New Ponemon Institute Research Shows Ransomware Attacks on Healthcare Delivery Organizations Can Lead to Increased Mortality Rate
An Independent Analysis of Nearly 600 Providers Also Demonstrates How COVID-19 Has Reduced Their Ability to Defend Against Cyber Threats
Boston, MA – September 22, 2021 – Ponemon Institute, the pre-eminent research center dedicated to privacy, data protection, and information security policy, surveyed 597 IT and IT security professionals to understand how COVID-19 has impacted how healthcare delivery organizations (HDOs) protect patient care and patient information from increasing virulent cyberattacks, especially ransomware. The independent research report, entitled The Impact of Ransomware on Healthcare During COVID-19 and Beyond, was commissioned by Censinet, the leading healthcare IT risk solutions provider.
For the first time, this research shows that ransomware attacks on healthcare organizations may have life-or-death consequences. Nearly one in four healthcare providers reported an increase in mortality rate due to ransomware. The onset of COVID-19 introduced new risk factors to HDOs, including remote work, new systems to support it, staffing challenges, and elevated patient care requirements. The research focuses on helping CIOs, CISOs, and healthcare risk executives understand the extent to which HDOs are being targeted and ascertain the impact of those attacks. Both are covered in-depth in the key findings section of the report.
“Our findings correlated increasing cyberattacks, especially ransomware, with negative effects on patient care, exacerbated by the impact of COVID on healthcare providers,” said Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute. “We also analyzed steps that HDOs are taking to protect patient safety, data, and care operations to determine what is working since so many respondents have been victims of more than one ransomware attack.
The report highlights the following impact of ransomware on patient care:
- Increase in mortality rate
- More complications from medical procedures
- Delays in procedures and tests that resulted in poor outcomes
- Upturn in patients transferred or diverted to other facilities
- Longer lengths of stay
“The combination of data breaches, ransomware attacks, and COVID-19 has created the perfect cybersecurity storm and worst two years on record for IT and security leaders in healthcare,” stated Ed Gaudet, CEO and Founder of Censinet. “The Ponemon Research results are an urgent wake-up call for the healthcare industry to transform its cybersecurity and third-party risk programs or jeopardize patient lives.”
Ponemon Institute and Censinet will present the details of the independent research report in a webinar entitled “Understanding the Impact of Ransomware on Healthcare During COVID-19 and Beyond.” It will be presented live on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at 12:00 PM ET and features Dr. Larry Ponemon and Ed Gaudet, both leading advocates and experts in the healthcare information industry. CHIME Applauds Federal Trade Commission’s Actions to Secure Consumer Health Data
CHIME welcomes clarified definition of “personal health record” and Trade Commission’s intent to monetarily penalize bad actors.
WASHINGTON, DC, September 16, 2021 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), the professional organization for chief information officers and other senior healthcare IT leaders, expresses enthusiastic support for the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC’s) statement from Sept. 15, 2021 clarifying the definition of a personal health record under its Health Breach Notification Rule to include third-party apps and the FTC’s intent to hold non-HIPAA covered third-parties responsible for the disclosure of that personal health information.
These actions from the FTC will make a patient’s data more secure and help ensure that those entities who have a breach of this crucial private data are held accountable. Not only does it hold bad and insecure actors accountable, but it also creates a disincentive that urges all personal health records to strengthen their data security practices. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) information blocking final rule took effect in 2021 and with it brings the awaited delivery of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)-enabled application programming interfaces (APIs) to enable even more data flow, making the FTC’s announcement timely and welcome.
“We at CHIME advocated directly for the expansion of the personal health record definition and for the utilization of the FTC enforcement authority in comments to the agency last year, and we are happy to see our concerns directly addressed,” CHIME Policy Steering Committee Co-Chair Scott MacLean said. “Patient data safety is crucial for maintaining trust in the patient-provider relationship, and ensuring that patients’ data remains safe even when they are outside of the four walls of the hospital only helps strengthen that bond.”
CHIME looks forward to supporting the FTC in its efforts to implement these policy changes. We have long stood as staunch supporters of all efforts in both Congress and the Federal Agencies that ensure patient data stays secure and is never compromised in a way that could jeopardize patient care or trust in the American healthcare system. As we near the end of Fiscal Year 2021 and begin Fiscal Year 2022, CHIME will continue to support all new and continued efforts to build on this week’s important and welcome FTC action.
About CHIME
The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is an executive organization dedicated to serving chief information officers (CIOs), chief medical information officers (CMIOs), chief nursing information officers (CNIOs), chief innovation officers (CIOs), chief digital officers (CDOs) and other senior healthcare IT leaders. With more than 5,000 members in 56 countries plus two U.S. territories and over 150 healthcare IT business partners and professional services firms, CHIME and its three associations provide a highly interactive, trusted environment enabling senior professional and industry leaders to collaborate, exchange best practices, address professional development needs and advocate the effective use of information management to improve the health and care in the communities they serve. SEPTEMBER 10, 2021 ANCILE Solutions, the company behind the market-leading Digital Learning Platform uPerform®, announced its membership in the Arch Collaborative, a KLAS® Research initiative. The Arch Collaborative aims to improve the Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience through shared performance data and collaboration among providers, vendors, and industry leaders.

Medigate and CrowdStrike to Provide Healthcare Organizations with Unified Endpoint Security for Medical IoT Devices
Integration enables comprehensive visibility, enhanced risk management and security enforcement
Brooklyn, New York – September 9, 2021 – Medigate, healthcare’s Best in KLAS IoT Security Provider, today announced it has partnered with CrowdStrike, a leading provider of cloud-delivered endpoint and workload protection, to provide healthcare delivery organizations (HDOs) with the industry’s first consolidated view of threat activity and incident response capability spanning all connected assets.
With the number of medical devices connecting to a hospital’s network increasing on a daily basis, HDOs struggle to maintain visibility of the location and activity of each endpoint that a device may connect to, as well as protect and manage them. Medigate and CrowdStrike solve this challenge by streamlining security responses and improving overall network efficiency.
The CrowdStrike Falcon® platform integrates with the Medigate platform allowing HDOs to perform comprehensive risk management, anomaly detection and enhanced response. The integration provides hospitals with comprehensive visibility into all managed and unmanaged devices along with enhanced threat detection capabilities that power accurate responses.
“We’ve seen a significant number of cyber and ransomware attacks against hospitals in the past year and it will only continue to rise in the future. A hospital’s focus needs to be on patient care, rather than responding to outside threats,” said Matthew Polly, vice president of Worldwide Alliances, Channels and Business Development at CrowdStrike. “Medigate’s unique focus on the healthcare IoT industry is highly effective in helping to reduce attack surfaces. With CrowdStrike and Medigate, HDOs can accurately see, detect, respond and prevent attacks across the IT and clinical landscape to keep their operations and their data – including the patient information – safe.”
“Today’s HDOs face specific challenges that need specialized solutions, not only in securing their vital personnel and devices, but in creating processes that ensure the benefits of connected health. By partnering with CrowdStrike, we are delivering on this vision by empowering HDOs to detect and shut-down attacks,” said Jonathan Langer, chief executive officer of Medigate. “The endpoint protections our joint solution enables positions HDOs for the safe adoption of telehealth, remote patient monitoring and other networked care initiatives.”
Todd Felker, former Director of Information Security at Torrance Memorial Medical Center: “As care delivery continues to fragment, the need for a centrally managed, integrated approach to securing both clinical and non-clinical endpoints is obvious. That’s why the Medigate/CrowdStrike partnership makes so much sense. I’m sure my enthusiasm for the benefits of this partnership are shared across the industry.”
For more details on the Medigate and CrowdStrike partnership, check out the “Endpoint Security for Clinical Networks” solution brief.
About Medigate
Connected devices bring complicated risks, so Medigate created a simple platform to orchestrate and augment HDO security. Medigate gives the confidence to see, secure, and manage all the devices connected to the enterprise network and turn the associated data into a powerful resource for asset management and operational efficiency. It means the end of any compromise between security and usability – put simply, it allows HDOs to connect with confidence.

ENDAVA HELPS TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY TO REOPEN SAFELY IN SLOVENIA WITH DEVELOPMENT OF COVID-19 CERTIFICATE APP
30 AUGUST 2021 – We’re excited to announce today we have helped develop an app for both the Slovenian Border Police and hospitality businesses to check the validity of the EU Digital COVID Certificate when individuals arrive in Slovenia or visit a restaurant or hotel in the country. Endava was selected as a key partner in the project through a formal tender process by the Government and National Health Institute in Slovenia.
Given recent developments with the pandemic, national authorities across the EU are issuing a Digital COVID Certificate for their populations. The certificate generates a QR code that can be either printed or shown on a mobile phone to prove a person is either vaccinated, has had a negative COVID-19 test result, or has recently recovered from COVID-19. The app developed by Endava is validating the certificate to ensure people travelling and visiting hospitality businesses in Slovenia are not spreading or exposed to the virus.
There are currently two versions of the app: the first for use by Slovenian Border Police to check COVID-19 certificates, in any format, to prove a person’s COVID-19 health status. The second version will be rolled out across the hospitality sector in the country following new mandatory regulations to verify the COVID-19 status of people checking in to hotels, restaurants, and events. This version of the apps features more functionality to ensure safety and health measures on-premises while maintaining full data privacy for visitors.
Using open-source code, Endava built and implemented the app in two weeks due to the need for rapid government response. The app is also built to allow for further improvements and developments so it can accommodate future requests from the EU or National Government, such as incorporating different rules for quarantine depending on which country people crossing the Slovenian border are coming from.
John Cotterell, CEO Endava comments: “The pandemic has brought about many challenges for the travel and hospitality industries. Digitising ways to check COVID-19 certificates are key to making that experience feel frictionless for the public as economies reopen, while also ensuring safety standards are upheld as we learn to live with the virus. Recognising the need to transform services quickly and using digital acceleration to create technology that enables businesses to operate will be key to rebuilding industries.”
Endava and the Slovenian Government have a long-standing working relationship. In the past and especially during the challenging year of the pandemic, Endava has partnered with the government on other digital acceleration projects, supporting institutions with the implementation of e-delivery of official documents to avoid unnecessary risks while communicating with the Government and helping with the implementation of tourist vouchers so the country could keep the hospitality industry alive. Also, Endava implemented e-booking and e-communication in the primary health sector and facilitated the filling of e-forms, calculations, and subsidies pay-offs to companies entitled to receive Government support during the pandemic.
