Temple Health Embeds AI-Powered Medication Management Solution in its Epic EHR
Medication History and Prescription Price Transparency Solutions from DrFirst Fill Data Gaps, Prevent Errors, and Support Patient Adherence to Medication Therapy
Rockville, Md. – June 21, 2023 – Hospitals and health systems have long struggled with inefficient medication reconciliation processes and a lack of price transparency that often leads to patients abandoning their prescriptions at the pharmacy counter when surprised by the costs. Today, health technology pioneer DrFirst announced that the 900-bed Temple University Health System (Temple Health) is answering both challenges by integrating AI-powered medication history and real-time prescription benefit checking solutions into its Epic electronic health record (EHR) system.
DrFirst’s MedHx with SmartSuite uses clinical-grade AI to automatically fill gaps in patient medication history records, relieving a burden for clinicians and creating a more accurate medication reconciliation process—one of The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals. The myBenefitCheck solution gives Temple Health’s providers improved insight into prescription costs during a doctor’s visit or at hospital discharge based on patients’ health insurance. This information helps clinicians choose medications patients can afford and increases the likelihood they will adhere to their drug therapies.
“Complete and accurate medication history, along with real-time prescription benefit information, is critical to our ability to provide the best possible care to our patients,” said David Fleece, MD, chief medical information officer at Temple University Health System. “Leveraging AI and automated tasks, such as delivering patient data within our EHR workflows, relieve some of the burdens on our clinicians to support informed clinical decision-making at the point of care.”
Gaps in medication history can delay optimal treatment, put patients at risk of adverse drug events, and contribute to higher readmission rates. Having access to patient- and payer-specific prescription drug information during healthcare visits gives clinicians visibility into out-of-pocket costs and more affordable therapeutic alternatives so they can prescribe medications that are more likely to be picked up at the pharmacy.
“Our clinical-grade AI will help Temple Health providers reduce the time they spend manually entering data for medication reconciliation,” said G. Cameron Deemer, CEO of DrFirst. “At a time when many health systems are short-staffed, they need new ways to increase efficiency, reduce staff burnout, and prevent the adverse drug events that could lead to readmissions.”
Temple Health will use DrFirst’s advanced data analytics to monitor adherence to medication history best practices and suggest ways to further improve patient safety and staff efficiency.
About DrFirst
Since 2000, healthcare IT pioneer DrFirst has empowered providers and patients to achieve better health through intelligent medication management. We improve healthcare efficiency and effectiveness by enhancing e-prescribing workflows, improving medication history, optimizing clinical data usability, and helping patients start and stay on therapy. In the last few years, DrFirst has won over 25 awards for excellence and innovation, including winning Gold in the prestigious Edison Awards in 2023, recognizing our game-changing use of clinical-grade AI to streamline time-consuming healthcare workflows and prevent medication errors. Our solutions are used by more than 260,000 prescribers, 71,000 pharmacies, 300 EHRs and health information systems, and 2,000 hospitals in the U.S. and Canada. CHIME Statement of Support for CONNECT for Health Act
CHIME Statement of Support for CONNECT for Health Act
Most Comprehensive Telehealth Legislation in Congress
Ann Arbor, MI, June 15, 2023 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is pleased to offer our support for the bipartisan Creating Opportunities Now for Necessary and Effective Care Technologies (CONNECT) for Health Act. The CONNECT for Health Act was first introduced in 2016 and is considered the most comprehensive legislation on telehealth in Congress. Since 2016, several provisions of the bill were enacted into law or adopted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, including provisions to remove restrictions on telehealth services for mental health, stroke care, and home dialysis.
This significant piece of legislation highlights several lasting and holistic changes to our Medicare telehealth payment and coverage policies. Three provisions from the CONNECT for Health Act were signed into law in 2020. The updated version of the CONNECT for Health Act builds on that progress and includes new and revised provisions that will help more people access telehealth services. Specifically, the legislation would:
- Permanently remove all geographic restrictions on telehealth services and expand originating sites to include the home and other sites;
- Permanently allow health centers and rural health clinics to provide telehealth services;
- Allow more eligible healthcare professionals to utilize telehealth services;
- Remove unnecessary in-person visit requirement for telemental health services;
- Allow for the waiver of telehealth restrictions during public health emergencies; and
- Require more published data to learn more about how telehealth is being used, impacts of quality of care, and how it can be improved to support patients and healthcare providers.
The pandemic opened the door to not only expanding the ways patients access care but also improved much needed access to care by leveraging technology to bring patients face-to-face virtually via video and phone when necessary. CHIME members have made critical investments in telehealth and remote patient monitoring technologies and have witnessed patients across the nation reap the benefits from greater access facilitated by telehealth technologies.
“The CONNECT for Health Act will ensure patients continue to have ongoing access to their clinicians; removing many obstacles some patients face accessing needed services while putting protections in place to ensure federal resources are effectively used,” said CHIME President and CEO, Russ Branzell. “CHIME is pleased to see the legislation expand originating sites to include the home and other sites, allow more healthcare professionals to deliver care virtually, and repeal the unnecessary in-person visit requirement for telemental health visits. We applaud Senators Schatz (D-HI), Wicker (R-MS), Cardin (D-MD), Thune (R-SD), Warner (D-VA), and Hyde-Smith (R-MS) and Representatives Thompson (D-CA), Matsui (D-CA.), Schweikert (R-AZ), and Johnson (R-OH) for their leadership on this important piece of legislation and are encouraged this could pave the way for other payers to make similar changes.”
The CONNECT for Health Act currently has the support of more than 150 organizations, including CHIME and 60 Senators. A summary of the bill and the full list of endorsing organizations are available here.

Olah Receives Accolades from Customers in KLAS Report
KLAS Emerging Solutions Spotlight report highlights Olah clients’ high satisfaction with performance, functionality, and collaboration.
Columbus, OH (June 2023) — Olah, a technology company providing health systems and hospitals a better way to seamlessly archive and access data from legacy systems, announced today that it has been featured in a new KLAS Research Emerging Solutions Spotlight. The report examines client experience, satisfaction, and return on investment with Olah’s modern EAS™ (Enterprise Archiving Solution).
To create the report, KLAS Research surveyed Olah’s current clients, primarily hospitals. The report highlights that 100% of the company’s customers would purchase Olah again, citing the benefits of the platform, which include reduced archiving costs and the ability to consolidate disparate data sources. Customers also noted smooth implementations, strong partnerships and Olah’s flexible integration approach as top reasons for high satisfaction.
Speed was identified by customers as a positive part of their experience, with three-fourths of all customers seeing outcomes in under six months — a portion of those reporting immediate results.
Olah was founded by veterans of the healthcare industry who saw first-hand the complexity, disruption, and expense of removing older applications in order to modernize. The Olah EAS™ solution empowers organizations to finally solve their legacy application problem within a reasonable time frame and price range while preserving essential data integrity and accessibility.
“The biggest thing with OLAH Healthcare Technology is their data platform and the way that they go about data migration. They have an approach that isn’t restrictive in a lot of ways; their approach is very fresh, flexible, and adaptable. We have somewhat of a data warehouse available at our disposal, and all of the data can be easily queried and mined. The vendor has really done a good job with the design and architecture of the solution.” (VP/Other Executive, February 2023)
“The vendor has really done a good job with the design and architecture of the solution.” (VP/Other Executive, February 2023)
All customers surveyed by KLAS reported they have adopted 100% of the functionality of access to archived EMR, which speaks to the value of these functions, their ease of use, and Olah’s commitment to training and support. Other platform functionality adopted includes:
-Access to archived EMR (acute or ambulatory)
-Reports from Olah that look and feel like reports from the source system
-Access to archived revenue applications
-Access to archived administrative applications
-EMR SMART on FHIR integration: Enables access to Olah Enterprise Archiving Solution from EMR without logging in to system directlyCustomers told KLAS that Olah helped them achieve seamless implementations through strong partnerships. “OLAH Healthcare Technology has been incredibly easy to work with. Sales processes are normally not very enjoyable, but OLAH Healthcare Technology’s process was very easy, and the implementation team has been phenomenal. The vendor takes a different approach than a lot of vendors for archiving systems because we are archiving the actual data, not just an image. We can truly build a report that tells the system to pull data and put it in a certain format for a release of records purpose. That is the reason we went with OLAH Healthcare Technology rather than just plopping a PDF into something.” (Director, October 2022)
Olah’s customers also spoke highly of the company’s ongoing, expert customer service. The vendor’s close collaboration is a key strength, a manager told KLAS. “The vendor’s key strength is their collaboration work. We work very closely with them and them with us. We meet with the vendor frequently to do in-depth project reviews.” (Manager, November 2022)
The report details how hospitals are driving substantial value through the platform while also highlighting how Olah and customers can work together to achieve even greater success.“We are grateful for the feedback our customers contribute,” said Chad Hill, CEO of Olah. “Our goal is to enable hospitals and health systems to solve their legacy application problem simply and with less effort, and we are happy to see our customers are confirming that we are hitting the mark. We remain committed to listening to our customers and building on their feedback to drive even greater value for healthcare organizations.”

St. Luke’s Health System implements MEDITECH’s Smart Pump Infusion Integration
St. Luke’s Health System (Duluth, MN) recently implemented MEDITECH’s Smart Pump Infusion Integration with its Baxter Spectrum IQ infusion system, positively impacting staff efficiency and patient safety.
Duluth, MN May 25, 2023
Moving to Expanse enabled St. Luke’s Health System (Duluth, MN) to implement MEDITECH’s Smart Pump Infusion Integration with its Baxter Spectrum IQ infusion system in November 2022. The effort has received overwhelming organizational support, positively impacting staff efficiency and patient safety.
MEDITECH’s Smart Pump Infusion Integration enables organizations to verify the correct patients, medications, and smart pump devices for infusions via barcode scanning while supporting accurate and timely infusion documentation. This interoperability securely sends MEDITECH order data to Baxter’s smart pump devices and infusion status data from the smart pump devices back to Expanse.
“Above all, we are committed to putting patients first,” said Manager of Clinical Informatics Kristen Fish, RN, from St Luke’s, “The smart pump infusion integration helps us make strides in the accuracy and efficiency of our nurses, which improves patient safety and gives them more time to spend with the patient at their bedside.”
Improving accuracy and increasing efficiency
St. Luke’s consists of two hospitals and more than 40 clinics, including an infusion therapy clinic – where the integration’s impact has been greatest. Nurses frequently program the Baxter smart pumps, which has reinforced the process. By capturing the data in Expanse via the interface, nurses have improved accuracy and increased efficiency.
Watching the nurses train on the new workflow and use the integration expanded opportunities for St. Luke’s implementation team to help clinicians by refining processes.
“Implementing new technologies like smart pump infusion integration has the added benefit of spending time on workflows,” said Informatics Pharmacist Soyang Ha, PharmD, from St. Luke’s. “Although we already had high levels of safety and efficiency, the implementation enabled us to evaluate each step and improve our workflows even further.”
In addition to the Baxter Spectrum IQ Infusion System, MEDITECH plans to interface with other smart pump infusion systems, including those from other manufacturers, in the future.
