At Kroll, he leads engagements for clients across a wide range of industries involving investigative digital forensics, intrusion response (unauthorized access) and malware analysis. He also serves as team lead for two North America incident response teams, where he conducts and oversees digital evidence collection, triage and preservation.
Ackerman joined Kroll from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he was a Supervisory Special Agent and Senior Digital Sciences Forensics Examiner in the Digital Evidence Field Operations Unit. In this role, he oversaw and coordinated all FBI Digital Forensics-related field operations across the United States. Ackerman has also provided expert witness testimony in federal and state courts.
While at the FBI, Ackerman developed a number of forensic tools that are still widely used and was a primary contributor to a number of training curriculums. He began his career with the FBI in 2008, where he co-founded the FBI’s first North Carolina Cyber Security and Intrusion Working Group (eShield).
Ackerman is also the founder and manager of “Digital Forensics/Incident Response (DFIR) – The Definitive Compendium Project,” known as AboutDFIR.com. Ackerman launched the resource in 2014 with a single category of information tracking fewer than 30 DFIR-related certifications; today, the site presents an extensive amount of curated DFIR-related information across nearly 30 categories.
