Virtual Sitting a Resource Gain for Nurses, Study Finds
Study in Western Journal of Nursing Research reveals virtual sitting is a valued resource with positive effects on nurse burnout
(BELMONT, Mich., November 16, 2023) — Virtual care adoption is increasing quickly in hospital settings, but do bedside clinicians view it as a positive change? Recent studies show that virtual sitting is a technological advancement that is viewed as a resource gain, not a resource drain. AvaSure, the market leader in acute virtual sitting and virtual nursing solutions, today announced the results of a new study published in the Western Journal of Nursing Research in August 2023. The study, An Experience Sampling Analysis of the Impact of Video Monitoring Technology and In-Person Sitters on Nurse Burnout: The Moderating Effect of Nurse Commitment and Mediating Effect of Emotional Labor (Kluemper, et al), supported by Providence and AvaSure, revealed that the use of virtual sitting technology, as opposed to one-to-one sitters, can be tied to reduction in nurse burnout especially for nurses who already feel less committed. Additionally, the study showed in-person sitting was viewed as a resource drain with negative effects on these nurses’ emotional labor and emotional exhaustion.
“Having insightful research into virtual sitting helps us alleviate burnout among our nursing staff and optimize the usage of all our resources to get the right care to the right patient at the right time,” said study co-author Emily Anderson, MSN, RN, PCCN-K, nurse manager at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage, AK. “This study supports our experience that virtual sitting improves the well-being of our nurses and helps maintain patient safety.”
While it is well-established in clinical literature that virtual sitting technology, compared with the use of in-person sitters, improves safety and reduces costs for hospitals, this study sheds light on the technology’s impact on nurses’ stress and well-being. The new study builds on previous research published in the Journal of Nursing Measurement in 2020, which surveyed 412 nurses on their attitudes toward virtual sitting. It demonstrated bedside nurses view virtual sitting as an increased resource to maintain patient safety and did not view one-to-one sitters as a safer alternative.
“This research represents a valuable contribution to the knowledge base on virtual sitting by being the first to demonstrate a reduction in nurse burnout associated with the use of virtual sitting technology,” said Lisbeth Votruba, MSN, RN, chief clinical officer of AvaSure. “As more and more peer-reviewed research on virtual sitting is published, it becomes clearer that nurses view the unproven practice of using one-to-one sitters as a resource drain and virtual sitters are a benefit. Nurses know that pulling valuable nursing assistants to sit with one patient around the clock is wasteful and leaves everyone else shorthanded.”
“While we already know from the existing literature that virtual sitting improves patient safety and saves hospitals critical financial resources, it is important to better understand how virtual sitting impacts nurse well-being,” said Don Kluemper, Ph.D., the study’s lead author and Professor of Management at Texas Tech University. “This new study supports the notion that virtual sitting reduces while one-to-one sitters worsen nurse burnout.”
The study used an experience sampling method and was conducted by surveying nurses twice a day for three weeks, resulting in 524 survey administrations provided by 74 nurses. The surveys included measures of daily video monitoring technology and in-person sitter use, emotional labor, emotional exhaustion, and nurse career commitment. Nurses participated from Providence Medical Center in Anchorage, AK and Providence St. Peter in Olympia, WA.
AvaSure was not involved in the study design, collection, analysis, interpretation of data, writing of the manuscript nor the decision to submit the manuscript for publication.

Digital Access Dominates: 80% of Consumers Prioritize Scheduling Care Online, Reveals Kyruus’ 2023 Care Access Benchmark Report
New data provides insights into patient access expectations for providers and health plans
BOSTON, MA (October 10, 2023) – Kyruus, the leader in healthcare provider data management, price transparency, and patient access and engagement, announced the release of its “Care Access Benchmark Report” for providers and health plans. In July of 2023, the company partnered with Wakefield Research to better understand how consumer preferences for finding, selecting, and accessing care have evolved, and how preferences might differ by generation. A total of 1,000 healthcare consumers were surveyed. Key findings include:
- Digital access is a top priority: Almost 80 percent of all consumers would schedule care from a health plan website if given the option, and 75 percent of millennials scheduled their last appointment online. When selecting a new provider, 61 percent of consumers say the ability to schedule appointments online is extremely or very important. A mere 36 percent of those surveyed said they were confident they were matched with a provider who could meet their clinical needs when scheduling an appointment over the phone.
- Lack of health plan price transparency creates care barriers: 96 percent of those surveyed said they consider cost when making healthcare decisions, and 44 percent agreed that a lack of price transparency from their health plan prevents them from seeking healthcare. More than a quarter (26 percent) said their health plan doesn’t offer transparency tools, while 64 percent of consumers agree they need more help navigating these tools.
- Data inaccuracies erode trust: More than half (58 percent) of those surveyed confirmed they relied on a health plan website or app when searching for care online, and 29 percent ranked their health plan’s website as the most trusted source for information. A whopping 77 percent said inaccurate provider information on their health plan’s website impacts their level of trust, yet 40 percent noted they had found inaccurate provider information on their site.
Gail Airasian, Chief Strategy Officer at Kyruus, explained why recognizing the gaps between what consumers want and what health plans and providers deliver is crucial to improving care access. “Accurate data, price transparency, and easy-to-use tools are paramount to an optimized experience,” she confirmed.
Airasian was also careful to note a patient’s digital expectations vary by age. “Generational differences among consumers showcase the continued need for a multi-channel focus on care access—meaning a wide variety of options are still vital to truly serve patients,” she added.
Kyruus will use the data learned from this report to guide its path forward in better addressing the needs of its customers and its customers’ patients and continue to provide solutions that address care access and price transparency. Kyruus will be attending HLTH 2023 in Las Vegas and will be available to further discuss the 2023 Care Access Benchmark Report.

The Digital Health Most Wired survey, reflecting the digital profiles of nearly 40% of US hospitals, offers a comprehensive overview of the digital health landscape. This year’s findings, encapsulated in the report, reveal a predominant theme: “Accelerating Data Usage.” The report delves into this theme with evidence drawn from the DHMW survey, complemented by supplementary insights from KLAS Research, providing a nuanced understanding of the market context.
The survey results indicate a critical juncture for healthcare organizations (HCOs) as they navigate the delicate balance between financial stability and allocating resources for IT support. A key concern is optimizing spending, staff utilization, and adopting a data-driven approach for strategic decision-making.
Considering market conditions, the healthcare industry’s ongoing commitment to harnessing technology for enhanced care delivery and patient outcomes is evident. This commitment is facilitated by three key trends outlined in the report: Enhanced Data Outputs, Expanded Data Inputs, and Elevated Data Direction.
- Enhanced Data Outputs: This trend signifies the evolution in metabolizing data to optimize decision-making. It involves providing relevant data and insights at the right time and speed to the right people, thereby enhancing the overall efficacy of healthcare decision processes.

This scholarship represents a significant step in my journey to making a lasting impact on healthcare technology and patient care. It’s a reminder that no matter where you start, with dedication and support, you can achieve remarkable heights in your career.”
Gasser is a seasoned HIT professional with 19 years of information systems experience. He, however, began his healthcare career as a registered nurse before discovering a passion for informatics and clinical technology. Following this direction, Gasser quickly advanced within Wooster Community Hospital’s IT department. Early in his tenure, Gasser led the organization in implementing CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry), electronic physician documentation, and the MEDITECH emergency department application. Upon promotion to director of information systems, Gasser effectively led the conversion from MEDITECH Magic to MEDITECH 6.0, with which Wooster Community Hospital achieved Meaningful Use Stage 1 and Stage 2 certifications.
Now, serving as vice president and CIO, Gasser has spearheaded initiatives for increasing EHR satisfaction, reducing physician burnout, and optimizing the use of technology to facilitate meaningful patient interactions. At home, Gasser and his wife Lisa are raising six children, having recently officially adopted their 6-year-old daughter into their family. Gasser plans to utilize the Stoltenberg Future Fund Scholarship toward his MBA education at the University of Akron this fall.

Physician Executive Leader Shares Clinician-Friendly Tech Adoption Playbook at CHIME23 Fall Forum
FDB Targeted Medication Warnings ease improvement of medication alert relevance in the EHR workflow
PHOENIX, AZ (November 8, 2023) – A physician executive leader from a long-time customer of FDB (First Databank, Inc.), the leading provider of drug knowledge that helps healthcare professionals make precise decisions, will share real-world lessons on how to earn clinician buy-in and long-term engagement in health IT projects large and small, even during a time of historic staffing challenges.
Donald Levick, MD, MBA, CPE, FHIMSS, a practicing pediatrician and the former chief medical information officer at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), will share his presentation, “Pulling Along Tech Change Without Pushing Clinicians Over the Edge” at the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) Fall Forum, November 9-12 in Phoenix.
“Many organizations today are wary of introducing changes to providers’ workflows,” said Dr. Levick, who has built his clinician-friendly tech-adoption playbook since 2000. “If new systems and changes are selected and executed correctly and collaboratively, launching a clinician-led IT workflow change in this environment can actually help reduce provider burnout by eliminating tech-related drudgery and increasing meaningful time with patients.”Managing Changes Large and Small
Dr. Levick led numerous health IT projects over two decades that required clinician buy-in and adoption – including an Epic EHR implementation. The Epic launch and associated change management effort were enormous. Yet smaller, incremental tech improvements to an existing EHR, such as implementing FDB Targeted Medication Warnings™ to optimize select medication safety alerts, require change management steps, too. Dr. Levick’s presentation includes hard-earned, real-world advice and best practices for managing IT adoption with clinicians, including how to generate interest – or even excitement – around the smaller ones. For example, Dr. Levick introduced an initiative to help reduce the number of drug-drug interaction notifications that clinicians received warning them of potential hyperkalemia (high blood potassium levels) in patients. Clinicians at LVHN were frequently overriding these alerts because they were being fired at inappropriate times and were not relevant to the patient in the current clinical context.
Dr. Levick formed a multidisciplinary team and collaboratively worked with FDB to implement FDB Targeted Medication Warnings to make these alerts more patient-specific. FDB’s “patient-first” approach to optimizing medication decision support integrates additional inputs, including lab results, genomic markers, and clinical scoring/surveillance systems, to achieve a highly personalized notification at the point of care. The inclusive, collective effort initiated by Dr. Levick resulted in a 70% reduction in the volume of irrelevant, non-actionable hyperkalemia alerts. Likewise, providers cut their overrides of hyperkalemia alerts in half. The change improved the clinician experience while protecting patients’ safety and health.
Another major factor in earning clinician buy-in for this change and others was to first find a clinician champion (or “influencer” in today’s parlance) to build engagement among other providers. Dr. Levick also conducted a deep data analysis of clinician behaviors to determine which alerts were being ignored the most. Another factor was that this EHR optimization required no formal training sessions for most clinicians and was highly intuitive. Acceptance of alerts jumped from less than 20% to more than 60%, indicating much higher relevancy to providers at that right point in their workflow – and likely less tech-related frustration.
“Preventing ‘alert fatigue’ among clinicians is important, but preventing ‘change fatigue’ may, in turn, be a more pressing issue today,” said Dr. Levick. “By introducing and implementing health IT changes the right way, organizations can take advantage of innovative new tools that help protect patient safety and improve outcomes, while at the same time, improve their clinicians’ experiences.”
Dr. Levick’s informal and interactive presentation is part of “The Human Side of Digital Health” education track and will be delivered on Saturday, November 11, at 11:15 a.m. in the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa conference room.About FDB

Healthcare Triangle Ransomware Protection and Prevention Initiative Draws Initial Support from Multiple Health System Clients
Company offers critical resources for seven key tenets of ransomware cybersecurity: education, assessment, preparedness, protection, detection, response, and recovery
PLEASANTON, Calif. (July 26, 2023) – Healthcare Triangle, Inc. (Nasdaq: HCTI) (“HCTI” or the “Company”), a leader in digital transformation solutions including managed services, cloud enablement, cybersecurity, data analytics, and AI data processing for the healthcare and life sciences industries, today announced that its new ransomware prevention and protection initiative launched earlier this month is drawing initial interest and support from numerous health system clients seeking critical tools and guidance for preventing and responding to ransomware incidents. The Company is servicing multiple contract agreements for cloud backup and disaster recovery, enabling hospitals and health systems to move disaster recovery to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud to secure resources and scale on demand. This helps to mitigate risks by increasing resilience and meeting compliance requirements. Elastic disaster recovery minimizes downtime with minimal RPO (recovery point objective) and RTO (recovery time objective) for immediate recovery to ransomware events.
“The accelerating volume of national news about ransomware incidents is driving widespread demand for cybersecurity services. Our clients are seeking guidance and protection from solutions that are specific to the concerns and needs of healthcare systems and their patients,” said Lena Kannappan, head of business, strategy and partnerships for Healthcare Triangle. In July alone, one of the country’s largest providers confirmed a data breach impacting 11 hospitals and 12 million patients, and now faces at least four class action lawsuits. A prominent community hospital had to close its doors permanently due to a 2021 ransomware attack that caused devastating financial loss. IBM reported that ‘the average costs of a studied breach in healthcare reached nearly $11 million in 2023 – a 53% price increase since 2020.’ Rural hospitals are particularly vulnerable to risk at these high costs.
“Healthcare Triangle’s mission is to fill a leadership role as the authority on specialized cybersecurity and identity management solutions for organizations ranging from small community healthcare providers to large healthcare systems serving millions of patients. We are in discussions with multiple cybersecurity product vendors and public cloud providers to bring best-of-breed solutions to the hospital community,” Kannappan continued. “In just two weeks, our initiative has drawn a significant amount of interest from our existing health system clients and partners. This strong initial response bodes well for the continuing adoption of our critical resources for preparedness, prevention, detection, response, and recovery from ransomware attacks.”
Key areas of client interest to date include:
- Education and training
- Threat assessment
- Evaluation and recommendations for security processes and tools
- Incident management plan preparation
- Backup and disaster recovery
- Data archival on the cloud
- Threat vectors and remediation
- Prevention and protection including identity management
- Detection, response, and recovery
Commenting on Healthcare Triangle’s ransomware initiative, longstanding client CalvertHealth Medical Center stated, “Hospitals need to take solid steps toward ransomware resilience. With HCTI’s help we have implemented their Amazon Web Services-based disaster recovery solution in order to protect our patients’ data.”
