BD does not expect any material incremental revenue contribution from the BD Alaris™ Infusion System for the remainder of FY23; Expects to absorb initial re-launch investments within FY23 guidance range
FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. (July 21, 2023) — BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX), a leading global medical technology company, today announced that the updated BD Alaris™ Infusion System has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which enables both remediation and a return to full commercial operations for the most comprehensive infusion system available in the United States.
This clearance covers updated hardware features for Point-of-Care Unit (PCU), large volume pumps, syringe pumps, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps, respiratory monitoring and auto-identification modules. It also covers a new BD Alaris™ Infusion System software version with enhanced cybersecurity, along with interoperability features that enable smart, connected care with the most widely used electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
“The 510(k) clearance of the updated BD Alaris™ Infusion System has been the number one priority for our teams who have been steadfast in their efforts to achieve this milestone, consistent with our commitment to quality,” said Tom Polen, chairman, CEO and president of BD. “We are deeply committed to ensuring clinicians can continue to rely on our market leading system to meet today’s most critical infusion needs. The features and enhancements incorporated into the updated BD Alaris™ Infusion System and subject to this clearance reinforce our advancements in smart, connected care, which deliver greater benefit to clinicians and patients and help improve health care system efficiency through better care coordination and utilization of actionable information.”
Extending BD’s Decades-Long Legacy of Leadership in Infusion Innovation
Today’s clearance further enhances BD leadership in the infusion pump market. The updated BD Alaris™ Infusion System will help empower hospitals and health systems to optimize their workflows and deliver a higher standard of care, which has never been more important than in today’s health care environment of staffing shortages and resource constraints.
The BD Alaris™ Infusion System is the only system with a centralized user interface for up to four modules for all major types of infusions, including large volume pumps, syringe pumps, and PCA therapy with optional respiratory monitoring. Having one, comprehensive infusion system enables hospitals and health systems to easily scale their infusion needs across an entire integrated delivery network and provide interoperability with EMRs. With a common Point-of-Care Unit, one interface controls all modules, which is different from other pumps on the market that have non-modular architecture. The “one system” approach offers ease, simplicity and scalability.
The BD Alaris™ Infusion System also has the largest breadth of customers, the largest number of nurses trained on its use and the broadest experience and largest number of customers with EMR interoperability. Without this type of digital connectivity, clinicians are often required to navigate time-consuming processes, taking multiple steps to manually program infusions. The BD Alaris™ Infusion System can also feed data to the BD HealthSight™ platform for enterprise medication management, which is a unique combination of connective technologies, analytics and expert services that turn information into insights among caregivers and create seamless visibility across BD medication management solutions. With this platform, health systems can view infusion status in real-time as well as access an intuitive knowledge portal with actionable information related to clinician trends and drug and fluid libraries.
“We are so grateful for the fact that for more than two decades, frontline clinicians have relied on the BD Alaris™ Infusion System and Guardrails™ Safety Software to deliver medications, fluids and blood products to support the care of their patients,” said Mike Garrison, president of the BD Medical segment. “Today, a majority of hospitals in the United States use the BD Alaris™ Infusion System to safely deliver IV therapies to patients, and this comprehensive clearance provides a foundation to support a steady, reliable cadence of innovation in infusion technologies from BD. The clearance also marks another major step in our journey to support our customers with deep clinical, operational and technical expertise in Infusion Therapy, Vascular Access and Connected Medication Management.”
Supporting Our Customers
To address all open recalls and ensure all devices at customer sites are running the most recent version of the BD Alaris™ Infusion System Software, all of the current Alaris devices in the U.S. market will be remediated or replaced with the updated 510(k) cleared version. Given the large installed base of the BD Alaris™ Infusion System, BD will actively engage and start working in close partnership with its customers to undertake and complete the remediation or replacement of all devices in the field.
“Remediation of recalls will always be a top priority for BD, and our remediation plans go above and beyond all open recall requirements to ensure all devices are compliant with the 510(k) clearance, including the newest hardware, software and cybersecurity updates,” said Ami Simunovich, chief quality and regulatory officer at BD. “We have made substantial investments to simplify, improve and evolve our processes, systems and policies to ensure we design, manufacture and sustain our products in compliance with changing global regulatory and safety requirements. We remain committed to delivering next-generation quality and compliance to our customers.”
BD has been preparing for the updated clearance and return to full commercial operations by investing in the proper operational capacity and functional capabilities to provide customers with the best experience possible. This includes investments to increase manufacturing capacity, strengthen supply chains and increase supplier redundancy to help the company meet its remediation obligations and continue to reliably supply infusion products to customers. BD also retained its infusion implementation and service teams while products were on ship-hold to ensure support for its customers during the pandemic and enable seamless execution upon clearance.
BD has created a website dedicated to supporting customers who have questions about the updated 510(k) clearance or remediation at bd.com/explore-bd-alaris.
Updated Business Outlook
As previously disclosed, the company expects a return to full commercial operations and sales in its Infusion business to happen over time, with remediation or replacement of devices in the field taking first priority. While the company is well positioned to engage with customers and execute as quickly as possible, the lead time to shipment and installation is also dependent on customer readiness. Therefore, BD expects to begin shipping devices and recognizing revenue in FY24 and does not expect any material incremental revenue contribution from the BD Alaris™ Infusion System for the remainder of FY23. The company expects that the initial investments to return its Infusion business to full commercial operations will be absorbed within its previously announced FY23 guidance range.
The BD Alaris™ Infusion System’s clearance and return to full business operations increase the company’s confidence in achieving its previously disclosed BD2025 financial targets of 5.5%+ revenue growth and double-digit adjusted EPS growth, both of which exclude the impact of COVID-only testing and foreign currency.
BD will provide additional commentary during the company’s previously announced third quarter earnings call being held Thursday, Aug. 3 at 8 a.m. ET.

MEDITECH Surveillance helps Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare reduce maternal complications
Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare’s Birthing Center uses Surveillance to reinforce compliance with The Joint Commission’s performance measures targeting maternal complications.
Canton, MA (July 20, 2023) When The Joint Commission introduced 13 new performance measures to address obstetric hemorrhages and severe hypertension/preeclampsia back in 2020, the Birthing Center at Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare (Clinton, MO) saw an opportunity to test its new predictive analytics solution, MEDITECH Surveillance.
“That was the impetus for us to look into leveraging Surveillance for its monitoring capabilities,” said Birthing Center Director Wendy Bolinger, MBA, BSN, RNC-ONQS. “Since we went LIVE with the solution in 2021, we’ve seen a drastic improvement in complying with The Joint Commission’s elements of performance for managing these maternal complications.”
Bolinger noted that Surveillance and staff education have reinforced compliance and help clinicians provide timely treatment to patients, with monthly audits often reporting 100% compliance.
“Maternal morbidity and mortality rates in the United States are the highest in the industrialized world and continue to rise,” said Bolinger. “Because of Surveillance, we’re able to track and treat maternal complications. If a patient meets the criteria we specified in the profile, nurses and physicians are notified on their status boards and trackers. From there, clinicians have immediate access to processes and protocols for timely treatment.”
Identifying at-risk patients
The Birthing Center set a goal to audit compliance in January 2021. A multidisciplinary team of clinicians, IT analysts, and the quality outcomes coordinator developed policies, procedures, and algorithms based on evidence-based practice for maternal complications.
Focusing on maternal hemorrhage and severe hypertension/preeclampsia, the team built surveillance profiles that help identify patients who meet the criteria for these critical events and provide clinicians with actionable insights. In addition to educating clinicians, the team provides just-in-time training in the event of a fallout.
“Giving staff fingertip access to policies, procedures, and protocols keeps them at the bedside, where they can manage the complex care of these patients,” said GVMH Quality Outcomes Coordinator Nancy Engeman, BSN, RN.
Maternal hemorrhage profile
Risk assessments are performed at every prenatal visit and during each shift throughout labor and delivery; postpartum risk assessments chart fundal and abdominal checks during recovery. The profile is triggered by either estimated or quantitative blood loss for a vaginal or Cesarean delivery. Nurses quickly see the patient’s risk level and are prompted to place appropriate orders, such as blood units on standby, for those at high risk.
Hypertensive crisis profile
Birthing Center patients qualify for the hypertensive crisis profile when their systolic blood pressure measures 160 or their diastolic blood pressure measures 110 and persists longer than 15 minutes. Once the criteria are met, the hypertensive crisis algorithm is initiated, with medication dosing occurring within 30 to 60 minutes. Vital signs are taken every 10 minutes while patients are in crisis, and medication dosing continues until levels are within the target range of 140 – 150 for systolic blood pressure and 90 -100 for diastolic blood pressure.
The Birthing Center uses a surveillance watchlist to give clinicians a high-level overview of patients who meet the criteria for these profiles. Nurses and physicians simply click on the date and time of the alert to see why the patient qualified and view the hospital’s treatment protocol.
Meeting the needs of every care setting
Bolinger is confident the Birthing Center will be adding more surveillance profiles in the future.
“With a heavy focus on maternal safety right now, we’ll continue to watch for high-risk areas that need to be monitored and add them to our surveillance watchlist,” she said.
In addition to the surveillance profiles for maternal complications, the Birthing Center has built a profile to identify neonates at risk for hypoglycemia. Through staff education, surveillance monitoring, and monthly audits, the organization has seen a tremendous improvement in detecting susceptible newborns.
The Birthing Center isn’t the only department benefiting from the predictive analytics solution. Surveillance is supporting clinicians throughout GVMH, especially Infection Control.
“Having Surveillance was key for our facility to monitor our COVID process, and we have a pretty extensive list of infection prevention profiles that help us monitor patient care,” said Engeman. “Surveillance allows us to zero in on the cases that we need to review, instead of reviewing a ton of normal charts and then finally getting to something that we need to actually have eyes on.”

Highlights Critical Cybersecurity Issues in Healthcare while offering Actionable Guidance to Protect Patient Data
FRANKLIN, TN (July 18, 2023) – Fortified Health Security (Fortified), a Best in KLAS managed security services provider (MSSP) specializing in healthcare cybersecurity, announced the release today of its highly anticipated 2023 Mid-Year Horizon Report. The report delves into the significant cybersecurity challenges impacting the healthcare industry, and provides valuable insights to help healthcare organizations protect patient data and strengthen their security posture.
The first half of 2023 has presented hospitals and health systems with a multitude of challenges, including staffing and budget constraints, technological limitations, and cybersecurity risks. As healthcare facilities strive to ensure patient safety and data protection, the federal government has taken notice and is actively working on legislative initiatives to address these pressing issues.
“Data breaches are a growing concern in the healthcare industry, affecting millions of individuals,” said Dan L. Dodson, CEO of Fortified Health Security. “Our Mid-Year Horizon Report unpacks some of what we and others in our industry have observed since the beginning of the year, and offers recommendations for how we can work together to create a more secure healthcare ecosystem.”
The report covers a range of critical topics in healthcare cybersecurity, including:
- Mid-year data breach statistics and trends
- Legislative progress and priorities
- Data theft and covert tactics
- The promise and pitfalls of AI and ChatGPT

The 2023 Mid-Year Horizon Report reveals notable facts, such as the alarming increase in reported data breaches. Since the beginning of 2023, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has received reports of nearly 250 breaches, affecting more than 24 million individuals, representing a 56% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
The report also features a contribution from Fortified’s Senior Virtual Information Security Officer, Kate Pierce, who testified before the U.S. Senate’s Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. Her insights shed light on the cybersecurity risks faced by healthcare organizations, particularly smaller and rural ones, and provide proactive recommendations that may help mitigate these threats.

CloudMedx builds LLMs To Solve the Five Biggest Challenges for AI in Healthcare
The CloudMedx platform has been adopted by major healthcare organizations, and is quickly adding new functionality
SUNNYVALE, Calif., (June 27, 2023) — While numerous industries are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence, one of the largest — the massive healthcare sector — has been struggling. AI for healthcare presents unprecedented opportunities, with a study indicating it can save lives and reduce healthcare cost by up to $360 billion a year in the United States alone.
But a series of challenges unique to healthcare have stood in the way — until now. CloudMedx, a team of top engineers, data scientists, doctors, and innovators, is developing the tools and technology to overcome the five biggest challenges for Healthcare AI:
The need for accuracy, with sub-domain fine tuning
Avoiding or reducing hallucination
Data privacy and security
Integration into existing workflows
The ability to scale rapidly
“We’re thrilled to be able to deliver groundbreaking technology,” says Tashfeen Suleman, CEO of CloudMedx. “This is the ideal tool for enterprises that want to use the power of Large Language Models and Generative AI. The potential applications are endless — from revolutionizing financial operations to predicting outcomes and much more.”The solution, part of the ONE Platform, is already up and running inside healthcare institutions, improving patient’s health, transforming operations and providing a tremendous competitive advantage.
The biggest generative AI challenges for healthcare
While generative AI has suddenly been getting a great deal of attention, tools like ChatGPT, Bard and other Large Language Models (LLMs) don’t work for the highly sensitive and specific field of healthcare.
For starters, they lack the specific, detailed, scientific knowledge and domain data that all stakeholders rely on. Imagine the repercussions of a tool believing junk science as legitimate information or data, for example. These technologies also tend to “hallucinate,” a term for confidently providing an answer that could be entirely wrong.
LLMs can also run privacy risks, as evidenced by what some businesses are currently going through. As an IT Brew headline put it, “Generative AI data leaks are a serious problem, experts say.”
And healthcare organizations need AI tools that will easily and quickly fit into their current workflows. Without this, implementing a new tool can require months of complex training for personnel and cause confusion, creating an additional burden.
The CloudMedx solution
CloudMedx is fine-tuning a healthcare domain specific LLM model, based on healthcare-specific data. The team puts it through rigorous testing for accuracy, and keeps it updated with new information. It is designed to keep all patient data proprietary and protected, so healthcare organizations don’t risk exposure. Once deployed in customer environments, it works entirely within a healthcare organization reducing data leaks and privacy issues. CloudMedx does not see any of the patient data.CloudMedx has designed these tools with scale in mind and ease of use for enterprise healthcare organizations. The tools are designed to integrate with the most popular technology systems for healthcare organizations, including Epic and Medicare’s Blue Button, and to deploy on the cloud systems that most healthcare organizations use: Google, Microsoft and Amazon. The tools are also designed to scale easily as healthcare needs increase and healthcare organizations grow.
Crucially, the tools keep humans in charge of healthcare decisions. By cutting back on waste, delays and other problems that bog down the healthcare system, CloudMedx is freeing healthcare providers to spend less time on administrative work and more time doing what they want to do most: deliver care. The results include improved outcomes for patients; more time for healthcare providers to focus on treating patients; lowered costs for all stakeholders; on-time payments, and more.
“This is the ideal technology for enterprises that want to use the power of LLMs and AI in a way that’s accurate, secure, specific, presents no disrupting in workflow, and won’t crash,” says Sahar Arshad, co-founder and chief operating officer of CloudMedx. “It’s a real game changer.”
About CloudMedx: CloudMedx Inc. is transforming healthcare delivery using Artificial Intelligence, giving patients, providers and payers actionable insights on their data so they can improve care and outcomes.
