Philips Capsule Medical Device Information Platform reaches device integration milestone
Oct 28, 2021 – Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today announced that, with the release of new device drivers that enable integration and interoperability, Philips Capsule Medical Device Information Platform (MDIP) has exceeded the milestone of integrating with more than 1,000 unique medical device models. Philips Capsule MDIP, which will be integrated into Philips HealthSuite Platform, is now installed in more than 3,000 healthcare facilities globally. Philips Capsule MDIP captures streaming clinical data and transforms it into actionable insights for patient care management aiming to improve collaboration between care teams, streamline clinical workflows, and increase productivity.
Since the early 2021 acquisition of Capsule Technologies, Philips continues to expand its medical device connectivity by adding device drivers to the industry-leading enterprise device integration platform. With these new device drivers, which enable Philips Capsule MDIP to interface with a variety of medical devices and access their data, customers can connect more devices and systems to advance health systems’ digital transformation with intelligent, vendor-agnostic tools that turn complex data in to actionable insights. Drivers are developed in collaboration with device manufacturer partners as well as at the request of individual hospitals and health systems.
“The 1,000+ device connectivity milestone serves as testament to Philips Capsule MDIP’s capabilities that support the data digitalization needs of today’s healthcare providers,” said Elad Benjamin, general manager of Clinical Data Services at Philips. “We are proud to continually work with our customers to enable more hospitals and systems to experience the benefits of medical device data integration.”
Without a vendor-neutral solution like Philips Capsule MDIP, hospitals may have to turn to customized medical device integration (MDI) solutions, which can be expensive and time-consuming to develop and implement. Such proprietary solutions also often limit integration and interoperability options to a smaller range of technologies, systems, and suppliers, resulting in the need to maintain and support multiple MDI systems. Philips Capsule MDIP eliminates the need for multiple MDI solutions by offering a comprehensive and scalable device integration platform.
Philips Capsule MDIP can enable providers to utilize device data for electronic health record (EHR) documentation, clinical surveillance, decision support, and research. Device data streamed to a virtual ICU workstation can be processed and analyzed to detect emergent patient conditions and generate actionable alerts, helping to reduce the alarm fatigue that can contribute to clinician burnout. Caregivers using decision support applications at the point of care can benefit from having more comprehensive information available for evaluation. While researchers can thoroughly test and verify the effectiveness of clinical methods, procedures, and treatments.

ER Patients, Families Benefit from New ER App
LVHN is first health system in the U.S. to offer Vocera EASE ER to help families follow patient’s progress in ER
October 26, 2021 – Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) is the first health system in the U.S. to deploy the new Vocera EASE ER app that allows families to follow a loved one’s emergency room progress right on their phone from anywhere.
LVHN is also the first to integrate the secure, cloud-based app with its electronic health record system.
Opens in new tabVocera Communications, Inc., a leader in clinical communication and workflow solutions, created the technology to improve patient and family communication.
How EASE ER works
Vocera EASE ER automatically delivers secure, automated messages to patients and their loved ones based on real-time status updates from hospital electronic health records. Examples of 25 automated messages include updates on room assignments, scheduled tests and more. The app is not intended for use with seriously ill or injured patients where hospital staff is traditionally in more direct contact with patient families.
Patients must sign a consent form to participate in EASE and patients decide who will receive updates on their treatment.
The emergency department at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Cedar Crest is the first hospital in the LVHN system to implement the app. Launched Oct. 6, more than 2,600 messages were sent in the first week of operation to loved ones in 11 states as far away as Hawaii, California and Florida. Plans include expanding the app to LVHN’s other hospitals as well as offering messaging in Spanish and other languages.
Benefits
“The app helps provide consistent communication with patients and families between in-person interactions with clinicians and staff, helping patients know when and what to expect next. That’s reassuring and provides peace of mind,” says Richard MacKenzie, MD, senior vice chair of emergency and hospital medicine at LVHN. “This enhancement of the patient experience is what our community rightly expects of its premier health care partner.”
LVHN’s EASE webpage, LVHN.org/ease-app, contains helpful information and offers links to download the app to a mobile device.
Clinical and information technology teams at LVH–Cedar Crest worked closely with the Vocera EASE professional services team to automate messages based on patient status. Messages sent from Vocera EASE ER disappear after 60 seconds of screen time, and nothing is saved on the recipients’ mobile devices, adding an extra level of security. The app, which can be used on Android and iOS devices, is free for patients and their loved ones.
Raising the bar
“We are excited to work with the Vocera EASE team to expand the ER app to emergency departments across our health network,” said Michael Minear, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, LVHN. “This is another example of our focus on patients and families to deliver modern digital capability to enhance the patient experience.”
LVHN previously partnered with Vocera in 2017 when it launched the company’s EASE app to provide operating room updates to patient families. Unlike the EASE ER app, EASE messages from the operating room are generated by staff and are not automated and linked to the hospital’s electronic health records system.

Independent Health Partners with DrFirst to Give its Prescribers Access to Real-Time Prescription Benefit Check for Covered Patients
Health plan seeks to eliminate sticker shock and minimize medication cost barriers for its nearly 400K members with myBenefitCheck
BUFFALO, N.Y., and ROCKVILLE, Md., October 18, 2021 – Independent Health, a not-for-profit health plan serving western New York, is partnering with healthcare technology pioneer DrFirst to share drug pricing information for the first time with prescribers in real time and at the point of care, as announced at HLTH 2021 today.
To help ensure that cost is less of a barrier to members taking their prescribed medications, Independent Health is making DrFirst’s myBenefitCheck price transparency solution available to prescribers whose patients are covered by its insurance plan. myBenefitCheck gives prescribers access to up-to-date, patient-specific drug coverage information, including required prior authorizations and out-of-pocket costs for prescribed medications and therapeutically appropriate alternatives.
“Cost can be a significant barrier to medication adherence,” said Martin Burruano, vice president, pharmacy, Independent Health. “Because myBenefitCheck gives prescribers and their patients a convenient way to review benefits information during a healthcare visit, we can eliminate sticker shock when members pick up their medications at the pharmacy. This partnership with DrFirst advances our efforts to enable affordable access to quality healthcare for all of our members.”
myBenefitCheck works within providers’ e-prescribing workflows to deliver patient-specific drug benefits information during the clinical encounter. Armed with accurate and comprehensive information, a physician can have an informed discussion with a patient and select the most affordable and appropriate drug therapy based on the individual’s situation.
“By providing myBenefitCheck to prescribers and giving them up-to-the-minute, patient-specific information on drug costs while they are face-to-face with patients, Independent Health is helping to minimize the financial obstacles that keep patients from filling their prescriptions,” said G. Cameron Deemer, president of DrFirst. “We commend Independent Health for its commitment to empowering clinicians with innovative solutions that increase access to affordable, quality healthcare.”
DrFirst was the first in the industry to provide price transparency to healthcare providers and has processed more than 134 million transactions to date. The company has access to drug pricing information through broad relationships with top pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and other organizations and partners with more than 275 electronic health record (EHR) systems, including the country’s largest vendors. myBenefitCheck is offered as a standard function within DrFirst’s medication management platform or can be integrated on its own into any EHR.
Independent Health has served western New York for more than 40 years. Its commitment to the health of the communities it serves is reflected in its high-quality service to members, providers, and partners. Independent Health’s Medicare HMO and PPO plans are rated 5 Stars by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, its customer satisfaction rating is 95%, and U.S. News & World Report recognized it as a 2021 Best Medicare Advantage Plan in New York.

Censinet Advances Cybersecurity Program for Digital Health Innovators with Enhanced Support for Education, Advisory Services, Analytics, and Marketing
Company to Formally Recognize Cybersecurity Transparent Pioneers at HLTH 2021 Health Innovation Event in Boston
HLTH Conference, Boston, MA – October 18, 2021 – Censinet, the leading provider of healthcare IT risk solutions, today announced the expansion of its Cybersecurity Program for Digital Health Innovators. This program now includes the formal recognition of “Cybersecurity Transparent” pioneers in partnership with KLAS Research, as well as new risk management and cybersecurity advisory services, program maturity analytics, enhancements to cybersecurity best practices, expanded educational content, and branding/marketing program elements for promotional use.
Over the past four years, Censinet has been working with leading healthcare accelerator programs and digital health innovators with an effective set of tools, strategic guidance, and best practices that significantly reduce risks to regulated data, care operations, and patient safety. Inaugural members of the program include MassChallenge HealthTech, Cedars-Sinai Accelerator, KidsX, and TechSpring.
“Together with KLAS Research, Censinet is committed to helping digital health innovators quickly understand their cybersecurity risk posture, identify and close gaps in overall information security program maturity, and continuously monitor and mitigate risks as they occur,” said Ed Gaudet, CEO and Founder of Censinet. “The new additions to our Cybersecurity Program for Digital Health Innovators and ‘Cybersecurity Transparent’ designation enable these entrepreneurs to quickly bring their innovations to market without introducing risk to patient care, data or operations.”
The healthcare industry is adopting new digital health solutions at a record pace as delivery organizations look to improve quality of care, enhance the patient experience, expand patient safety initiatives, increase efficiency, and reduce costs. The pandemic has accelerated the demand for innovation both within healthcare delivery organizations and among those vendors who service them. However, the past 18 months have also shown the increasing vulnerability of all parties involved in patient care as data breaches and ransomware attacks have increased markedly, according to the recent Ponemon Institute study sponsored by Censinet. Full details of this report, The Impact of Ransomware on Healthcare During COVID-19 and Beyond, can be downloaded from: censinet.com/ponemon-report-covid-impact-ransomware.
“Cybersecurity posture is a critical element when evaluating vendors and should be viewed through the same lens as price, value proposition, and customer feedback. Cybersecurity Transparent is a rigorous process that ensures that healthcare solution providers have critical IT security programs demanded by providers, and accelerates the adoption of innovative and secure solutions via a highly efficient process,” said Adam Gale, President of KLAS. “Our partnership with Censinet has improved risk postures for both vendors and providers and is helping to drive a more secure healthcare ecosystem.”

SURVEY OF CHIME AND AEHIS MEMBERSHIP FINDS WIDESPREAD CYBERSECURITY IMPACTS ON HEALTHCARE; NEED FOR MORE GOVERNMENT SUPPORT
Almost two-thirds of survey respondents report having suffered from a security incident in the last year, and three in four would welcome federal assistance.ANN ARBOR, MI, Oct. 18, 2021 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Security (AEHIS) fielded a survey of its membership’s Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) to determine the impact cybersecurity incidents had on healthcare in the last year, finding widespread impacts on organizations and the need for more education and resources.Cybersecurity threats and attacks have steadily increased over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. This concerning trend indicates that the nation’s healthcare systems remain squarely in the crosshairs of sophisticated threat actors. Congress and the Executive Branch have begun the process of shoring up the nation’s critical infrastructure against cyberthreat actors but have often left healthcare on the periphery of their discussions. The survey from CHIME and AEHIS confirms the need for healthcare to have a seat at the table as one of the most vulnerable and often-targeted pieces of critical infrastructure.“From this survey it is clear that healthcare providers will need several tools in their arsenal to fight an ever-escalating and complex battle that is being brought directly to their doorstep and threatens their delivery of patient care,” said AEHIS Advisory Board Chair Will Long. “More resources, education, and ongoing support for our sector are needed.”Only one-third of the surveyed CISOs indicated they had suffered no security impacts in the past 12 months, with almost half reporting they had been impacted by a phishing email or business email compromise and almost 30% saying they’d faced a system or electronic health record (EHR) outage. Most concerning, 15% of respondents reported a patient safety incident tied to a cyber event, and 10% experienced the need to divert patients to another care setting, a trend that has continued to rise in recent years. One anonymous respondent bleakly reported, “There is no end in sight for the growth of cyber risk and [the] exploitation of critical infrastructure.” Another stated that reporting requirements and other pressing issues are impacting their ability to secure their systems, “We are overwhelmed with unfunded federal mandates. Our organization is struggling through the pandemic while having mandate after mandate applied. [This is] not sustainable.”As Congress deliberates additional ways to support critical infrastructures, including the healthcare sector, responses from the survey point to a strong need for greater support and education from federal authorities. Only 37% of respondents were aware that Congress passed a law in January that gives credit for the use of cybersecurity best practices and over 70% stated they needed additional assistance in the form of federal aid or assistance from a regional extension center with cyber expertise. As healthcare providers continue to fight these attacks, it is also notable that survey responses confirm the cost of cyber insurance is increasing. Over 80% of respondents reported the costs of their cyber insurance increased over the past year, with one-in-six seeing an increase of 100% or greater and over 20% seeing an increase as high as 50%.With providers facing an exponentially increasing number of attacks and an increase in the cost of insurance to protect themselves, it is clear now, more than ever, that Congress and the Executive Branch must work to give providers the resources, education and funding they need to ensure that our healthcare system is protected against these pervasive and persistent attacks. To achieve this, strong collaboration between the public and private sectors will be absolutely necessary.More information on the survey and additional findings are available here.About CHIME

NewYork-Presbyterian’s Daniel Barchi to Receive CIO of the Year Award from CHIME
ANN ARBOR, MI, Oct. 13, 2021 – From Daniel Barchi’s time in the U.S. Navy to his years of outstanding work as a healthcare leader, he has demonstrated remarkable talent elevated by a willingness to serve and put others first. Barchi’s visionary outlook has forged a new paradigm for how a CIO’s leadership role can make a significant difference to a healthcare organization’s mission. His dedication to digital transformation has accelerated national adoption of electronic medical records (EMR), artificial intelligence and telemedicine. In recognition of Barchi’s exceptional contributions to digital healthcare, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) has named Barchi the 2021 CIO of the Year. The award is given annually to a CIO who has demonstrated significant leadership and a lifetime of achievement in the healthcare IT industry. The recipient is selected by the CIO of the Year Award committee comprised of past recipients and is approved by the Board of Directors of CHIME.
Barchi’s experience prepared him to help lead the clinical response to the greatest challenge that healthcare has faced in a lifetime. When COVID-19 struck in early 2020, Barchi and his team expanded telemedicine capacity five-fold, developed predictive models for ventilator use, and helped double intensive care unit (ICU) bed capacity to allow NewYork-Presbyterian to care for thousands of COVID-19 positive patients. He is committed to development of future leaders; having served as CIO at three academic medical centers, he has been an active mentor to members of his team, ten of whom have gone on to become healthcare CIOs themselves.
“Daniel Barchi has distinguished himself as a leader in healthcare technology. He is an innovator who uses AI and other advanced systems to solve operational needs and improve clinical quality,” said CHIME Board of Trustees Chair John Kravitz, CIO of Geisinger Health. “His vision for rapid implementation and standardized systems throughout healthcare organizations is being adopted as a global best practice.”
“Daniel shares his insight with our CIO community in countless ways,” said CHIME President and CEO Russell Branzell. “In the early days of COVID, he shared lessons learned with CIOs and other healthcare leaders across the nation in phone calls, texts, emails, and even podcasts to prepare them for what was to come. He has also been an early proponent of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics, and he helps other CIOs recognize their potential for improved quality and patient outcomes.”
Barchi is CIO and Group Senior Vice President at NewYork-Presbyterian, an integrated academic health care system affiliated with two top-ranked medical schools, Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Barchi’s career represents the highest achievement in what a CIO can do with technology, with people, and as a healthcare leader. He has been an active member of CHIME since he first became a CIO in 2006. He is a member of CHIME’s Policy Steering Committee and Foundation Development Committee. He speaks nationally on healthcare technology issues, has served on the faculty of CHIME’s CIO Boot Camp, and is a frequent contributor to CHIME’s Innovation Beyond the Edge programs.
Barchi will be honored on October 28 at the CHIME21 Fall Forum in San Diego, California. More information about the CHIME21 Fall Forum is available here.

Pivot Point Consulting Issues Q4 2021 Quarterly Trends Report
The latest Quarterly Pivot report outlines emerging healthcare and IT trends for industry executives
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Pivot Point Consulting, a Vaco Company and #1 Best in KLAS Overall IT Services Firm (2020), today released the latest edition of its Quarterly Pivot report. The insights and innovations included in the report outline where the healthcare industry stands in the final quarter of the year.
“As we head into the home stretch of 2021, the healthcare industry will continue to face the wide-ranging ripple effects associated with the ongoing pandemic,” said Rachel Marano, Pivot Point Consulting Managing Partner and Co-Founder. “Looking ahead, we anticipate the ‘Great Resignation’ will have a significant impact on healthcare labor dynamics, while other factors will linger such as technology companies acting as potential industry disrupters and enhanced federal funding for digital health.”
The Quarterly Pivot highlights are included below. For the complete Q4 Quarterly Pivot, including additional insights such as industry innovations and important events from Pivot Point Consulting’s subject matter experts, please download the full report here.
Managed Services:
The “Great Resignation” and Its Impact on Healthcare: The summer of 2021 continued the trend of labor departure, with healthcare and tech being some of the hardest-hit industries. Resignations in healthcare have risen at 4.5% and technology fields followed suit at 3.6%, both well above industry norms. These departures particularly impact teams supporting clinical systems, including EHRs.
Mergers and Acquisitions and Managed Services:While health systems expand their footprints across their localities, implementing clinical systems and platforms can be extremely burdensome and place enormous strain on existing IT resources. We see many organizations looking at unique approaches to shift support to optimization workflows and outcomes.
Virtual Care:
Competitive Marketing:As more retailers like Walmart and CVS enter the healthcare market, they bring increased access to services, and thus competition. These retailers bring robust marketing and significant brand recognition, which is drawing patients away from traditional health centers. To maintain competitiveness, health centers must adapt by recognizing the consumerist nature of the new entrants and increasing their marketing prowess through direct marketing via omnichannel methods, along with a strong social media presence.
Increased Digital Health Funding and Governmental Support: As signaled by Medicare proposing telehealth codes be permanently added to the physician fee schedule in 2022, these services are here to stay. In addition, numerous agencies have released funding to support the initiation and growth of Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) programs throughout the country, including the Veterans Administration and USDA for rural health issues, namely access to care, with telehealth being a large driver in resolving these issues.
Data Analytics:
Amazon continues to expand its healthcare reach and take advantage of its technology platforms and massive amounts of data. Amazon recently announced it will begin providing in-person and telehealth care in 20 major U.S. cities in 2022 with a focus on underserved populations. This expansion is expected to have a positive impact on data insights for patient populations who may have been previously underserved.Data & Value-Based Care: As more healthcare systems continue to move toward Value-Based Care, demand for data and analytics infrastructures has never been higher. Healthcare organizations are moving their platforms to the cloud to improve data sharing and data analytics capabilities. Additionally, RPM is a platform that continues to grow in this space. Healthcare systems are expected to integrate RPM data to develop a holistic approach to evaluating patient health and driving overall quality.
HIE Growth:As Value-Based Care models continue to grow, providers in rural areas continue to struggle with standardized mechanisms to provide population health data to public health agencies. Many of these providers will look to join Health Information Exchanges (HIE) to address gaps in gathering patient data.
Epic’s challenges with AI algorithms are driving healthcare organizations to new methods for real-time clinical decision support. This will present an opportunity for new technologies to emerge that will integrate analytics platforms directly into the EHR and seamlessly into provider workflows.
Disruptors Experiencing Disruption: Google recently shut down its Google Health Division, while Apple and Amazon have also faced setbacks as they seek to expand into healthcare. Previously, these tech giants have touted their investments in healthcare, but these setbacks show the difficulty of entering the complexity of HIT. These giants continue, however, to push forward on different fronts. Don’t be surprised if they begin to offer new healthcare products and services and re-emerge as leaders in the space even though it may appear they are slowing down their efforts for now.
EHR:
Epic’s reach continues, signs Walmart and HCN:Both Walmart and HCN recently announced their respective launches of Epic and associated planned rollouts. Walmart is first implementing Epic in four of its new Walmart Health Centers. HCN’s implementation will reach 2.6 million patients across 16 states.Athenahealth Owners Exploring IPO or Sale: Veritas Capital and Elliott Investment Management acquired athenahealth three years ago. Now the firms are looking to sell the company or offer an initial public offering. The capital firms are targeting a $20 billion valuation.
EHR Vendors Requiring Vaccination: Major EHR vendors Epic and Cerner announced that vaccinations will be required for all US-based employees. Epic made the announcement in August with a deadline of all employees being vaccinated of October 1. When announced in August, Epic reported 97% of its staff were already fully vaccinated. Cerner also recently announced a similar requirement with a deadline of December 8.
ERP:
Lessons Learned from the Pandemic: Virtually all industries are working to shore up their supply chain processes and systems to help ensure a consistent experience for vendors and for customers. This is especially important in healthcare to ensure a seamless delivery of quality clinical care to patients and provide necessary protective equipment for healthcare workers. The good news is that many organizations have started building a supply chain roadmap to implement changes based on lessons learned from other industries.
RCM:
RPM Reimbursement Here to Stay:With CMS’s clarifications on RPM reimbursement, healthcare organizations will continue to implement new monitoring technology, and implement the clinical infrastructure to support care and its subsequent reimbursement.Digital Health Strategy: Spurred by expanding telehealth services and access to smartphones, CFOs and other healthcare executives are leaning into developing digital health strategies, and healthcare organizations are creating new executive roles to lead these efforts. As healthcare services continue to commoditize, CFOs are looking to gain an ROI by providing patients quicker access to care, across a wider geographic footprint.
“The healthcare landscape is only growing more competitive as the year comes to a close, which is why it’s important for leaders at both payer and provider organizations to keep their attention on emerging trends,” said Marano. “The pandemic has resulted in significant challenges for the industry as a whole, but also has presented the opportunity for meaningful change if leaders embrace innovative business strategies. As always, Pivot Point Consulting remains committed to assisting its clients to find the best path forward for success.”
