AEHIA Announces Stacey Johnston, MD as AEHIA Board Chair to Lead Association’s Efforts to Re-focus from Applications to Data
ANN ARBOR, MI, May 26, 2022 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) has added a prominent executive to the volunteer leadership team of its Association for Executives in Healthcare Information Applications (AEHIA). Stacey Johnston, MD, Vice President, Chief Application Officer (CAO) and Epic Program Executive of Baptist Health has joined the professional association as Board Chair to lead its evolution to becoming more focused on data. Dr. Johnston’s experience is integral to taking AEHIA in its new direction and serving the rising needs for collaboration on data science and data sharing across the healthcare industry.
CHIME launched AEHIA in 2014 as the first professional organization serving healthcare’s senior information technology applications leaders during the time Meaningful Use and electronic health records implementation and optimization were industry priorities. Since that launch, there has been a significant shift in focus from “applications” to “data,” and AEHIA is now positioned to reflect that transition.
“After an extended search, with the support of the AEHIA Board and CHIME team members, I believe we have found the perfect Chair to re-focus and re-energize the AEHIA community. Dr. Johnston brings a level of energy, experience and expertise that will re-launch AEHIA,” said David Finn, Vice President of AEHIS, AEHIT and AEHIA for CHIME. “As a physician, she has served as CMIO, as Epic Program Executive and Chief Application Officer. She not only met but exceeded all our hopes—applications, data, informatics—from both a clinical perspective and the IT standpoint.”
Previously to being named as Baptist Health’s Vice President, CAO, Dr. Johnston served as Baptist Health’s Vice President, Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) which followed her role as associate CMIO for hospitalist informatics. A board-certified family physician and a member of the Baptist Hospitalist Group, Dr. Johnston has extensive experience in the use of electronic medical records, clinical technologies across a broad spectrum of clinical settings and knowledge of electronic medical record infrastructure and is committed to collaborating with senior healthcare executives to share best practices around IT-enabled clinical and business transformation.
“I am excited to take on this leadership role at AEHIA because the future of healthcare relies on creating transformation at the intersection of clinical/revenue cycle applications and the data driven from these systems. Through these applications, we create data that can provide insights that enable healthcare organizations to create the digitally enabled and consumer-driven healthcare of the future,” said Dr. Johnston. “As a hospitalist, I have seen firsthand how data-driven decisions can not only improve the quality of my care but can improve both the patient experience through frictionless care models and the caregiver experience through machine learning and integrated systems.”
Prior to her tenure at Baptist Health, Dr. Johnston was the CMIO and Medical Director of the hospitalist program at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, SC, where she also served on the Board of Trustees. She is a graduate of Emory University School of Medicine and completed her residency at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, GA.

CHIME and WEDI Launch the “THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK” Campaign to Arm Consumers Against Loss of Health Information
ANN ARBOR, MI, and WASHINGTON, DC, May 23, 2022 — As patients increasingly permit access to their health information by way of third-party applications (apps), the need to ensure the privacy and security of this data has exponentially grown. Many of these apps are not covered entities under HIPAA and are not bound by any current privacy and security requirements. In response, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) announce the launch of the “THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK” campaign.
The two organizations fully support a system where data flows seamlessly to improve access and achieve better health outcomes, but they recognize consumers need to understand how to mitigate their risk. This initiative, which includes a 5-step checklist, is designed to educate and empower consumers to take the appropriate precautions prior to the transmission of health information to third-party apps. The checklist is non-branded and is made available at no cost to any organization seeking to educate and protect their constituents.
“With new federal regulations allowing patients to direct providers and health plans to share their health information to a third-party app, there is concern that unintended disclosures of sensitive data could occur,” said Russell Branzell, President & CEO of CHIME. “Providing consumers with this simple-to-use checklist with recommended actions they can take before transmitting their data is a service we feel will help consumers protect themselves and their personal information.”
“We hope that critical consumer and patient organizations personalize this resource with their brand, widely disseminate it to their members and strongly encourage its use,” stated Charles Stellar, WEDI President and CEO. “The “THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK” checklist will be made freely available on the CHIME and WEDI websites. We urge providers, health plans and health care vendors to leverage their communication channels to distribute this collateral directly to consumers.”
Learn more about this initiative or download the customizable “THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK” PDF resource on the CHIME website here or on the WEDI website here.

Cerner Collaboration to Increase Access to Cancer Clinical Trials
The company’s Learning Health Network teams with Elligo Health Research and Freenome to Advance Early Cancer Detection
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – May 18, 2022 –Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ: CERN), Elligo Health Research® and Freenome are collaborating to enable a clinical trial through the Learning Health Network to help advance early cancer detection. Together they will be using the research-activated network of health systems, real-world data (RWD) and multiomics technology, developed by Freenome, with the goal to help accelerate early cancer detection.
This will be one of the first cancer screening trials available to Cerner’s rapidly growing Learning Health Network (LHN), a group of more than 85 diverse health systems across the U.S., who are working together to help advance research and increase equitable access to clinical trials by contributing de-identified data. Trial participation will help LHN members bring innovative cancer prevention testing to the communities they serve – no matter their size or where they are located. Freenome, Cerner and Elligo will team up to use RWD to drive the Sanderson Study, an upcoming clinical trial to detect multiple types of cancer which is IRB approved and uses new multiomics technology.
Early cancer detection has been shown to not only increase survival rates, but earlier diagnosis can help lower treatment morbidity and improve quality of life — for both patients and caregivers — compared to later diagnosis. Other studies estimated significant cancer treatment cost savings from early detection, approximately $26 billion per year in the U.S.
Elligo Health Research, the largest healthcare-enabling research organization, will work with LHN members to accelerate site activation and enroll a large volume of diverse patients much faster than traditional recruitment models. Spanning the U.S., the collaboration will enable diverse patient participation, across a wide variety of demographics, socio-economic factors and all sizes of communities.
“The clinical research Cerner will enable has the potential to advance early cancer detection so patients can seek timely treatment and improve their chances of survival,” said Christy Dueck, vice president, Cerner Enviza. “Data and technology have the power to help clinicians and researchers expand therapeutic knowledge and accelerate their development and delivery, which can improve people’s lives around the world.”
Freenome’s multiomics platform combines both tumor and non-tumor signals with machine learning to detect cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages using a standard blood draw. Freenome, a privately held biotech company, is pioneering a patient-centric framework for multi-cancer early detection with single cancer and multi-cancer test baskets, using the same multiomics platform. This will more closely align with existing diagnostic care pathways to tailor future testing recommendations to individuals and optimize for clinical utility, reducing diagnostic odysseys.
“Our long-term goal is to advance multi-cancer products into clinical practice to save more lives,” said Riley Ennis, chief product officer, Freenome. “This collaboration with Cerner and Elligo will enable us to generate real-world evidence and make our clinical studies available to more people, to save more lives.”
“Faster clinical studies mean faster speed to market, which means more patients getting the medicine and technologies they need, sooner,” said John Potthoff, Ph.D., CEO, Elligo. “Elligo’s platform, together with Cerner’s Learning Health Network, has the ability to significantly accelerate startup and engagement with thousands of patients for any study. We’re thrilled to be part of this collaborative effort to advance important life-saving and life-changing early cancer detection technology.”
About Cerner
Cerner’s health technologies connect people and information systems at thousands of contracted provider facilities worldwide dedicated to creating smarter and better care for individuals and communities. Recognized globally for innovation, Cerner assists clinicians in making care decisions and assists organizations in managing the health of their populations. The company also offers a connected clinical and financial ecosystem to help manage day-to-day revenue functions, as well as a wide range of services to support clinical, financial and operational needs, focused on people. UpStream Moves to the Innovaccer Health Cloud to Accelerate Transformation of U.S. Healthcare
Innovative provider will use the Innovaccer Health Cloud’s unified patient record to support value-based, whole-person care delivery for older patients and people living with chronic conditions.
SAN FRANCISCO—May 12, 2022— Innovaccer Inc., the Health Cloud company, announced that UpStream Healthcare, the fastest growing primary healthcare solution provider in the country, has chosen the Innovaccer® Health Cloud, its Data Activation Platform, and entire application suite to accelerate UpStream’s mission to transform U.S. healthcare by driving better outcomes for patients and improving financial outcomes for providers.
UpStream’s unique approach to whole-person care connects the entire healthcare ecosystem—the doctors, pharmacists, registered nurses, concierges, social workers, behavioral health case managers, and support staff —into unified, specifically dedicated care teams for every patient. By leveraging Innovaccer’s 2022 Best in KLAS data platform, UpStream will be able to equip these unified care teams with unified patient records that provide a centralized, longitudinal view of the patient.
These 360-degree patient views—available to every member of UpStream’s care teams at every stage of every patient’s journey—will be woven into custom chronic care workflows. This holistic view will provide actionable insights at the point of care that help improve outcomes, employ AI to assess and predict health risks to help keep patients out of the hospital, and use clinically contextual patient engagement throughout the care continuum to help improve chronic care management and overall experience.
“Traditionally, many practices don’t have the experience or resources to take on the financial risks associated with value-based care models, especially for older, higher risk populations,” said Lucas Sahm, Chief Information Officer at UpStream. “UpStream is deeply rooted in data, which makes partnering with Innovaccer a logical step for us, because we speak the same language and have the same goal: to connect, curate, and make better use of healthcare data to improve patient outcomes, improve the patient experience, while also improving financial outcomes for providers.”
UpStream’s participating providers receive Guaranteed Advanced Payments for Quality (UpStream’s GAP-Q™) based on performance, guaranteeing payments in advance to deliver better outcomes for their patients. The payment structure increases practice income while providing the financial stability to allow practices to continue to invest in the future of value-based care. By working in partnership with healthcare practices, clinics, and now Innovaccer, UpStream can offer a comprehensive, risk-free solution for physicians that finances, delivers, and sustains better outcomes for all stakeholders and their patients.
“It’s exciting to be an integral part of UpStream’s ambitious and innovative approach to value-based care,” said Abhinav Shashank, cofounder and Innovaccer CEO. “Their unique concierge care model illustrates how innovation can bring together patients, providers, and care teams like never before, transforming the experience and improving outcomes for all. We’re honored that UpStream chose Innovaccer as their partner to accelerate healthcare transformation and lead the way to value.”

Innovaccer PRM, recognized by KLAS in February 2022 as a leading CRM solution, is the industry’s first and only solution to integrate consumer and clinical data with claims, SDoH, and behavioral interaction data to transform consumer engagement. By bringing all of this data together on Innovaccer® Health Cloud’s Data Activation Platform, providers gain the comprehensive, unified insights they need to power truly consumer-centric care.
“If there are any healthcare leaders in the marketing, medical or population health sectors that are looking to completely unify the consumer health journey from start to finish, let’s talk,” said Druckenmiller. “Because that’s exactly what we’re doing at Innovaccer. We’ve addressed the health data problem, and it’s consumerism or bust. Right data. Right message. Right person. Every time. Accurate, consistent and reliable. Embracing consumer-centricity in this manner will yield growth and savings potential for providers with real ironclad value that is impossible to ignore.”
Druckenmiller brings a unique blend of healthcare industry experience and e-business perspective. He worked for leading consumer brands, where he molded their global e-commerce footprint. He moved to the agency world, which led to his first forays into healthcare and managing digital technology programs for prominent global pharmaceutical companies and health plans. That experience hooked him on healthcare, and Druckenmiller became the “voice of Evariant” for over a decade. He led many of their top CRM projects, and when the company was acquired by Healthgrades, he continued as SVP of strategy and innovation.
“We are very excited to have Gary on board helping to drive our PRM solution and growth,” said Abhinav Shashank, cofounder and CEO of Innovaccer. “Engagement solutions have traditionally been built around legacy CRM models. Gary understands healthcare’s need to take patient relationships to a higher level with Innovaccer PRM, which unifies the patient record to bring clinical, financial, and experiential together for whole-person care. Having this end-to-end unified view can help providers attract new consumers, engage existing patients, improve patient retention, and improve care coordination.”

Innovaccer Unveils ACO REACH Accelerator Toolkit
Technology-enabled solutions blending best-of-breed population health management and SDoH tools with expert services and consulting to help providers succeed with ACO REACH
SAN FRANCISCO—May 12, 2022—Innovaccer Inc., the Health Cloud company, launched its ACO REACH Accelerator toolkit, an innovative technology-enabled suite designed to help accountable care organizations succeed in the ACO REACH model recently announced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The ACO REACH model was developed by CMS to advance health equity by bringing accountable care to underserved communities, and to support momentum around provider-led organizations moving from fee-for-service to risk-based payment models.
Innovaccer’s ACO REACH Accelerator toolkit brings a suite of technology and services together that can help providers jump start and excel at this new value-based model: the Innovaccer Health Cloud’s Data Activation Platform, Innovaccer’s industry-leading population health management solution, Innovaccer’s world-class population health analytics; and Innovaccer’s comprehensive SDoH solution for identifying, understanding, and mitigating social determinants—an absolute essential for supporting health equity, access to care, and community health. These innovative technologies will be complemented with a selection of tools, consulting, and advisory services that can provide a comprehensive approach to becoming and excelling as a REACH ACO.
“Many providers are interested in becoming REACH ACOs, but they’ll need the right people, processes, and technologies to help develop, implement, and optimize their shared savings strategies,” says Dr. Brian Silverstein, chief population health officer at Innovaccer. “As a technology-enabled service, the ACO REACH Accelerator toolkit offers our customers an array of tools and services intended to help them succeed in ACO REACH’s total capitation program.”
Specifically, Innovaccer’s ACO REACH Accelerator toolkit can help provide:
- Population Health Management: Innovaccer’s Population Health Management, an intuitive and customizable solution that can help REACH ACOs achieve better health outcomes, improve the patient experience, and reduce costs. The solution’s analytics, data integration, and automated care management workflow components help ACOs improve care management and patient engagement.
- SDoH Management: Innovaccer’s Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) supports actionable social determinants of health (SDoH) with SVI scores down to the individual patient level, which helps paint an accurate picture of risk and optimize care. With our proprietary methodology, providers will be equipped to stratify the social risk of their population by identifying patients’ susceptibility to socioeconomic factors that can impact population health; integrating these factors to create a holistic patient record that drives targeted social interventions; identifying and trending social determinants regionally or nationally to develop mitigation programs; and more.
- Financial Management Services: Our roadmap includes Innovaccer partners who will be able to provide claims adjudication; financial analytics by Innovaccer experts to help equip ACOs to establish downstream contracts with participating and preferred providers, provide total cost of care forecasting; forecast performance with benchmarks and assumptions from similar organizations; perform sensitivity testing on risk, quality, and expenses; deploy program adjustments such as risk-scores, quality measures, provider incentives; and more to be made available over the coming year.
- Expert Consulting and Advisory Services: Our growing network of experienced consulting partners will be able to provide expert advice to help providers develop and optimize their shared savings strategies, and provide risk readiness assessment services to prepare for and best align their organization for success with ACO REACH over the coming year.
- Social Assistance Services: Digital access to a broad network of low-cost or no-cost community resources. Providers can easily connect patients to the largest national network of free or low-cost community resources, addressing over 58 social factors across more than 300 service types. Application tools provide integrated communication between care managers, community resource workers, and patients. Point-of-care integration provides support for closed-loop referrals between providers and social workers.
“Innovaccer is offering a population health platform that takes into consideration some of the new driving factors under the ACO REACH model,” said Tamra Ruymann, MBA, chief of digital health for Physicians of Southwest Washington (PSW). “These include social determinants of health assessments and demographic data collection to advance health equity for ACOs.”
