSPITALS
Recognizing that the pandemic has made travel and going on-site at hospitals difficult, Capsule engineers designed the VPS workstation so that the entire solution can be implemented remotely in a matter of hours, with support from the hospital’s IT staff.

Optimum Healthcare IT Completes Virtual Epic Go-Live at Valley Children’s Healthcare
Industry’s First 100% Virtual Epic Go-Live
Jacksonville Beach, FL – May 20, 2020 – Optimum Healthcare IT, a Best in KLAS healthcare staffing and consulting services firm, announced today that the firm completed the go-live of the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system at Valley Children’s Healthcare in Madera, CA. As the only comprehensive pediatric specialty network between Los Angeles and San Francisco—a region covering 45.000 square miles and 1.4 million children, effectively integrating all their care locations from seven different EHR platforms onto a single Epic platform was of utmost importance. The entire go-live project was managed via 100% virtual support by an external vendor, an industry first.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Valley Children’s approached Optimum Healthcare IT about the potential of the project moving forward virtually. Optimum presented a plan that was new to the industry that satisfied the client’s request. Working in partnership with Valley Children’s, the pivot to a virtual go-live was seamless. To support this project, Optimum provided executive oversight, 20+ analysts/application managers, activation program managers and leads, as well as 130+ virtual ATE resources covering all applications of Epic.
“Under normal circumstances, taking an EHR live is a complicated, resource-intensive event. When you factor in a global health pandemic and shelter-in-place orders, the complexity increases immensely, “ said Jason Jarrett, Chief Executive Officer at Optimum Healthcare IT. ”Our strong partnership with Valley Children’s and their forward-looking mindset made this industry-first virtual go-live a success.”
Beginning with virtual one-on-one Activation Readiness activities three-weeks prior, Optimum’s cross-functional and integration expertise was on full display. The project moved into further phases as seamlessly as if the Optimum team was on-site. The same level of oversight and escalation paths were maintained via virtual support rooms, allowing the team to accomplish 80% first-call resolution. Additionally, to ensure the Providers were ready for go-live, Optimum conducted webinars and one-on-one sessions tailored to their needs. Due to COVID-19, a large number of telehealth visits, including video, which is not usually a high need, were supported. The Valley Children’s and Optimum Executive teams remained in constant contact online and regularly attended leadership meetings.
“I have been involved in many go-lives over the years, but this one ran smoothly as any that I have seen,“ said Kevin Shimamoto, Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Valley Children’s Healthcare. “The remote training and go-live model allowed us to stay focused on the COVID-19 pandemic while Optimum ensured our go-live support ran uninterrupted.”
Optimum Healthcare IT offers highly-rated KLAS training and activation services to assist healthcare organizations in bringing their EHR systems live and ensuring users are fully trained and supported throughout their strategic initiatives. Optimum can customize our offering, either on-site or virtually, to fit the needs of your organization. Whether it is a phased approach or a big-bang go-live, our leadership, training, and support experts are ready to provide the best solutions and services the industry has to offer. With our staff, methodology, and tools, Optimum has the experience to organize, schedule, and manage any size go-live.

Yale New Haven Health Partners with Capsule Technologies to Provide Remote Surveillance Solutions for COVID-19 Ventilated Patients
VENTILATED PATIENT SURVEILLANCE WORKSTATION PROVIDES CAREGIVERS WITH CLINICALLY ACTIONABLE NOTIFICATIONS TO SUPPORT PATIENT AND CAREGIVER SAFETY
ANDOVER, MA AND NEW HAVEN, CT—MAY 12, 2020— Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), the largest health system in Connecticut, has deployed Capsule’s Ventilated Patient Surveillance (VPS) workstation to deliver safe and effective patient care to its COVID-19 ventilated patients, both organizations announced today.
With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and the upsurge in patients requiring acute respiratory care, YNHHS reached out to Capsule for a technology solution. Together the organizations devised the Ventilated Patient Surveillance workstation, based on Capsule’s existing Remote Surveillance application.
Launched at YNHHS, the Capsule VPS workstation analyzes streaming live data from ventilators, which are not ordinarily connected for surveillance, and escalates emergent clinically actionable events to respiratory therapists, pulmonologists and intensivists. The added surveillance capability complements the health system’s established InSight Tele-ICU program, which has employed Capsule’s Remote Surveillance solution for many years.
“While developing the VPS workstation, we expected it to provide caregivers additional eyes on their patients for delivering timely interventions,” said Hemant Goel, chief executive officer of Capsule Technologies. “We realized, soon after deploying these at Yale, that the VPS workstation delivered additional benefits, such as protecting caregivers from unnecessary exposure to infection and reducing the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Yale New Haven is among the first hospitals to deploy the solution, maintaining a high standard of care for today’s coronavirus patients, while establishing a higher standard through extended device connectivity.”
Due to the risk of infection, YNHHS patient room doors remain closed, and entering and exiting patient areas takes more time than usual for donning and doffing PPE. With a limited number of Respiratory Therapists (RTs) to cover all ventilators, the VPS workstation helps staff determine a clinically advantageous time to go into patient areas and provide care. It also enables RTs outside the room to guide less experienced care team members at the bedside.
YNHHS has transformed many non-ICU patient rooms into temporary ICU rooms, creating negative pressure environments to mitigate infection spread. Many of these rooms are isolated and do not have windows into accessways, so ventilators and bedside medical devices are not visible, and alarms are not easily heard. The VPS workstation helps staff remotely see and hear the ventilators in these non-traditional ICU settings. The system’s smart rules highlight clinically actionable emergent events, enabling care providers to formulate an effective response. Overall, YNHHS believes that they are achieving superior patient outcomes for COVID-19 ventilated patients compared to most other reported data from hospitals in the U.S.
“Our collaboration with Capsule Technologies is an extension of our existing partnership and our own long-held vision for using technology to manage critically ill patients through remote access, analytics and smart notifications,” said Chris Gutmann, system director, Information Technology and Clinical Engineering at YNHHS. “This ventilated patient surveillance solution is not only helping our care teams confront the COVID-19 pandemic today, but I expect it will continue to serve the needs of our clinicians and patients well into the future, becoming a standard of care.”
Ventilated patient surveillance leverages the ventilator connectivity of the Capsule Medical Device Information Platform, used in more than 2,000 U.S. hospitals. Capsule is offering the VPS workstation to its customers in the U.S., where Capsule Surveillance has FDA clearance. To reduce the financial burden on hospitals, the company provides all necessary software licenses for the VPS workstation at no charge to all eligible clients for an initial period of at least six months and potentially longer if the pandemic persists.
For more information about ventilated patient surveillance, visit capsuletech.com, or contact Capsule Technologies at 1-800-260-9531 or [email protected].

CHIME Statement on Making Telehealth Changes Permanent
ANN ARBOR, MI, May 12, 2020 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is calling for the expansion of telehealth during the COVID-19 public health emergency to be made permanent in the U.S. This expansion has been facilitated through temporary flexibilities, waivers or allowances to federal rules by agencies such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Office for Civil Rights, the Office of the Inspector General and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Also, funding allocated in the CARES Act and released as grants through the Federal Communications Commission has boosted telehealth capabilities for eligible providers.Below is a statement from CHIME President and CEO Russell Branzell:“Telehealth has facilitated the delivery of health and care during the pandemic in the U.S. and around the world. Our members have stood up telehealth programs literally in days, letting their hospitals and health systems triage patients and provide care to those in need. They have been able to safely treat non-COVID patients or COVID patients with mild symptoms at home without the risk of exposing clinicians and other hospital administrative workers to patients with the virus. With personal protection equipment in short supply, telehealth programs have also been critical for hospitals and ambulatory care facilities.CHIME supports the changes enacted by Congress and the administration and wants them made permanent. Our members have shown the tremendous value that virtual care brings to patients, clinicians, healthcare organizations – including acute, ambulatory, long-term, post-acute, and behavioral health providers – as well as payers. In making these changes permanent, we must ensure they are provided in a secure and private environment. Our members place a premium on protecting patient data and we are confident that with the right tools and policies, telehealth can be delivered securely. We call on Medicare and all other insurers to continue to fund telehealth programs and work collaboratively on coverage and coding to lessen provider burden. We cannot go back to pre-COVID telehealth; instead, we must go forward. Patients will demand it and providers will expect it. We encourage everyone in healthcare to build on the momentum and continue to innovate with virtual care. Working together, we will come out of this pandemic stronger, better, and more resilient than ever.”About CHIMEThe College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is an executive organization dedicated to serving chief information officers (CIOs), chief medical information officers (CMIOs), chief nursing information officers (CNIOs), chief innovation officers (CIOs), chief digital officers (CDOs) and other senior healthcare IT leaders. Veradigm, Surescripts Partner to Reduce Time-to-Fill for Specialty Medication Prescriptions
Agreement facilitating the accelerated fulfillment for hundreds more specialty medications across one of healthcare’s largest provider networks
CHICAGO – May 12, 2020 – Allscripts (NASDAQ: MDRX) business unit Veradigm™, a leading provider of data and technology solutions, today announced the signing of an agreement with Surescripts to enhance its Veradigm AccelRx™ specialty medication fulfillment solution with Surescripts Specialty Patient Enrollment. The agreement will enable AccelRx to support healthcare providers in more quickly fulfilling prescriptions for hundreds more types of specialty medications by incorporating Surescripts’ expansive health information network, further streamlining healthcare providers’ management of specialty medication within their electronic health record workflow.
Representing less than 3% of all prescriptions written in the U.S. in 2020, specialty medications are expected to account for up to 50% of the total drug spend.1 To receive their specialty medication, a patient’s prescription must pass through a broad cross-section of healthcare stakeholders, from biopharma companies and payers, to specialty pharmacies and specialty medication hubs. Each of these entities may have their own, standalone online portal for facilitating fulfilment for a single drug or manufacturer. With so many manufacturers and payers directly involved in the delivery of specialty medications, it can be easy for providers and even specialty medication hubs to be overwhelmed.
The result is often that instead of taking days to receive their specialty medication, it takes weeks or even months. Despite this rapid growth, recent data from Veradigm has shown that specialty drugs are 50% less likely to be electronically prescribed.2
Combining one of healthcare’s largest prescriber bases with broad industry partnerships built over decades of e-prescribing and prior authorization leadership, Veradigm AccelRx delivers a unique software platform designed to streamline specialty medication fulfillment.
“Veradigm is excited to join with Surescripts in strengthening the ability of Allscripts’ network of healthcare providers to reduce or eliminate the many phone calls and faxes associated with enrolling patients for specialty medication prescriptions,” says Tom Langan, Veradigm CEO. “In our unique position at the nexus of point-of-care patient solutions and clinical data insight, our many biopharma and payer partners are looking to us for support in streamlining this process. With this agreement, Veradigm AccelRx will be enabled to deliver a solution for hundreds of specialty medications and help us rapidly progress toward our goal of covering every specialty medication for every therapeutic area.”
By enabling providers to enroll patients into specialty programs in the EHR and coordinating information sent to the pharmacy, while the patient is still in their office, Veradigm AccelRx, in collaboration with partners like Surescripts, delivers the tools providers need to overcome the existing gaps and speed up the specialty medication fulfillment process.
“When we replace manual work with an accurate, electronic workflow, patients get essential therapies sooner and providers have more time to do what matters most, help patients,” said Mike Pritts, Surescripts Chief Product Officer. “Together with Veradigm, we can help drive meaningful change for all providers using AccelRx to accelerate and simplify specialty medication enrollment to the pharmacy and specialty medication hub.”

Major Canadian medical imaging provider selects Sectra’s enterprise imaging solution
Linköping, Sweden and Mississauga, Canada – May 12, 2020 – International medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra (STO: SECT B) will install the radiology and breast imaging modules of its enterprise imaging solution at Mayfair Diagnostics’ facilities in Canada. The solution will support workflow optimization and increased reading efficiency across multiple geographic locations, thereby improving diagnostics and patient care.
Mayfair Diagnostics serves about 700,000 patients annually across 13 locations in the greater Calgary area. It is the largest teleradiology provider in Western Canada, performing approximately 90,000 interpretations each year.
“It was important for us to select a vendor with extensive solution replacement experience and a track record of high system availability and customer satisfaction. With Sectra, we’ll gain a partner and a solution that will enable us to achieve increased productivity and support future growth,” says Dr. Ryan Wada, Radiologist at Mayfair Diagnostics.
Mayfair Diagnostics will be a pioneer in the North American market for Sectra’s new business model of software subscription rather than an upfront license purchase. This will allow Mayfair Diagnostics to easily scale the service as well as expand the number of functions and modules used as demands change.
Sectra’s solution eliminates the need for multiple workspaces as clinicians can access their tools and necessary information from a single workstation. The platform includes functionality for workflow allocation and interoperability capabilities. It will support Mayfair’s teleradiology business and enable integration with other enterprise systems and the shared region-wide image archive.
The contract, signed during the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, comprises radiology and breast imaging as well as advanced workflow management and advanced visualization tools.
“I’m delighted to welcome Mayfair Diagnostics to our growing customer community in Canada. We are hopeful that our consistently high system uptimes and intuitive workflows will realize efficiencies and support Mayfair in their future growth,” says Kjetil Nilsen, President of Sectra Canada Inc.
Sectra’s enterprise imaging solution provides a unified strategy for all imaging needs while lowering operational costs. The scalable and modular solution, with a VNA at its core, allows healthcare providers to grow from ology to ology and from enterprise to enterprise.

Veradigm dedicated to helping combat COVID-19
Veradigm is working daily to help defeat COVID-19; supporting providers on the front line with tools to better manage their patients as well as arming researchers with patient data to enable a better understanding of virus patterns, symptoms, treatments and outcomes
CHICAGO (April 29, 2020) – As a leading provider of data and technology solutions, Allscripts (NASDAQ: MDRX) business unit, Veradigm, is at the forefront of the fight to help providers and researchers, and the patients they serve. The company is committed to leveraging its technology to help providers identify patients at risk for the virus and ensure they have the information and tools needed to help them. In addition, Veradigm is a founding member of a consortium dedicated to providing the data necessary for advancing COVID research.
COVID-19 Research Database
Veradigm is a founding collaborator of a consortium of leading healthcare companies who announced the launch of the COVID-19 Research Database earlier this week. The COVID-19 Research Database is a repository of HIPAA-compliant, de-identified and limited patient-level data sets that are intended to be made available to public health and policy researchers pro-bono, enabling them to extract insights to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. As a collaborator of the consortium, Veradigm has committed to provide de-identified EHR patient data for nearly 60 million U.S. patients with a recent encounter.COVID-19 Clinical Workflow Initiatives
Among its early efforts to help physicians identify patients at risk, Veradigm implemented a reminder that appears during the EHR log in process reminding providers to ask patients about recent travel and potential exposure when they present symptoms associated with COVID-19. It also began alerting physicians when a diagnostic code they enter for a patient aligns with CDC clinical criteria for COVID-19. The alert is displayed prominently, signals to the physician that the diagnosis is associated with COVID-19 and provides a link to CDC guidelines. Most recently, Veradigm began deploying free video-conferencing services to its EHR providers, enabling them to deliver services during the peak period of this crisis through telemedicine, and helping control further contamination. Over the past months, Veradigm has offered valuable patient engagement tools to its customers, such as HIPAA-compliant secure texting and broadcast messaging.
Other initiatives Veradigm has taken include:
- Implementing COVID-19 questionnaires within the software that enable documentation of current symptoms, recent travel outside the country and more.
- Establishing a connection to the CDC website from within several places in the provider workflow within the EHR.
- Launching a Physician and Patient resource section within its website that includes information on preparedness, screening and testing, prevention and control, management and treatment and patient education.
- Offering providers video chat services to support telehealth.
- Providing ePrescribe software that is EHR agnostic and can be used by any practice even if they don’t use its EHR.
- Implementing changes to development process, enabling Veradigm to be swifter in implementing new alerts, diagnostic codes and other related efforts into the workflow of its EHR.
Veradigm is also continuing its long-standing policy to offer its EHR services free of charge to the local Free Clinics who are at the front line of this pandemic.
“We, at Veradigm, pledge to do our utmost to maintain the highest levels of service, reliability, and insight for patients and the providers that serve them,” said Veradigm CEO, Tom Langan. “Our solutions are an integral part of toolsets that medical professionals are using to care for their patients, whether in person or telehealth.”
