Stoltenberg Consulting’s Health IT Industry Outlook Survey reveals five key leadership trends for 2020 amid pandemic turbulence
PITTSBURGH, September 23, 2020 — In the eighth annual Health IT Industry Outlook Survey conducted by Stoltenberg Consulting Inc., a leading healthcare information technology consulting firm, 42 percent of healthcare industry respondents identified “retaining and budgeting for qualified IT resources” as the biggest operational burden, followed by “IT service failures (i.e., system downtimes or cybersecurity hits)” at 24%, and “provider burnout or inefficiency from EHR frustration” at 21%. This resource strain emerges with COVID-19’s financial impact, as most healthcare facilities have slashed IT budgets, directly impacting system and user support span. Amplifying the concern, the survey found that one-third of healthcare organizations feel unprepared for the COVID-19 financial aftermath.
Throughout the pandemic, healthcare leaders have pushed for more meaningful data insights to mitigate clinical care and end-user support needs. When asked, “What is the top area of IT where you wish you could have stronger support?” respondents were almost even in their desire for support toward “applicable data analytics insights” (34%) and “the IT help desk” (32%).
When considering where healthcare organizations will invest the most IT dollars in the next year, “maximizing data analytics program” took the top spot (37%). This was closely followed by “applying AI initiatives” (34%), while EHR version upgrades (18%) and cybersecurity measures (11%) fell in IT investment rankings.
“Because of COVID-19’s financial hit, we’re seeing significant push on hospital IT departments to both find cost savings opportunities and make do with resource limitations moving forward,” said Joncé Smith, Vice President of Revenue Cycle Management at Stoltenberg Consulting. “It’s time for health systems to put their data analytics initiatives to the test to proactively identify operational and user support efficiencies.”
Keeping up with value-based care alignment and health system growth, 45% of healthcare participants said that EHR version upgrades were their organization’s “most recent or near-future mission-critical IT event.” Other responses included “system, server or software patching” (29%), “EHR system downtime” (16%), and “system consolidation” (11%).
Stoltenberg conducted the 2020 survey virtually. Survey participants represented a comprehensive spectrum of provider facilities, including health systems, standalone hospitals, physician practices and other ambulatory care facilities. Of the respondents, 53% were health IT professionals, 26% held healthcare executive/c-suite titles, and 21% held various clinical, financial or other titles.

Optimum Healthcare IT Completes Virtual Epic Go-Live at Royal Melbourne Hospital
Industry’s First International Virtual Epic Go-Live
September 22, 2020
Optimum Healthcare IT, a Best in KLAS healthcare staffing and consulting services firm, announced today that the firm completed a virtual training and go-live of the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system at Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) in Victoria, Australia. As one of Victoria’s largest hospitals, the RMH provides a comprehensive range of health services across two campuses. The transition to Epic was essential to improve the way the hospital delivered care. After completing the industry’s first virtual Epic Go-Live in May, Optimum’s experience and skillset allowed them to support a similar project internationally.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Royal Melbourne Hospital contracted with Optimum Healthcare IT to conduct a virtual go-live after learning of its success with similar virtual go-live projects. Also, Optimum had previously provided advisory services around Epic Community Connect to the organization. The most significant hurdle to overcome for this project was the time difference, which was handled with the development of swing shifts to minimize the impact and allow management to have visibility into both the day and night shifts.
With the shift to virtual go-live projects because of COVID-19, Optimum has worked with many organizations as they continue to take new systems live or expand their current EHR systems, said Jason Jarrett, Chief Executive Officer at Optimum Healthcare IT. The flexibility and adaptability that comes with virtual projects allowed us to partner with Royal Melbourne Hospital to achieve the industry’s first international virtual Epic go-live. This is a significant achievement for both Optimum and Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Before the go-live project started, RMH experienced an increased spike in COVID-19 cases, increasing Optimum’s scope. Initially, the project focused solely on the ambulatory setting. The expanded scope added both the inpatient setting and personalization labs. The engagement began with Optimum performing preparation activities before RMH’s Stage 2 Go-Live and continued with virtual at-the-elbow services. Optimum provided virtual room leads to oversee and manage virtual inpatient support resources, virtual ambulatory support resources, program management, and executive oversight, including virtual management of scheduling and technical setup.
Optimum Healthcare IT offers highly-rated KLAS training and activation services to assist healthcare organizations in bringing their EHR systems live and ensuring users are fully trained and supported throughout their strategic initiatives. Optimum can customize our offering, either on-site or virtually, to fit the needs of your organization. Whether it is a phased approach or a big-bang go-live, our leadership, training, and support experts are ready to provide the best solutions and services the industry has to offer. With our staff, methodology, and tools, Optimum has the experience to organize, schedule, and manage any size go-live. Medigate Named Finalist in 2020 American Cyber Awards
NEW YORK—Aug. 31, 2020—Medigate, a dedicated medical device security and asset management solution firm, today announced it has been selected as a finalist for the 2020 American Cyber Awards in the category: “Best Security Company of the Year – Under 150 Staff.”
The American Cyber Awards were established to shine a spotlight on the most innovative and successful people, teams and products in cybersecurity in America. The American Cyber Awards reviews the industry, searching for those who are pushing the boundaries in the fight against cyber crime. Companies who are committed to progressing the industry, are reviewed by judges that come from varied backgrounds, and are some of the most well-regarded individuals within the industry. They will review all applications, deciding winners collectively at a judging day.
“The healthcare industry is under attack from cyber criminals who are targeting the network vulnerabilities caused by IoT devices connecting to the network. And with the pandemic driving an increase in remote or telehealth options, these threats are on the rise,” said Jonathan Langer, CEO and cofounder of Medigate. “Now, more than ever, we need robust technology to not only protect medical devices, but all connected endpoints in the hospital environment and beyond. This recognition from the American Cyber Awards demonstrates that our message is resonating with key industry players and we’re thrilled with the opportunity to further spotlight the vital role that cybersecurity plays in the healthcare space. ”
Organizer Christina Price said, “This is the inaugural year for these awards, and we have been overwhelmed with the number, and quality of entrants. Those companies and individuals who have made the shortlist, should be pleased with their achievement as the competition to do so was tough. I know the judges are going to have a hard time selecting the overall winners.”
Medigate closes the healthcare IoT cybersecurity gap that most general security solutions cannot address with a security platform specifically designed for the unique needs of medical devices and clinical networks. Installed in nearly 2000 healthcare locations around the world, Medigate’s platform enables the automatic discovery of all connected devices, IoT and IoMT, on clinical networks, in turn detecting credible threats in real-time, preventing attacks and malicious communication and enforcing clinically driven policies to protect patient safety and privacy.

Capsule Receives FDA 510(k) Clearance for Vitals Plus Monitor with Masimo NomoLine® ISA™ CO2 Module
ADDITION OF CAPNOGRAPHY MONITORING CAN HELP HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS RECOGNIZE DETERIORATING PATIENT CONDITIONS, INCLUDING RESPIRATORY DEPRESSION
ANDOVER, MA—SEPTEMBER 15, 2020—Capsule Technologies has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Vitals Plus monitoring solution with the Masimo NomoLine ISA CO2 Module, the company announced today.
Capnography technology enables clinicians to continuously monitor patient end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2), respiratory rate (RR) and fractional inspired CO2 (FiCO2) for ventilation adequacy and the onset of changes in patients’ cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Capnography is used to assess hypoventilation and hyperventilation, which is particularly important as an indicator of respiratory depression or impending respiratory failure and arrest. Capnography is commonly used to assess the return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest and has applications across the care spectrum, in both high and low acuity settings, from surgery and intensive care to the general care unit and emergency departments.
Vitals Plus with NomoLine capnography measures the concentration of expired carbon dioxide (CO2) in an exhaled breath — an immediate indicator of ventilation and respiratory adequacy. The concentration or partial pressure of exhaled CO2 provides information about the body’s metabolism, perfusion, pulmonary circulation and cardiac function. The technology can also be used in conjunction with Capsule’s Early Warning Scoring System (EWSS) to enable another layer of protection and alerts for caregivers when deterioration is beginning to happen.
Masimo is a leading global medical technology company that develops and manufactures innovative noninvasive patient monitoring technologies. Its NomoLine sidestream technology, used with Vitals Plus monitoring, eliminates common problems associated with conventional side stream gas analyzers, including the need for water traps and issues related to their handling.
Capsule’s Vitals Plus monitors a patient and sends validated or unvalidated vital signs data to the electronic health record (EHR) right from the bedside, enabling clinicians to focus on direct caregiving. When linked with Capsule Surveillance, Vitals Plus and other medical devices can feed critical patient information to surveillance algorithms that intelligently alert caregivers to important changes in patient status. The capnography module can be shared between multiple monitors to provide flexibility based on patient needs. The capnography module also will be available as an accessory that can be added to specific Vitals Plus monitors already in hospitals.

Speed Script to Provide Pharmacies with DrFirst’s SmartSuite Technology to Fix Quality and Workflow Issues Caused by Free Text Electronic Prescriptions
For the first time, pharmacies can benefit from the safety features and time savings of the SmartSig and SmartDrug solutions within their pharmacy management system
ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Despite the widespread availability of electronic prescribing, pharmacists are still plagued by the need to manually correct free text found in patient directions (known as “sigs”) for 84% of new prescriptions, which can lead to errors, take time away from patients, and slow down pharmacy productivity. Now, pharmacies can successfully address these safety, service, and efficiency issues through a partnership announced today by health technology pioneer DrFirst and Speed Script, a Kansas-based pharmacy management system and services provider.
Through this agreement, Speed Script is integrating DrFirst’s SmartSig and SmartDrug technology into its suite of pharmacy management solutions (PMS) used by community and long-term care pharmacies countrywide.
SmartSig and SmartDrug will help improve safety and give pharmacists more time for patient counseling by automatically and accurately identifying details of an incoming prescription and matching drugs to the pharmacy. Using DrFirst’s patented artificial intelligence (AI), SmartSig accurately translates 93% of patient directions, helping avoid medication errors and saving 10 seconds or more of work for each drug entered. SmartDrug uses a superior drug-matching algorithm to pair the specific drug in an electronic prescription to the same medication in a pharmacy’s PMS and on its shelves, which is particularly useful when the prescriber and pharmacy use different drug compendia.
“A pharmacy processing 250 prescriptions per day could save more than 5.4 hours per month on these critical tasks alone,” noted Nick Barger, PharmD, principal pharmacist at DrFirst. “That’s more time for the staff to focus on medication therapy management, med sync, counseling, and other patient engagement opportunities.”
Like physicians, pharmacists often have to spend an excessive amount of time on administrative tasks that take away from direct patient interaction, according to Chuck Welch, chief technology officer at Speed Script. “By integrating SmartSig and SmartDrug into our platform, we are giving pharmacists solutions that are proven to save time and enhance patient safety, allowing pharmacists to work at the top of their license and spend more time with patients. We are excited to be the first PMS provider to offer this technology to pharmacies.”
SmartSig and SmartDrug are components of DrFirst’s award-winning SmartSuite AI family of solutions, which hospitals and health systems have been using since 2015 to enhance the quality of more than six million medications per day. “Thanks to this new integration with Speed Script, pharmacies can now realize these safety and time-saving benefits,” said G. Cameron Deemer, president of DrFirst. “We look forward to working with Speed Script to help pharmacies increase efficiencies, reduce errors, and give their pharmacists more time to work directly with patients.”

Critical Insight From CI Security Recognized in Gartner Research 2020 Market Guide for Managed Detection and Response Services
Seattle, WA — CI Security®, the provider of Critical Insight™ Managed Detection and Response (MDR), today announced that it has been identified as a Representative Vendor in the Gartner Market Guide for Managed Detection and Response Services report, named in the Managed Detection and Response category listed in this research.[1]
“Our customers sleep better at night because they have 24×7 security from real experts leveraging great technology. MDR lowers their risk of an impactful breach,” said Garrett Silver, CEO of CI Security. “We believe being named by Gartner as a Representative Vendor reinforces our solution’s value to protect and defend highly-regulated networks and mission critical assets.”
CI Security has been recognized as a Representative Vendor by Gartner for the third year in a row in the 2020 Gartner Market Guide for Managed Detection and Response Services. The company was previously recognized under the company’s former name, Critical Informatics.
“Many MDR providers target a few verticals where they can offer more-specific expertise and services, such as critical infrastructure and manufacturing, or healthcare, which have privacy, safety and reliability risk concerns,” the 2020 Gartner Market Guide for Managed Detection and Response Services explains. “Security leaders are increasingly cognizant that reducing the time to detect a threat is meaningless without a corresponding reduction in the time to respond to a threat to enable a return to a known good state.”
CI Security’s Critical Insight™ MDR reduces threat dwell time from months to minutes, stopping bad actors quickly to minimize harm to an organization. The Managed Detection and Response (MDR) service is purpose-built for highly-regulated networks and combines a dedicated team of Security Analysts with next-generation technologies to provide real-time threat detection, investigation, and response.
The Critical Insight MDR suite of solutions offers a full-service security and compliance suite to existing infrastructure with Managed Detection & Response, Continuous Vulnerability Identification (CVI), and Secure Log Management, and vCISO & SME Advising. The company also recently announced the addition of Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) capabilities, part of the Critical Insight Rapid Quarantine (CIRQ) offering.
