Innovation improves care delivery around the world
Allscripts robust patent program earns five new application patents in eight days
CHICAGO – Aug. 25, 2020 – Allscripts Healthcare Solutions (NASDAQ: MDRX) was recently awarded five separate patents over the course of just eight days, reflecting the company’s commitment to delivering unique solutions to its clients and demonstrating its significant momentum in health IT innovation. The Allscripts patent program is expected to add numerous additional patents throughout the remainder of 2020 as the company will deliver innovation to improve how clinicians deliver care and connect the overall patient experience.
Each of the patents recently awarded contributes to streamlining and improving healthcare delivery. For example, one of the patents is for an application that connects electronic health records (EHRs) to various wellness applications to provide patients frictionless goal-tacking functionality, which directly leads to a higher level of patient engagement. Another application enables API calls from EHRs to initiate searches over genetic testing data stores. A patent was also issued for an application that helps organizations secure data in a HIPAA-compliant manner that will not cause performance issues that are often associated with typical encryption practices.
With a long history as a leader in healthcare technology, Allscripts continues seizing opportunities to enrich its offerings. Through extensive investment in software R&D these efforts have resulted in an extensive patent program that has 150 patents issued plus another 150-plus patents currently pending. In 2013 there was one patent in the Allscripts portfolio. Allscripts’ vision remains firmly set on providing healthcare organizations the distinctive solutions they need to deliver excellent care.
“Innovation is at the core of everything we do and I’m proud of the visionary work our team consistently executes upon to grow the capabilities of our solutions to help our clients deliver better care,” said Allscripts CEO, Paul Black. “Allscripts believes that healthcare solutions should be open, for everyone, and leading-edge innovation is the driver to make that a reality.”

Capsule Technologies Expands COVID-19 Relief Efforts
VENTILATED PATIENT SURVEILLANCE WORKSTATION POWERED BY MICROSOFT AZURE NOW AVAILABLE TO HOSPITALS
ANDOVER, MA — AUGUST 20, 2020 — To give hospitals greater flexibility in their ongoing response to COVID-19, Capsule Technologies announced today the availability of the cloud deployed and managed version of its Ventilated Patient Surveillance (VPS) workstation powered by Microsoft Azure. The news marks an extension of Capsule’s long-standing collaboration with Microsoft.
The VPS workstation provides users of the Capsule Medical Device Information Platform (MDIP) centralized remote observation of patients’ ventilator data and clinically actionable emergent events.
A significant portion of coronavirus patients experience severe respiratory complications and require therapy provided by means of mechanical ventilators. With a much higher than normal population of ventilated patients, respiratory therapists and other clinicians experienced in acute respiratory care have many more cases to manage. Treating quarantined patients presents unique challenges, including taking added precautions to prevent infection of staff, who don Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for in-person bedside visits. The VPS workstation annunciates alerts for clinically actionable emergent events so that clinicians can better manage their personal exposure to the virus, and their use of PPE.
“Our collaboration with Microsoft provides hospitals another option to deploy the VPS workstation in the fight against COVID-19,” said Frederic Darguesse, vice president of engineering at Capsule Technologies. “Microsoft’s guidance and training on Microsoft Azure enabled us to accelerate deployment for Capsule clients in need of this specialized clinical solution. And it’s the easiest way for a hospital that already has a cloud IT strategy to get up and running. Microsoft is committed to privacy, data sovereignty and compliance with healthcare regulations in all Azure regions.”
Dr. David Rhew, global chief medical officer, Microsoft said, “Microsoft Azure helps Capsule support healthcare customers and provides a platform for future capabilities in a wide range of markets. Hospitals can now quickly deploy the VPS workstation without burdening on-site tech resources.”
Ventilated patient surveillance leverages the ventilator connectivity of the Capsule MDIP, used in more than 2,000 U.S. hospitals. Besides ventilated patient surveillance, Capsule will make the MDIP available on Azure in the near future, and hospitals will be able to speed upgrades across the Capsule platform.

Healthgrades COVID-19 Patient Confidence Study Looks at Consumer Comfort in Returning to Doctor’s Office Compared to Returning to School
August 19, 2020 – Denver, Colo. – As school districts across the country reopen, the latest data released from the Healthgrades COVID-19 Patient Confidence Study, in partnership with Infosurv, shows that consumers who responded are more comfortable going to the doctor or having a medical procedure than they are having their children returning to school. At the same time, consumers are more comfortable sending their children back to school than going to the movies, restaurant or going on vacation. Specifically, findings show:
- 65% of consumers feeling comfortable visiting their doctor
- 42% of consumers with preschoolers are comfortable sending them back to school next week
- 33% of consumers with K-12 grade children are comfortable sending their children back to school next week
- 32% of consumers are comfortable going to a restaurant
- 25% of consumers are comfortable traveling via plane
- 21% of consumers are comfortable going to a movie theatre next week
“As we have been tracking patient confidence over the past 21 weeks, we have seen noticeable volatility in consumer’s comfort levels towards various activities, whether it is towards starting a new healthcare treatment or sending their children back to school,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “The good news is that consumers are feeling most confident about visiting the doctor and accessing healthcare services. While we suspect that opinions will continue to fluctuate given the evolving nature of COVID-19, it’s clear that consumer confidence is generally increasing since we started collecting this data in March.”
Since the COVID-19 Patient Confidence Study started March 27th, consumer confidence towards visiting a doctor, telehealth, and doing everyday activities have also fluctuated. Since the last release, the data is showing:
- 86% of consumers feel safer when they see people wearing face masks in public.
- Telehealth adoption is also continuing to rise, with 92% of consumers stating that telehealth can replace some HCP appointments.
- 56% of consumers would feel comfortable starting a new treatment for a condition in the next 1-2 months.

The 2020 Healthcare Data Breach Report: an Analysis of HHS Breach Reports from January 2020-June 2020
Reported data breaches to HHS declined in the first half of 2020 – but watch out for the next wave.
The number of healthcare breach reports is down 10.4% compared to the second half of 2019, while the number of breached records is down nearly 83%.
The 2020 H1 Healthcare Data Breach Report – an excerpt
Health and Human Services (HHS) data shows that the number of patient data records breached declined during the early stages of the pandemic, but are expected to surge as the ‘new normal’ creates new vulnerabilities.
Data breaches involving the protected health information (PHI) of patients declined sharply during the first half of 2020, according to a CI Security analysis of data reported to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The number of HHS breach reports from healthcare organizations is down 10.4% in the first half of 2020, compared to the second half of 2019, and the number of reported breached records is down nearly 83%.
While there isn’t one simple explanation for the numbers declining so precipitously in the midst of a global pandemic, a combination of factors may have come into play, including:
1. Healthcare organizations upping their cyber security programs.
2. Some healthcare organizations misunderstanding HHS exceptions issued during the pandemic, leading them to believe they had a COVID 19-related extension beyond the required 60-day window.
3. Healthcare organizations were simply being too busy to report.
4. Some healthcare organizations were hopeful that cybercrime groups who promised to “go easy” on healthcare for the duration of the pandemic, would keep their word. Unfortunately, we have seen a number of reports on phishing and other attacks from cybercrime gangs and nation-states taking advantage of over-stressed healthcare entities during the first half of the year.
5. Some healthcare organizations have been so distracted by the pandemic and associated emergency operations that they have been breached, but don’t know it yet. This is the most ominous explanation but seems very plausible given the average time it takes for healthcare organizations to spot a breach is 329 days, according to IBM’s 2020 “Cost of a Breach” report.
We anticipate that cyber attacks will surge over the next six months for two reasons…

Healthcare Cybersecurity Firm Unveils Decline in Reported Healthcare Cyberattacks to Department of Health & Human Services, Expects Surge in H2
Seattle, WA — CI Security®, the mission-driven provider of Critical Insight Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services for critical systems and organizations, today announced the release of the 2020 H1 Healthcare Data Breach Report, which analyzes trends around reported data breaches and records breached from healthcare providers.
This has been a very challenging year since the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in the U.S. was reported in January. Despite the outbreak starting in the first half of 2020, data analyzed from the Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) Breach Portal shows that the number of patient data records breached dramatically declined during the early stages of the pandemic.
Reports of Healthcare Breaches and Compromised Records Are Down in Early 2020
CI Security analysts assessment indicates that the number of breach reports in the first half of 2020 is down 10.4 percent compared to the second half of 2019, and the number of breached records is down nearly 83 percent, based on information that healthcare organizations are required to submit to HHS within 60 days of the discovery of any breach affecting more than 500 individual records.
“A combination of factors come into play for the numbers declining so precipitously during a global pandemic, including healthcare organizations misunderstanding HIPAA and COVID-19 exceptions issued during the pandemic, healthcare organizations simply being too busy to report, or organizations having been so distracted by the pandemic they are not aware they have already been breached,” said Drex DeFord, Executive Healthcare Strategist, CI Security.
“With the likely notion that some healthcare organizations are not accurately reporting attacks and breaches, this draws attention to the fact that there will likely be a dramatic increase in discovery in the next six months.”
Key Findings
-
A total of 3.8 million individual records were breached through hacking and IT incidents in the first half of 2020, compared to 30 million records breached over the prior six-month period.
-
The first half of 2020 showed an 82 percent drop in records breached by healthcare providers (over the previous six-month period).
-
Email was the top source of breaches in the first half of 2020 (134), blamed for over 3M records breached in the first half of 2020, up 86 percent over the last half of 2019.
-
Hacking consistently leads the way for total number of breach reports, accounting for 149 of the 249 breaches reported in H1 2020.
-
Providers reported 18 percent fewer breaches in the first half of 2020, compared with the last six months of 2019.
Early 2020 Impacts on Healthcare IT
The emergence of the COVID-19 global pandemic caused organizations to change business and clinical practices rapidly from rolling out work-from-home for employees, driving exponential increases in telehealth visits, and urgently acquiring and installing equipment, including Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Medical Things (IoMT).
Additionally, healthcare organizations extended capacity by quickly on-boarding previously retired clinicians, and temporary employees; added new locations for drive-thru testing and other needs; and connected to new suppliers.
What’s Next for Healthcare Security in H2 2020
CI Security anticipates that cyberattacks will surge over the next six months, given hospital records remain a high-value target for hackers; patient medical records are worth as much as ten times more than credit card numbers on the dark web. Healthcare organizations will require more cyber security vigilance than ever before.

TRIMEDX ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH MEDIGATE TO PROVIDE REAL-TIME VISIBILITY INTO CONNECTED MEDICAL DEVICES, LAUNCHES EXPANDED OFFERINGS FOR HEALTH SYSTEMS
July 21, 2020 Comprehensive clinical asset management and cybersecurity program will revolutionize health systems’ understanding of medical device utilization and introduce next-generation device safety & security protection
INDIANAPOLIS‒Healthcare technology company TRIMEDX, an industry-leading provider of clinical asset management solutions for health systems’ clinical engineering services, announced a strategic partnership with Medigate―a dedicated medical device security and asset management solution firm―to meet the unique demands of clinical asset management (CAM) and medical device safety and security for healthcare systems. This coincides with TRIMEDX’s launch of its new CAM Advanced and CYBER Advanced product offerings, which makes it uniquely able to offer comprehensive, real-time data along with enhanced visibility to guide providers in improving their overall performance―improving financial health, reducing risk and improving patient/clinician satisfaction.
Through this partnership, TRIMEDX and Medigate deliver an integrated solution that merges the TRIMEDX CAM Advanced and CYBER Advanced solutions with Medigate’s real-time visibility, utilization data and threat/vulnerability detection. “Leveraging the power of cybersecurity monitoring, the depth and breadth of device-level data, analytics, and the skills and expertise of our field associates and leadership, TRIMEDX delivers a best-in-class portfolio designed to manage the full lifecycle of a hospital or health system’s clinical assets,” says TRIMEDX CEO Henry Hummel.
Advanced, real-time utilization insights
According to Deloitte Development LLC in July 2018, 68% of medical devices are projected to be connected devices by the year 2025. With cyberattacks rising exponentially each year, the security of connected medical devices has never been more critical. And since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, TRIMEDX’s cybersecurity team has seen the number of cyber threats increase from an average of 19/month to 80+/month during pandemic response efforts.
“As more medical devices are integrated into clinical networks, real-time connected medical device utilization data, in lieu of estimates, or manual collection of data over time, adds greater accuracy to emergency preparedness and capital planning initiatives across hospitals and health systems,” says LeAnne Hester, TRIMEDX chief marketing officer.
The Medigate platform discovers and precisely identifies every connected device on a clinical network, automatically doing so, in real-time, through proprietary algorithms specifically built to identify devices and communication protocols. “The foundation of our work together is around leveraging the strengths of both organizations,” says Jonathan Langer, CEO and co-founder of Medigate. “The combined value of TRIMEDX’s clinical engineering expertise with Medigate’s deep technology specific to healthcare cybersecurity will fuel the TRIMEDX operation with even greater actionable and accurate data in providing high-value service and information.”
Industry-leading threat detection and remediation
Through this partnership, Medigate and TRIMEDX address device safety and security monitoring, threat detection and remediation in a closed-loop system, marrying best-in-class industry expertise in both technology and people. Medigate’s platform continuously reviews network activity, quickly identifying anomalies that are escalated for review, while a dedicated team of TRIMEDX clinical engineering cyber specialists proactively searches for known vulnerabilities, monitors supplier response to known risks, and applies approved patches. In addition, recognizing the unique expertise required to manage the cyber risk of medical devices, all members of the TRIMEDX Cybersecurity Team receive approximately 200 hours of dedicated training through the TRIMEDX CYBER Academy. All data is tracked through the TRIMEDX proprietary work order system to keep clients continually apprised on the status of remediation.
“This is a fundamental shift from a manual process of capturing data to automatic, real-time cybersecurity monitoring of connected devices across clinical networks,” says Doug Folsom, TRIMEDX chief information officer. “Real-time device data is securely captured and analyzed, enabling us to create visibility and deliver the most powerful and comprehensive Clinical Asset Management solution. Utilization, combined with our clinical asset benchmarks, provide objective data for health systems as they make decisions around replacing, disposing of or reallocating medical devices, leading to savings in operational and capital expense.”
Partnership expands TRIMEDX product offerings
Building on its strong foundation of clinical asset management, now TRIMEDX introduces its CAM Advanced and CYBER Advanced offerings to its clients. Leveraging the power of the Medigate platform, TRIMEDX is taking technology enablement to the next level.
The CYBER Advanced offering brings greater inventory accuracy through the collection and maintenance of key attributes of connected and connectable medical devices. It also provides real-time monitoring of vulnerabilities, alerts, recalls as well as the detection of potential suspicious behavior; along with more efficient remediation workflow and a supplier scorecard that allows clients to make more informed medical device purchasing decisions. It introduces a first-in-industry, advanced cybersecurity risk score to gain visibility of device risk profile as well as overall security risk posture. This comes along with a dedicated CYBER team that proactively identifies cyber vulnerabilities and on-site CYBER specialists for all aspects of cybersecurity remediation.
The CAM Advanced solution transforms capital planning initiatives into a dynamic, data-driven, objective process that establishes spending priorities and maximizes equipment ownership. [email protected]Comprehensive clinical asset management and cybersecurity program will revolutionize health systems’ understanding of medical device utilization and introduce next-generation device safety & security protection
The Advanced offering includes the TRIMEDX proprietary RUDR ScoreSM―a proprietary score that drives objective decision making around clinical asset replacement, upgrade, disposition or reallocation. It also contains advanced benchmarking of client data against national data on over 4.2M clinical assets in its proprietary data warehouse, as well as integration with the Medigate platform for utilization data and sophisticated cyber risk scoring to support targeted decision making.
“The healthcare industry is a mission-critical environment,” says Hummel. “In working with our early adopters of our Advanced solutions, we have demonstrated a level of precision and accuracy along with reliability and credibility achieved in real time. TRIMEDX will operate in an even more proactive way for its clients.”
